Since 2003 courthouse dogs have provided comfort to children who
have been sexually abused while they undergo forensic interviews
and testify in court. The dogs also assist drug court participants
in their recovery, visit juveniles in detention facilities, greet
jurors and in general lift the spirits of courthouse staff.

Betty Lopez founded Quilts of Many Colors after learning from a
police officer about how children were affected when they were
removed from their homes by the Department of Family and Children's
Services. She wanted to find a way to comfort the children. So she
recruited members of her church to create quilts to be distributed
to the children. The women make 10-12 quilts per month and have
given away over 500 in the last three years. See pictures of the

Lavinia Brooks' life changed when her son was sentenced to prison.
Not only did she have to deal with her emotions, but she also had
to endure constant questions about her son's whereabouts from his
young daughter. Lavinia wanted to explain the situation to her
granddaughter in a loving and truthful way. So, she used her
artistic talents to create a special book to answer her
granddaughter's questions and help heal other children with
