The Muppets (Three-Disc Blu-ray/DVD/Digital Copy + Soundtrack Download Card)


Movies attempting to retrieve cherished nuggets of pop culture often stumble, either by appealing solely to the die-hard minutia enthusiasts or clunking up the batter with unnecessary additions to the base material. (Enough with the human love triangles, get to the giant robots fighting.) Thankfully, this revival of Jim Henson’s beloved characters gets the formula delightfully right, providing a googly-eyed nostalgia trip for adults while also retaining the original’s sense of bright (and mildly subversive) wonder. All that’s missing is a cameo from Shields and Yarnell, really. Kicking off with a boffo musical number, the story follows Walter (voice of Peter Linz), a small-town boy with a uniquely personal affection for the long-retired Muppets. (OK, he’s made of felt.) Teaming up with his brother (Jason Segel, who also co-scripted) and the local schoolteacher (Amy Adams), they attempt to get Kermit, Fozzie, and the gang back together in order to save their studio from an evil oil baron (Chris Cooper, going all in). Director James Bobin (Flight of the Conchords) does a marvelous job of updating and honoring his material, weaving sly references to days gone by (the contents of Kermit’s rolodex are a particular delight) into the mix of songs, celebrity cameos, and barn-broad puns that gave the original show its bubbly kick. (Fans of Animal and the Chickens will not go home disappointed.) Even the moments that don’t quite work land with a cornball brio that feels wholly of a piece with Henson’s universe. The result is a true family movie that still brings on the blissful, uncomplicated grins days after viewing. No matter what Statler and/or Waldorf might say, the show goes on. –Andrew Wright

George Bailey has so many problems he is thinking about ending it all – and it’s Christmas! As the angels discuss George, we see his life in flashback. It’s a Wonderful Life
Now perhaps the most beloved American film, It’s a Wonderful
Life was largely forgotten for years, due to a copyright
quirk. Only in the late 1970s did it find its audience through
repeated TV showings. Frank Capra’s masterwork deserves its
status as a feel-good communal event, but it is also one of the
most fascinating films in the American cinema, a multilayered
work of Dickensian density. George Bailey (played superbly by
James Stewart) grows up in the small town of Bedford Falls,
dreaming dreams of adventure and travel, but circumstances
conspire to keep him enslaved to his home turf. Frustrated by his
life, and haunted by an impending scandal, George prepares to
commit suicide on Christmas Eve. A heavenly messenger (Henry
Travers) arrives to show him a vision: what the world would have
been like if George had never been born. The sequence is a vivid
depiction of the American Dream gone bad, and probably the
wildest thing Capra ever shot (the director’s optimistic vision
may have darkened during his experiences making military films in
World War II). Capra’s triumph is to acknowledge the difficulties
and disappointments of life, while affirming–in the teary-eyed
final reel–his cherished values of friendship and individual
achievement. It’s a Wonderful Life was not a big hit on
its initial release, and it won no Oscars (Capra and Stewart were
nominated); but it continues to weave a special magic.

Based on the 1938 book of the same name by Richard and Florence Atwater, Mr. Popper’s Penguins is a comedy about how the surprise appearance of a penguin at a New York businessman’s door turns his life completely upside down, while simultaneously teaching him an important lesson about the value of family. Far from the small-town painter featured in the book, the film’s Mr. Popper is a real estate developer who lives in an exclusive apartment on Park Avenue, has his sights set on becoming a partner in his firm, and is an every-other-weekend father to his two children. A ruthless developer with no time for anything but business, Mr. Popper resolves to deal with his father’s parting gift of a penguin by getting rid of the annoying bird as quickly as possible. That process proves much more difficult than expected, even with the help of his ultra-efficient assistant Pippi, who speaks primarily in p‘s, and Mr. Popper soon winds up with six penguins. Even more unexpected is how markedly those penguins begin to affect the relationship between Mr. Popper and his children and how that change affects the rest of Mr. Popper’s life. Jim Carrey’s performance as Mr. Popper is very good–he capitalizes on the many comic opportunities afforded by the idea of keeping penguins in a New York apartment while showing an uncharacteristic restraint that’s quite refreshing. Ophelia Lovibond is quite comical as Pippi and Angela Lansbury also makes a strong appearance as one of Mr. Popper’s potential business clients. As Pippi would say, the premise of the power of the penguin to promote personal prosperity and perpetuate personal peace positively prevails in Mr. Popper’s Penguins. Writer-director Thomas Bezucha’s slapstick premise begins when Everett (Dermot Mulroney) brings his fiancé Meredith (Sarah Jessica Parker) home to meet his family for Christmas. It’s an instant disaster when parents Sybil (Diane Keaton) and Kelly (Craig T. Nelson) agree with their gay, deaf son Thad (Ty Giordano, who is actually hearing impaired), pot-smoking son Ben (Luke Wilson) and daughters Amy (Rachel McAdams) and Susannah (Elizabeth Reaser) that Meredith is way too uptight to be welcomed into their family. Meredith recruits her sister Julie (Claire Danes) to help her thaw the Stone family cold front, and after building a solid emotional foundation for his holiday comedy, Bezucha starts to stack the deck with plot developments that, while heartwarming, border on the absurd. You either go with the movie’s flow or you don’t, and with this appealing cast (featuring some really nice work by Keaton, Nelson, Parker and Danes) it’s easy to forgive Bezucha’s unlikely blend of yuletide cheer, petty animosities, and romantic tables turned in the blink of an eye. Toss in a case of terminal illness and you’ve got a sad-happy tearjerker that works in spite of itself. If you don’t recognize at least part of your own holiday clan in The Family Stone, you probably haven’t been paying attention. –Jeff Shannon

Oakland A’s general manager Billy Beane (Brad Pitt) challenges the system and defies conventional wisdom when his is forced to rebuild his small-market team on a limited budget. Despite opposition from the old guard, the media, fans and their own field manager (Philip Seymour Hoffman), Beane – with the help of a young, number-crunching, Yale-educated economist (Jonah Hill) – develops a roster of misfits…and along the way, forever changes the way the game is played.
It’s amazing that Moneyball makes baseball statistics seem fascinating–but that’s because it’s not really a movie about numbers, and it’s not really a movie about baseball, either. It’s about what drives people to take risks–in this instance, Billy Beane (played by Brad Pitt), general manager of the Oakland A’s, who’s just had his best players poached by teams that can afford to pay a lot more. Fed up with how money twists the game, he listens to Peter Brand (Jonah Hill), who persuades him that certain players are being undervalued for trivial reasons–that statistics reveal hidden strengths that could, when used in the right combinations, produce a winning season. Beane takes Brand’s advice, then has to fight everyone else around him to follow it through. Moneyball skillfully takes the audience into Beane’s psyche. Pitt is in excellent form; it’s an understated but magnetic performance, the kind that rarely wins awards but should. Pitt has the physical presence of a former athlete and vividly expresses the mind of a man who’s never achieved success but isn’t ready to give up. Director Bennett Miller (Capote) shapes the supporting cast (Hill, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Robin Wright, and others less recognizable but just as solid) as carefully as Beane shapes his team. Miller has a few flashy (and highly effective) moments of sound manipulation and editing, but Moneyball is carried by its superb performances. –Bret Fetzer

An addictive blend of suds and social commentary, ITV’s Downton Abbey brings a microcosm of Edwardian society together under one roof. Lord Robert Crawley (Hugh Bonneville) and his family live a life of leisure, while a fleet of servants, including butler Carson (Jim Carter), attend to their every need, but two events conspire to shake things up: the sinking of the Titanic, which claims Crawley’s heirs, and the return of his valet, Bates (Brendan Coyle). Since Crawley and Lady Cora (Elizabeth McGovern) have three daughters, his distant solicitor cousin, Matthew (Dan Stevens), becomes heir to the estate. With that, the scheming begins, since Thomas the footman (Rob James-Collier) views Bates as an interloper and Crawley’s mother, Violet (Maggie Smith), feels the same way about Matthew’s mother, Isobel (Penelope Wilton).
In the tradition of the BBC’s Upstairs Downstairs and Robert Altman’s Gosford Park, for which writer-creator Julian Fellowes received an Academy Award, the royals, servants, and middle-class relations struggle to get along. Sniffs uptight maid Miss O’Brien (Siobhan Finneran), “Gentlemen don’t work,” but that doesn’t stop Mary (Michelle Dockery) and Edith Crawley (Laura Carmichael) from competing for Matthew’s affections. Though it takes awhile to warm up to the tightest-wound characters, most everyone reveals their more vulnerable side before the first season comes to an end, and a new small-screen classic is born.
The entire sprawling cast is quite wonderful, particularly Bonneville, Carter, and James-Collier, who provide a fascinating study in contrasts (the latter is downright dastardly). Unlike the version that aired on PBS’s Masterpiece Classic, this set offers seven parts rather than four. Extras include a featurette, in which cast and crew discuss the production, and an introduction to Hampshire’s Highclere Castle, which doubles for Downton Abbey. The first season was a phenomenon in the United Kingdom, and Fellowes has promised a second season set during World War I. –Kathleen C. Fennessy
Breaking Bad – The Complete First Season


Popular water-cooler drama about an unremarkable and uncharismatic chemistry teacher, Walter, who discovers new passion in his life after he learns he has terminal cancer. Once a successful chemist, Walter now teaches apathetic high school students and works part-time at a car wash to help support his family – wife Skyler, who earns a modest income buying and selling items on eBay, and son Walter, Jr., a strong-willed 17-year-old suffering from cerebral palsy. Realizing he has nothing but his family left to live for, Walter’s new sense of purpose reinvigorates him into a man of action as he turns to an exciting life of crime to provide for the ones he loves.
No one would confuse the desperate dad Bryan Cranston plays in this character-driven drama with the fun-loving Hal from Malcolm in the Middle. In AMC’s Breaking Bad, Walter White lives in the suburbs with his wife–and wears tighty-whiteys–but the similarities end there. During the pilot, the cash-strapped chemistry teacher finds out he has inoperable lung cancer. He and Skyler (Deadwood‘s Anna Gunn) have one son, Walter Jr. (R.J. Mitte), and a daughter on the way. With two years to get his affairs in order, Walter comes up with a wild plan: he and former student Jesse (Aaron Paul), a drug dealer, will open a meth lab.
In the hands of creator Vince Gilligan (The X-Files), Bad‘s first season plays like the improbable offspring of Weeds and The Shield. With nothing left to lose, the Albuquerque 50-year-old uses his death sentence as a catalyst to break every rule he’s ever followed while keeping his family–including Skyler’s radiologist sister, Marie (Betsy Brandt), and her DEA agent husband, Hank (Dean Norris)–out of the loop. Throughout these seven episodes, Walt takes on a hostage, a dead body, and a partner who likes to sample his own product. Based on the description alone, the program shouldn’t work as well as it does, except Gilligan and company keep the situations psychologically believable and Emmy winner Cranston makes Walt surprisingly sympathetic as he swings between compassion and self-interest. As he tells his students, “Chemistry is the study of change,” a statement that applies equally well to the show, since Walt ends up in a very different place than the one he began. This three-disc set comes complete with cast and crew commentary, an installment of AMC’s Shootout, two featurettes, deleted scenes, and screen tests. –Kathleen C. Fennessy
