Summary: Indestructible Dog Toys

Getting more chew outta your dog's toys...

Indestructible Dog Chew Toys

Indestructible Dog Chew Toys offer so many benefits for both pet and owner alike, from pet safety to toy longevity.  The most 'puppular' material for chew toys is rubber, and its available in many types for light to heavy dog chewers.  Our 4 year old Bull Terrier- Mulligan, puts each of these chew toys through the test and certifies those worthy of the title– Indestructible Dog Toy.  Supporting Mulligan is our 9 year old English Bulldog- Kirsi, albeit she has plenty of chewing experience she doesn't have much to say these days and will merely be an assistant in these reviews.

Kong Chew Toys

One of the the most popular and durable dog chew toys are the Kong dog toys.  Kong toys are a great investment, they withstand years of dog chewing and they offer their toys in many different sizes as well as 4 different rubber types; red for  your average chewer, pink or blue for young dogs, purple for old dogs, and black for aggressive chewers.  Mulligan has logged three years on a Classic (red) Kong and it still has many more chomps left in it.  We contribute his enjoyment of the Kong to the crazy bounce when it's thrown as this tends to trigger his sporadic behavior and he gets to run amuck like the crazy dog he is, or at least wants to be…

PawTrack TireBiter Chew Toy

The next tough chew toy on the list is The Original TireBiter from Mammoth Pet Products.  We initially discovered a need for this toy about 7 years ago when Kirsi found her first bicycle tire and didn't let go.  To this day we are still not certain what the attraction is to tires, but if it has them, she likes to bite them…Of course we had to find her a safer more dog friendly tire, naturally we opted for the only thing we could find at the time– The Tirebiter.  Constructed of a soft rubber compound and reinforced with nylon fibers the PawTrack TireBiter flosses your pet's teeth while they chew.  Marked as Kirsi's favorite chew toy and one of Mulligan's top picks, in 7 years we're on number two with two aggressive chewing dogs, this one's a keeper.

GoughNuts Chew Toy

Our favorite chew toy goes by the name GoughNuts, certified by Mulligan himself this chew toy offers the best in pet safety.  Every dog toy has its limits and the GoughNuts toys will let you know when your friend has gone too far.  GoughNuts has implemented a safety feature in their toys.  The outer material is colored green or black (with the black being more dense for aggressive chewers) and the inner core is colored red.  The idea is simple if the green or black is showing let your dog go nuts and chew their heart out, if the red inner core starts to show it's time to take it away.  The beauty behind this toy is the guarantee– if your dog can chew through the green or black and expose the red they will send you a new one at no cost.  GoughNuts has invested so much effort into the development of this toy that they even keep a running tally of those that were able to see red.  While we have yet to see red on this one with a few months under our belt, we are certain that this chew toy is note worthy of the title– Indestructible Dog Toy.

Indestructible Dog Bones

Indestructible Dog Bones– This is the one dog toy out of them all that typically just won't last.  There is a special relationship between a dog and their bone, and it typically doesn't end until the bone is gone.  As with anything there are hundreds of options when it comes to dog bones, from pork and beef bones to nylon flavored bones.  We have taken the guess work out of choosing and have offered up  the top long lasting dog bones that your friend is sure to enjoy.

Nylabone Big Chews

In our quest for Indestructible dog toys there is one dog bone that has set itself apart from the rest of the pack…The Nylabone Big Chews– these bones are perfect for the powerful chewer in your family.  We first discovered the Nylabone with Kirsi many years ago. She absolutely loved rawhide bones but devoured them too fast and constantly gagged and choked on them.  We vowed no to the rawhide from then on, and the Nylabone quickly found a place in our home.  While we thought the standard Nylabone was great, however it didn't last 2 days when Mulligan came along…We were back on the hunt, until– We found the Nylabone Big Chews and have not looked back since.  They offer the best durability and longevity in any dog bone I have ever seen, on average we go through 1-2 a year with both dogs working on them constantly.

West Paw Design Hurley

Is it a dog bone or a chew toy?  Whatever you decide,it should be described as tough, durable or maybe– Indestructible?  We call it an indestructible dog bone because of its shape and durability.  This is one of our favorite bones as it is soft enough to toss around the house for a good old fashioned game of fetch and it is durable enough that Mulligan can chew on it for hours and barely put a dent in it.  West Paw Design hit it on the nose with the Hurley, it offers great chewing benefits of a traditional bone without any of the downfalls like associated chewing noise and painful injury from your dog dropping it on your bare feet…Made from durable Zogoflex material West Paw Design guarantees that if your dog is one of the less than one percent that can damage Hurley, they will give you a one time free replacement or refund!

Indestructible Dog Balls

If there had to be only one toy category that could truly be called indestructible we would want– Indestructible Dog Balls.  We go through balls…You name it, we've tried it.   We've spent countless hours throwing balls with Mulligan and he has managed to destroy darn near every one, in one way or another.  Tennis balls don't stand a chance against his massive jaws and he really doesn't care for hard rubber balls, although most hold up fairly well to the abuse.  What kind of balls does Mulligan prefer?  Read on to find out…

Chuckit! Ultra Balls

You've probably seen the Chuckit! at one time or another in one shape or another at your local pet store.  They are a great ball launcher intended to throw your pets tennis or like sized ball with little effort.  Typically the Chuckit comes with a standard tennis style ball, needless to say they don't last, at least not with our little guy on the job.  Shortly after having nothing to throw with our new found Chuckit, I looked around the net and found the Chuckit Ultra balls, these have quickly become Mulligans fave…They're soft enough that he can squeeze them a bit, and they are durable enough that we see many months of use out of them…We always have some on hand, because eventually they will give up the ghost, but it does take a while.

Vibram K9 Ball

If you've ever looked at the soles on your boots you may have noticed an unmistakable yellow Vibram badge.  Vibram has been making world class shoe soles for years and recently introduced an entire line of  tough dog toys.  Mulligan has grown very fond of his Vibram K9 ball and is starting to favor it over his old Chuckit! balls.  The Vibram ball is molded in the USA by Vibram using clean rubber.  They are tough, hollow to fill with treats, and available in two sizes, they also incorporate the Vibram Performance Proven Lug Design for crazy bounces and long lasting fun, which makes Mulligan happy.  We already see this new toy as an Indestructible dog ball seeing as it's been through Mulligan's torture test for the past 3 months and its still going strong.

Indestructible Dog Frisbees

If your dog is like ours he tends to think his frisbee is his tug toy.  No matter how many times we've tried to convince Mulligan that the frisbee is not a tug toy, he still disagrees.  After fetching the frisbee he'll shake it viciously in Kirsi's face until he gets her to tug on it with him.  This is what he does, some would say he's obnoxious, we think it's normal because he's a little on the wild side.  Naturally, we now had to search for a tough dog frisbee to add to our collection of– Indestructible Dog Toys.

Pet Stages Orka Flyer

We were on a mission– tough dog frisbee or flyer that can withstand the aggressive dog chewing as well as some serious bouts of tug.  At first glance the Orka Flyer looks like another soft gel-like rubber toy that will make its way into the trash rather quick.  Much to our surprise this was not the case, not even close.  It see's at least an hours use a day playing frisbee dog, and a little more if Mulligan can convince the old girl to play tug with him.  We have been using this jewel since December '09 and it's still going strong, not even a pin hole, tear, or stretch / stress mark.  We love it, the dogs love it and if this one ever bites the dust we will get another.

West Paw Design Zisc

Another victory for West Paw Design, their Zogoflex material really comes through on this tough dog frisbee.  When it comes to frisbees Mulligan likes to play tug as well as sneak in a chew session when he's retrieving it, hence our need for an Indestructible dog frisbee.  The West Paw Design Zisc manages to hold up to Mulligan's most aggressive chewing sessions while keeping its shape and remaining unscathed.  From the looks of it, this one's going to be a winner, at least so far, we'll keep you up to date if anything changes.

Edit: We are into our 4th week of using the Zisc and it still looks fairly fresh, less a few teeth impressions…This one's a keeper!

Indestructible Dog Tug Toys

Our dog tug toys go through a lot, hence we go through a lot of tug toys.  Tug toys are great, they offer exercise for both you and your dog as well as letting your friend burn off some of that excess energy.  These toys are likely subject to more damage then any other dog toys as your dog will probably be using his best chomp and shaking quite a bit.  We learned quickly with Mulligan and Kirsi that we needed a solid tug toy that would with stand their powerful jaws and Mulligans 'serrated-knife' like teeth.  We had a few rubber tug toys that went south on us and had pretty much ruled them out.  The rope tug toys tended to last, however when Mulligan would sneak in a chew on his rope tug toy it quickly got shredded.

Kong Tails

We've searched high and low for this one, we even tried the Kong Tug toy  (you know the one–it has two plastic loops and the rubber flex and bite areas) however Mulligan liked the hard plastic more than the rubber and well…you know the rest.  We already knew how much we all liked the original Kong.  When we found the Kong Tails our search was over.  This dog tug toy uses the same original Kong and simply adds rugged nylon strips for the tails and a nylon tug handle for you grab a hold…Perfect.  We've wised up a bit and have put this tug toy on reserve and only bring it out for a round of dog tug and that helps the toy life a lot.  While Mulligan seems to dig it we are still waiting as it does show wear and we know that nylon will only last for so long, but this toy definitely deserves the title– Indestructible Dog Toy.

Vibram Stick with Rope

We thought we would revisit the idea of a rope tug toy however we knew Mulligan would shred the standard rope toy so we set our requirements a bit higher than normal.  We wanted a rope toy that had more of a braided synthetic rope and not a twisted cotton rope something similar to climbing rope would be the answer. After putting the Vibram K9 ball to the test we definitely were interested in more tough dog toys from Vibram.    After seeing the Vibram Stick for the first time we loved the idea of a tough rubber dog toy attached to a rope, seemed like the perfect match (kinda like the Kong Tails above).  After countless hours of endless games of tug-o-war we are finally ready to tag this an Indestructible Dog Toy…Mulligan has managed to log a couple months on this tug toy and it's not showing any signs of going anywhere soon….Another success for Vibram!
