Why FBLA and Business EducationThe Small Business Administration
reports that students who participate in FBLA and Business
Education programs demonstrate increased initiative and
selfconfidence. School interests such students more because they
see how acquiring practical skills and learning to solve problems
contribute to future success. Some additional benefits of FBLA and
Business Education include Community Understanding, Business
Management Skills, Orientation to Change, Understanding of Market
Economy, Individual Personal Growth, Expanded Creative Thinking,
DecisionMaking Skills, Sense of Career Choices, Application of
Technical Skills and Experiences.Technical employment is the
fastestgrowing segment of the labor market. Professional
occupations make up only 20 percent of all jobs. Admission into a
fouryear academic program is not the only opportunity for young
people to access higherwage and higherbenefit employment. Graduates
of twoyear college programs in high demand occupations usually find
highpaying jobs quickly. As of 2002, 80 percent of jobs available
to young people after leaving high school require highlevel skills.
The requirements for success in virtually every career path have
changed dramatically. New types of occupational fields have
emerged, and countless jobs have become obsolete. At the same time,
a vast majority of new existing jobs have become more complex. High
performance workplaces stress teamwork, and a broader knowledge
base for all workers to allow them to adapt to rapidlychanging
workplace technology and structures. Young people entering the work
force today will make major job changes an average of seven to nine
times during their lives. This does not mean they will start over
each time, but it does mean the students must have realistic
expectations about careers and be prepared for lifelong learning to
remain competitive in the job market over time. The FBLA and
Business Program at Hidden Valley High School prepares students
with broad based, transferable academic and careerlife skills
leading to a range of options and opportunities beyond high school.

GRANTS PASSGrants Pass is located 250 miles south of the
Metropolitan city of Portland. It is home to approximately 32,000
residents and is constantly growing. Grants Pass is known for its
regal setting and the famous Rogue River, which attracts thousands
of tourists every year. The citys motto was Its the climate until
about a decade ago, when the citys commissioners decided to
officially change it to Where the Rogue River runs, although the
famous sign still hangs majestically where is has been since the
1920s.The citys mascot is a caveman because of the nearby Oregon
Caves, which attracts even more tourists than the Rogue River. The
Caveman stands proudly at the top of 7th Street at the north
entrance of Grants Pass.Even though Grants Pass is still growing,
it still maintains that classic smalltown atmosphere. Local
business owners annually raise money for honorable causes. The
strong sense of community is the mindset that helps our local FBLA
chapter thrive. Our towns leaders and business owners are
incredibly supportive of our efforts in the community..Finally, the
city of Grants Pass is a gold mine for the FBLA chapters in the
area. Grants Pass is where volunteer opportunities and fantastic
scenery brings in more residents, this makes the opportunities grow
exponentially for FBLA.
