bwin.com Marks Champions League Final With £50 Free Bet Competition

LONDON, May 17, 2012 /PRNewswire/ –

In addition to offering industry-leading odds of 17/20 on a Bayern Munich
win in normal time, bwin are giving away a free GBP50 bet for correctly guessing the time

of the first goal in the Champions League final

With the world’s biggest club game just days away, bwin [http://bwinbetting.com ] is
offering punters the chance to win a completely free GBP50 bet.

Despite most pundits predicting a Real Madrid v Barcelona final when the semi-final
line-up was revealed, it is English side Chelsea who travel to Germany to take on Bayern
Munich in their own back yard for Saturday’s Champions League
[http://bwinbetting.com/category/cups/champions-league ] showpiece. Should they follow up
their semi-final success over holders Barca and lift the trophy, the Blues will become the
first London side to win Europe’s premier club football competition.

Bayern, who knocked out nine-times winners Real Madrid in the last four, are bidding
for their fifth European title at the highest level and in the lead-up to the game, bwin
is offering football betting fans the chance to win a GBP50 free bet which comes with no
strings attached.

To be in with a chance of claiming bwin’s prize, customers simply have to guess the
time of the first goal scored during normal time in the 2011-12 Champions League final.
The person who predicts the correct time (or, if nobody gets it exactly right – the
entrant who goes closest) will have a GBP50 free bet credited to their account.

To be in with a chance of winning, customers just need to send their name, bwin
username and the exact minute they think the first goal will be scored in the Champions
League final to ukcompetitions@bwin.org and there is no deposit required. Non-members
can register here [http://adserver.itsfogo.com/click.aspx?zoneid=137490 ].

If more than one person guesses the correct or closest time, then all successful
entries will be put into a hat. There will be up to three winners chosen at random and
each of those people will have their account credited with a GBP50 free bet. To read the
full terms and conditions for the competition, click here
[http://bwinbetting.com/bayern-munich-chelsea-win-completely-free-50-bet,19592.html ]. In
addition to the competition, bwin is offering industry-leading odds for the Champions
League final.

Bayern odds of 17/20 on a win in normal time are very attractive – a price which may
be seized on by Tottenham fans hoping the German team prevails, as a Bayern victory would
ensure Spurs qualify for next season’s Champions League. As a Chelsea success would mean
Tottenham, who clinched the Premier League’s final Champions League qualification spot by
virtue of a fourth-place finish, would have to give up their slot so that the English
holders could defend the trophy.

Those predicting a tight game will be interested to hear that bwin’s offer of 3/1 on a
draw after normal time is the leading bookies’ price. Chelsea to make history and win for
the first time, without the need for extra time or penalties, is available at 27/10.

Notes to editors

Additional information:

As well as being in with a chance of winning the GBP50 free bet for guessing the time
of the first goal in the Champions League final, new customers can claim a GBP25 free bet
by signing up for a bwin account and depositing GBP25.

Using this to back Bayern Munich to win in normal time would win GBP46.25 should the
bet prove successful.

Audit notes: No more daily in New Orleans, McClatchy, private equity

If ever a town needed a newspaper, it’s New Orleans.

But David Carr reports that Newhouse is preparing big layoffs at the Times-Picayune, which will no longer be a daily newspaper.

Newhouse Newspapers, which owns the Times-Picayune, will apparently be working off a blueprint the company used in Ann Arbor, Mich., where it reduced the frequency of the Ann Arbor News, emphasized the Web site as a primary distributor of news and in the process instituted wholesale layoffs to cut costs…

The plans have been kept under wraps, but the newspaper will likely cease to exist as a daily newspaper, and will publish two or three times a week, according to the employees.

My first newspaper internship was as a copy editor at a Newhouse paper in Alabama, The Huntsville Times, and I remember marveling at Newhouse’s no-layoffs policy. It really had such a thing.

How times have changed.

— Despite a stock that’s off 97 percent in seven years, McClatchy is still publishing daily newspapers (for now). And it’s finally going leaky paywall, a la The New York Times.

Err… actually, it’s going to kick the tires a bit more on the paywall thing:

The approach will offer readers a new print-digital subscription that will include access to multimedia editions for a relatively small increase of home delivery rates. We’ll also offer online-only users a digital subscription that will be prompted after a set number of page views. We’ve arrived at this combination after a lot of research, involving McClatchy papers and others, which shows that a thoughtfully crafted, opt-out digital subscription is a good fit with our overall readership and circulation strategy. In the coming months, we’ll begin a final round of testing with a handful of McClatchy papers (first up will be Sacramento, Fort Worth, Modesto, Biloxi and Columbus). The experiences of these papers will determine how and under what schedule to extend to all papers.

Our experiments with pay approaches, starting with Modesto more than a year ago and moving to several other McClatchy papers, have taught us a number of things. The pay model is a complex move that has to be part of wider plan for how we distribute and value our content. We’ve learned that many light online users are unlikely to become subscribers — but that our loyal print and online customers are willing to sign up in exchange for a multi-media subscription that would include the print edition, web, smart phones and the e-edition. Above all, we found that the impact of placing a clear value on our content is among the most important messages we can send as part of this transition.

Here’s hoping McClatchy still has a stock price by the time it concludes this final round of testing.

— Josh Kosman writes for Rolling Stone on “Why Private Equity Firms Like Bain Really Are the Worst of Capitalism”:

Here’s what private equity is really about: A firm like Bain obtains cheap credit and uses it to acquire a company in a “leveraged buyout.” “Leverage” refers to the fact that that the company being purchased is forced to pay for about 70 percent of its own acquisition, by taking out loans. If this sounds like an odd arrangement, that’s because it is. Imagine a homebuyer purchasing a house and making the bank responsible for repaying its own loan, and you start to get the picture.

O.K., but what about this much more virtuous business of swooping in and restoring struggling companies to financial health? Well, that’s not a large part of what private equity firms do, either. In fact, they more typically target profitable, slow-growth market leaders. (Private equity firms presently own companies employing one of every 10 U.S. workers, or 10 million people.)

And that’s when the fun starts. Once the buyout is completed, the private equity guys start swinging the meat axe, aggressively cutting costs wherever they can – so that the company can start paying off its new debt – by laying off workers and cutting capital costs. This process often boosts operating profit without a significant hit to the business, but only in the short term; in the long run, the austerity approach makes it difficult for companies to stay competitive, not least because money that would otherwise have been invested in expansion or product development – which might increase revenue down the line – is used to pay off the company’s debt.

Kosman wrote The Buyout of America: How Private Equity Is Destroying Jobs and Killing The American Economy’, which has a killer chapter on Bain Capital. Go read it.

Dutch ace Van Persie told to stay at Arsenal… by his mum!

By
Sportsmail Reporter

Robin van Persie’s mother has told the Dutch striker to stay at Arsenal.

Along with his wife, Bouchra, Van Persie’s mum Jose has highlighted the reasons for him to remain at the north London club.

‘Arsenal love him and that’s a great incentive to stay. Arsenal are a fantastic club,’ she said.

Mummy'sboy:RobinvanPersiehasbeentoldtostayatArsenal

Mummy’s boy: Robin van Persie has been told to stay at Arsenal

‘They have no debts and Robin is idolised there.’

The Gunners are trying to tie the striker down by offering a new £130,000-per-week deal as well as a £5million re-signing bonus, but interest from Manchester City, Barcelona and Juventus is turning the striker’s head.

Van Persie’s mum told The Sun: ‘He reminds me of a deer, the elegant way he moves. Robin is an artistic footballer, a dancer.

‘But sometimes it’s war in those stadiums. The emotions are so raw. If he’s in pain, I feel that pain, too.’

The 28-year-old earned Player of the Year awards from both football writers and his peers, after bagging 41 goals in 53 appearances this season.

Van Persie thanked his mother for helping him along the way.

He said: ‘It’s because of my mother that I’m the man I am today.

Thanksmum:VanPersieisgratefulforhersupport

Thanks mum: Van Persie is grateful for her support

‘She always encouraged me to think for myself. It’s always important for me to get Mum’s opinion of my performance after a match and I make no excuses about being a mummy’s boy.

‘The women in my life are very influential, even on the football pitch.

‘My mother, wife and sisters are always honest and sometimes harsh in their criticism. I respect their opinions.

‘And Dina (his daughter) is my princess. I am a typical doting dad. She can twist me round her little finger just by smiling.

‘It’s always dangerous to believe your own publicity but, by talking to the women in my life and looking at my kids, I will remain firmly grounded.’

His wife also thinks he should stay at the Emirates.

Bouchra said: ‘Arsenal showed faith in Robin when he was going through a lean time, so we should not repay them by thinking about other clubs.

‘Our home life and our children are happy in London.’

Listen to your wife/mother/family RvP and stay at Arsenal. As long as you don’t end up at City I’ll be as happy as Larry. Does anyone honestly think he’ll go through another season injury free? Not a chance. Quality footballer though.

- RSoles, Morcambe, Lancs, 29/5/2012 23:41

RVP is RVP because theres someone named WENGER for the TRUST in those LEAN MOMENTS .. dont leave Arsenal RVP :: this ones from a Chelsea Fan .. you give a hard time to the rest of the clubs .. yes, money is something one deserves for all the hard work, so maybe arsenal should pay him more, but not let him go :) :)

Ladbrokes Free Bet For Group 1 Races at Epsom

Epsom plays host to a number of exciting Group 1 contests with the Derby and Oaks card unfolding over Friday and Saturday. There’s a lot to like about the several high-class races we’ll see and if we can get a few favourites beaten then the payouts are going to be extremely generous. The Derby picture is very much about one horse while the Oaks seems to be between a limited group or three or four.

CASH IN YOUR FREE BET WITH LADBROKES ON THE 2012 EPSOM CARD!

Coolmore’s Maybe was well-beaten on her seasonal debut this year at Newmarket when finishing third ten lengths back. Sent off as the 13/8 favourite on the day, it appears as though punters still have a lot of confidence in her ability to get the job done and several bookmakers have her floating at around 11/4.

The Fugue is certainly getting a fair amount of buzz and William Buick will be fancying his chances for this one. Effectively, most are assuming that we haven’t seen the bottom of this lightly-raced filly yet and we all saw what we she was capable of when she captured the Group 3 Musidora Stakes just a few weeks after running fourth on debut. She looks set to improve with this start and is trading at a competitive 3/1 price. Undefeated Vow gets Johnny Murtagh and will be looking to improve off of a recent listed score at Lingfield. A 5/1 listing shows that she’s very much in the reckoning and capable of being a factor with continued progress.

Dubai World Cup winner Monterosso lines up in the Group 1 Diamond Jubilee Coronation Cup with a 6/1 price and he’s going to be taking on a seasoned group of international veterans that includes the upstart St Leger winner Masked Marvel, with odds-on selection St Nicholas Abbey set to get most of the attention. He was beaten a length when sent off at 2/5 on his seasonal debut at the Curragh and many are expecting him to improve here. Treasure Beach trades at a competitive 10/1.

Camelot heads into the Epsom Derby as the prohibitive favourite with many bookmakers listing him at 4/6. Bonfire is considered a genuine contender and his Dante Stakes victory was perhaps better than the margin might suggest. His 5/1 price will likely fluctuate so keeping an eye on undefeated Main Sequence may not be a bad idea either. You’ll find the chestnut son of Aldebran trading at 10/1.

Galileo’s son Imperial Monarch is also undefeated, albeit from only a two race sample. Look for him in the neighbourhood of about 20/1 and looking value for the place bet.

Big Impact set to make huge impact in Owners’ Bonus Series – Heat 2 at …

Big Impact set to make huge impact in Owners’ Bonus Series – Heat 2 at Peterborough

Big Impact is in good shape and has the best chance of stealing the show in second heat of the Grade A4 Owners’ Bonus Series, taking place at Peterborough on Wednesday, May 30th.

The white and black dog stepped into this class following a tremendous A5 triumph earlier this month. He perpetuated his good work to do a fine job last time around, but remained unlucky.

Despite a clear ride, J. Bloomfield’s trainee could not surpass Unique Shaw and as a result, missed the gold medal by a length’s distance. After two good efforts, the dashing hound is full of confidence. So, one can expect him to show his best and seal the
first position tonight.

He is due to face five speedy runners including Mount Nelson, Zap, Local Honda, Isle Of Jura and Catunda Joanie. The ultimate champion will bag a hefty cash prize worth £62.

Mount Nelson has managed to earn reasonable odds, but does not exist in our shortlist. After completing the order of finish in a similar contest, the black and white dog improved his work to some extent, but that was not enough to earn him success.

David Pruhs’ trainee ended up third in his last outing. His recent stats are not attractive, but since he belongs to a good kennel, the brave punters can bet on him.

Zap has a good chance of finishing among top-3. It is hard to recommend her for the first place, because she has been in poor form over the past few weeks. In both of her previous races, the blue and brindle bitch finished fourth on the table.

Catunda Joanie holds plenty of experience, but it is indeed a tricky contest. Similarly, Isle Of Jura does not have bright chances of winning. Local Honda is coming into this class after facing a bit weaker oppositions, thus she might find it too difficult.

No hound is in as good shape as Big Impact. Everything looks in his favour and only a huge upset can stop him from bagging the winning cheque. Good luck to everyone.

Jon Wertheim: Serena shocked in first-round upset

SerenaWilliams

PARIS — SI.com caught up with Sports Illustrated senior writer Jon Wertheim after Serena Williams’ 4-6, 7-6 (5), 6-3 loss to Virginie Razzano in the first round of the French Open.

SI.com: Serena came in as one of the hotter players on clay, what the heck happened?

Jon Wertheim: Good question. And we’re still trying to process that in Paris. Serena came in as the favorite and her clay preparation was unimpeachable. She never – NEVER! – had lost in the first round of a major. She was up a set and 5-1 in the tiebreaker to a gallant but hardly formidable opponent. Then – WHAM! Razzano stole the set. Her confidence spiked while Serena’s plummeted. Razzano ran off 13 straight points – when was the last time Serena capitulated like this? – and took a 5-0 lead in the third set.

Serena clawed back. She always does. But in an epic, 23-minute final game at 5-3, Razzano went for her shots and finally, after eight match points, prevailed. Incroyabel!

SI.com: Were there any lingering signs of injury, or was it a mental lapse?

Wertheim: No this was mental. Even between sets — when the match was still very winnable — Serena was crying. Neither movement nor conditioning was her downfall. To her credit, she ruled out any injuries afterward. “No, no, no, I didn’t feel anything abnormal,” she told reporters. “I was 100% healthy.”

I think that at her age, she realizes there are a finite number of chances left, she – uncharacteristically – got tight for a spell. By the time she loosened up, it was too late.

SI.com: Did Razzano win it, or Serena lose it?

Wertheim: Glad you asked. The headline is “Serena loses” but I think Razzano deserves heaps of credit here. For half an hour she could scarcely miss. While she tightened once up 5-0, she didn’t let the occasion overwhelm her — as similar occasions have overwhelmed plenty of others similarly poised for a monumental upset. Sure, she needed eight match points to close out the match, but it wasn’t as though she cowered or choked. She went for her shots, made Serena play a lot of balls and finally induced an error. Plus, she played through those hideous hindrances that could easily have unmoored her. A very courageous effort by Razzano and she deserves immense credit.

SI.com: What does this do for the women’s draw?

Wertheim: Somewhere in a hotel suite, Maria Sharapova is doing an informal Dancing with the Stars tryout as we speak. Seriously, the draw was wide open. Now it is a canyon. A big opportunity for a lot of players. Can Victoria Azarenka consolidate her success from Australia? (Provided these voguish “hindrance calls” won’t be her undoing.) With Serena – her one true nemesis out – can Sharapova get back on the board? Are there players emboldened by Razzano who will meet the moment? Plenty of plots left here.

SI.com: How did she respond to the loss? Will this affect her confidence for Olympics and grass?

Wertheim: Serena seemed almost shellshocked afterward. You asked “What the heck just happened?” and you get the feeling Serena is subjecting herself to a similar line of questioning.

“Well, I just started making a lot of errors,” Serena said of the change of momentum in the second-set tiebreak. “I mean, the whole match, I just didn’t play at all the way I have been practicing. .. It’s disappointing. But it’s life. Things could be a lot worse. I haven’t had the easiest past six months. Nothing I can’t deal with.

Let’s end with a positive gloss for Serena. A) She’s in a lot better place now than she was a year ago when an embolism threatened her career 2) Wimbledon begins in 27 days.

Mail call

Brian Baker. Wimbledon? Olympics? Davis Cup?

Mike, Chicago

• Let’s go pessimistic to optimistic. The Olympics won’t happen. The Olympics are virtually an impossibility. That’s just a numbers game. (Of course Baker reaching the second round of a major was a virtual impossibility, too.) The Davis Cup is a stretch, too. Hard to bounce the various players who not only have superior rankings but have been loyal for years.

Wimbledon? Now you’re talking. Baker has missed the cutoff, so no matter how he fares in Paris, he’ll have to qualify for the main draw. Unless he gets a wild card. What’s that? They always go to British players, no matter how modestly ranked? Not necessarily. The LTA has been outspoken about stopping years of coddling and giving the wild cards to the most deserving players. After Lleyton Hewitt (a former champ, albeit a full decade ago) who’s more deserving than Baker? Not only a great narrative — Jeremy Lin, Kurt Warner and Andre Agassi rolled into one! — but fully deserving on the basis of his results this year.

Baker, incidentally, will play at least one event on grass this summer. The Campbell’s Hall of Fame event in Newport has already added him to a stacked field.

In light of Monday’s happenings (see: Alex Bogomolov), I’m curious: What’s the unspoken protocol on retiring from a match? If you’re hurt, you’re hurt, which is what the Russian maintained, but retiring while down match point seems like incredibly poor form.

Dawn R., Chicago

• Several years ago, a player — I can’t recall whom — pulled out of an important match on account of food poisoning. I recall thinking, “Take some Tums and try to play, baby.” Of course, life being heavy into irony, shortly thereafter, I came down with food poisoning. Crawling from bedroom to bathroom, felt like competing in an Ironman. The thought of playing a competitive tennis match was laughable.

Which brings us to yesterday. It was a weird scene, no question. It struck most of us as somewhat shabby that Bogomolov couldn’t have played one lousy additional point and let Clement win the match more authentically. (Who else thought of the Mauresmo-Henin Aussie Open final?) But clearly Bogomolov was in agony, his body betraying him badly after all the time on court. You question the severity of a player’s discomfort at your peril. And let’s give Clement his credit, too…

Has Arnaud Clement ever played anything less than a five-set match during the French Open? It seems whenever I see him he goes five tough sets, even though sometimes you get the feeling he does it for the show.

Mulans, Riga

• I don’t think anyone is going five sets for show. But Mulans’ point is well-taken. Check out these results.

Jon, given the increasing economic uncertainty in Europe, are you aware if the European tournaments, including RG, are hedging their purses in order to avoid getting caught (or even potentially profiting) from a falling euro? Not the sexiest tennis question but curious currency geeks are going to be all over this.

Neil Grammer, Toronto

• I beg to differ. Fluctuations in the currency market are inherently sexy. Arbitrage? So hot.

Where were we? Yeah, I’m not sure it’s worth it for the tournaments to hedge since A) it’s really not all that much money and B) it seems to me the tournaments are pretty hedged because their gate revenue, sponsorship revenue (and usually much of the TV revenue) is also denominated in the local currency. So, my guess is whatever they lose on the purse side from currency movements, they ought to more than make up on the same currency movements.

It probably makes more sense for the players to hedge, since they get only one side of the equation, no? Then again, I suppose on a global tour, the players are inherently hedged. If Serena Williams takes a hit when the dollar is weak, she makes up for it when the euro and British pound is strong. If Federer and Nadal suffer from a weak euro, they make up for it elsewhere. … If any currency geeks have additional thoughts, fire away!

Petra Kvitova can slug her way, but not quite. Every time that she wins, she hits several amazing touch shots at crucial moments, and those are the difference. I refer you to Istanbul and the Fed Cup for evidence. Why is this missed in most reporting?

Bobby Skipsey, Provincetown, Mass.

• This must be a hot message board topic or somesuch. A few months ago, a reader even compiled for us a greatest hits video of Kvitova slicing, volleying and deploying drop shots. I still say she is a slugger, not a grinder, not a stylist, not a counterpuncher. Kvitova — who looked good today — pounds the ball and while she may be capable of different gears, it’s not her touch that will take her to the title.

Dear Mr. W: where do you stay in Paris? Not stalking you, just interested in what kind of perks tennis writers get. The photo you linked on Monday 28th is from some Chinese newspaper or magazine, and the original caption just says: “4 great ball stars at welcome dinner” or something close, without naming the stars or the sports…

M Ng, Vancouver, Canada

• I’m staying at the corner of Rue McClananhan and Rue The Day. Seriously, when I travel for work in the U.S., I often tend toward conventional (boring) hostelries. I hoard Marriott points the way Nadal hoards ranking points during clay season. You know what you’re getting. There’s always a gym. There’s always wireless. There’s almost always Starbuck’s in the lobby.

In Paris, though, I feel as though staying at a big hotel is the equivalent of eating at the Olive Garden in Manhattan. So I’m staying at a pension in the Sixth, a block off St. Germain. It’s long on charm, short on amenities (and square footage) and is perfect for the occasion.

Shots, Miscellany

• Though not on par w/Gasquet-Baghdatis, the three-letter name abbreviation for Querrey-Tipsarevic (Que-tip) looked jarring on the screen.

• Another rough outing for Donald Young, who went down meekly to Grigor Dimitrov.

• Thaddeus Oliver, Naga, Philippines: “Jon, if I’m not mistaken the French dislike for Nadal stemmed from the Nadal-Grosjean match in 2005 where the crowd halted play in the 2nd set, booing for around 9 minutes over a controversial call against their countryman. Nadal said afterward “”The crowd yesterday didn’t really behave as you should when you’re watching a match of tennis, I’ve never seen anything like that in Spain, but this is France.”

•Alex Gorbounov of Cary, NC wonders: Jon, can we just start using “clayer” instead of a mouthful “clay-court specialist”?

• Take that, equal prize money.

• Jan Kooijman of Rotterdam, The Netherlands, has Long lost siblings: Gilles Simon and Robert Pattinson.

Robin van Persie’s mum tells him to stay at Arsenal

By

Robin van Persie’s mother has told the Dutch striker to stay at Arsenal.

Along with his wife, Bouchra, Van Persie’s mum Jose has highlighted the reasons for him to remain at the north London club.

‘Arsenal love him and that’s a great incentive to stay. Arsenal are a fantastic club,’ she said.
