How to edit your comments on Facebook

EditingFacebookcomments
Facebook recently rolled out an update to its commenting system. Now, instead of pressing Comment, you simply press the Enter key to save a comment. More excitingly, however, Facebook silently rolled out another new feature at the same time: you can now edit comments!

If you comment on a friend's status update, link or photo, you can now press the 'X' in the top right corner to edit it. Your comment instantly turns into a text box where you can alter what you've written; then just press Enter to save it again.

There are some caveats, though! First, if someone comments after you, your comment is locked; you can still delete it, but you can't edit. Second, there seems to be some kind of time limit on editing. The editing window might be as short as 60 seconds. Still, for those of you that have 'accidentally' submitted comments by pressing Enter, the ability to edit is a godsend.

It's also worth noting that everyone still gets email (and SMS!) notifications when you comment, and when you edit comments.

Google Voice comes to Sprint customers, no app or porting required

googlevoicesprint
Google has made a pair of announcements concerning a tighter partnership with Sprint in the U.S. First, the Nexus S has arrived on Sprint's 4G network. Second, the two companies have worked together to deliver a seamless, app-free Google Voice experience to Sprint customers.

Current Sprint users can now make a painless switch to Google Voice. No number porting is required -- existing Sprint phone numbers will just work. That brings the whole enchilada, including ringing multiple phones from a single number, voice mail transcriptions, and the ability to answer calls in Gmail. Other features include cheap international calling rates, per-caller customized voicemail greetings, call blocking, and call recording.

Interested Sprint customer can flip the Google Voice switch by visiting this page. There's a video that demonstrates the new service after the break.

Useful keyboard shortcuts for Twitter.com

Twitter.comkeyboardshortcuts
When Twitter.com unveiled its recent overhaul at the end of 2010, one of the least-discussed features was the addition of some excellent keyboard shortcuts.

Some keyboard shortcuts only work from some pages, but we'll mark those where appropriate.
  • n -- post a new status update (works from any page)
  • r -- reply to your selected tweet
  • t -- retweet (only works on Twitter profiles other than your own)
  • m -- direct message (but it doesn't auto-fill the recipient)
  • / -- move the cursor to the search box
  • . -- move back to the top of the page, and check feed for updates
  • g then h -- go to your home page (twitter.com)
  • g then r -- see your @ mentions
  • g then m -- see your direct messages
  • g then p -- go to your profile page (twitter.com/username)
  • g then u -- go to a specific user's profile page (it pops up a dialog box)
For a complete list of keyboard shortcuts, type ?.

Now, if you don't use Twitter.com (which is about 65% of Twitter's users), these keyboard shortcuts probably won't work. Every installed Twitter client has different keyboard shortcuts (and some don't have any at all). If you want to lessen your mouse hand dependency, your best bet is to simply head to Google and type the name of your client + "keyboard shortcuts".

Another Netflix Content Idea: Saving Cancelled Cult Hits

altYesterday, I laid out why the new Netflix original content plan could be a game-changer in terms of television content and the ultimate disruption of cable. But it still all depends on if the show(s) they pick end up being hits. It appears that Netflix's first bet, House of Cards, is just about as good of a bet as you could make ? but it's still no guarantee. Here's an idea that could be much more of a guarantee: saving cult hits. Each year, dozens of shows on network and cable television get cancelled. Most of these cancellations are for good reason. But every once in a while the hammer comes down on a show that's considered to be a cult hit ? or one that could turn out to be a real hit, if given more time. The problem, of course, is that these shows often don't have the massive viewership numbers to sell a large amount of advertising against. But that model doesn't apply to Netflix. alt

RIP Digg.

Startups in Silicon Valley are like old generals. They don't die anymore, buoyed on life-rafts of lingering venture capital and modest revenues. They just fade away, eventually purchased for assets that are a shadow of their former promise. It's pretty clear that Digg is on that path. The company isn't dead, but it's been fading away for a while, and its soul is all but gone. The company can spin it however it wants-- the final nail in the coffin is news that founder Kevin Rose-- long Digg's greatest asset-- is leaving.alt

Firefox 4 RC1 available to download, expected to be the final build

Firefox4RC
Just a few moments ago, the Mozilla QA team signed off on the first Firefox 4 Release Candidate build. It is immediately available from the release FTP server, and from the Firefox Beta website later today.

As far as the Firefox 4 development team are concerned, this is expected to be the final, release-ready build of Firefox 4; Mike Beltzner, Mozilla's Director of Firefox, says that this RC "represents the code we intend to ship as Firefox 4."

There are no significant changes between beta 12 and the RC. A lot of bugs have been squashed, and it looks like plug-ins are finally up to release-level stability.

Download Firefox 4 RC1 via FTP (HTTP mirrors will be available shortly)

Update: here's an HTTP download of the en-US build

Researchers tout self-repairing multi-core processors

alt
The race for ever-tinier computer chips is on, and barring physical limitations, doesn't seem to be slowing anytime soon -- but with chips, as with humans, the smaller they get, the more fragile they become. A team of researchers called CRISP (Cutting edge Reconfigurable ICs for Stream Processing) is working to create a self-repairing multi-core processor that would allow on-chip components to keep on shrinking, while combating concerns over accelerated degradation. Basically, the team's conceptualized a chip that allows for 100 percent functionality, even with faulty components. With multiple cores sharing tasks, and a run-time resource manager doling out those tasks, the chip can continue to degrade without ever compromising its intended functions -- a process CRISP calls graceful degradation. Once one core fails, the on-chip manager assigns its task to another core, continuing on in this fashion for the complete lifetime of the chip. Of course the technology is still in its infancy, but if CRISP's chips comes to fruition, we could see virtually indestructible processors that make 14nm look bulky by comparison.

Researchers tout self-repairing multi-core processors originally appeared on Engadget on Fri, 18 Mar 2011 18:48:00 EDT. Please see our terms for use of feeds.
