Your Questions About Water Filter

alt

Betty asks…

Does an old water filter work better than no filter at all?

At my school I use a pur sink filter. It’s quite old and has been going for 2 cycles.

Do you think the water quality would be better using this old filter than the plain water that coming from the tap?

alt

Jack Coburn answers:

Got to be better than no filter at all!

alt

Sandy asks…

How does the cuisinart water filtration system work? How is it put together?

I let the filter soak for 15 mins and did everything the instructions said to do(I think) but the filter is only dripping water…. it will take three days to filter the water at this point! Help please.
The filter dripping is my only issue.. well, and the fact that the filter timer won’t come on. ha.

alt

Jack Coburn answers:

Soaking the filter for the Cuisinart WCH-1500 is usually the hardest part of the setup. For complete instructions: visit best water purification reviews

Some interesting Questions and My Answers on Water Filters

alt

James asks…

In an aquarium do you need to have a separate filter for fresh and salt
water

At the moment I have fresh water aquarium and am thinking of getting a salt water
aquarium as well. Would I need different filters for each type?

alt

Jack Coburn answers:

Main thing here is to research this yourself, I’m not
an expert on aquariums. So check up on what you need for filtering for a
salt water system. As far as I know there is no real difference between
the two. What I do know about the difference between fresh water fish and
saltwater fish is their ability to handle pollution. Small levels are OK
for fresh fish but a saltwater aquarium can be badly affected so the
filters need to be real high quality. As I say I’m no expert on this, my
specialty is knowing about drinking water filtration.

alt

Betty asks…

I’ve got a GE refigerator with an ice machine and water dispenser, the
water smells bad – any idea what may be the problem?

Just checked and there doesn’t seem to be a filter in the water pipe going into
the refrigerator.

alt

Jack Coburn answers:

With this problem the only way to deal with it if there
are no filters is to empty the water and ice from the appliance and keep
running water through it for as long as you can. Then when the water is
clean again and smells OK, do this procedure every 3 months.

alt

Robert asks…

I’ve got a Culligan Water Filter, and am not sure when I should change
the filters?

What’s the best way to know when to change them? Also should I clean out the whole
system or is filter changing enough?

alt

Jack Coburn answers:

From what you say I can’t tell exactly which type you
have. But the safe way is the change them at 6 monthly intervals as a start,
if you find the water quality is getting worse before this, shorten to 4
months and try again.

I’m afraid with this system you do need to clean out the tanks with a proprietary
cleaner. If you don’t the filters will not do the job properly as water
coming in will already have some growth.

More questions and answers about aquasana water filters

alt

Paul asks…

What is your opinion of aquasana water filters?

Like how do you feel the price and quality compare with other brands?

alt

Jack Coburn answers:

Hi Paul, I’ve been using them now for 4 years, I started off with a faucet filter and a shower filter and then installed a whole house system, I think they are excellent quality, and the price is on a level or lower than other similar filters.

alt

Ken asks…

Can anyone tell me more about Aquasana water filters? Any Good?

alt

Jack Coburn answers:

Hi Ken, As I said to Paul in a previous answer, we first used aquasana filters about 4 years ago when we sintalled a faucet and a shower filter. We thought the ywere excellent and after moving to a new house where the water smelled bad we decided to install an aquasana whole house filtration system, we have never regretted it. Great tasting and smelling water and lovely to wash and shower in!

alt

Michael asks…

Are there any stores where I can buy Aquasana Fitlers?

alt

Jack Coburn answers:

Hi Michael, I’m pretty sure they aren’t sold in any stores, but they are sold online and you can go to their site and get a special discount by clicking on the link at the bottom of the page.

alt

Mark asks…

I’ve got an Aquasana-4000 water filter, and can’t get it to fit my tap. What do I need?

Is there anything I can buy online to adapt the tap to the filter?

alt

Jack Coburn answers:

Hi Mike, the AQ-4000 model is a countertop model and will fit most standard taps or faucets. But Aquasana made this model so that it can fit both as a countertop or undersink. So if you can’t make it fit the tap, get in touch with Aquasana and ask themn to send you the converter to enable you to use it under the sink.

alt

Susan asks…

Do you use a jug type water filters for clean water. If so which do you use?

alt

Jack Coburn answers:

Hi Susan, No I don’t use a jug type filter, they are too restrictive in my thinking, I want to be able to drink from any tap in the house and also to use filtyered water for showering so I use a whole house system – by Aquasana of course!

As you probably know we have an aquasana whole house filter system, you can read the story of what made me buy the system by clicking on the following link: Aquasana Water Filter

Some of your questions about water filtration systems

alt

William asks…

How come that some types of water filters are not sold in Canada?

Hey Jack, recently I was Googling for water filtration systems and when the results came up, quite a few said they couldn’t be purchased if you live in Canada

alt

Jack Coburn answers:

It’s all to do with the licensing and taxation system in different countries. But it’s easy to get round, you can buy the system in another country and fit it yourself, you just can’t have it shipped to Canada.

alt

Carol asks…

Can you tell me more about drinking water filters?

I have been looking for some time now at various water filter systems, particularly the under sink reverse osmosis ones. Are they difficult to fit, would you think my partner could fit one, he’s generally OK with DIY. Which ones do you recommend?

alt

Jack Coburn answers:

You won’t find them hard to fit, anyone with a bit of brain could do it! I wouldn’t recommend reverse osmosis, the double filtration systems are best, and rather than an under sink unit, think about spending just a little bit more and get a whole house system, You wont regret it. In the long run it will cost you less and it is much easier to live with, You can’t do better that Aquasana’s whole house system, look down at the bottom of this page for a link to their site.

alt

Steven asks…

Is there a water filtration system which sould protect against biological or chemical warfare?

It sounds a bit far fetched but some of the current films are showing that public water supplies could be infected with these kinds of weapons and they wouldn’t be ablke to filter the stuff out. So is there any water filtration system you can buy which would do it?

alt

Jack Coburn answers:

Hey Steven, stop giving me nightmares! I am not aware of any system which protect against these types of military weapons. There may be one on the market somewhere but I don’t know about it. My feelings are that it would be incredibly expensive! Look, we can’t protect ourselves against every known thing, just get on with life.

Some more questions on the Aquasana Shower Filter

alt

Thomas asks…

Is the Aquasana (AQ-4100) Shower Filter a good quality shower filter?

I’m thinking about buying one of these shower units, is it really a good quality product?

alt

Jack Coburn answers:

Well I can answer this very positively, the AQ-4100 really is the is the best! Talk to anyone who has fitted one and they will confirm what I say. You really can’t do better!

alt

Betty asks…

What’s your honest opinion of Aquasana Shower Filter units?

Have you been happy with this shower filter? My concerns are that I have read recently that most of the US states have started to use chloramine and not chlorine and that this is difficult to remove with a filter. Does it also remove lead?

alt

Jack Coburn answers:

I and all my family used an Aquasana shower filter before I fitted an aquasana whole house filter system to the house. We were very pleased with the unit and was one of the reasons we went on to fit the whole house system.

On the chloramine question I admit I’m not sure about this and will have to find out more, so I’ll get back to you on this. It does however remove lost of the lead in the water.

As I wrote above we now have an aquasana whole house filter system, you can read the story of why I purchased the unit, click on the following link: Aquasana Water Filter

Your questions about the aquasana shower filter

alt

Thomas asks…

A Question on the Aquasana AQ4100 shower filter. What’s the period between cartridge changes?

Aquasana seem to say to change the shower filter cartridge on the six monthly date. I take a shower about three times per week, taking a bath on other days. The rest of the family tend to take a bath and not shower. As the cartridges are quite expensive, could I change them on the 9 month date or would that be a problem?

alt

Jack Coburn answers:

OK it’s not just a matter of how often you take a shower, but other things need to be taken into account such as the water quality, the micron filter and what you are using the filter for. I would think nine months would be OK  but if it is too long you’ll notice a drop in pressure and whether the water becomes hard or soft.

alt

Linda asks…

My Aquasana shower filter is the AQ4100 type. Is it possible to clean the cartridge rather than replace it?

I’m just  trying to think of a way to save money by not having to change the filter cartridges every six months. Is this possible so that I don’t keep having to buy new ones? Would have thjought there must be some way to do this.

alt

Jack Coburn answers:

One idea to try would be to take the cartridge apart then get some of the charcoal filters you can buy at Tropical Fish Retailers and try to use that instead of the usual filters. I don’t know if it would work but it’s worth a try. I’ve never thought the replacement filters were that expensive and to me its worth the cost to make sure the water is clean.

alt

Maria asks…

I would like to ask if anyone is using the Aquasana Shower Filter with a Hand Held Massage unit? And what do you think about it?

alt

Jack Coburn answers:

Yes I have used this tyupe of Shower filter in the past and thought it was excellent, I don’t have it anymore as I installed an aquasana whole house water filtration system. It did work well though without any problems.

As I mentioned above I now use an aquasana whole house filter system, if you want to read the story of what made me purchase one, click on the following link: Aquasana Water Filter

Flouride Contamination in Our Drinking Water Supplies

altFlouride is routinely added to the drinking water supplies in the US by the Public Water Authorities, this is done to reduce tooth decay in children. However, whether we are children or not or whether we want it or not we are being dosed with fluoride.

Read on for some shocking information

As mentioned above, fluoride is deliberately introduced by Public Water Authorities. This chemical is added to 70% of drinking water supplies in the US.

A study carried out by a trusted body – The National Institute of  Environmental Health Sciences – found a link between fluoride and cognitive function in children resulting in lower IQ scores for some of the children. This study looked at 512 children between the ages of eight and thirteen who had all had varied amounts of fluoride consumption.

The children were from two separate locations in China, one location had a high level of fluoride added to the drinking water and the other had low levels of fluoride in the drinking water. The scientists supervising the survey checked that any other factors which could affect the results were taken out of statistics such lack of iodine or and increased exposure to lead.

The results were startling, the number of children who had high IQ levels were higher by more then 300% than the children from the high fluoride location. An even more alarming statistic was that more than 12% of the children from the high fluoride area had an IQ which was low enough to be seen as mentally retarded.

Paul Connett PhD who is the Director of the Flouride Action Network commented as follows: “This association between fluoride and poor cognitive function is the 24th study coming up with the same results” but he thought that this study was particularly strong as it factored in the possible variables. He further commented on the point that the study also showed a correlation between high levels of fluoride in the blood and low IQ levels.

Does this worry you for the health of your family? It worries the hell out me and if hadn’t taken action to fit an Aquasana whole house water filtration system some years ago I certainly would do right now.

Arsenic in St George’s (UT) Drinking Water

aquasana-arsenicSt George Utah has two distinctions – it has the second fastest growing metropolitan area in the USA and a recent drinking water test after the flooding in December showed that the levels of arsenic exceeded the maximum contaminant level.

The City Water Department has increased its monitoring and gave advice to its residents that they did not need to change to bottled water at this point but if they have certain health concerns they should see their Doctor. These health concerns could be people with skin damage, or circulation problems. Drinking water containing arsenic over a prolonged period could cause an increased risk of cancer

The contamination occurred when a large pipeline carrying wholesale water from Washington County was damaged during the December floods in the Virgin River. The large pipeline transfers water to the North West of the city where it is fed into storage tanks holding water from the Snow Canyon wells. This is done to reduce the high levels of arsenic in the Snow Canyon water!! The blending of the two waters lowers the arsenic level to acceptable levels.

Apparently work is underway to repair the damaged pipe and should be completed by February 5th. At the moment the shortfall is being met by water from Santa Clara to ensure the arsenic levels don’t go sky high.

The City of St. George had to continue to meet customer demand without the additional water from WCWCD, so we asked Santa Clara to turn their wells on, and sequentially operated the Snow Canyon wells to keep the arsenic levels as low as possible until the damaged pipeline can be repaired and returned to service.

What’s your view of this? Do you think it’s acceptable for a public water supply to have high levels of arsenic which are only reduced by transporting water hundreds of miles? You have to wonder of there are times between testing that the arsenic levels are much higher than those usually recorded,

Seems all wrong to me, if I lived in the area I would ensure I had a filtered water supply to make sure my family don’t drink water laced with arsenic.

Fortunately I don’t have to worry as I fitted an Aquasana water filter some time ago. Why don’t you go and have a look at the Aquasana site, click on the following link: Aquasana Water Filter

Aquasana Review – From Someone Who Owns One

aquasana-water-filtersI am going to write an Aquasana Review with this article but I feel a word about our drinking water is necessary first – so I am going to start by saying that as the quality of our drinking water gets worse and worse (just check out Google for “drinking water scares”) we need to do something to protect our families from digesting the contaminated stuff.

You can see lots of adverts and hype sites saying this filter or that filter is the best but the only way to find out is to try them all yourself (impractical) or read the review of someone who owns one and has tried others.

Over the years I have lived in various houses and tried different water filters which didn’t impress me, but I only got serious in our present house when we noticed a bad smell from our water (you can read the whole story on the Home page for this site: Aquasana Water Filter – Home Page).

After trying one make of filter I thoroughly researched the products and decided to install the Aquasana Whole House System, I am so glad that I did. Don’t get me wrong here, their tap filters and shower filters are great (I talk about them on this site) but the sheer luxury of having clean, sweet smelling water from all my taps and outlets is fantastic.

What first attracted me to the Aquasana system was the following points:

  • The Aquasana system has been tested for water contamination filtration by the Department of Health for California

  • It has also been tested by the NSF International, The Public Health and Safety Company™, this is a not-for-profit, non-governmental organization, and in many different areas of public health and safety. These guys have been around for 65 years and really know their stuff.

  • It has also been tested by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) who works to improve the safety and health of consumers and the protection of the environment.

  • It has the patented dual filtration system

  • It is very cost effective, the buying costs are about the same as most similar systems but the running costs (and this really matters) are very low –- and come out the lowest in comparison – you change the main filter every three years and the pre-filter once every three months

  • The systems are extremely easy to install and maintain

  • There is really good 24/7 support, they couldn’t be more helpful

  • And finally there is the LIFETIME guarantee! The only one offered in the water filter industry!

There is no doubt in my mind that you will be thoroughly satisfied if you buy any of the Aquasana products but I have to say that the Whole House System has made our lives so much better.

An extra note: I mentioned the NSF International in the points above, in an article on dual filtration they talk about the filters used by Aquasana and state how effective they are when used in a whole house situation to combat all types of contamination.

Go across now to the Aquasana site, it’s a great site for information and you will find exactly what you want. Click on Aquasana Review now.
