British Gas IT apprenticeships


Following on from its successful plumbing apprenticeships British Gas has now launched an IT apprenticeship programme. This is to be a two year programme to develop information systems apprentices. Whilst you may not consider British Gas to be an information technology company the program is extensive covering for different areas: software testing, business engagement, software development and the user experience.

It can be trusted that British Gas is able to run a comprehensive apprenticeship programme. The plumbing apprenticeship scheme has been very successful and British Gas has invested heavily in an apprenticeship training college to give its apprentices hands on experience of the common plumbing challenges met in the daily life of a heating engineer.

This new IT apprenticeship scheme follows the more modern approach to developing an apprenticeship and incorporates elements of formal in-house training, self learning through self-study and the most important learning on the job alongside expert professionals.

For those seeking more detail we can inform that these apprenticeships are targeted towards developing a level II or a level III qualification and will be welcomed by the UK government as an example of how the primary sector can help develop the skills base of the country.

The size of the apprenticeship programme is limited offering up to 30 apprenticeships over the two years of the scheme. It intends to target school leavers who beforehand have had little experience within the IT but do demonstrate a real passion for developing themselves and an affinity towards new technology. This limited size does leave open the allegation that this program has been developed to give a favourable impression to national government rather than provide a major investment in the development of apprentices within the case. British gas doesn’t have a large information technology department and 30 apprenticeships are a small number although we should not be churlish and accept that this is a positive developments and yet one more apprenticeship scheme being developed with the UK.

This new apprenticeship programme has the backing of the U.K.’s I T skills authority, known as e–skills and their website reports that the new apprenticeships will pay a minimum of £100 per week to the new entrants.

In some ways this may be designed to address the criticism that Centrica, the British Gas’s parent company, has received when it was observed that last year they more than doubled their profits whilst appearing to offer little to the economy and the country in times of economic hardship.
