The Rival 3 temp crockpot (low, high and warm) has boiled both cheese dishes to make the cheese curdle). Upon further investigation, my husband discovered that many owners of the Rival crockpot experience the same thing. We are trashing this one and getting a slow cooker with temperature settings.

(More customer reviews)After reading several bad reviews I had decided not to get it - even though, at the price, 10 cup size and strong engine power of 500 watts it seemed the best deal compared to other brands that cost twice as much, or even more.
Anyway, I had written it off until I happened to see a unit on display at Target and was able to touch it and inspect it for myself. It looked perfectly fine to me. The blade seemed thick and sturdy. I checked out how the lid opens and closes etc and couldn't find anything visibly wrong with it. Maybe you have to get used to it, and not use brute force on any parts, but it's not rocket science. So I ended up buying it.
When I tried it out at home I was careful not to force any parts. There are two safety features. The first one is that the lid needs to be locked. The second one is that the cup needs to be locked as well, with the handle aligned in the front (as seen in the product picture above). If it's not in that position it won't start!!! At first mine wouldn't start, and I thought I had bought a lemon - until I figured it out. (Yeah, I don't read product manuals either).
It's been only 2 days, but so far it's been working just fine. I don't know what kind of miracles other "more advanced" machines can perform, but I am happy with what this unit does for me: it chops up stuff!
Is it loud? I can only compare it to my Oster blender. It's less noisy than the blender. After a few uses I became more familiar with working the lid etc. I'll be using it a lot and should it break down anytime soon I guarantee I will back here posting about it. Until then, this one gets two thumbs up. It's a solid product and a bargain at this price.

I usually cook the roasts in a crock pot, but knew that to cook this many would take forever; besides the fact that many of them were too large to fit in a large crock pot. After some research, I found the Waring Pro RO18 and ordered 3 of them. I could put 2 roasts in each roaster. They did the job beautifully. I cooked, shredded, and froze the meat in ziplock bags. Then later used the roasters to serve it with BBQ sauce. I plan to use these roasters for years to come, cooking for my large family and friends. They do get hot on the outside, much like an oven, so be sure to set them on a heat-resistance surface.

(More customer reviews)I originally bought this because of the size: Bigger than my largest slow cooker, but smaller than my original 18 qt Nesco. It's small enough to fit on the countertop but can still turn out two, super moist, 5 lb. stuffed chickens in record time, when using the convection option. Stuffed peppers, sauerkraut and pork, scalloped potatoes and chili turned out wonderfully! The only negative is the hot steam that escapes when lifting the lid. One needs to be careful and make sure to keep arms protected. Also the edge/rim of the roaster gets very hot and can cause a burn if bumped. But that's the case with almost any cooking vessel. All in all I really love the versatility and extra "oven" this product provides. I can't wait to try baking desserts and trying the slow-cooker setting. The Nesco web site ([...] ) also offers a nice variety of additional recipes for this item.

You know how the candle never burns evenly and you always have an inchor two of wax left in the bottom, maybe the wick is gone, or the wick has reached the metal and won't light. Put it on the pad and it warms the wax. I have three. But let me tell you, I did not pay $12.99 for them. Thet are really only $3-4 bucks at a craft store like AC Moore, or Michaels. They work great for wax tarts too, just use a left over jar candle that you may have hanging around.

(More customer reviews)This little unit works astonishingly well -- IF you throw a large towel over the top, to cover an open fresh air area that's just a bit too large IMO. But cover it up with a towel, which you can push aside to get fresh air when you want -- and it gets nice and warm in there, quite quickly, especially if you set it to "high" and "turbo." (The turbo setting is meant to get it to heat up faster, but you can leave it on to get the steam bath hotter.) If you do this, the steambath will be about the temperature of your average gym steambath. I was very pleasantly surprised to discover this.
It does use 800 watts of power, probably more on the turbo setting; electric bill may go up a bit. No feedback on that yet, sorry.
It's small in there, but definitely manageable; it is perhaps about the size of a small apartment shower. This also means its footprint is pretty small. I put a bar stool in it, to be up higher where it's hotter, but you can put any small chair in it, sit on the floor, or stand. It really gets you sweating! (You CAN burn yourself on the steam vent if you don't watch out -- I learned this the first day.) Drink plenty of water -- AND you need to replenish the salt and other electrolytes you lose, as well.
I am dealing with chronic Lyme disease and other tickborne coinfections, and the main symptoms of pain, fatigue and fog-brain are all related to toxicity from either the Lyme itself or the treatments and die-off toxins. Steambaths make a HUGE difference, since the skin is an ideal detoxification route. I notice much better energy, some degree of pain relief (I work too much), and more mental clarity, while also being more relaxed -- The effect of just one steambath can be pretty dramatic if you're dealing with something like Lyme, CFS or Fibromyalgia.
Again, just be careful to replace water AND electrolytes. (Wound up in ER once from overdoing a very hot steambath, drinking loads of water, and getting salt-depleted. Do not let that happen to you.) This steambath at its hottest is an ideal temperature.
Very easy to clean up afterwards. Just wipe it down and carefully dump out the water on the removable floor mat. You can add eucalyptus or other essential oils. It's easy to clean the water pot. I am thrilled with this, and very pleased with how much better I feel after only 3 or 4 steambaths, about 20-30 minutes apiece. Not to keep raving, but I am just very pleasantly surprised and happy with it.
Easy to put together -- No problems at all, except for needing to cover that open area in front, which is easily done (and a towel over the top keeps the heat in better as well.)
I LOVE this thing. One of the best purchases I've made.

(More customer reviews)While reading a recently-recommended cookbook for smaller slow cookers, I shopped offline for what the book recommended -- an oval slow cooker around the 1.5 to 2.0 quart range. Oval (instead of round) because the shape fits more typical ingredients such as chicken breasts.
The picture attached to the 1.5qt product looked pretty oval to me, with a wide front face unlike other small slow-cooker product pictures. The title and description also lacked an indication that it is "round" like all the other small slow-cookers.
Well, the picture is just a camera angle, and this product very, very round.
Since it's here, now, I'm using it and it indeed works, so at least 3 stars for that!

(More customer reviews)Obviously, at this price, these knives are not meant to compete with Henkels or Wusthof types of knives, which are fa superior to these. But they are certainly a contender with the mid- or lower-range offerings from those companies. Many of those knives are stamped, these are forged. There's a good weight in the handle, it can stand up to significant abuse and they keep the edge well. As someone said, they are sharp out of the box, but a quick run against a stone will hone the edges further.
It's true that this product is inaccurately described. It comes with a slicer, not a bread knife. However, I really like the slicer knife - it's a good utility knife for things like slicing tomatoes or soft fruit. Since I knew the description was wrong and that there are a couple of additional slots in the block, I just ordered a bread knife. It's $12 on Amazon. I ordered the scissors, too, for $6 as there's also a slot for them.
I thought this set was a good value. For under $55 plus another $18 for the bread knife and scissors, I got an excellent, versatile and durable set of knives plus a quality block and free shipping -- for a price equal to one knife from some of the big German brand names. No home cook really needs more knives than these unless they do specialized cooking. I bought these for our second home. After using them for a month, I'm totally sold on them.
If you're really upset about the product not including the bread knife, try writing to Amazon and complain after you receive it and they might give you some kind of compensation for the inaccurate description. I did write them to alert them that the product description should be changed.
Oh, and a last point. If you treat knives with a bit of care, they will last a long time. These should never go into the dishwasher. It dulls the blade and damages the handles. Even though they're stainless steel, that doesn't mean they won't rust if they're abused. If you're worried about sanitation, scrub them down and then soak them briefly in warm, soapy water with a tiny splash of bleach. Always dry them promptly before putting them away. Use surfaces such as hardwood like a bamboo or thick plastic s cutting boards, rather than very hard surfaces such as glass. Do yourself a favor and get them sharpened once a year; many hardware stores and cookware stores can do this for a nominal charge or about $1 or $2 a knife. It's worth it.

With the San Francisco strain of Sourdough starter yeast to back it up for authenticity this starter works every time. I recommend you begin by memorizing the two pages of instructions that come with the Starter and follow them explicitly. It is a multi-step process with NO SHORTCUTS. So don't get creative, the instructions are law.
"Goldrush" offers a companion book on Sourdough baking called, "Adventures in Sourdough baking" that will if read a few times make an expert of even the most paranoid novice. The success or failure of Sourdough baking is in the care and feeding of your starter/mother and the instructions or the book go into great detail on how to do exactly this. I (and the book) recommended the purchase of three new (and clean!)two quart containers. They will help you juggle the growing yeast cultures. About the time you think you have killed your "Mother" the book will describe what is going on. This is not one of those pretty things you make. Yeast culturing is part science and part art. So don't panic when it smells like beer, because it is pretty close. You will be successful. Remember to use the refrigerator to store your starter and follow the instructions!
As an aside I have struggled for years to "proof" yeasts and properly raise breads and have failed miserably, Goldrush offers a design for a proof box, that while simple works very well and a tip... use a 7.5 watt bulb instead of a 15.
Short of getting on an airplane, flying to San Francisco and returning with your obligatory souvenir loaf of San Francisco sourdough bread, the Goldrush Sourdough starter is your ticket to sourdough bread baking bliss.
