John Carter
Directed by:
Andrew Stanton
Starring:
Taylor Kitsch,
Lynn
Collins,
Willem Dafoe,
Samantha
Morton
A totally unoriginal epic genre film that somehow manages to be
exciting and entertaining,
John Carter is the biggest
release of the weekend. Directed by the talented Andrew Stanton
(
WALL-E),
Carter stars Taylor Kitsch of
Friday Night Lights in the title role and Lynn Collins as
the Martian princess Dejah Thoris who is drawing some apt
comparisons to Princess Leia in
Return of the Jedi for her
galactic sex appeal. Some critics will pooh-pooh the borrowed plot
elements, but this is a seriously fun popcorn blockbuster.

Salmon Fishing in the Yemen
Directed by:
Lasse Hallstrom
Starring:
Ewan McGregor,
Emily Blunt,
Kristin Scott Thomas,
Amr Waked
Ignore the ridiculous title and trust that Ewan McGregor and Emily
Blunt will carry the film and you'll enjoy this pseudo-romantic
comedy. Tasked with introducing British sport fishing to the Yemeni
desert, fisheries expert Dr. Fred Jones (McGregor) sarcastically
mocks the project as impossible before eventually coming around
thanks to a charming consultant (Blunt) and the pious sheikh
(Waked) whose plan it is. The film loses much of the intelligence
of the source material (it was adapted from the novel of the same
name), but manages to win out because of likable characters and the
unique setting.

Friends with Kids
Directed by:
Jennifer Westfeldt
Starring: Westfeldt,
Adam Scott,
Kristin
Wiig,
Maya Rudolph,
Jon Hamm
An obscenely funny tweener of a romantic comedy, Jennifer
Westfeldt's third feature (
Kissing Jessica Stein, Ira &
Abby) is a well-written and wonderfully acted movie that
should make a leading man out of Adam Scott. Scott's performance
carries the film, but the supporting cast is also great. BFFs Jason
(Scott) and Julie (Westfeldt) see how marriage and children have
ruined their four close friends' relationships and decide to have a
kid themselves as friends and share the responsibility. Westfeldt
manages to shape a smart film out of an idea
Adam
Sandler might have conceived. It works.

Seeking Justice (Limited)
Directed by:
Roger Donaldson
Starring:
Nicholas Cage,
January
Jones,
Guy Pearce,
Jennifer
Carpenter
Cage just continues pumping these movies out.
Seeking
Justice is his latest, about a man who enlists the services of
a vigilante group after his wife is assaulted. He lives to regret
the decision when the group wants a favor in return. Director
Donaldson has a string of so-so credits to his name (
The Bank
Job, The Recruit) and this one isn't going to break the
streak.
See it? Nope.
A Thousand Words
Directed by:
Brian Robbins
Starring:
Eddie Murphy,
Kerry
Washington
The dynamic team of Eddie Murphy and Brian Robbins (
Norbit,
Meet Dave) is back! Looking to add another riveting,
socially-relevant film to the zeitgeist, the pair have reunited
again for
A Thousand Words! Not since Scorsese and De Niro
has there been such a prolific director/actor combination. Yes,
that is sarcasm and yes, this movie will suck. Why does Murphy keep
doing this to us?
See it? NO.
Silent House (Limited)
Directed by:
Chris Kentis,
Laura Lau
Starring:
Elizabeth Olsen,
Adam
Trese
Indie darling Elizabeth Olsen's second feature is the horror film
Silent House. She plays a girl who becomes trapped in the
family lake house and is unable to contact the outside world while
spirits and ghosts attack her psychological well-being. Looking for
a below-average horror movie to watch this Friday night? You got
it.
See it? No.
Footnote (Limited)
Directed by:
Joseph Cedar
Starring:
Shlomo Bar-Aba,
Lior
Ashkenazi,
Aliza Rosen
Nominated for the Best Foreign Language Film at this year's Academy
Awards,
Footnote revolves around a power struggle that
emerges between a father and son who both teach at the Hebrew
University of Jerusalem. Winner of the Best Screenplay Award at the
2011 Cannes Film Festival, the film has been lauded by critics
around the world. It's an interesting look at the University's
Talmud department which breeds eccentricity in its teachers thanks
to unusual traditions and in-house rivalries.
See it? Sure.
Jiro Dreams of Sushi (NYC)
Directed by:
David Gelb
Starring:
Jiro Ono,
Yoshikazu
Ono
A wonderful film about the edible art of sushi. Jiro Ono is the
most revered sushi chef in the world and, more than that, Jiro is a
true artist. This documentary follows the chef and his son,
Yoshikazu, who is attempting to follow in his father's
footsteps.

Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance
Directed by:
Mark Neveldine,
Brian
Taylor
Starring:
Nicholas Cage,
Ciarin
Hinds,
Idris Elba
The second installment of the comic book adaptation comes out
Friday, but don't look for it to be any better than the first.
These films have totally bastardized the amazing comic book by
destroying the dark elements and replacing them with
theater-friendly cheese in order to play to kids and a wider
audience. The biggest mistake was casting
Nicholas
Cage (who I love; he's just too old) to play Johnny Blaze. The
Rider deserved much much better and I pray a real adaptation will
happen down the line. Where's
Alex Proyas
when you need him?
See it? NO.
This Means War
Directed by:
McG
Starring:
Reese Witherspoon,
Chris Pine,
Tom
Hardy,
Chelsea Handler
The plot: two top CIA agents discover they are dating the same
woman and proceed to wage war on one another using their superspy
expertise and savvy. Destined to be fodder for critics,
This
Means War will have a place on date night, but will
disappoint. The attempt to appeal to a young male/female
demographic is so transparent, it's insulting. This is a movie that
was conceived by marketing gurus in some think tank in Reseda.
See it? God no.
Bullhead (Limited)
Directed by:
Michael R. Roskam
Starring:
Matthias Schoenaerts,
Jeroen
Perceval,
Jeanne Dandoy
Nominated in the Best Foreign Language Film category for this
year's Academy Awards,
Bullhead gets a limited run here in
the States. The film follows the story of a young Belgian
cattle farmer who is approached to make an deal with a notorious
beef trader. Hailed by critics around the world for its tense
storyline and Mattias Schoenaerts' poignant unnerving performance,
Bullhead deserves a shot if you are not gunshy about your
theater-going experience. Fans of
Nicholas Winding Refn's
Bronson should take
notice, but this is not the film to take your little sister to.
See it? Yes.
The Secret World of Arrietty
(Limited)
Directed by:
Hiromasa Yonebayashi
Starring:
Bridgit Mendler,
Will Arnett,
Amy
Poehler,
Carol Burnett (voices)
The Clock family are a family of four-inch tall Liliputians who
live in the recesses of a house inhabited by human beings. Arrietty
is the youngest Clock and the family's world changes when she is
discovered by the young boy who lives in the house. Inspired by
The Borrowers,
Arrietty was made by the same
studio which made the best animated film of the past decade:
Spirited Away. It should be an adventure for the entire
family.
See it? Yes.
The Lady (Limited)
Directed by:
Luc Besson
Starring:
Michelle Yeoh,
David
Thewlis
The true story of
Aung San Suu Kyi, the Burmese opposition leader
and Nobel Peace Prize winner who became Burma's (now Myanmar)
national hero. The film follows Suu Kyi's political career and
subsequent house arrest, but also focuses on her relationship with
her husband,
Michael Aris, a writer. Met with mixed reviews from
critics,
The Lady is an unlikely project for
Luc Besson
who is much more well-known for his action prowess (
The Fifth
Element,
Leon). Usually biopics of this nature are
met with some excitement, but
The Lady has generated zero
buzz. The performances should be worth seeing though, as Yeoh and
Thewlis are always great, and I trust Besson as a director.
See it? Sure.
Thin Ice (Limited)
Directed by:
Jill Sprecher
Starring:
Greg Kinnear,
Billy
Crudup,
Alan Arkin,
Lea
Thompson
Marred by controversy after a positive showing at Sundance last
year, Jill Sprecher's film was re-edited by ATO Pictures after they
bought the distribution rights. Originally titled,
The
Convincer,
Thin Ice does not have the director's
stamp of approval but has received generally positive reviews
nevertheless. The black comedy follows a con-man insurance salesman
who concocts a plan to steal a valuable violin from an elderly
client. Judging from the trailer, Crudup's performance is reason
enough to see the film.

A new trailer and poster for Nicholas Cage's latest hellride
Drive Angry 3D are available here. This is another film
which will present itself in 3D, but thankfully this film was
filmed in 3D and is not a conversion (Horror-Movies). The
finished trailer below is a great deal longer than the first

several more seconds of screen time, deservedly so. Also, be
forewarned that the poster seen left has been released by Shock
Till You Drop exclusively and the STYD logo is emblazoned along
the bottom. Check out the clip inside.
*Folks might remember that Cage was also a bat out of hell in
Ghost Rider and he will revisit this character in 2012 as
Ghost Rider: Spirit of Vengeance.

Any time my friends and I get into a discussion of the best
actors currently working today, one of the more controversial
answers that always seems to come up is Nicholas Cage. I can’t
pinpoint exactly why I love Nicholas Cage movies so much; I don’t
think he’s the most versatile actor, and the films are rarely
spectacular. But that does not stop him from being one of my
favorites.
For whatever the reason, here are my personal favorite Nicholas
Cage films in recent memory.
The Rock is probably my favorite film on this list, for its pure
enjoyment factor. Cage was perfect for this movie, as the nerdy
and preoccupied Dr. Stanley Goodspeed. This is probably my
favorite movie to quote with friends.
Another great Nicholas Cage film came out recently to limited
release. That movie was none other than Bad Lieutenant: Port Of
Call, New Orleans. Sure, it’s a wordy title, but don’t let that
stop you from seeing this dark film in which Cage plays one of
the most corrupt cops I’ve ever seen.
Another movie of his I feel the need to mention is National
Treasure. While I do not love the franchise, you cannot question
its box office success. I would be highly surprised if we do not
see at least one more film from this franchise.
I would be remiss to make a list of Nicholas Cage films without
mentioning Con Air. In Con Air, he plays Cameron Poe, a retired
marine who is imprisoned for an act of self defense and has to
get through John Malkovich of all people, before he can get home
to see his daughter for the first time.
One film that I certainly have to mention on this list is the
movie that won Nicholas Cage an Academy Award for Best Actor in a
Leading Role, and that film was none other than Leaving Las
Vegas. This film is categorized as drama/romance, but spans
beyond its genre.
Hopefully there are one or more films on this list from this
incredibly prolific actor that you have yet to see.

Nicholas Cage in Drive Angry 3D
Director Patrick Lussier (
My Bloody Valentine) has
finished shooting
Drive Angry 3D and the film has had a
San Diego Comic Con appearance. At the conference a clip for the
film was released and the premise for the film sounds good, as an
ex-con (Nicholas Cage) returns from hell to the living in order
to save his grandfather. Damn, is Cage that old to playing these
parts already? The film also stars William Fichtner ("Prison
Break"), Amber Heard (
And Soon the Darkness), Billy Burke
(
New Moon), and David Morse (
Disturbia). Watch the
short clip below and check out a second still with Heard also
inside.

And it looks a little something like this.
If you’ve ever wanted to hear Jay Baruchel whine and pretend to
be a leading man for about two hours, then you should watch The
Sorcerer’s Apprentice, being released this weekend. The movie
cost 120 million dollars to make and has some of the biggest
names in Disney entertainment and cocaine-tray styled
producing behind it. But predictions so far have been dim, and
the movie’s opened against what happens to be the biggest
critical darling of all time. Inception. And Nicholas
Cage was promoting Nicholas Cage the only way he knows how to…
By going on David
Letterman and telling stories about how he did mushrooms with
his cat. That sentence is everything that I have ever thought
about Nicholas Cage. That he sits around with his long hair,
reading comic books and taking mushrooms and talking to his cat.
And then he thinks it’s a good idea to go on late-night talk
shows and promote that to people.
I love everything about Nicholas Cage. That he’ll promote crazy
things overseas, sells houses that are designed like bordellos,
and collects dinosaur heads. Somehow he’s morphed into
everyone’s favorite actor, one who can shoot little girls and
chew scenes with John Travolta.
Just enjoy the commercial.

Will we see the roads on fire and damage to public property
again?
Just kidding guys…,but yes,we will definitely see these actions
on screen.
Nicholas Cage has confirmed that there will be the sequel of
‘Ghost Rider’.
“There’s gonna be a new one,” Cage said to Ferguson, right after
he was presented with a model of a flaming skull, “I just made
the deal today.”
Cage reportedly confirmed that that “Crank” collaborators Mark
Neveldine and Brian Taylor will helm the sequel.
That’s good news, as I thought original “Ghost Rider” director
Mark Steven Johnson (“Daredevil”) watered down a cool concept,
which of course was adapted from the long-running Marvel Comics
series.
So Cage will be back on the “Ghost Rider” motorcycle. Who will he
fight? When will we see it? Stay tuned for more details.

more updates on this news,we will keep you guys posted. Actor
