(More customer reviews)I was excited when I found out that Generac got back into the portable generator business. They sold their portable generator line to Briggs and Stratton a few years ago but they are back to producing portable generators again. I always liked the Generac portables. They were quality products at reasonable prices. I've owned a Generac 4000EXL for 12 years. It is a great little generator and the only one I knew of at the time with an OHVI engine. My experience with the 4000EXL is the reason I purchased the XP8000E.
I ordered my XP8000E over the Internet. Due to the bad ice storm in the Northeast, none of the local dealers had them in stock. I paid $50 less than Lowe's sells it for and that included free liftgate delivery, which was nice since this unit weighs 200lb. In retrospect, the ability to return it to Lowe's would have been worth the extra $50.
The XP8000E was well packed. The packaging is ingenious and if you follow the instructions, removal is really easy. On the down side, following the instructions means you are cutting all four corners of the box so if you have to return it, you have no box. The generator is mounted on top of a heavy cardboard support. It suspends the generator just enough so you can slip the wheels on without having to lift it at all. Once the wheels are on, the generator rolls easily out of the now flattened box. The only thing I didn't like about the old red Generac generators is that the wheels were under the motor end and the handles were on the alternator end. The alternator is the heavier side of a generator so you were lifting the heavy alternator end whenever you moved it around. I was pleased to see that the new models are designed so that the weight is over the wheels rather than the handles. This makes moving the XP8000E almost as easy as the 4000EXL, even though it weighs twice as much.
The next step was to fill the generator with oil. The XP8000E Operator manual specified 3 different oil viscosities depending on ambient temperature. There was no oil that could be used for all temperature ranges. This is a nuisance because in New England, temperatures can vary widely and I didn't want to have to change the oil 4 times per year (for each season). Conversely, the engine manual for this generator said 5W-30 full synthetic oil could be used from -20°F to over 100°F. Since this conflicted with the operator manual, I called Generac for clarification. They told me 5W-30 synthetic could be used at any temperature and that is what they use at the factory on their test generators. I picked up some MobilOne 5W-30 and proceeded. The first thing I noticed when filling the generator with oil is that the lower support (a U channel) is upside down from how it was on my old 4000EXL. The U is facing up. The support is also directly below the oil fill, the oil drain and the oil filter. What this means is that it will be nearly impossible to change the oil without getting some in the channel. With the old models, it would just run off and providing you had a strategically placed pan underneath, there would be no mess. With the new design, the channel fills with oil. Since the engine is directly over it, you can't get access to clean the channel so the oil will slowly drip out over the next few days. I'm not sure what the engineers at Generac were thinking but this is a very bad design. Next I gassed up the generator. When I removed the gas cap, I discovered there was a mesh filter cup in the fill tube. This interesting way of filtering the gas makes it difficult and slow filling the generator. The filter cup prevents you from inserting the fill nozzle of the gas can more than 2 inches into the opening. The filter also restricts the flow so the combination makes filling the generator very slow. Pour too quickly and you will spill gasoline everywhere. Considering this generator has a 9 gallon gas tank, this is a significant inconvenience and another design flaw.
I fired up the generator after filling it with oil and gas. It started right up but I noticed a few more design flaws. Generac went to great lengths to put all the controls on one panel. This makes controlling the generator easy because you don't have to walk around the generator to reach the various controls. Unfortunately, this arrangement is poorly implemented. The choke, which was easy and smooth to operate on the older models is now controlled by a cable. The choke positions are vague at best. Also, if you are not very gentle with the choke lever, you will pull it out too far and then it jams. If you don't pull it out far enough however, the generator won't start. It is near impossible to put the generator in the full choke position without jamming it. Then you must wiggle the lever to get it aligned so you can push it back into its socket. Also, the on/off switch and start button, which were separate on the older designs are combined into a single rocker switch on this model. Left is off, center is on and right starts the generator. It takes very little pressure to move the switch to any of the 3 positions. I could easily see someone inadvertently pressing start when trying to turn off the generator, thus grinding the starter mechanism. You have been warned so be careful! Last, the fuel shutoff valve is extended through the front panel via a plastic knob/shaft assembly. It is difficult to turn and I'm betting the plastic shaft will crack from stress over time. So that is at least two and possibly three more design flaws.
That said, as long as you get the choke to the proper position, the generator starts easily and it is as quiet as the 4000EXL - Pretty impressive considering the engine is twice the size. Next I checked the voltage and frequency. The frequency was 63.5 Hz with no load, which is excessively high. Most motors will not like this. My well pump specifically states that the frequency must be no more than plus or minus 1 Hz. Frequency in a generator is directly related to engine speed. Higher engine speed equals higher frequency. I applied a 6000W load to the generator and adjusted the engine speed to obtain a frequency to 60Hz. I called a friend who also bought this model and told him what I found. He checked his generator and also found the frequency to be 63.5 Hz. In conversation, he mentioned that his generator was running poorly out of the box. I told him to check to see that the foam element was oiled. If not, this can cause the generator to run lean. When he examined the filter, he found the foam element was not installed properly and was actually folded in half so it wasn't completely covering the paper element. He suggested I check mine, since he found it difficult to install properly due to the placement of the filter housing. I checked mine and sure enough, mine was folded over too. So far, I was not too impressed with the quality control. I ran the generator for about a half hour with various loads. Thankfully, it ran great without flinching.
I shut down the generator and stored it in the garage. A few days later, I went into the garage and noticed a strong gasoline odor. Since the generator was the only new addition, I went over to see if that was the source. It was. I examined the unit and found gas was leaking near the gas shutoff valve. I checked the tightness of the hose clamp on the gas line. It was properly tightened. Closer examination revealed the gas was coming from the valve body. There are two screws on the face of the valve. I thought perhaps they may be loose. I took a small Phillips screwdriver to snug them up. One of the screws was very loose and turned freely. It had obviously been stripped during assembly. I'm disappointed at this point but no big deal. It looks easy to replace so I'll just email Generac on Monday for a replacement part. Hopefully we won't have a storm before then.
I got a reply Monday with the names of 2 service dealers in my area. I called Generac because transporting a 200 lb generator to a dealer 30 minutes away would be a major pain in the back. Plus, I don't have a pickup and the generator was leaking gas. I had drained the tank over the weekend but I was unable to get out every last drop, so a 30 minute drive with gas leaking in my SUV was not an option. I explained this to the rep on the phone. She told me I could not replace the part myself because that would void the warranty. Excuse me? The manual tells me I must adjust the valve clearance after the first 25 hours of use and every 100 hours after that. I am qualified to adjust valve clearance but I can't replace a simple valve? Please!!! I pressed the issue with the customer service rep. She put me on hold. When she came back on the line, she suggested that I put a towel under the generator to catch the gas and bring it to a dealer for repair. My brain's internal filtering system shut down at this point as I asked her, "You expect me to drive 30 minutes with a generator leaking gas onto a towel in my car?" I was persistent and finally she agreed to order me a part. She questioned me about exactly what part I needed and I told her the fuel shutoff valve that screws into the gas tank. She put the order in and told me I'd have it the next day. I was happy and thanked her. The next day, nothing arrived. I got the part 2 days later. Not great but still not bad. I opened the box and prepared to install the part but it was the wrong one. She sent me the valve from the GP8000 instead of the one for the XP8000E. It would not work in my generator. First, my co-workers were skeptical about an electric mower, but I've had the experience in the past.
Here are some of the benefits:
- you can look under your mower by flipping it over and not worry about gaz or oil leaks.
- grass is cut from end to end of a yard easier with the flip handle than those that don't. (that should include all gaz mowers) Instead of closing in on the middle of your lawn, you start on one end and finish at the other end. (I like it)
- this mower doesn't retain anything underneath. I didn't know that some mowers would do that. From my previous experiences, you had to clean up the mower every couple of use.
- height adjustment is super simple.
- electronic brake. If you release the power (bar!), the blade stops in a micro second. This is great for safety.
- no smells of any sort (except first few minutes being a new electrical product)
I wouldn't trade it, and my yard is not small.

(More customer reviews)This is a homeowner's dream. I've been looking at the Milwaukee, DeWalt, etc. cordless combos for years but I could not justify the price for my week-end warrior needs. This kit gave me reasonably well-made and well-powered tools at a price I could afford. My son and I built a real tree-house (8x10, 10 ft. high!) over the Thanksgiving using these tools with no problems. The tools all performed and held up well through that 40 hour project. I was glad to have the cordless feature up in those trees 200 feet from the nearest electric outlet. You really do need to cycle the batteries a few times before you get the max life out of them, but the one hour charger does exactly that. I'm also a fairly slow worker(nobody's paying me), so that I rarely needed a new battery before the charging one was ready and if I did, that was a good time for a break (like I said, nobody's paying me for this work). I can see where a professional would need more run-time.
If I were using these tools everyday, I'd shell out for the professional brands, but for my needs they are just right for the price.

The quiet mode is effective for light jobs and almost silent. The look is great- very high end. It was very tough to install so if you have a contractor that can do it then go that way. Also, the elliptical curve across the front takes some getting used to. I hit my head on it a few times before learning the behaviour necessary to avoid doing that.

The installation was straight forward, I would have given it 5 stars but they do not give you a template to layout the exhaust hole and attachment bolts so it took me awhile to measure and mark it out. The unit really has powerfull motors and the lighting is pretty good. I would recommend this hood to anyone that does alot of cooking and needs a powerful hood; this baby does the job.

I have pulled its last splinter out of my hand. :-) I'm very glad I followed the other advice to only get "as much ladder as you need." I almost bought the 22-foot Little Giant, which would have been way too much ladder for me. This 5-to-8 foot model is perfect for anywhere I need to reach inside the house or the first level gutters outside.
The ladder is a little heavier than I expected, but easy to manage with my small build (5'5", 135lbs). It adjusts much easier than I expected, and is a very sturdy ladder. I love that you can set the adjustable leg to be straight up and down. That lets you climb right up close against a wall -- no excessive reaching or struggling to position the ladder just right.
Best of all -- FINALLY! -- a choice to buy something "Made in the USA". As rare as that is these days, it was refreshing.
A great, high quality ladder - I highly recommend it.

(More customer reviews)Although reviews can provide you with a good overview of what's out there, I still like to actually see (and touch) the tools before buying them. So I went down to the local store and checked out their offerings. I was attracted to the Hitachi C10FCH miter saw because of the quality of construction, the ergonomics, the physical size and the price (ordered according to importance).
Quality of construction: nicely machined table, substantial hinge, smooth movement of miter and bevel adjustments.
Ergonomics: horizontal handle with conveniently located on/off switch (pistol grip only makes sense on sliding miter saws). A laser helps with aim.
Physical size: feels light and compact compared to other models in the same class.
Price: is reasonable since the saw comes with an integrated laser.
Performance: Excellent cuts (with the right blade)! With the help of the laser, I routinely cut base board within 1mm (=0.04 inch). Tool feels precise, solid and is easy to use.
Drawbacks that pursuaded me to give only four stars:
Although the price is reasonable, Hitachi was skimping on features: Table extensions are optional and the included blade is very coarse (good enough for 2x4s but you need to invest another $50 for a good blade that does moldings, base board, etc.), no dual compound capability.
Although the laser is extremely (!) useful, ideally one would like to have a dual laser calibrated to either edge of the cut. I find myself recalibrating the laser from one edge to the other edge a lot.
One last thing, the saw dust bag setup is not very efficient. It catches maybe 50%, probably less.

(More customer reviews)I have a very modern work desk and this fits right in. Throws off a very bright light typical of LEDs - not a warmer light you may want for home use. Well made and functional with the many positions you can direct the beam. It IS a beam, by the way - somewhat of a spotlight but the sides give off a glow. Because of the primary beam I use this for close work and do not have it on at all times. The dimmer is very handy, though, and allows me to keep it on low when I'm not working. The small base takes up little of my desk space which is appreciated. Why 4 stars and not 5? It simply is overpriced. It's not THAT high quality an item and, hey, it's a desk lamp no better than many others for sale at 80% less. So why did I buy it? I like how it looks and it fits in my work environment. In other words the art value sold me. You'll have to decide if the price works for you. In summary - nicely made, functional and pretty but pricey.

I bought this product because I read such glowing reviews on the HD website and on other websites that talked about different brands of tubular skylights.
It took 3 attempts to get an undamaged skylight delivered from ODL. I needed the 14" which Home Depot did not have in stock so I ordered online from Home Depot. The product comes directly from the manufacturer however. Before installing the skylight I blamed FedEx for rough treatment and the flimsiness of the box it comes in for the damage. After installing the skylight I see now that it is extremely easy to bend and damage just by handling it and trying to adjust the angle.
My husband and I are very experienced do-it-yourselfers. There are few remodeling projects that we have not tackled. I thought this would be a really easy project based on the video and what I read from other's who had installed it. It probably is fairly easy if you have a straight shot from the hole in the ceiling of the room through the attic to the hole in the roof. We unfortunately did not have this situation. We required 2-48" extensions. Because of having to deal with an awkward angle and the extension tubes this project took us the better part of a day - approximately 7 hours.
The installation in the ceiling is a snap. The roof was pretty straight forward. It was working with the tubes that was a hassle.
My biggest complaint is that the angled parts of the tube do not slide easily and get bent up as you try to adjust them to the angle you need. In general all the tubes bend and dent easily causing them to be difficult to seal when you attach them together.
While trying to adjust the angled tube from the roof it came apart and no matter how hard we tried we were not able to get it back together and just had to tape it which did not give a good seal.
I was so excited to get the skylight installed and bring light into my dark kitchen. The end result was disappointing. I'm not sure why, but the skylight does not bring much light in and certainly not the amount as was advertised even on a clear, sunny day. It could be because of all the difficulty we had with the installation and the bent up tubes.
If you plan to buy this product I recommend only buying directly from the HD store. That way you can return it if you have the kind of trouble we did - damaged when you open the box and parts breaking during installation.

This is a great looking unit with a lot of nice features. We may just have gotten a bad one, so take this for what it is worth, but we have been pretty frustrated. The unit keeps showing Code 1 and refuses to work. I called Electrolux Customer Service, who I must say were honest and stated that their engineers had misdesigned the computer board and they were having a lot of problems. Said they had redesigned the board and would get one right to us. About four days later a repairman changed the board out. Only problem, it is still showing Code 1--a leak in the tub. So we have a brand new $1300 dishwasher that a contract repairman must completely take apart to fix a seal in the unit. Not what I would expect for a high-end product. Wish we had gone with the Bosch.
Want to amend my review a little, and raise this to four stars. The above unit was defective. Lets face it, no company is perfect and everyone produces a lemon every once and a while. I must say that Electrolux customer service was great to deal with. After I told them that the panel replacement had not fixed the issue, they immediately stated they would replace the entire unit. We have the new unit in and it is a very nice dishwasher. Its quiet, does a good job, and has a lot of room inside. My only complaint would be that if your dishwasher is to the left of your sink, sometimes you will accidentally hit the touch panel on top of the door. Not a big issue though. We are happy with the unit, so I take back my words about preferring the Bosch.
Well, I will go down to 1 star. Now, almost two years later, and all of the above, guess what we got with the new unit--Code 1--a leak in the tub, only this time it was also leaking water on the floor. I called customer service, but they told me that it was past its warranty, so I would have to fix it on my dime. After I complained about the trouble we have had with the unit, they agreed to send a parts kit and a repairman, but stated this would be the last time they would cover anything. If they hadn't agreed parts and labor would have been $350 on a unit less than two years old. Got the parts kit quickly, and the repairman changed out the parts--including one of the pumps which his tests determined was also failing--it had become really loud. It is now working, although I have no idea how long it will be before the next problem. At the next problem, I'm not calling Electrolux, I'm just throwing this dishwasher out and buying a Bosch. I would never buy this dishwasher again, nor frankly would I buy any additional Electrolux appliances. My family members have $500 dishwashers which have lasted far longer and frankly clean the dishes better than this appliance. This is not an Electrolux of European quality, its a Frigidaire with Electrolux stamped on the outside. Electrolux is doing itself some serious damage in the US market with appliances like this. We also have their gas range, which I have also rated poorly, because of some easily avoidable poor design features. Avoid this dishwasher!!
December 2010 :) The happy face is because sometimes in life you just have to laugh!!! So after the last fix it has lasted 8 months. Tonight Error Code 1. I'm staying true to my last comment, its going in the garbage and I will buy a Bosch tomorrow. This is clearly a case of a manufacturer foisting a defective product on the public. I'm going to review the California Lemon Law and possibly discuss with an attorney. This is a $1300 appliance!!! Quite simply, unbelievable!!!

(More customer reviews)We chose this for our media room because of its modern styling (and
my wife wanted to add an overhead light to the room.) The fan and remote
operate perfectly, no wobble, smooth, quiet, the best. The light is another matter. It's one tiny 100w halogen bulb in a frosted glass dish.
The light output is meager at best, they should have put two bulbs
in there for it to have any real usefulness. (see customer images)
The light assembly is also not up to Casablanca's usual high standard.
The globe/dish mounts into a cheesy stamped aluminum pan with a bayonet
type mount ( push in and twist to lock ) My assembly must have been on
the extremes of manufacturing size tolerances (large diameter globe,
small diameter aluminum pan) because it wouldn't rotate and lock all the
way. When I tried to unlock it, the entire lamp pan assembly started
turning instead of just the globe.
It's jammed in there, half locked, so I'm not worried about it falling out, but when the lamp finally blows I'll have to remove the entire fan
assembly from its mount in the ceiling and take it to the service center
(which thankfully is in the next town) and pay to have them repair it.
I contacted customer service, and this isn't covered under the warranty. So if you really need a room light with your fan, buy a more traditional Casablanca design like the Panama II 6645A.

(More customer reviews)My wife bought us this lamp to finally replace the hideous dorm-room classic standing halogen lamp that I had bought at Staples back in my bachelor days. That lamp was perfectly functional, and definitely provided a good deal of light, but we're grown-ups now, and it was time to let it go. This lamp is beautifully made, and looks great in our living room. We both tend to be fairly conservative in terms of our taste in decor, and we were worried that our room might look like some tie-dyed psychedelic wonderland once the lamp was turned on, but our fears turned out to be completely baseless. We put three CFL bulbs in it (being the yuppie, tree-hugging hippies that we are) and the lamp produces a soft, warm, pleasing light, and it looks gorgeous as a piece of furniture, even when it's turned off.
One thing to be aware of, is that this lamp doesn't provide a whole lot of illumination, so if your goal is to flood a room with brilliant light, this isn't the lamp for you.
