(More customer reviews)I recently
purchased this system when it's price was sub $300 and I'm glad I
didn't pay any more for it.
The system kicks out a MAJOR PUNCH in the sound department, with
deep bass that will rumble the room thanks to it's HUGE subwoofer.
It's as big as a PC tower case and blasts!
Sadly, you have to have it blast if you want to hear anything.
There are few controls for the sound levels and trying to listen as
low volumes was worse audio quality than listening to the TV with
it's built in speakers.
The system is either too quiet to hear anything but voices, or too
loud to hear anything other than boom.
Also, when in stereo mode, the back speakers shut off. There is one
option that will do stereo with them on (Matrix Mode) but it tries
to separate sounds and ends up with the speakers just making some
noises sometimes and is a bit disconcerting.
The upconverting DVD player looks pretty poor on a high def
television. There also is no difference with upscale from 480p to
1080i, it's just as blocky. If you've not seen a better upscaler
(as found in the PS3 for example) then it might look okay, albeit
blocky, but if you have seen a better one you won't be able to
watch DVD's on your HDTV with this without feeling as if you're
missing something.
Lastly... the fan. After a while a fan inside the receiver will
kick in. This thing is LOUD. That shouldn't happen on a sound
system - having something that makes listening to things worse.
Overall, I'm very dissapointed in this product and suggest you look
elsewhere for a home theater system. I'm considering returning this
item and wished I'd read a review like this first, so I'd know to
stay away.

(More customer reviews)I just got one of
these babies. I am an IT professional and have the PC equipment for
burning DVDs and capturing video, but I still felt that I wanted
this unit.
The features that appealed to me were:
- 16x write speed
- Sony brand name
- DV input
- Dual Layer burning support
- Stand-alone mode (no PC needed)
I have this hooked up to my home theater. I have an HD setup and a
Motorola 6412 Hi-Def DVR. So far I have been able to make excellent
copies of kid's shows from Nick and Cartoon Network, etc, in the
SLP format (6 hour record time). Those are GREAT for long trips
with the portable DVD player.
I have also made excellent DVDs of my home movies shot with our
Sony HC30 digital video camcorder. That's where the DV firewire
(IEEE-1394) input comes in handy. You will have to buy a firewire
cable if you don't already have one. I needed the 4 to 4 cable that
has the mini d-shaped connectors on each end and I got that cheap
from my favorite online auction site.
Now if you want to copy old VHS tapes that you have, or make
backups of DVR'ed material then you may be out of luck as this unit
does do a good job of honoring Macrovision copy protection when it
detects it. I have been told there are "digital video stabilizer"
like the "SIMA CT-2" (do a Google search) that will clean up the
video signal and allow backup of your legally owned and obtained
materials, so all is not lost in that area should you want to make
backups of your old VHS tapes or make a backup of the Sopranos from
your DVR.
Lastly, there are three different inputs: RCA composite video/audio
(yellow, red, white plugs), S-Video and DV (firewire). I haven't
tried S-Video, only the firewire and composite. If you plan to hook
this up to a DVR, like the Mot 6412, getting audio into the device
can be a challenge because the Mot 6412 seems to only have optical
audio out and this device has no optical audio input. If you have a
receiver then you can probably run the audio from one of your
outputs (VCR, or TAPE) to the Sony unit, and the video directly
from the 6412 to the Sony. That's what I did, and other than some
lower than expected but acceptable volume levels on the digital
channels all was fine.
Lastly, use good quality media. Don't go cheap. Use Memorex or
better yet Sony DVDs. I use the DVD-R format because that's what my
stand-alone player supports. When setting up the unit plan on
burning and finalizing several DVDs each with material a few
minutes long until you get all the cabling and quality settings
right and the way you want them, especially if hooking up to a
DVR.
I found the preview LCD to be very helpful, but you will have to
have the unit close to you and not deep on a shelf or a rack to see
it as the angle of viewing requires you almost be over top of the
LCD to view it...the next model should have a pop-up tilt screen,
IMHO.
Initialization and finalization of a DVD doesn't take that long.
The unit is a little loud, but not too much so, and does throw some
heat when burning. I suggest putting it in a well-ventilated area.
I have mine on top of my home theater rack instead of inside it.
It's small footprint and attractive finish, coupled with the fact
that I will use this frequently for dubbing from my camcorder made
that placement make sense for me.
I hope this review was helpful.

(More customer reviews)Pros
* Has the latest HD Decoders for Dolby TrueHD and DTS Master Audio
(lossless audio for bluray movies).
* HDMI passes through sound, therefore no need for extra audio
cables (unlike the HT-S5200)
* Sound gets very loud, but maintains clarity. Bass response, tonal
balance, dynamic range are very good.
* Several listening modes that enhance your experience (Virualize
stereo sound into surround sound, i.e. DTS Neo:6)
* IPOD dock included. This is normally a seperate item to purchase.
Get more use out of your IPOD.
* Quality product all around, solidly built. Sleek piano black
finish for the speakers. Receiver, clean and simple. Not too large
or heavy either, unlike past Onkyo HTIBs.
* Affordable! (Amazon had the cheapest price, plus free shipping,
plus no tax!)
Cons
* Does not upconvert sigals to 1080P. Therefore, if your Nintendo
Wii displays 480P, then this receive will not upconvert and you
will still see 480P.
* Does not convert analog signal to digital. Basically, does not
convert component signal to HDMI. Therefore, if you have a
component connection like an old DVD player, you will need to
install component out to the TV as well. You cannot connect all
connections to this reciever, and have them output through the
HDMI. No conversion between signal types. Component in/Compononet
out, HDMI in/HDMI out, Composite in/Composite out.
* Remote control is average at best, which is to be expected.
Currently working with Onkyo support to use remote as universal
remote for all components. I just dont want to invest in an
expensive universal remote :-)
Additions
* Bought my own speaker wire and speaker stands from [...]. Very
cheap, good quality products.
* Ran speakerwire under carpet and baseboards. Suprisingly, very
clean, although its not the most ideal.
Overall, I am very pleased with this purchase. I recommend this to
everyone is looking to install a quality HTIB, that sounds as good
as more expensive custom systems. Of course, you can get better
sound, but you maybe paying three to four times more. Therefore,
for the price and features, you are getting a great value. Five
stars.

(More customer reviews)I never thought
that I'd be able to afford speakers that had a retail cost of
$2,500 a pair or $1,250 for each. That time finally came when I
decided to replace my Polk setup. I ended up purchasing the Klipsch
XF-48 towers that I use as my left and right speakers along with
the matching XL-23 LCR center channel and two additional XL-23
LCR's as the surrounds on the XFS matching stands. I must say that
they are absolutely incredible, even being used as stereo sound.
They have a large range for frequency response, and handle the
highs, mids, and lows extremely well. The highs aren't too bright
and overall the speakers give out a warm sound that I love.
The XF-48 towers have a line-level input (digital coax cable) as
well as a speaker-level input (speaker wire). Not many speakers
give you this option but it's available on the XF-48's because each
speaker has a built in 110-watt amplifier. I used the speaker-level
input for about a week but ended up using the line-level input
since I thought it sounded better and it also allowed for my
receiver to not waste it's power on these speakers since they are
already amplified.
Sound during music was great and even sounded better with movies.
The design and looks of the speakers also helped in making my
decision. They are very classy looking and don't take up as large
of a space as many other floor standing speakers. I also like the
blue light that glows on them. The only bad thing I can say about
this speaker is that each speaker needs to be plugged into an
outlet since they have a built in amplifier. If you know a store
that you can demo these, please take a listen. I'm not sure what
else I can say other than order these now. You'll be happy with
your purchase, I know I am.

Klipsch XF48 Gloss Black Icon X Series 2-Way
floorstanding speaker
When designing the fully active XF-48 floorstander, our engineers
refused to hold back. The speaker intelligently employs dual
high-output fiberglass cone woofers with powerful neodymium motor
structures and two passive radiators to unleash the kind of bass
you hear and feel. But what makes this flat-panel speaker
remarkably superior is an all-new, patent-pending Tractrix(R)
Horn-loaded tweeter with XT(TM) technology. For over 60 years,
horns have been the driving force behind our stunningly precise
sound, and this latest design moves us farther ahead by allowing
the slender XF-48 to deliver an extremely smooth response with
constant directivity. You'll discover the XF-48's performance has
but one rival: style. Its beautifully crafted aluminum extruded
enclosure, featuring an anodized black-grain finish and high-gloss
black accents, is the direct result of our engineers' quest for
perfect balance. The entire Icon Series is performance art at its
best, capturing the spirit of our past and pushing us into the
future. It is a brilliant representation of how our products have
evolved and remained desirable over time. After just one listen,

(More customer reviews)I've seen the Wave
Radio compared to products from Kloss,
Cambridge Sound Works, Sony, etc. Typical reviews put
the Wave Radio ahead in styling and behind in sound quality
and price. That matches up with our experience.
However, in the bedroom, styling is important. I look at
our clock radio every morning and night, and if it looks like a
transformer robot or a leftover from a karaoke bar, it isn't
worth the "good deal". The Bose is one of only a few I've seen
that is understated, with elegant lines and no chrome. Is
styling
worth $500? No. But I won't buy an ugly box, even for $20.
In terms of sound quality, this is a Bose: no highs, no lows.
Well, it does have lows, but is quite boomy. This is reduced
by the "aux" stand that Bose is giving away with the radio.
The highs are muted. There are no tone controls. You can turn
it up loud enough to hear clearly down the hall, and the sound
is still OK (in fact, pretty good). Not quite what Bose would
have you believe, but good. Worth $500? No, but better than
most
$200+ "executive" clock radios, few of which are nice looking,
or have the true clock-radio features. Nowhere near as good
as a $500 bookshelf stereo, but of course the stereo simply
isn't
a clock radio at all.
Features are well-done compared to a $40 GE or Sony
clock radio: two alarms, radio/cd/alarm wakeup, ramped alarm
volume, auto-dimmer, battery backup, readable (but not
obnoxious) display, remote control. No TV sound or weather
radio. Controls are intuituve. Worth $500? No, but the sound
is fantastic compared to most clock radios.
Overall, it is a darn expensive clock radio. It is hard to
justify the price, but there's nothing exactly like it in
the market (the clone CSW 740 comes close, but, in my opinion,
is
significantly uglier, and the older CSW 88 has a lot of harsh
reviews concerning reliability and support). If you're looking
for the combination of a good clock radio with very good sound
and understated lines, this is about all there is so far.

(More customer reviews)I purchased this
monitor to go with my MacPro 15" laptop. Because of all the great
Amazon reviews, I was all ready to buy a Samsung for about $100
more, but when I saw how crisp and clear my boss's HP display was I
changed my mind and purchased the HP L2208w. I love it! The color
is a little cooler than my laptop display but it's totally
adjustable through the Monitor>Color>Calibration>Advanced
control panel. The display is crisp with full color and saturation
ranges and nice deep blacks for photograph editing. It took about 3
minutes to get it out of the box, plugged in and in use. At first I
used it in duel monitor mode with my laptop but now, most of the
time I just leave my laptop closed and use the HP as my sole
monitor. It coordinates nicely with my laptop and Apple keyboard
too. The only thing I don't like about it is the adjustment
controls. I can't actually see any labels or icons on them to give
a clue what does what, though I think they are there, they're so
faint I can't see them. That said, there are an ABUNDANCE of
adjustments you can make, everything you can thing of, and if you
click around enough, you'll eventually get it exactly where you
want it. It's a really great monitor at a fantastic price and I
couldn't be happier with it.

(More customer reviews)I suddenly found
myself in need of a monitor with more inputs so I purchased this
one. The HDMI input is particularly well done: there's a standard
headphone jack on the left edge (next to the two USB ports) for
listening to HDMI audio. I tested this with my AT&T U-verse
DVR's HDMI output successfully. I imagine that the HDMI audio
feature of the new ATI 2xxx-series video cards will work too. LG
includes a HDMI-to-DVI monitor cable and a VGA cable. Should you
need a HDMI-to-HDMI cable you'll have to purchase it separately. I
bought a Monoprice 4-port HDMI switch and assorted cables to let me
share this monitor between my DVR and PCs, an arrangement that
works reasonably well. I have the component input hooked up to the
DVR as well so I can watch TV using the monitor's PiP feature,
though I've yet to use that much.
There are two tweaks that you may need to make. The default colors
were way too dark from my PC, which I corrected by setting Picture
| CSM to sRGB. That let me turn down brightness to a much more
comfortable level. To view HDTV video without the picture being
stretched vertically, set Screen | ARC to 1:1 instead of Full.
I'm very happy with this monitor. If you need a do-everything 24"
monitor, buy this one.

(More customer reviews)We settled on this
system because:
- We already owned a 5-disc progressive scan DVD player
- The size of the room and seating position eliminated 6.1 systems
as a possibility
- Two optical inputs
- Two-way front and rear speakers
This system sounds great with both the Pro Logic II applied to PCM
stereo content (like the Band of Brothers reruns on the History
Channel) as well as quality 5.1 content. We watched The Last
Samurai with this system last night and were very impressed. If
having your dogs constantly jumping up thinking someone/thing is
outside is a measure of system quality, then this one is a beauty.
The rear surrounds got them started every time. As for power, I
haven't had any need to crank it past 50% volume yet.
The only other consideration you may want to make is that the power
supply and amp are within the subwoofer, and the control and power
cord from the sub to the receiver is only ~6ft, which does limit
sub placement.
One tip if you decide to purchase this system: go out and get
yourself a roll of 16-gauge wire. They supply ~105 ft of pre-cut
wire (5 sections) with this system, but it is a bit thin. You'll
need connectors if you want to go 14 gauge or thicker based on the
speaker connection size.
If you've got a smallish room and already own a DVD player,
consider this system.

Panasonic SCHT05 Home Theater System
The SC-HT05 home theater system from Panasonic makes it easy to
bring the cinematic experience into your home. The SC-HT05 packages
a home theater receiver with six surround-sound speakers. Connect
your TV and a DVD player to the SC-HT05 and you have an instant
home theater. You can take advantage of the receiver's versatility
by connecting other audio and video components, as well. At the
heart of the SC-HT05 is a sophisticated, flexible,
easy-to-customize core component for both audio and home theater.
The receiver's Dolby Digital and DTS decoders provide crisp, clear
sound, and Dolby Pro Logic II Surround yields richness to movies
and music. The SC-HT05 has three surround modes: movie, music, and
panorama. The adjustable music and panorama settings add surround
effects to stereo sources. These settings can be altered to fully
customize your audio experience. Panasonic's Sound Field Control
gives your sound further definition with six preset modes for music
and an additional six settings for movies and television audio.
With Sound Field Control, you can make adjustments based on what's
important to you. You can enhance the dialogue in dramatic movies,
enhance the crowd noises for sporting events, or simulate a live
club sound for your favorite music. Dynamic range compression
allows you to listen to content recorded with Dolby Digital at low
volumes while maintaining audio clarity. It's a perfect option for
late-night viewing or listening. The SC-HT05 receiver supports a
wide array of audio and video components: CD players, DVD players,
DVD recorders, VCRs, and more. An AM/FM tuner is built into the
unit with 30 presets for your favorite stations. The unit features
a variety of audio and video inputs, including composite
audio/video inputs, and a digital audio input connection. The
speaker set includes two front speakers, two surround speakers, a
center speaker, and a subwoofer. The front-channel speakers put out
30 watts per channel and the subwoofer kicks out 110 watts per
channel. The SC-HT05 features a unique set of controls to
completely customize your speaker placement and configuration. When
you set up your speakers, you can optimize the sound by selecting
the appropriate speaker size. The large speaker setting reproduces
a full sound range, especially the lower levels of bass. For small
speakers, the setting makes automatic adjustments to the bass range
reproduction to avoid distortion and speaker damage. The pre-set
adjustments can also be manually changed. The receiver's
versatility allows you to configure an array of both large and
small speakers in a surround-sound setup. You can also focus the
sound of your home theater by inputting the distance of your front,
center, and surround speakers from your primary seating location.
The easy setup can be adjusted quickly if you change the layout of
your room, or if you add speakers. The universal remote control
included with the receiver allows you to control the other
components in your home theater, as well as all six speakers in the
multichannel audio array. The SC-HT05 also includes a sleep timer

(More customer reviews)Bose, Sony, Denon,
and Phillips also make similar products. I tested them all
extensively (as best you can in a store). The performance for all
of them was very good except for the Phillips, which was clearly a
step below (but also very inexpensive). So in the end I purchased
the Samsung on equal performance and best value/price. Be careful
about the Bose and Denon - they do not always have the HDMI
output.
After setting up the system and listening to music and playing
movies in my home, I am very happy with the purchase. The setup was
easy and straightforward. Hardest thing was getting the rear cover
back on. You just have make sure all the wires feed throught the
opening in the bottom cetner of the cover. The sound is great.
Virtual surround is pretty good too. Not as good as true 5.1, but I
didn't have to run wires to the back of the room either! Video
quality is also outstanding.
The appearance of the unit is also outstanding. It has a very nice
black finish and looks great with the Samsung TVs. One word of
caution on the operation, the DVD/CDs load from the top and the
unit is rather tall. This makes it difficult to fit/use the unit in
some entertainment centers. I had to leave the middle shelf out of
the unit I bought to make it fit/work. Was not a big deal, but
something that should be considered.
Overall, a great unit at a great price!

(More customer reviews)Great product from
Sony, I have had it for about 2 weeks now, I have played it every
day made it go through some rigorous tests. Works perfect, I did a
compare with Bose 321GSX and found this to be a lot better for half
the price!.
Excellent surround sound effect, IPOD dock works great, rear
wireless speakers are amazing, even though Sony says not to keep
the unit under the shelf, it still works great and the rear
wireless work perfectly.
Easy setup, and looks great, I even hid the subwoofer behind the TV
and did the auto calibration..sounds great.
I'd recommend a 100% buy.

(More customer reviews)I bought this unit
through Amazon, who actually just forwarded the order to
Crutchfield. Still, very fast service and shipping was free.
I have experimented with other wireless solutions such as X10 and
Advent. The big thing about this unit was the 50W X 2 amplifier
built into the receiver. Other systems require you to provide
amplification after the receiver to power the speakers.
OK, a quick breakdown:
Looks - Good enough. Not an issue for me. My transmitter and
receiver are both hidden from sight. Silver might not fit your
scheme.
Ease of Use - Good. Need to connect preconnected speaker wire from
the Xmitter to my amp, and power. Receiver needs power and user
supplied speaker wire. Then, if needed, adjust the channel 1-4 on
both units to avoid local RF interference.
Functionality - Good enough. I use it for rear channel speakers
that generally don't need much amplification. Also, I stopped being
an audiophile years ago as my hearing degraded, so the audio
quality is fine by me. In 5.1 DVD movie use it performs very well
and provides the surround experience I want, without the wires I
don't want.
Gotchas - Antenna placement is very important. The box claims 100
ft range, but doesn't specify signal quality at that distance. My
units are about 14 ft apart, and the antennae must be at the same
height to provide the best sound. No putting the transmitter on top
of your stereo rack, and the receiver under the couch. That
orientation provided lots of pops and clicks as my wife walked
between the two units. Also, I wish both pieces were squared off
and had wall mount holes. This would provide additional mounting
options.
Overall - Works as advertised/expected. I'm happy with it. However,
if you aren't as lazy as I am, run the wires through your walls for
better sound.

Kenwood RFU-6100 Wireless Module for Surround
Speakers
Eliminate the biggest hassle of home theater: wiring surround sound
speakers. The Kenwood RFU-6100 is a wireless solution that features
a transmitter and receiver that operate using RF (radio frequency),
which eliminates the speaker AC plugs found on conventional
wireless speaker systems. With the RFU-6100, you can use
higher-quality surround speakers than are typically found in
conventional surround speaker systems.
The separate RF receiver unit has a built-in high-power digital
amplifier for the surround speakers (up to 50 watts x 2 channels),
which dramatically improves sound quality over conventional
wireless systems, and it can be used up to 100 feet away from the
transmitter. Active circuitry reduces noise interference, and 4
selectable RF transmission channels eliminate interference from
other RF devices.

(More customer reviews)Very pleased so
far. Sounds great, plenty of power to rock your media room, and was
easy to set up. There's an on-screen setup feature that lets you
easily customize the setup for your particular room configuration.
An included microphone lets you do a push-button fine-tuning of the
sound relative to speaker placement. It's cool to see the system
report exactly how far all the speakers are away from the
microphone.
I also purchased the wireless surround kit from Sony. Setup for
this was also pretty simple, and was supported by the HDX500
system.
Remote is typical Sony - lots of buttons. But fairly intuitive thus
far.
The digital media port works well with the different generations of
iPods we have in the house. On-screen graphics are very
rudimentary, however, which is a big departure from the iPod
interface.
There are a bunch of different sound fields that could be better
described in the on-screen system or in the manual.

(More customer reviews)I WAS in the market
for a replacement for my aging Lexmark X6100 All-In-One so I was
very up beat when I found out that Kodak has come up with "cheap
ink" AiO printer line.
I got the 5500 at Best Buy for what I though was a decent price of
$199.
I set it up, printed a demo page, calibrated the printer and
printed a diagnostic page. Printer was pretty slow and noisy but
worked fine so far. Then I sent to it a 4x6 photograph and got the
familiar and popular error saying that "the print head is missing
or needs to be replaced". After reinstalling the print head over
and over as suggested by the diagnostic message, I gave up after
loosing 4 hrs of my life. Next day, I called the Customer Support
at Kodak. The person with a very high level of certainty diagnosed
my issue as a 'faulty print head' - seemingly a very popular cause
with this printer. The print head was to arrive overnight - It
arrived 3 days later. Replacing the head did not help. So, I went
to the Kodak website and learned that there is a new firmware for
this printer. After uploading the new firmware to the printer it
went dumb. It was spitting out two sheets and then wrinkling up and
spitting out more pages. No way to stop it except pulling the plug.
So, I did. Next day, convinced that it must be an isolated issue, I
went to Best Buy to replace the printer. I went through the exact
same initial steps again and even got further this time. I was able
to print 8 4x6 color photos in the "Best" mode, which looked pretty
good as far as color saturation, but were a bit skewed. They also
used up close to 50% of my color ink cartridge! So, I estimate that
I can get probably only about 20-25 such prints out of a full color
ink cartridge, which is much much less than the advertised 35. Then
I tried the double sided print from a network computer and found
out that the duplex option is disabled on every computer except the
one to which the printer is physically connected. This is of course
not advertised anywhere. So, I decided to test the double sided
printing on the host. It was sloooooooooooow and not printing out a
large part of the top of the page. So, I said to my self - Ok,
there must surely be a good reason for the new firmware to be
offered on Kodak's website. So, I uploaded it again and...the
printer went dumb again...
I actually read the reviews on Amazon and still decided to give
this printer a try "because it looked sooo nice and offered sooo
much". I said to myself, what the heck - I am a pretty savvy techie
- I can certainly do better than these "Amazon amateurs". Well, now
I am joining what actually turned out to be a pretty wise Amazon
crowd with my tail and ears curled all the way down in my
disappointment.
Next day, I returned the second printer and am sticking to my old
Lexmark for time being.
Kodak 5500 and especially its software and firmware are of poor
quality. Endless errors, less than ideal prints, DON'T BUY.
Consider yourself warned.
And...please read more interesting reviews of its sibling - the
5300 series.
One more thing - "friendly Kodak guy". Please spare me your
comment...
