My copy of the second edition of this industry standard text goes directly from page 100 to page 133. Several chapters are missing. Very strange indeed. It's a classic. I just wish I had all of it.

Kurzweil PC3X 88 Note Performance Controller and V.A.S.T. Workstation Keyboard, Hammer Action Keys, Black Review

I've just come back from my local music store after trying the PC3X and the SP2, and being assured by the earnest young sales clerk that the Kurzweil reps had told him their primary audience was not the workstation programmer but, as the name suggests, the "performer," who simply requires the best piano possible for his Saturday night gigging.
But no one could answer my questions about the instrument, nor could anyone draw up one of the many acoustic pianos for a head to head face-off between the PC3 and the SP2. This is a heavy board with everything on it and a steep learning curve--along with over a thousand voices and set-ups. Do I wish to spend a week learning how to call up a few of the most practical voices? Do I want to haul around 60 pounds worth of artillery (excluding power adapters, amplifiers, etc)? Do I really want an RMI piano sound (one of my first pianos, made by Rocky Mountain Industries, aka Allen Organ) and the Take 6 samples? (What! No Frank Sinatra sample?) Lastly, could I resist a price just under 2 grand?
The answer is yes. I decided on the SP2 (I've gone through three SP76s, and the SP2 has 76 notes plus semi-weighted rather than fully weighted keys. Significance: a keyboard you can actually carry). I have doubts about Kurzweil's concern for the performer even with respect to the SP line. While in the store, I couldn't figure out how to access the basses or layer on a ride cymbal. And the thing comes with a gratuitous drum machine. But it's at least 25 pounds lighter than the PC3. Nuff said.
(if you want a more practical piano, but only slightly less heavy instrument, with fully-weighted action, look at the recently discontinued PC1se, which the same Amazon vendor, 8th Street Music, is advertising at a great price (same as the SP2). I would have ordered it--but a roadie apparently doesn't come with it.)

Alesis Fusion 8HD 88-Note Keyboard Workstation Review

AlesisFusion8HD88-NoteKeyboardWorkstation
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I personally like the keyboard action a lot though it may be light for some people...its not as spongy-light as a Korg Karma but its not as heavily weighted as a Kurzweil SP76. Velocity, release velocity and mono aftertouch are standard.
Some people have been asking how I like the Fusion's Piano and, more specifically, how it stacks up against the Korg and Yamaha offerings...
Well, It kind of depends on what you like personally.
Let me explain; the Piano on my Motif Rack was a brittle piece of crap to my ears. The piano on the Fusion is a lot more realistic. Personal taste varies on piano sounds quite a bit though - I've got an old Baldwin Acrosonic Spinet in the studio that I love!
I needed at least one "workstation" type keybord with realistic instrument sounds like piano, clav and strings in my studio. I started with a Korg Karma but its sounds were overhyped plus it had the absolute worst keyboard I have ever felt. Later I traded it out for a Yamaha Motif rack - besides its too-bright sound it had awful MIDI timing slop...I sold it to help fund the Fusion.
Through my ADAM monitors, the Fusion has a nicely flat, unhyped sound. In my opinion, the Fusion's patches sit in a mix a little nicer than Korg and Yamaha - I didn't have to compress and EQ them to get them to "play nice".
I'm playing the Fusion along with a Serge Modular, Nord Modular, Yamaha VL-1, E-mu Planet Earth, Waldorf MicrowaveXT and a DSI Polyevolver Keyboard and I tell you, the Fusion can certainly hold its own, even with a disparate bunch of "weird guys". LOL! It really has a unique voice of its own thats different enough to be a very welcome addition :)
The unique sound engines in the Fusion are just a blast to program and I love their sound...that's where I think it really shines, though Its obviously no slouch as a sampler either - now I can finally trash my old S2000.
It seems fairly solid. I'm not planning on gigging with it - if I was, I would certainly buy a decent case, but I would do that for any synth I planned on transporting ;) I haven't had any lockups or software crashes yet...I've been digging pretty hard and deep into the beast since I got it and it seems very reliable so far. This is a much more mature OS version though...If you're looking into a Fusion, make sure the most recent OS is loaded - some of the earlier ones were very buggy.

After two uses the amplifier stopped working. There was sound coming out but no amplification. The customer service asked it to be shipped to CA. After that they stopped answering the phone. Shipping would have cost a bunch, so gave it for repair to a local repair shop. They looked at it and said it was fried, the whole board needed replacement costing $250. Finally threw the amplifier in the trash and bought Behringer instead.

USB Music Studio Kit Review

USBMusicStudioKit
Average Reviews:

I must admit that I was mildly amused by some of the reviews of this product.
First, you ARE NOT purchasing software with this package...you are purchasing the USB-MIDI adapter. The additional software that may be included in this package are bonuses; so do not be surprised that some of them are demo versions. Also, there is no spyware included. An Internet connection absolutely IS NOT required for any of the included software, though you can register the software via an Internet connection if you so choose.
Second, the adapter works just fine in Windows XP and requires NO EXTRA SOFTWARE to work. Plug one end into your MIDI device, plug the other end into a USB port, and the built-in Windows drivers will take care of the rest. The device also works under Windows 98, though not as well (it has difficulty with simultaneous events, so chords from a MIDI keyboard may not register correctly).
As with most inexpensive adapters, there are latency issues with this device. Performing multi-track recordings with this device will be difficult. But as a simple MIDI device, it works quite well.
I thought this was a good purchase though a bit overpriced. Then again, I knew what I was buying.

Casio CTK720 Music Keyboard Review

CasioCTK720MusicKeyboard
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I purchased this Casio portable keyboard to replace a Yamaha instrument that had apparently gotten fried inside from having used the wrong AC power adapter. Not to mention that my very old Casio MT240 has either mysteriously disappeared from my house, or, more likely, has been stashed away so well that I can't find it. After searching for the missing keyboard for several weeks without any luck, I decided that I needed to buy another keyboard, since it bothered me that I had no portable instrument to take to picnics, nursing homes, Christmas gatherings, and otherwise perform on the go.
The Casio CTK720 is a very basic keyboard, primarily designed for a beginner. However, there are plenty of features to satisfy the intermediate player and the keyboard hobbyist, such as myself. It has 61 full-size keys; 32-note polyphony; auto-accompaniment, in which the player may play a chord with one finger, or use the "fingered" mode, where one must hold down all the keys in a chord in order to get any sound from the left-hand side of the keyboard.
There are many styles and voices from which to choose when playing this instrument. Plus, there is a three-step teaching system to aid the beginner keyboardist. To add to the fun, there is a microphone jack so one can sing along while playing or listening to the built-in songs on this keyboard. In total, there are 100 songs in this instrument, divided into two banks: a piano bank, with traditional piano songs; and a song bank, with fully orchestrated songs. There is a jack to accommodate an AC power adapter. It would probably be wise to purchase the Casio AD5R Adapter and only use 6 AA batteries when playing this instrument outdoors or in a place where there may not be an available electrical outlet. I've been able to use my original Casio AD5 Adapter, which had been used with my MT240 and other small Casio instruments that I had bought, sold, traded, or just plain given away, through the years.
The Casio CTK720 has an earphone jack for private playing, and a jack to accommodate a sustain pedal, if a person should choose to use one. In my opinion, a sustain pedal definitely improves the sound when playing a portable keyboard. The playing isn't so choppy.
One of the things that appealed to me about this keyboard is that there are dedicated sliding switches to adjust the volume levels for the master, microphone, and auto-accompaniment volumes. This is reminiscent of the older Casio instruments. There is also a USB port to connect the CTK720 to a PC to download styles and other files from the Casio Web site. I haven't really done anything with that.
This keyboard does not have touch sensitivity. The piano and other voices are adequate enough, but they certainly don't compete with the more expensive instruments that I own. However, it beats my cheesy late-eighties Casio hands down, pardon the pun. If you want to improve the sound, hook the CTK720 to a small keyboard amp. I have a Crate KX15. The amplifier's 3-band equalizer and the 15 watts of power, compared to the 4 watts in this Casio, will make a big difference.
If you seriously want to study music, this is not the keyboard to buy. I bought it for pure fun, portability and ease of use; and also because it was a clearance item from another online store. I was able to get free shipping because I also purchased a gig bag in order to transport this instrument. The keyboard was only $79.00 and the gig bag was $29.99. A great price for a piano in a bag, wouldn't you say?
In summary, I wouldn't pay more than $100.00 for this keyboard. There are a lot of rhythms that I wouldn't even use. Though there are many voices, the organs and synths are pretty weak. The overall sound quality is certainly listenable, but nothing to write home about. It is simply a good basic keyboard for the budgetk-conscious person. A fun piano one can put in a bag.

I'm a semi-pro jazz pianist. I own an old Balwin baby grand and a top end Roland rd700sx keyboard. I bought the Casio as a practice keyboard at my summer home. I couldn't be more pleased with it. The action is very heavy (a good quality) - heavier that either of my other pianos, but not as much as your average Steinway grand. But the action is also very responsive and quite a pleasure to play. The primary piano sound is balanced and nice to listen to (the others not so).
The tone is no where as beautiful or as expressive (wide dynamic range) as my Roland, but the Roland cost 4 times as much!.
It is very useful for practicing and the built-in speakers are loud enough to play in a party setting. I've used it for gigs with a stereo amp and it's very adequate - and weighs 27 lbs. I've seen it selling for less at other online musical instrument sites so check around.
All in all a very nice keyboard and well worth the cost.

Armstrong Model 102 USA Student Flute, Standard Review

Armstrong 102 is a Student (Beginner) C foot Flute that is closed hole and silver-plated with flat key cups to prevent air leakage. Heavy plating and sturdy mechanism assure that your student will play this model for years. Adjusting screws are top mounted (easy repair). The only difference w/Armstrong 104 is undermount adjusting screws (cosmetic). Other options are Offset G (easier to play with small hands) or inline G. If you see a student flute with a curved headjoint (Armstrong 1042H), it is for students (or adults w/shoulder problems) who can't reach the keys on this model (straight head joint).
My daughter's Armstrong 102 is being played for the 5th year in High School Marching Band. This is an excellent, closed hole beginner flute. It is silver plated (an inexpensive option to introduce your child to the instrument). If you buy a used one, you will see cosmetic wear (scratches, dings, etc.). As long as there are no large dents in the headjoint (all three pieces stay together well), and the Beryllium spring key mechanisms (not out of alignment) or Double Skin Pisoni pad seals (not torn) are problem free, a used Armstong 102 is an inexpensive option for your child to try. Once they decide to stay in band, you should review your options to upgrade to an open hole flute.

USB Teach Me Piano Kit Review

I wanted a usb midi cable, since my new machine doesn't have a game port and I had been using a gameport midi cable to connect my sythesizer to my computer. This piano kit seemed to fit the bill. And, I liked that for about the cost of a cable I get the piano instruction software for my son basically included.
Before buying, I verified with Voyetra that this cable works both with mac and pc, since I have a PC desktop and Mac laptop. I didn't want a PC only cable. (Mac OSX has built-in compatible USB drivers for this Turtle Beach brand cable.)
Unfortunately, I spent over half a day trying combinations of connecting the cable between 2 different synths and my two computers... I get either computers to send data to control either synth, but got flaky MIDI IN data coming into the computers from every combination. It would send either random data or only "note off" commands but not "note on".
Eventually I gave up, suspecting the cable rather than my synths, computers, or application software. So I emailed voyetra tech support (they have no phone support), who replied on the next business day suggesting I download and install the firmware upgrade from their website. The upgrade worked easily, and now everything works great. (Note that the firmware upgrade needs to be run on a PC not a Mac.)
The included piano instruction software is good, and my son enjoys it, but it uses a lower screen resolution, leading me to believe that it was not written recently. But it has no problem running under XP.
Overall it's a nice product for the money, but the install was frustrating. You might need to know a bit about your synth, MIDI, and how to troubleshoot -- unless you get lucky.

M-AudioDCP-300AdvancedDigitalConsolePiano(DarkWoodGrain)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I recently purchased the M-Audio DCP-300. This is the third digital piano I have bought in the last 3 years. The first two were different brands and I dearly loved them both (Casio and Viscount). I am not, however, satisfied wtih the M-Audio. The keys have a clunking sound when depressed/struck which is very annoying. The tone is very strident and tin like even with adjustments. When the instrument arrived the bracket for holding the earphones was broken totally off. The shipping box it arrived in was in good condition, but the piano was not and had obviously been dropped BEFORE it was packaged for sending since it shows damage on one end. I would not recommend the M-Audio brand to anyone. My other two pianos were in the same price range and are 4 to 5 star pianos. I am sorry to write a bad report but it is my opinion you would be wasting your money on this product.

Montana CL80 Full Size Classical Guitar Review

MontanaCL80FullSizeClassicalGuitar
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought my Montana in a pawn shop in New Mexico, really looking for a guitar to just knock around and not worry about scratching up. I wasn't expecting much, but was pleasantly suprised. For a 'no-name' brand, the guitar has a pretty rich, warm sound and a lot of volume behind it. I would recommend replacing the strings once you get it, and for the first few months, the guitar has a habit of going out of tune but after it's broken in, it keeps it's tune pretty decently. The fret board is painted black and the black paint rubs off after you play it a bit, the wood is showing through where I do chords and I've owned it for about six months.
It's not terrible for a low end classical guitar but be prepared, the fretboard is rather wide and takes a bit of finger strength to do chords.

We purchased this item for my wife who is an acoomplished pianist. She has a grand piano and has played and taught piano (private and college level).
Reason for purchase, to have a portable item that could be used by us in churches or situations where a decent paino was not available. This unit is very portable. A little bulkier then the smaller keyboards but you do have the benefit of a standard piano keyboard.
She is happy with the tone quality and action of the keys. The Casio will definately handle most of the music that she would play.
She realizes that this does not compare to her grand piano but she admits that it is an excellent item for the money.
The only drawback is that it does not have a dedicated line to hook into an amplifier. An adapter has to be used on the headphones jack.
Definately a good buy.
