Bichon Frise started from Barbet or Water Spaniel, from which ‘’Barbichon’’ was derived from and then became ‘’Bichon’’. Frise was added later on to its name referring to the dog’s soft, cotton like hair.
Bichons are happy dogs, they journeyed a lot and they were often used as an item for exchange by sailors, as they voyaged from one land to another. The dogs were introduced to the Canary Island teneriffe, where they gained credits from the Spanish seamen in Spain. In 1300’s the Italian sailors came across the dog’s merry disposition that they later on returned them to their land, where they became known as beloved pets of Italian aristocracy.
In the 1500’s the breed was very much popular that they were loved by Infantas (Spanish and Portuguese princesses) and the painters of Spanish schools always involve the breed in their paintings. In fact, this dog is seen in the famous Spanish artist, Francisco Goya’s works.
This breed was also used as a circus dog, for its naturally gentle and playful nature. Nowadays, the Bichon is appreciated and cared for as an animal for companionship. It is not regarded as a retriever or water dog, though it enjoys the water and retrieving, the Bichon’s job is to be a companion dog.
In spite of their reputation, this breed went through a period of losing its recognition. It became the ‘’common dog’’ that you see roaming in streets, performing in circus and fairs and accompanying the blind, in the twentieth century. Dogs were out of favour during that time, that it was almost wiped out in that century.
In 1956, the breed arrived in United States with the Picault Family. They moved from France to Wisconsin where they stayed until eventually moving to California in 1960. During their stay, California became the heart of this dog’s breeding in America. The first grooming demonstration was explained by Frank Sabella during then annual Bichon Frise Club meeting in 1969. Until now, the lion like hair cut of this breed is still practiced and became the standard cut for the dog.
In 1971, the dog was recognized by the American Kennel Club and later on became eligible to participate in the non-sporting group at AKC dog shows.
