Ive played by ear and taught myself for about 9 years and now would like to take my playing to the next level. I play mainly acoustic, but would love to learn how to really develop my ear and be classically trained and could still jam and stuff. Learning to Play Guitar – Acoustic vs Electric ?
I am planning on buying a guitar and “teaching myself to play” as money is an object so guitar lessons may not be affordable for me at the minute and also lots of people have recommended good internet guides. Anyway i have been looking at guitars and there are lots of good deals on electric guitars at the minute which i am considering buying but i have been told to learn on an acoustic guitar first, is this correct? What are you thoughts….. Should i start on an acoustic or do you think i could start on an electric? And does anyone know any good FREE tutorial websites for learning to play?

I made no comment about learning other languages. I was commenting on the usefulness of the Welsh language. At the moment I am learning to speak German so your opinion of my 'attitude' is based on the false assumption that, because I dislike the way that the Welsh language is being kept artificially (and expensively) alive for the tiny minority, then I must be against the learning of ANY language.
You are wrong. Had I the need/opportunity to speak to any other race, I would attempt to learn AT LEAST a smattering of their laguage. My extemely busy life does not permit me time to indulge in every learning opportunity that I would like to take but my 'attitude' to learning useful languages is NOT what you seem to think.

Well Goatee you got it dead right when you said that playing an instrument with others, whether in a band or at a jam session really does increase your ability. A young fella in his late twenties turned up at our jam night a few years ago. He used to play drums at school and sat in on a few numbers, but he longed to play guitar so he started to take lessons. I've watched his transformation from stumbling beginner to a level of proficiency where he is now fronting a band. The way our jam night works is that any musician is invited on stage to play two or three numbers and you can either go solo or invite others to back you. At most sessions there are usually several lead guitarists, bass players, drummers and organists so there is never a lack of support. So all power to your elbow Goatee and keep on gigging.
How do you play guitar?
I'm trying to learn acoustic guitar. My fingers seem big or should i say stubby, they're not really bigger than your average fingers but when i try to finger a cord one finger can disrupt another string. I'm really confused on how to fix this problem much less change finger positions easily. Maybe i'm just not meant to play guitar. I'm just wondering how others do it.
