About the Author:Many people have multiple loans running simultaneously. At some point, it may become difficult to make all the payments on time and manage the loans. Direct loan consolidation is a way to manage these loan amounts in a more organized manner. The borrower can merge all loans and pay one fixed rate of interest on the total amount.
The interest rate on a consolidation loan is based on the average of the interest rates on the loans being consolidated. This is then rounded to the next highest one-eighth of one percent. The rate must not exceed 8.25 percent, and it is a fixed rate that remains the same throughout the life of the loan.
If a person is close to the repayment of the loan, it might not be profitable to consolidate. Consolidation is beneficial depending on the original terms of an existing loan compared to the new terms offered. The factors to consider are monthly payment amounts and variable or fixed interest rates. It is advisable to consult a loan consultant.
Generally, websites also provide online calculators to compare consolidation rates with existing rates. It is also a good idea to check with the existing lender to see if they can offer any better rates before opting for consolidation.
The borrower must also check out the eligibility options. The major benefits that a borrower can gain by opting for consolidation are lower interest rates, flexible repayment options and reduced monthly payments. A borrower can also retain any subsidy that was offered on the old loans.

Most high school students begin applying for scholarships in January of their senior year. They make a concerted effort to apply for as many as they can find but usually end up getting frustrated with all the requirements. Their final months in high school can either be a world of fun or can stress students and their families to a breaking point.
If your student is trying to cram dozens of scholarship filings into their last couple months of high school, they are sure to be overwhelmed. Instead of standing by and watching them struggle with this, encourage to begin the process much earlier and help them to get organized.
Organization Is Key:
If you can convince your child to start the process when they are a junior in high school, their efforts will be much more effective and substantially more efficient. Have them approach their high school guidance department and get a copy of the scholarship list that they provide to seniors. Once they have this list, sit down with your student, review and highlight the scholarships that they may qualify for.
Now they have an idea of what is available, what the criteria and requirement for each program will be. Next try to encourage them to set aside one hour each week to review applications, check scholarship program websites, write some practice essays and start thinking about who they would like to approach for letters of recommendation.
Building Their Scholarship Portfolio:
Before the end of their junior year, help them to start building a scholarship portfolio. This should include their personal resume, sample letters of recommendation, sample scholarship applications and essays. Also have them compile a list of the names, addresses and phone numbers of their personal references, favorite teachers, volunteer activity supervisors, part-time employment supervisors and any other adults that they have had positive interaction with.
Your student is now months ahead of their peers when it comes to being prepared for scholarship success. You have also helped them to reduce the stress and anxiety that most high school seniors feel in that final rush to meet scholarship deadlines. Most deadlines a scheduled for April each year, but be sure to check each one that your student is interested in and be sure they place that deadline on their calendar.
CAUTION… Facebook, MySpace and YouTube Users
If your student has a Facebook, MySpace or YouTube page or any of the other social media sites, make sure that they either review them for inappropriate messages, photos, videos or other postings. If their sites have any of these issues, make sure that they get them cleaned up now. If they cannot get them resolved, have them close that account and start a new one. Make sure that the new one remains more appropriate.
In the same respect, if they are using these sites and they have a great friend following, some nice photos of family, friends and activities or videos that they can be proud of, this can be a great asset to their scholarship efforts. Share them on their scholarship applications and encourage the scholarship committee members to view these positive visual representations of your child.
Please be sure to have several parents, teachers or other adults review these sites before they are used. Sometimes students see them differently that adults do and if some modifications are needed, offer to help make them more adult friendly. Even if you don’t provide this information, many scholarship committees will google your name and see what comes up anyway.
File Early
Now your child has plenty of time to focus on senior year fun and as long as they continue to spend one hour a week on scholarships, they will have all their applications in early. Early applicants have a psychological advantage with scholarship committees, especially if they offer an organized complete application. Personal websites, photos and videos are also more effective if they are shared earlier. It gives the committee member time to leisurely review those resources. Most applications come it within 10 days of the deadline and everything is much more rushed at that point.
File Regularly
The last tip is to file regularly throughout your high school and college years. many scholarships go unclaimed during the college years because no one applies for them. Make a point to visit the college financial aid office at least once each semester and ask if there are any new scholarships that they would qualify for.
If you are lucky, smart and studious enough to get really good grades, this alone could be a great reason to ask for more financial aid, grants or scholarships. It can’t do any harm to ask and you might be surprised by the answers. Remember to be persistent, check back each semester and ask for help.

Every list that rates the fastest growing job opportunity industries rate the healthcare field as number one. Nursing jobs rank high on the healthcare jobs that will experience growth in the next few years. Nursing is a rewarding field of work, and the shortage of qualified nurses almost guarantees job security.
Education for Nurses
Most nurses must have a bachelor’s degree in nursing to qualify for the top nursing jobs. In tough economic times, many potential nursing students may hesitate to incur the debt of a four year degree. But, there are opportunities to obtain the nursing degree, work in an industry with high job satisfaction, and have portions of the loan forgiven. Even nurses already working might qualify for a student loan forgiveness program.
Student Loan Forgiveness for Nurses Programs
The College Cost Reduction and Access Act of 2007 makes it possible for nurses working full-time in public service jobs to qualify for forgiveness of their eligible student loans. The nurse must have already made 120 monthly payments on their loan while they are employed. After those 120 payments have been made, the nurses working in public service jobs will have the remaining amount of the loan forgiven and will not be responsible for repayment.
Types of Loans Eligible for Forgiveness Programs
Any loan that has not entered into default would be considered eligible for loan forgiveness. These types of loans include:
Federal Direct Stafford/Ford Loans Federal Direct Unsubsidized Stafford/Ford Loans Federal Direct PLUS Loans – for parents and graduate students
Other types of loans may also qualify under the student loan forgiveness program if they are consolidated into a Direct Consolidation Loan. One caveat is that any payments that were made before the consolidation will not count towards the 120 month payments that must be made before the loan is forgiven.
Nurse Eligibility
A registered nurse will be considered eligible if they have completed their training and received a nursing diploma, associate’s degree, bachelor’s degree or graduate degree and is licensed in their state of employment. The degree must be conferred from an accredited school in the United States.
Eligible nurses must be employed full-time, working at least 32 hours per week at either a non-profit facility or as a faculty member of a school of nursing. The nurse has to be a United States citizen or a National and Lawful Permanent Resident.
Non-profit facilities that are considered include:
Hospitals Federally Qualified Health Centers, Indian Health Centers, Rural Health Clinics, Native Hawaiian Health Centers Nursing Homes Hospice Programs Home Health Agencies Skilled Nursing Facilities Ambulatory Surgical Centers State or Local Public Health or Human Services Departments
Potential Nursing Students
If you want to embark on a career of helping people but are uncertain about the high cost of education, entering a nursing school and giving back two years to work in a qualified medical facility might be right for you. Through the Student Loan Forgiveness for Nurses Program a substantial portion of your loan would not have to be repaid. Plus, you would be helping vulnerable populations in need of care.

Debt relief programs have never been more popular than today. With millions out of work, their savings drying up, and no good options in sight – debt relief programs offer them the slim chance to rid themselves of some of their debt.
There is nothing more terrifying for a person than to find himself in a debt situation so bad it seems he is drowning in them. It is good to know though that there is such a thing as debt relief programs for consumers that can get them out of their terribly hopeless debt situation and offer assistance to them so that they can slowly pick up their lives and pay off their loans.
What is a debt relief? It is basically a forgiveness given to a debt, whether partial or total, or allowing a particular debt to grow in interests slowly, such that the debtor (who may be an individual or a corporation) may be given another opportunity to repay his debts.
The declaration of bankruptcy is probably the most common and most popular choice for debtors in order to get out of their debts. Contrary to popular belief, however, declaring oneself to be bankrupt is not a wise choice because it would result in the person having a bad credit history. Filing for bankruptcy also makes it harder to get loans and, if you are able to get a loan, you will have to pay a higher interest rate. And, lastly, there is the social stigma that a person filing for bankruptcy has to endure.
Fortunately, there are other debt settlement options available. And with the assistance of debt settlement companies; an individual who is deep in debt can still maintain his credit standing in the community.
Recently, new laws for the protection of consumers were devised by the Federal Trade Commission in order to provide a more viable financial settlement for debts thus giving a financially healthy alternative for debtors to settle their debts without resorting to bankruptcy. These debt relief options include selling other assets such as motor vehicles or real estate or land in order to settle the loan, especially those loans involving very large amounts.
With the enactment of these new laws, several debt settlement companies were accredited in order to provide assistance to debtors and dispensing practical advice on how to successfully manage their debts.
Other debt settlement options include forbearance of interest and debt restructuring. In forbearance, the interest is wiped out thus allowing the debtor to just pay off the principal of his loan. In debt restructuring, on the other hand, the principal amount of the loan may be lessened or a new payment scheme is granted to the debtor thus allowing him to pay off his loan in a longer term and in smaller amounts.
With the development of so many debt settlement options, filing for bankruptcy should be considered only as a last recourse. What the debtor should do is to look for a reputable and trustworthy debt settlement company to advise him on the best options that fit his current situation.

You are buried in debt, your credit cards are maxed out, and you still have car and house loans to pay. Even making a minimum payment is causing a lot of stress on your part and you are still mired deep in debt. In such a predicament, what should you do? For some people, getting a debt consolidation loan is the best option. But, a loan needs to be repaid. What if you can raise funds without ever needing to pay them back? You probably think this is just wishful thinking, but with free government grants, you can have the funds you need to get out of debt without incurring another debt.
Grants.gov, the official Web site of the Federal Government grants program states that there is nearly half a trillion dollars in grant money ready to be disposed of to individuals and business who are in need of financial assistance. There are almost a thousand grant programs offering different forms of assistance to a wide variety of business and individuals. These grants help fund an array of special cases such as higher education assistance, health care assistance, business financing, home ownership and debt consolidation.
The federal government as well as other organizations offers programs that are especially designed for debt relief assistance. However, it is important to understand that financial assistance is not just handed out for the asking. You have to pass a certain eligibility requirement to be able to avail of these government grants.
You should also first locate the right government grant program that is appropriate for your need. The internet offers a great resource for finding a suitable grant program. You can find a wealth of information about government grants, as well as links to various organizations offering grant programs, at the official government site, grants.gov.
