Networking is definitely one of the most important things you have
to do if you want to win a committee. Making a group, gathering
votes, and positioning yourself on top will all be results of
networking. The skills you possess to attract other delegates, to
organize them, and to lead them, will emerge through networking.

Model UN is a competition. The majority of the delegates that
attend conferences, including the competitive delegates, greatly
enjoy the events. However, the reality is that some of the toughest
competition you will face in a committee will care much more about
the awards than the integrity of the conference. Obviously Model UN
is a political competition that tests your diplomacy skills, which
should include the ability to deceive. However, some delegates take
it a few steps too far. Nevertheless, the deception a delegate uses
could come in many different ways. You’re goal should be to protect
yourself from this threat.

In Model UN, compromise is a skill that every best delegate needs
to be well-versed in, as it is often vital in passing a resolution.
Moreover, passing a resolution is obviously the primary purpose of
most committees and a huge reflection of the work you have put in
at a conference. Your receiving of an award is usually not decided
based on whether or not your resolution passed, but using tact and
diplomacy to pass you resolution positively reflects on you from
the perspective of your dais. Therefore, compromise is crucial to
performing outstandingly. It will be better for you to learn that
now then in committee.

Dear MUNmatters, I am have been in a few MUN conferences in my
career, but at my last conference, I had extreme difficulty making
connections with the other delegates. I strove to be cordial and

Conference is about to begin, and undoubtedly you have used the
past fifteen minutes before this first committee session to meet
your fellow delegates. As you take your seat, you have three
delegates in mind that you would like to work with in unmoderated
caucus. You decide to send each of them a note. Kenya, [...]

There are times in a Model UN conference that you will encounter
adversity or make mistakes in your strategy. Actually, I can safely
say that everyone will encounter these problems at every conference
they attend, regardless of their experience level or preparation.
What truly separates the best delegates from the others is their
ability to adapt. In the speed of conference, there is no time to
sit back and wait for situations to correct themselves. You need to
take strategic action to put you back on top. This type of thinking
takes practice and an in depth understanding of Model UN, but in
mastering it, there will not be a situation to which you cannot
adapt. To illustrate this type of thinking, I would like to tell
you a story, the story of creative deception.

Typically, it can be said that no one likes a suck-up, and that is
especially true in Model UN. Though it may seem to the contrary,
chairs are not seeking to inflate their egos with kind words from
delegates in their committee. As a delegate, you have to realize
why they are volunteering their time [...]
