Cerebral Palsy Patients can Look to Lokomat Therapy for Help

Families with children who have suffered birth injuries such as cerebral palsy are always looking for the best types of treatments and medical care that is available to them in order. One method that has been found to be an effective treatment for children with spinal issues has been Lokomat robot-assisted walking therapy.

Lokomat robot-assisted walking therapy utilizes a harness that is suspended over a treadmill with robotic leg straps on it. The patient is attached to the harness and leg straps before a computer begins moving their legs on the treadmill at a controlled speed in a natural motion. The repetitive walking pattern has been found to help strengthen muscles, Improve circulation, and teach the brain walking motions.

recent report from CBS’s New York television station profiled MacKenzie Maher, a young girl who was born with cerebral palsy that initially left her unable to walk. However, after working with doctors and using the Lokomat method in a clinical trial, she is now able to walk on her own.… Read More

Asbestos Wood Chip Reports Prompt Response from Senator

One day after it came to light that asbestos-contaminated bark and wood chip products were being spread in public places in and around Libby, Montana, state Senator Max Baucus is condemning the EPA’s allowance of such a public health hazard.

Earlier this week, the Associated Press reported that the Environmental Protection Agency had been aware of the usage of the wood chips in question at a number of public places throughout the town, such as yards, city parks, and schools. The EPA did not step in and prohibit the chips’ usage until it learned that the AP had launched an investigation into the matter.

In a press release posted on his website Wednesday, Baucus pledged his continued support to help the town of Libby, which has been plagued by asbestos issues caused by a now-defunct W.R. Grace vermiculite mining site for decades now.

“The people of Libby have already been poisoned in the name of greed and I won’t allow them to be victimized again because of negligence,” Baucus said.… Read More

George Washington University Undergoes Asbestos Abatement in Faculty Building

George Washington University conducted asbestos abatementprocesses at one of its major buildings only weeks before students returned to campus to kick off the new school year.

According to the GW Hatchet, the University’s newspaper, Rice Hall – a building that houses offices for some of the school’s more notable and experienced faculty – underwent asbestos abatement projects in August to prevent any risk of asbestos exposure as the school prepares to renovate the building in the near future.

“GW has an asbestos policy that guides the maintenance of asbestos-containing materials in University buildings,” said William Flint, the university’s director of the office of health and safety. “Prior to renovation or demolition of any university building, a hazardous materials survey is conducted using District of Columbia and EPA regulations to determine the risk to students, staff, faculty andconstruction workers. If hazardous materials are discovered, proper abatement is conducted to remove the materials prior toconstruction or demolition.”

Darrell Darnell, the senior associate vice president for safety and security at the school, added that students and faculty at the school were safe and he didn’t foresee any adverse health effects caused by any exposure to asbestos.… Read More

Actos Lawsuit

Actos Lawsuit News

- 1/26/2012: Surgery can be as effective in elderly patients as in younger patients, but it does have a higher rate of postoperative complications in older individuals who have other medical problems (commodities). Elderly people are particularly sensitive to long-term complications, lilce the metabolic disturbances that can follow urinary diversion. In those aged 80 or older, the role of radical cystectomy is controversial. Although newer surgical techniques and improvements in care, before and after the operation, make this an option for increasing numbers of older patients, several studies suggest that its benefit is at best quite minimal, even in relatively fit octogenarians. You need to carefully weigh the benefits and risks of radical cystectomy with your multidisciplinary team before going through such an aggressive operation.

Because bladder cancer surgery can cause serious side effects and debilitation that requires significant healing time and energy, older patients usually tolerate neoadjuvant chemotherapy (given before surgery) better than adjuvant chemotherapy (given after surgery).… Read More

Unfortunately, not all birth defects can be corrected. Some are fatal. Indeed, 20 percent of all infant deaths in the United States are linked to certain birth defects. Other birth defects cause longterm disabilities that affect an individual throughout his or her lifetime. Fifteen-year-old Jimmy, for example, was born with spina bifida, a crippling birth defect. As a consequence, Jimmy’s life is much different than if he had been bom healthy. Jimmy has had to undergo at least fifteen different surgeries, and he is confined to a wheelchair.… Read More

Birth Injury Lawsuit to Proceed Following Supreme Court Ruling

A Florida family will be allowed sidestep a state fund and sue the hospital and doctors they claim acted in negligence and caused their daughter to suffer serious birth injuries. If the Florida birth injury lawsuit is successful, it could have far reaching results concerning doctors’ liability future situations involving birth injuries in the state.

On September 26, 2001, following a car accident that forced her mother into labor, Tristan Bennett was born via cesarean section and required resuscitation and oxygen before being put in a special care nursery.  Only days later, Tristan stopped breathing and suffered a pulmonary hemorrhage as well as other kidney and liver problems.

Follow up tests determined that Tristan had suffered serious and permanent neurological damage. The Bennett family charged that the doctors performing the birth had given Tristan too much intravenous fluid and not tested for serum electrolyte derangements following the birth.

While they wanted to pursue a birth injury lawsuit against the hospital because the injury had occurred after the immediate birth period, they first had to get permission from a judge to avoid falling under the purview of a payout from the Florida Birth-Related Neurological Injury Compensation Association.… Read More

Asbestos Exposure May be Reduced by New Polymer Wall Covering

A British company may have developed a viable new method to keep asbestos products in the walls of older buildings from releasing fibers that could be inhaled by people nearby.

Datatecnics, a Birmingham, England-based company, recently announced its creation of ADAAS (Asbestos Disturbance Automated Alert System), a special type of wall covering that is either plastered or painted onto asbestos products and is designed to prevent small asbestos particles from being released to areas where people may be located. The polymer film is also designed to trigger an alarm if it is breached in any way.

The company claims that using the ASAAS film will help eliminate older forms of asbestos testing and monitoring while being more cost effective as well.

While the company is still looking for investors before any widespread launch of the product, its mere existence could be a sign of good things to come in regard to the prevention of asbestos exposure in the years to come.… Read More

Cerebral palsy can develop by the improper use of forceps during a difficult delivery. This birth injury is a concern for many hospitals, especially when their medical staff could become involved in a birth injury lawsuit due to medical negligence. While deliveries requiring the use of forceps contain certain risk factors, the doctors as well as the medical team are expected to take the necessary precautions to decrease the dangers of a possible birth injury.
The intended use of forceps is to aid in the delivery of infants who are improperly positioned in the mother’s womb or if the mother is having difficulty pushing. Benefits of forceps use include lowering the risk of oxygen deprivation and fetal distress which can lead to such injuries as Cerebral palsy and Erb’s palsy. Cerebral palsy is a disability resulting from nerve injury or trauma to the brain. In some cases, this injury is caused by low levels of oxygen suffered before or during birth.… Read More

Rottenstein Law Group Apprehensive About Possible Consequences from Supreme Court Decision Restricting Liability of Generic Drug Manufacturers

(June 29, 2011, New York, NY) The Rottenstein Law Group, which represents clients with claims stemming from the severe side effects of various prescription drugs, is concerned that the recent Supreme Court decision limiting the liability of generic drug manufacturers will have significant consequences.

On June 23, the Supreme Court of the United States issued its decision in Pliva, Inc. v. Mensing (case no. 09-993) and two related cases. Petitioner Pliva is a generic drug manufacturer. Gladys Mensing, the respondent, developed Tardive Dyskinesia after taking a generic form of the drug Reglan (metoclopramide) manufactured by Pliva. Mensing sued Pliva, claiming that the company was liable for her injuries because it failed to adequately warn consumers of the dangers of the drug, violating the laws of Minnesota. The Supreme Court ruled that Pliva had a complete defense against the claim.

The majority opinion of the Supreme Court supports an “impossibility” defense of behalf of a generic drug manufacturer, as it relates to the claim of violation of state law (by allegedly failing to include warnings on product labelling) because federal law – which completely overrides state law in this situation – requires that labels of generic drugs be the equivalent of the label of the name brand drug.… Read More

Fosamax Side Effects Can Be Life Threatening

06/27/2011

A Fosamax side effect reported by patients that are currently using the bisphosphonate prescription drug is Osteonecrosis of the Jaw (ONJ), and it is becoming a more commonly reported problem with patients taking Fosamax. Osteonecrosis of the Jaw, also known as “dead jaw”, occurs when the jaw bone deteriorates and dies causing facial disfigurement. Victims suffering from this disorder may experience loose teeth, exposed bone, severe pain or loss of jaw mobility.

Doctors prescribe Fosamax to men and women to help avoid bone loss by preventing the turnover in bone cells. However, in some cases, this can leave the jaw bone vulnerable to disease and infection which can lead to health problems such as the development of ONJ. Many cases of Osteonecrosis have developed from a patient undergoing a dental procedure, like an extraction of a tooth which leaves the gums vulnerable to infection while taking Fosamax. In some extreme cases, large sections of the necrotic bone may have to be removed to correct these side effects from Fosamax.… Read More

A Warning to all Fosamax Users

06/23/2011

What is Fosamax? Fosamax is a drug that is prescribed by doctors to men or women to treat and prevent steroid-induced or postmenopausal osteoporosis and also helps to slow bone breakdown, builds bone mass and reduces the risk of bone fractures. Fosamax is also prescribed to men and women to treat a chronic disorder called Paget’s disease which results in abnormal, enlarged and brittle bones.

Many Fosamax problems have been reported from people all across America. In some rare cases, the medication has caused Osteonecrosis of the Jaw to develop, a very serious and possibly disfiguring condition that causes the jawbone to die. The prescription drug Fosamax can also irritate or damage the esophagus which can lead to indigestion, heartburn and ulcers. Significant muscle or bone pain can also be experienced from the usage of Fosamax, but will usually stop when the medication is no longer taken and is not recommended for people who are suffering with severe kidney disease.… Read More

Fosamax Lawsuits Continue To Rise Yearly

06/23/2011

In 2010, evidence was made available to the public regarding Fosamax and abnormal femur fractures. This evidence prompted the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to issue a statement to the general public warning them about the potential problems with Fosamax. In March, public awareness began with a communication about drug safety between doctors and their patients. It was then proclaimed in October that all bisphosphonates, including Fosamax, would now be required to label the medication packaging with new safety information regarding the possible connection to femur fractures. Experts are still conducting an investigation on the newly discovered problem with the FDA reporting that Fosamax is still a cause for much concern.

Since 2008, three different studies have been published connecting Fosamax to a rare type of femur fracture. The first study conducted in May appeared in the issue of the Journal of Orthopedic Trauma and noted some problems associated with Fosamax.… Read More

Fosamax Users, Beware of Side Effects

06/22/2011

An elderly woman went to visit her family dentist because she was experiencing soreness and extreme pain in her dentures caused by the side effects of Fosamax. At the first visit, the elderly woman and her dentist were not aware that the pain she was suffering was from using Fosamax, but he soon discovered that she had developed a serious but rare disease known as Osteonecrosis of the Jaw (ONJ) or sometimes known as “dead jaw.” The elderly woman told her dentist she was currently using Fosamax and was not aware of the dangers or side effects that could occur with the prescription drug. Many dentists from all across America have reported that some of their patients’ jawbones have become so inert that performing any drilling or an implant is almost impossible due to the damage done by Fosamax side effects. Studies have reported less than 400 cases of ONJ, but due to the seriousness of the condition, reported cases need to be further investigated and can no longer be ignored.… Read More

Paxil Birth Defects

06/20/2011

Side effect Paxil. Pregnant women who take Paxil while pregnant, especially during their first trimester, are at an increased risk for having a child born with a birth defect. Recent studies have suggested that women who took Paxil during pregnancy were at an increased risk for having a baby with heart malformations when compared to other antidepressants or to women who were not taking any antidepressants. One study has also linked Persistent Pulmonary Hypertension of the Newborn (PPHN) to the side effects of Paxil.
In December 2005, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a Paxil warning to doctors, other healthcare professionals and consumers regarding the increased risks for Paxil birth defects when the antidepressant is taken during the first trimester of pregnancy. Most of the birth defects included heart defects and, in most cases, were atrial and ventricular septal defects. Both of which are characterized by holes in the walls of the chambers of the heart.… Read More
