Get Bettie Page Hair Easy .. Try the Hairfree brush!
When
one thinks of the "classic pinup" few names come to mind faster
than
Bettie Page. A raven haired beauty and icon of the 50s, she
was best known for her trademark hairstyle, bangs, blue eyes
and uninhibited relationship with the camera.
Bettie's hairstyle is one that women are emulating. Want
the look? Here is how:

Be prepared to color your hair for the full "Bettie homage" look; unless your hair is already dark brown or black. Of course you can still the "the style" without dying your hair but it wouldn't be the Bettie Page look without going dark. -

Have your bangs cut short. The bangs should be equal length across the entire forehead. The bangs need only be long enough to work with rollers or a curling iron. -

Keep the hair (except the bangs) long, coming past the shoulders at least. -

Tame the hair into big, soft curls. If your hair is naturally curly, try a relaxing product. Blow dry the hair with a diffuser and a round brush to achieve the big curls. If you have naturally straight hair, set it with big rollers for a few hours. Set the curls with a lightweight hairspray, as the look should appear soft and natural. -

Use a large curling iron to tame the bangs. They should come straight down but be curled under just enough to add a little bounce and volume. Set with some hairspray. -

And for the "pinup look" spice it up with a large flower on the side of your head for special occasions.
If
you frequently have to use high heat flat iron / curling irons on
your hair, they will eventually damage your hair! Flat irons
often heat up to over 400 degrees. Anything you can do to avoid
that much heat on your hair is a good thing. I came across a very
nice alternative called hairfreé self-cleaning hairbrushes. A
cool line 
of brushes that are beyond unique. With the
slide of a button, this gadget hair brush pushes all the hair out
of it, making it cleaner and easier than a traditional hairbrush.
Another cool feature of these brushes is that you can convert
each one to a vent brush by adjusting a knob. With a vent
brush, you can speed up the blow drying process. Another
big plus ... these brushes can pretty much replace your flat iron
and curling iron.

The Power of Handmade and Ring Seventeen
One of my favorite things about being in Etsy seller is knowing that I’m part of a community that is making changes to the world. Just by providing local goods that are not mass-produced, handmade artists are changing the way that we consume. Many artists are also making a difference by up-cycling and reusing materials that might otherwise be thrown out. Still others are setting an example by using sustainable materials, or reducing the amount of waste that their business produces.
So, today’s ring was created especially for Help the Gulf Coast - a collective Etsy shop run by a handful of dedicated Etsians. 100% of the net profits from this shop go to charities that support communities affected by the disaster, including Oxfam.
This organization is already well known for it’s humanitarian efforts. They have been assisting low income families in the Gulf area since the aftermath of hurricanes Katrina and Rita. Now their focus has had to shift, as the continuing oil damages change the lives of everyone in the area. Oxfam is now working with communities to assess the environmental and economic damages, while still working towards safety measures for the arrival of the next hurricane season.
Ring # 17 - Baby Fish Blues
The color combination is pretty, but also meaningful. This ring is my own tribute to the innocent creatures affected by all that we humans do. Red and pink coral, abalone, whales, salmon and sea birds are just a few of the animals that are being threatened by our activities. They are constantly bombarded by pollution, habitat destruction, and of course, human consumption. It’s a cruel irony that only we can help them from our own wrongdoings.

Wear It Twice: Teacher’s Pet
Everyone loves a long weekend, but is Labor Day break the most dreadful long weekend of the year? When its over, its time for students to go back to school and begin the day-in day-out routine all over again. Sure, there are lots of parents, and eager students, ready for the new semester to begin; but the start of the school year also marks the end of summer.
In anticipation of the years first homeroom period, this months Wear It Twice collection is inspired by some traditional school themes. I started with a pretty apple pendant - a great piece for the first day of school, whether youre a student or a teacher.
The first outfit I created began with a plaid skirt - another school essential. I paired it with a pleated white blouse to complete the uniform look, then finished it with some sassy red Mary Janes and a pretty black floral headband.
The second ensemble is a lot more modern. The printed knit top features a unique torn yarn pattern, and looks great with red skinny jeans. To create a touch of school-girl charm, I added a pair of plaid platform boots and a black and white striped clutch.

Shopping hiatus begins now. NOW! I know it was supposed to being last week. Technically, it was supposed to being at 12:01 AM on January 1st, but you know me. I know me. I suck at stuff like this. Where did my willpower go?
So along with my resolution to be more positive (Man I suck, I can't stop buying things to make myself feel better, I can't stop shopping my feelings, there's the little children in Zimbabwe and the puppies that need me and I just want to buy Nanette Lepore skirts and make-up and oh, wait. What?) I made a teensy little pledge to myself, mostly to test my willpower. Mostly to see if I could actually do it. I like a good challenge. Could I last three months without buying ANYTHING?
(Okay, basic necessities like food, medication, and the occasional replacement item of make-up not included. You all haven't seen me without foundation and my penciled-in-eyebrows. It's not pretty. But replacement items of make-up only, nothing new.)
Running a marathon? Nah. Climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro? For suckers. I need a REAL CHALLENGE here you guys. A REAL TEST OF STRENGTH and COMMITMENT and YOU KNOW ALL THAT STUFF.
And, you know, there's the issue that the entire country is in a recession. Husband and I are in a recession. Husband doesn't make a lot of money, truthfully; like any smart business owner, he only gets rewarded when the company does well. We've been fortunate that the last several years have been great years so we've been rewarded very well. 2008 and 2009 are not (and will not) be the same. Owning a small business can be very cyclical- you save when times are good, so you can make it through when times are bad.
(And thank god Husband is a saver, or else we'd be sca-rewed. Screwed.)
So like the rest of America, it's time to tighten our belts a bit. We are also looking at doing a complete remodel to our townhome this summer (which is 30 years old and needs a lot of cosmetic work done- new carpet, I want wood floors, new furniture, Husband wants one of those showers that has a laser light show and squirts water out from 10 nozzles to the rhythm of whatever music you like) and I'd like to put some of my money towards that, only because that means I can run out and buy things before Husband gets his say-so in it. Ha. Take that, Husband.
So it's not going to kill me. I have enough clothes to wardrobe the entire cast of Mad Men (and the extras...and maybe the set of Gossip Girl, and their extras too). It's not like I'm going to be running around naked and make-up less here. And perhaps a shopping hiatus will make me appreciate the clothes I actually have a bit more. It's easy to get caught in the trap of buy-buy-buy, especially now with everything being on sale and cheap and so, so, so pretty. Oh so pretty.
A shopping hiatus for three months.
Posting it here will make me committed, because you know- apparently posting it IN MY BRAIN did NOT.
Umm. So now for the good stuff- who wants to see what I bought during my last binge? Hee.

New to the Shop :: Carolina Earrings
Last week, I shared how I started a pair of earrings. Here's the finished result!
Introducing my Carolina Earrings. These feature gorgeous artisan borosilicate beads from Patricia Hernandez, olive green vesuvanite briolettes, blue topaz rondelles, tiny faceted amethyst briolettes, and red onyx rondelles.
In my post last week, I showed just the vesuvanite, blue topaz, and red onyx beads. After some playing around, I decided to add in the amethyst. I had originally seen some purple in the boro beads, and decided this color scheme needed a little extra punch. What do you think?

Spotted on StyleWatch, Kendall Jenner, 14-year-old half-sister of Kim, Kloe and Kourtney Kardashian, featured in a fashion campaign for Forever 21s Twist Collection. According to the press release, the sixth collection from Forever 21 Twist features the themed story entitled Rocker Babes with a Twist, and will hit stores at the end of January 2010. Channeling rockabilly style, this collection mixes animal prints with polka dots, plaids and rock-steady graphics, all anchored by a retro Fifties color palette of blacks, reds and blues. Kendall Jenner will be featured as one of the faces of Rocker Babes with a Twist.

Bead Color Triads: Primary Colors
Printers, artists, and scientists know that there are other correct answers to that question, depending on what type of color you mean. Anyone that has actually tried to mix red, yellow and blue paint knows that it doesn't actually work the way it does in preschool cartoons.
In honor of the back to school season, and art teachers everywhere, I thought it would be fun to do things a little differently this month. Were going to look at beads in three different primary color palettes, and perhaps compare how well each one would look in a finished piece.
Building Blocks is the first group of beads that I made, so named because I cant help but see Lego bricks when I look at those blue, boxy Miyuki hexes. The effect is even stronger with transparent ruby seed beads and yellow cats eyes nearby. No matter what the brightness or finish is, something about red, yellow and blue together always brings on memories of crayons and building blocks.
Shattered Light turned out to be a surprisingly irresistible palette. Im usually not a fan of red and green together. I find that it either looks unsophisticated, or that the red is far too orange, and the combination looks garish. But here, the cobalt seed beads seem to anchor the other colors, rein them in and make them work together. The Czech rice beads and TOHO triangles dont even have a hint of Christmasiness with blue there to keep things under control.
Pop Print somehow seems even more youthful than the crayon-colors, with almost fluorescent shades of magenta, yellow and cyan blue. I started with the tagua slice, which is a bit muted, but still leans far enough on the darker side of bubblegum to qualify for this palette. The dyed shell rectangles and 11/o seed beads seem to look tropical and candy-like at the same time. All this palette needs is a pair of headphones, and youve got the makings of a teenaged ensemble from recent, but simpler times.
So, if you had to choose just one of these primary color palettes - with any bead type - which would it be?

Touching base...
So... it's been a crazy past seven days. Busy, busy, busy! Lots of laughter and a couple hissy fits from the kids (...okay, fine, they were from me - I'm not a morning person), but I had an all-around fun time with my niece and nephew. I'll be home later on today, but I've gone ahead and reopened the shop right now. As for my Week 13 post, give me a couple days?

My favorite location in Paris was at the Eiffel Tower and Rob and I made it a point to get there at some point each and every day that we were in Paris. In this video I show myself touching the base of the Eiffel Tower along with a little bit of the ponds with ducks right next to it. August 26, 1999.
