I love everything about
this couple, their fabulously cute {click to read} story, their
amazing chemistry, their jaunt along the Hudson River and through
Greenwich Village. I love it all. The shoot really tells such a
warm and cozy tale about being young and in love in New York.
About the
photographer: Betsy Van Langen grew up as somewhat of a paparazzi
within her home, yet didn't take her first photography class until
she was an undergraduate at Loyola College in Maryland. After
graduating in 2008 with a degree in Fine Arts, she attended the
Post Baccalaureate Program at Maryland Institute College of Art.
She is currently getting her Masters in Photography at Rutgers
University. Her fine arts background allows her to mix creative and
stylistic elements with timeless and classic imagery... As a kid,
she always wanted to created pictures that people would keep and
love forever. Now she does just that.

When we started to think about all the places where we could get
married, the list seemed almost endless. There were so many
things to consider, that we almost didnt know where to start.
So, while Lance enjoyed a Christmas cruise with his parents,
Laura sat down in her moms living room and started making a
spreadsheet. The categories included: hotel name/brand, location,
wedding features (
see previous post), hotel features, cost of
rooms, activities, ease of reaching the country and various other
notes.

We
already knew that we wanted our wedding to be on or near the
beach, so that pretty much narrowed our focus to areas south of
Florida. We also knew we wanted a wedding that we could customize
and love but that would be somewhat affordable. So Laura began
the tedious process of combing through websites, perusing
TripAdvisor, emailing the on-site wedding coordinators and
sending away for every brochure she could get her hands on in
order to find the perfect balance. A brief list of locations we
considered: Viva Wyndham Fortuna Beach, the Atlantis, British
Colonial Inn, Wyndham Sunshine Suites-Grand Cayman, Wyndham
Condado Plaza, Westin St. John, Frenchmans Reef and Morning Star
Marriott Beach Resort, and the list went on
Slowly, some hotels seemed to eliminate themselves. Ones that
were located in town and away from the beach were the first to
go, followed by ones with horrendous reviews and those over
$300/night (not all-inclusive). Lauras mom vetoed the Dominican
Republic, and she focused on finding a place that we and most of
our guests had not been before. When we realized that it was $800
to get to Grand Cayman from Denver (where many of our guests were
coming from), that fell off the list too. The presence of good
diving became a big factor, as did the wedding coordinators who
would not respond or confused us with other people NOT the kind
of coordinators to whom we wanted to entrust my wedding.
As some hotels were eliminated, one began to rise to the top.
Since we knew we wouldnt be able to visit the hotel before we
signed a contract, we wanted to select one that had a very good
chance of being appropriately nice, and the Westin/Sheraton Our
Lucaya fit the bill. It was also across the street from a great
dive shop and other activities, and it was right on the beach.
Though the hotel wedding coordinators were unresponsive, we found
an independent planner who was great and offered everything we
wanted. Even with a smallish wedding, we would still be able to
have a private reception, and there was a salon and spa at the
resort. Plus, no one in our group had spent much time in the
Bahamas. It also didnt hurt that it was close (only 50 miles off
the Florida coast), reasonable to get there and stay there, and
it was BEAUTIFUL.

I'm one of those
creative type-A personalities that awakes with an idea at 4 am and
stirs for hours just thinking about the details. For example, last
night I found myself in deep thought about the below Vargas Girl
print. It's been hanging in my powder room for months, but suddenly
I was intrigued by the playfulness of her coquette-like pink corset
and black satin bow. Before long it inspired this "feminine meets
film noir" inspiration board of soft blush and bold black for the
retro-glamorous bride.

It's funny because I often tell brides who are struggling with
their wedding style or colors to buy a pocket journal and jot down
things that inspire them throughout the day. Most times their
personal style is hiding all around them in the things they've
collected, purchased or surrounded themselves with. Well, if this
isn't testament to my own words, I'm not sure what is. Hope you
enjoy!

Whenever we are styling brides, we often turn to the beautiful work
of
Twigs & Honey. Owner and designer Myra Callan
always amazes us with a constantly evolving array of creative,
whimsical and romantic pieces... There's truly something to suit
the taste of every girl we work with.
Today I'm thrilled to share a few gorgeous items from Myra's latest
campaign, as well our recent, in-depth conversation. After a quick
glimpse at the beautiful images below, it's easy to see that
Twigs
& Honey is something special. So to sweeten the pot a bit,
we asked Myra about the development of her line, her daily muses
and inspirations, and how the whole creative concept came to
fruition. I'm always so intrigued by the "how you got there"
questions - and I think you will love her answers.
How do you believe the
Twigs & Honey concept came to fruition?
I grew up in Oregon and was smitten with wildlife and nature from
the beginning. I ended up pursuing an educational path that would
foster these interests. I suppose Id always liked pretty little
things and fashion as well and my two different major interests in
life came to a head while planning my 9-8-7 wedding to now hubby,
Matt. After the wedding, I was still on such a creative high that I
didnt want to let that completely go and creating
Twigs &
Honey really allowed me to never let it go!
Can you share some
tidbits about your daily life?
I like running, yes like it, but I dont have much time lately for
that. I love going to the movies and the bookstore with my hubby. I
enjoy gardening and playing with our Siberian husky, Indy. I also
go out with family for some stress relieving target shooting from
time to time {Im sure thats a surprise!}. My favorite movie of
all-time is Labyrinth, though the recent Inception is a close
second. Ive also seen every episode of The Office at least once,
emphasis on at least...
What inspired
you to develop your brand?
I was inspired to develop Twigs & Honey by the enjoyment I
received through creating pieces. I loved the idea of creating
little bits of art you could wear and sharing it with the world. I
also loved providing pieces for individuals wanting something
unique and lovely.
What was missing in the
market that Twigs & Honey fulfills?
When I first began my Etsy shop in January of 2008, there werent a
ton of head piece makers on Etsy and Etsy itself wasnt that old. I
literally did an extensive search through the site to make sure
that what I was creating was going to be new, fresh and original
and not just what was already being done. After that, I wanted to
provide a line of products that would be vintage and nature
inspired but completely modern interpretations focusing on fine
materials and craftsmanship. As time went on and more and more
people started to jump on the head piece making bandwagon, I kept
moving my brand into one that focused on technique and uniqueness.
Most of my flowers (with the exception of some small vintage and
reproduction vintage flowers) are completely made from scratch.
Most of my pieces are hand sewn with good old needle and thread. I
dont even own a hot glue gun. I wanted to provide a product to
the market that was lovely, stylish, unique and well-made and
thats about it!
What initially sparked
the Twigs & Honey concept?
I began making small hair accessories in junior high because
something always fascinated me about hair pretties and being 13, I
couldnt afford any from the store. I kept it as a hobby for years
and for our 2007 wedding, I decided to DIY my hair piece and those
of my bridesmaids (along with the boutonnieres and bouquets). I
received a very positive response from friends and family and loved
creating them so much that I decided to launch a little Etsy shop
in January of 2008. After I made a sale in the first few days, I
was hooked and things took off from there.
What do you
like most about your job?
Twigs & Honey gives me a creative outlet. I am a busy body and
I have so many ideas bursting out of my head that Twigs & Honey
really gives me an arena to let all that creative energy out into
the world. I love that everyday is different. Most days are crammed
with work from the early morning into the late night and right
through the weekends, but it doesnt feel like work since its
really a passion. I also love all the talented and sweet people I
get to work with and meet. I feel very lucky!
Where to you draw
everyday inspiration from?
I draw inspiration from just
about everywhere. More objectively, I gather a ton of inspiration
every morning from my favorite blogs. More abstractly, I gather
inspiration from the world around me. I love the environment and
studied it for years so its hard not to have that influence my
designs. A couple times a month or more, I dive into a stack of
magazines at the bookstore and I love great wardrobe in movies and
runway fashion. I like looking at high fashion dresses and blouses
and then thinking to myself, How can I make that into a head
piece?
Why should we
tell Merci New York's readers to buy your {oh-so-pretty}
products?
Twigs & Honey pieces are designed for individuals wanting an
extra special something to complete their look, whether it is a
bridal look or an everyday outfit. The pieces are handmade with
love, care and attention to detail and we use the finest materials
and vintage findings.
Where did your company
begin? Where is it located now? Where are your products
sold?
Twigs & Honey, LLC made its humble beginning in Keizer, Oregon
in an apartment with a lakeside view! It is now located in our home
studio in Salem, Oregon. Our products are sold in our online
stores:
shop.twigsandhoney.com &
myrakim.etsy.com.
They are also sold at
The English Dept. in Portland, Oregon,
Lovely
Bridal Shop in NYC, and

Bridesmaids boutiques nationwide.
You can keep up with Twigs and Honey news on our

Title: Marcel Dadi's PRINCESS. World's Most
Valuable Guitar?
Princess guitar was designed and owned by French legendary
guitarist Marcel Dadi, who passed away in TWA crash in 1996. This
timeless piece of archtop guitar sculpture was finished in 1989
by french top-luthier Frank Cheval with incomparable attention to
detail. As you maybe know, Marcel had a wonderfully close
relationship with Chet Atkins, and was the first non-American to
be honored by the Country Music Hall of Fame. For its combination
of workmanship and identity, this guitar ranks amongst the most
valuable guitars available today.

Selecting your destination wedding photographer is one of the
most important decisions you can make. Theres no do overs on
your wedding photos. And, unlike catering, theres less margin
for error. So, you really only have one shot of getting it
right.
Adding to the complexity, chances are very good that you wont
find the resident talent that you are looking for in the wedding
destination of your choice. Weve blogged on this before in
Covering The Basics Photographer, but you
should count on hiring and bringing your own photographer with
you.
Today on WeddingBee, Joe Milton of the International Society of
Professional Wedding Photographers has an interesting posting on
Top Five Questions to Ask Your Photographer.
Now, one thing weve learned is that there are more wedding
photography associations than you can shake a stick at. Some
reputable, some not so do your homework.
But Joe Milton poses some very good questions (these are his
questions, but our commentary):
- Can I read through the contract? If not, run far and fast.
The contract should be clear and articulate what is expected of
both parties
including deadlines! Photographers are notorious for
getting you to sign the contract and then take FOREVER to deliver
the goods.
- Can I see some sample albums of complete weddings? If not,
run far and fast. Every photographer can get a good picture or
two, but you want to see the whole process. Any good photographer
should be able to show you lots of quality work.
- How much experience do you have? The more weddings theyve
done, but the better they will probably be. This is crucial in
destination weddings as many native photographers are just
Sunday afternoon amateurs. You want a pro.
- How much direction or posing do you do during the day? Some
photographers are photojournalist only. Some only do posed shots.
For us, we liked the mix. Of our favorites, they were posed. Or
rather, our photographer gave direction (walk up this staircase,
walk down the beach this way) and then she captured the moment.
Those were our favorites. But some of the most meaningful
moments were the candids (the brides grandmother walking her
down the aisle because she is now paralyzed).
- Do you have insurance? Any decent photographer will, so this
is not the definitive question that many might think.
This is a good list. But after reading it, the questions seem
very elementary. They will only help you rule bad apples and
will do nothing to help you select from a small pool of 3-5 truly
professional photographers. To this rather basic list, we have
added our own list of must ask questions:
-
- Can I speak with a couple whos wedding you have shot in the
last six months? If a photographer is unable or unwilling to
provide a list of references for you to check out, this is a
problem. It also surprised us that this should be in the bag
for the photographer. Yet, we had photographers provide us with
references that were negative, so its worth going through the
process.
-
- How much experience do you have with the location/venue/type
that I having? - No wedding photographer will have done exactly
what you are doing, but have they done something similar? If they
havent done a Jewish ceremony or a beach wedding, it might be a
problem for you.
-
- What is your typical method? In our professional capacity,
we both hire a lot of vendors. We are a big fan of asking very
broad, open-ended questions like this. It gets the photographer
talking about his/her work broadly. The good ones should be able
to string together a story that makes sense. Those new to the
business or who are weekend warriors will stumble on this kind
of broad, open-ended question.
-
- Do you bring an assistant? This is useful to know. Will
they be doing all the work themselves, or farming it out? If
bringing an assistant, try to get a clear picture on what that
persons role may be. And remember, this will also increase your
cost factors.
-
- How many different cameras do you bring? In other words,
will they be switching back and forth and might miss the moment.
Or, will they have back-up with them in case something goes
wrong? Its important.
-
- Film vs digital? In this age of digital everything, there
are some photographers that sill do film (believe it or not). So
ask.
-
- How long before we see proofs? This is self explanatory.
-
- How long before we get our actual album? Also self
explanatory.
-
- Who covers your expenses? This is a point of negotiation.
Ideally, its better for both you and photographer if you cover
the expenses. Its better for the photographer because they are
not out of pocket on anything. Its better for you because the
photographer will probably charge a mark-up fee (some percentage
of the actual cost; so a $700 airline ticket to the Bahamas
marked up 15% will actually cost you $805).
-
- What is your mark-up fee (both for out of pocket travel and
also for stock/equipment)? The photographer should be
absolutely honest about this up front. In our experience, too
many photographers use this as a back end profit center and you
have no idea how bad you will get hit until the final bill
arrives.
Finally, its not a question, but its worth stating: actually
meet with your photographer once or twice before the wedding. It
sounds obvious, but many couples have been known to hire a
photographer sight unseen because they found them on some website
and their work looked good. This is especially common where
destination wedding photographers can live all over the country
and fly into the wedding. Try to find a way to meet first and
take a temperature check.

Title: Choose Your Weapon - The Fight Glove
Revolution
As Everlast reaches it's 100 year anniversary in 2010, it is
imperative that we continue to serve as the premier brand in the
boxing arena. In September 2009, we will launch three (3) new
fight gloves (The MX, 1910, and Protex 3), marking the first time
in our brands history that we will be providing fighters with a
choice of fight gloves. "Choose your Weapon" is a marketing and
product campaign that encourages the boxer to explore their fight
glove options in order to select the right glove that compliments
their individual fighting style and physical attributes.
The attached video is a look through the fighters eyes on the
perception of their hands, as well as the emotional and physical
requirements that go into selecting right fight gloves. The
fighters view is complimented by insight on the design origin,
construction, and performance characteristics of each glove by
the Everlast product Team.
No other brand on the market offers the fighter a choice, and
thus it is imperative as the market leader in product and
innovation that Everlast remain the Choice of Champions.

If 'change' is on your mind then let's change our thoughts when it
comes to picking a luxurious engagement ring.

Fall madly in love with
Tanzanite,
an amazing and rare African gemstone radiating a kaleidoscope of
velvet blue, sensual violet, intense indigo, lilac and periwinkle
from every facet. Your engagement ring will be like no other
because it is rare to find two Tanzanite stones of identical color.

Tanzanite
was introduced by Tiffany & Co. in 1968 who declared it 'the
most beautiful blue stone discovered in over 2 000 years and 1000
times rarer than diamonds." Imagine dancing the night away in this
evening shoe designed by Stuart Weitzman and Le Vian Jeweler who
combined 185 carats of tanzanite and 28 carats of diamonds. Yours
for a mere 2 million USD. Christopher Greig for
Charles Greig
Jewellery designed these luxurious engagement rings.
Now...doesn't this give new meaning to 'getting the blues'!

Its another bachelorette party dressing up, wearing the mock
veil, getting drunk, going bar hopping and feeling bad the next
day. But thats not what you want for your bachelorette party.
You want different. You want fun. Sure you want to drink, but
dont want to get out of control. You want the kind of
bachelorette party where you can take your mom and your
16-year-old niece. And did we say you want to have fun?
Try this on for size: Cooking School. Its not some stodgy
cooking school, were talking fun, wine and fantastic food
youve cooked yourself. You bring the girlfriends, they provide
the chef to teach you and the food to prepare. Its a blast
(and you even get to keep the apron).
Were in love with the
Viking
Cooking School. For a bachelorette or bridal party, contact
them directly for a
Special Events Program.
Weve done it several times and absolutely love it. Weve taken
the Basic Knife Skills class and the Date Night Lobster
Bisque and Steak. Were already booked into the Indian Dinner
for the spring.

Title: Bachelorette Party!
Girls Night Out is great for bachelorette parties, birthday
parties, or any girls night out!

As many of you probably know, last Friday was Fashion's Night Out,
a celebration to kick off Fashion Week, and a spectacle that is
starting to rival Halloween and New Year's Eve as the most
craze-inducing event in New York City.
Being the committed blogger I am {insert pat on back here}, I
braved the crosstown city gridlock to see the sights and scour some
great finds... but I didn't go the bridal route. I'm sure you'll
find a ton of scoop on the wedding-related parties elsewhere, so I
{indulgently} scooped out some other stores...

Fruitful of most was my
stint around all nine floors of Barney's {phew!}, where I met with
one of my all-time favorite style icons, Simon Doonan.
Simon is to me what Justin Bieber is to 13 year old girls... so
needless to say, I was a bit shy... But did I leave empty handed?
No! I bring you FNO Style
Find No. 1... The witty Mr. Doonan's recent collaboration with
Dempsey
+ Carroll.

Simon has designed some
absolutely delectable stationery with the venerable paper house,
and the results suit the city bride wonderfully. Rather than
sending a stodgy "thank you" to your fashionista bridesmaids for
throwing your
tres-chic
shower, you can return the favor with a little piece of taste,
luxury and humor via these individually branded cards engraved with
Simon Doonan's clever witticisms.

The set of 10
multi-colored cards come with four signature Simon sayings, as well
as one fill-in-the-blank card, for your own creative genius. The
results can be just as witty, {or just as silly}, as the card Simon
filled out for me.
Simon Doonan stationery
collection, $50 for a set of ten at Dempsey &
Carroll or Barneys New York.

Bridal market may have come and gone, but
Sarantina's stunning silhouettes will soon hit shops
{this January, to be exact} and ladies, are you in for a treat. We
often suggest the Sarantina collection to the New York bride who
wants to add a bit of drama to her big day. The line is always
inventive, with wonderfully feminine accents like big bows, silk
organza rosettes and empire waistlines with voluminous
skirts...

I had the pleasure of
viewing the
Sarantina runway presentation at Market... The mood,
the music, the gowns {the ruffles, the ice blue accents}... it's
all so utterly
delectable.
I suppose I can't sit here swooning unless I let you in on a little
action.
Take your front row seat to "The Softer Side of New York" runway
show above and let me know what you think...
I have to say, I'm pretty gaga over the first dress on top, {I love
the pairing of an asymmetrical neckline and textured skirt}! And if
you saw my
style trend picks on Fashionable Bride this
week, then you already know how much
j'adore jeweled-tone wedding shoes!
