(More customer reviews)I'm reviewing the National Geographic Ski Master Watch, NG702GKSY. This is not the hiking watch, it is the Ski model with the yellow band. The NG702GKSK is the same watch with a black band.
Ergonomically, yes, this is a big watch, and it has a stainless steel case, so it is heavy. The weight is definitely noticeable at first, but I rapidly became accustomed to it. Because the wrist band flows smoothly into the shape of the case, this helps to reduce the visual sense of the size. On the down side, the watch won't take aftermarket bands.
The watch packs a lot of functionality. In addition to the usual watch functions, two time zones, timer, chronometer, alarm, the watch has pressure (barometer/altimeter), compass, and temperature sensors.
In this model, the altimeter function feeds into a "ski log" database. In ski mode, the watch senses the beginning and end of a descent, and keeps records for each as a "lap".
If you manually enter the slope of the run, the watch calculates maximum and average descent speeds for each lap. Unfortunately, where I ski, this slope information is not readily available.
The watch provides the following data for each lap:
Start time, descent time, max speed, average speed, highest altitude, lowest altitude, altitude change, and a graph of descent altitude vs time.
It also can provide a summary of your laps:
Date, start time, total travel period, number of laps, total descent time, accumulated descent altitude change, accumulated ascent, max speed, highest altitude, lowest altitude, slope.
While these are interesting bits of data to the most avid skier, there are other models of National Geographic watches that have the same basic styling, but are designed for hikers, such as the NG701GKSU (black) and NG701GKSR (dark gray), that may be more appropriate for the "average" watch buyer. As an added bonus, those watches have bands that match the case color.
Comparison to the Casio Pathfinder
Relative to the Casio Pathfinder watch, which also has triple sensors, the National Geographic watches seem more sturdily built, and, to my eye, they offer a more pleasing look thanks to the band that flows into the lines of the case. The display uses light lettering on a dark background. This is not as visible as the more typical dark lettering on a light background found on the Casio. The backlight of the Ski Master is anemic. It allows the watch to be used in near or total darkness, but offers very little help in normal lighting conditions.
Summary:
4 out of 5 stars. Great functionality, good style (if you like a yellow wrist band, otherwise go for the GKSK version), and well built. But the somewhat difficult to read display and almost worthless backlight prevent me from giving it 5 stars.

(More customer reviews)It does what I bought it for, and it does it well, so it gets 3 stars. I bought this watch so I could wear earplugs and still wake up to an alarm.
However, the design is not elegant. As one other reviewer noted (possibly for the vibralite 3), it is way too easy to turn the vibrate feature off - a single button changes between vibrate/beep/silence modes. However, it doesn't seem like I can accidently hit this button, so it is forgivable, though worrying.
An example of the rough design is function of the button that changes vibrate/beep/silence modes. It has four settings: beep, vibrate, beep&vibrate, and off. When cycling through these modes, the watch vibrates & beeps for vibrate & beep mode, BUT ONLY WHEN TURNING THIS MODE OFF! It would make sense (and I believe this was the intention of the designers) if when you turn on vibrate mode, it vibrates to confirm this. But it only vibrates to confirm that you have just turned vibrate mode OFF. Fortunately, there is a visual indicator to indicate the mode, so this is only disappointing, and not disastrous.
There are other annoying things that standard digital watches have had right for many years, like:
After using a different function (like stopwatch), mode button takes you right back to time display.
When I turn on the light, it turns off as soon as I press any button - so forget about trying to set the watch in the dark - EVERY button turns the light off.
I'm guess they were first to market with this concept, because I couldn't find any competitors at all.
Bottom line, without competition, I would still buy this watch.

(More customer reviews)Great watch with many great features. I love the size of the digital layout and the metal band is durable. To resize the band, push out the pins from the side that looks like screws.
Pros: Accurate, good looking, multiple alarms, timer, and stop-watch.
Cons: Metal band latch sometimes deforms, making it hard to latch. You have to bend it a certain way to make it work. The analog hands sometimes get out of sync with the digital time. You can fix that easily, but annoying sometimes. Lastly, at night you can't use the watch features. There is a light, but it occupies a button used for setting alarms and such. So if you are setting your alarm, you can't see the display. Timex has a night feature that, once enabled, turns the light on with every button press. My former watch had it and it was a very handy feature.
Great for the price.

The good: it needs no batteries, the dial seems clear, you can set a second time-zone for the bottom LCD display. The bad: resin band looks like it might need to be replaced in a year or so of average use, no moving second hand on the display.
Setting the digital time will cause the analog display to reset to the new digital time. You can set a second time zone on the LCD display if you wish.

I wanted another affordable watch, without a steel or titanium bracelet, that could be worn in a casual, sporty and dress-up environment. When I came across Casio's new line, Edifice, I found the watch I was looking for. With the world time, dual time zone, alarm and solar function, there is little more that you could want from an analog watch. I didn't experience the difficulty in setting up the watch that other reviewers mentioned, but as the owner of many watches, I have had to set up watches before with many complications and knew my way around. Follow the instructions and you should be fine. The great thing about perpetual date watches like this is that once the watch is set, there is no need to change it. I have also not experienced any modification of the time or function simply by wearing it.
If you are looking for a watch that can really take a beating indoors or out, this is probably not what you are looking for and is not a substitute for a G-Shock. Instead, consider this watch if you are looking for an affordable, functional, cool-looking timepiece.

(More customer reviews)I purchased the 7 mm version of this band in May as a replacement for a Timex watch I have. It fit my wrist and looked great for the first few weeks, then the leather started peeling apart. The inside layer appears to be cardboard or something like it covered with thin outer layers of leather. One of the loops also became detached within the first 2 months. After 3 months, the band was held together by glue (I tried to repair it twice), but it finally fell completely apart in late August - only 3 months old! I don't do anything that should stress a watch band such as getting it wet. In general I wear it all the time and only take it off when it might get wet. The original leather band which came with the Timex lasted 1 1/2 years under the same conditions. This is not a good quality band for a watch you wear all the time.

(More customer reviews)I bought this to replace a non-solar Timex Ironman Triathlon Timex Men's Ironman Triathlon 42-Lap Combo Dual Tech Dress Watch #T56381 that looks simiar, but there are actually a number of differences. First, of course, this is a Solar watch, which I wanted because battery changing is both a hassle, and a potential source of future problems. This watch is much lighter and less clunky than the older Ani-Digi Timex Ironman models, and the band is also lighter and more comfortable. (However, it is not obvious that this band can be changed if needed -- It seems to be integrated with the watch).
The digital numbers are clear, but not quite as distinct as in the pictures (and not as bold as on the older Timex models). The feature set is good: Stop watch with 50 laps, Count down timer, 3 alarms, 3 time zones, and you can have the watch skip modes that you don't use.
Time keeping has been extremely accurate thus far (I've only had it a few days.) This is one of the least expensive solar watches available.
I purchased from ProSports and it was received within 3 business days - fast shipping. Worth noting -- for $5 you can extend the 1-year warranty to 5-years directly with Timex; this is cheap enough that it may be worth it.

This is the perfect size, and the simple white/silver style makes it dressy enough to wear to the office on a daily basis. It's also easy to read the display even though it's not the layout I'm use to. My only complaint is that the display appears somewhat dim - that could just mean the battery's low though.

I bought several of these from DBROTH, but what I received was the regular length version.
The band was about 1" shorter than the Speidel 18 mm Long band it was ordered to replace.
This is from Speidel, which makes great watch bands, but if you want the Long(er) length band look somewhere else.

I have owned a Timex Ironman since 1993, when I purchased my first one during Army Basic at Fort Benning, Georgia and always thought they were great watches. Most of the time the wrist strap gave out after 3 or 4 years and I would buy a new one because I could not readily obtain a new, Timex band. I use the watch to swim and run, and purchased the solar watch because it was functional and the wrist band was sturdy; and no battery. I purchased it in August 2008 and it gave out this week (April 19, 2009): hit one button, the screen blanked and reset. Hit another and the clock stopped. I thought it might have been water damage so I let it dry out; although the casing appeared intact and no moisture appeared in the crystal. Then the solar cell discharged to empty. The watch continues to reset and I am very frustrated. For my work, the watch was perfect in almost every way. But if it gives out after six months I am not going to buy another if the pattern repeats.

It is very easy to use and has lots of great features: 2 time zones, day, date, seconds, countdown timer, stopwatch and multiple alarms including an hourly beep if you want one. You can swim with it down to 100 meters. The hands, and marks corresponding to the numbers, glow in the dark but it also has a light that illuminates the face when you press a button. The metal band has a great feature that keeps it secure so the clasp won't pop open like other metal bands I've had. With all these features it offers great value for the price and it looks really cool.
