The popular uprising in Egypt has exposed, for all to see, the
hypocrisy and delusion of the US leaders and the embedded foreign
policy that they are defending. When news of the protests first hit
the air, the consensus view was that Mubarak was a good man and
exUK Prime Minister Tony Blair is still saying it! and when
pressed, US vice president Biden claimed Mubarak was not a dictator
at all.Since then the US and EU governments have been playing a
game of catchup trying to pitch their lines more in keeping with
the events on the ground.Suddenly, Obama cares for the freedoms of
Egyptians, even though Mubarak has been oppressing them for 30
years with US funding and support. And what this exposes is the
hypocrisy of the US and Western worlds stated belief in freedom,
when what is really going on is simply business as usual in
implementing the USs foreign policy interests.Of course the US and
other Western governments no doubt have interests to defend, but to
cloak them in the respectable mantra of freedom only serves to make
such governments the object of scorn in those countries where such
interests are to be got by subjugating the local population via
installed puppet rulers.Truth is, the US has funded bribed and
supported the Mubarak regime in order to support Israel via the
Peace Treaty between Egypt and Israel and to further USIsraeli
interests in the Middle East. Now all this is grist for the mill
where states are concerned, and no one should be surprised by it.
But what sticks in peoples throats is when all this is carried out
in the name of freedom by a country that is constantly harping on
about how its the freest in the world and how its moral global
mission is the spreading of freedom. Now, Im first to agree that
Americas founding document emThe Declaration of Independence em is
a worldfirst, and massively inspiring political document and
testament to freedom. Trouble is, the US government today is far
removed from its founding principles, and has completely lost its
way on the freedom road. So to be preaching freedom to the rest of
the world, while actively suppressing it wherever it can, reeks of
the hypocrisy that is responsible for Americas decline as a
universally admired nation.Recent events in Egypt have also exposed
the leaders of failing states yes, they are all failing in one way
or another as being complete idiots in knowing what is really going
on. Now that they get it, and are supporting freedom for Egyptians,
the obvious next question is emWhat about other US client regimes
in the region with similar grievances What about Saudi Arabia,
Jordan and othersemIf it was right to be supporting Mubarak right
up until a few days ago even though nothing had changed regards
Mubarak and his willingness to support US foreign interests then
who is the next US client regime leader to be abandoned in like
mannerIf US foreign policy was actually emmoralem really in support
of freedom around the world then there would be no need to change
it on the fly, in an attempt to square it with everchanging events
on the ground. What is happening in Egypt, however it turns out, is
serving notice on the US and its foreign policy interests that it
must either shape up and actually be a force for freedom in the
world, or simply admit its an amoral empire and take the
consequences.
