In the seo world there have been two very big stories in the past month involving two very large companies. The first was JC Penny’s  it seems that there seo company ( according to JC penny without their knowledge) was purchasing high PR backlinks for them , I will explain what this does for a websites seo in a moment. These high pr backlinks was able to put JC penny at the top of the search engines for a wide variety of keywords through the lucrative Christmas shopping season. Since JC Penny has fired their seo company ( it wasn’t us) and is incurring a 3 month penalty from google in the form of lower search engine rankings.

Okay lets break this down and explain exactly what was going on. If you have been reading my blog for any length of time or are one of my clients you already know how important it is to have anchored high pr back links pointing at your site. Most seo companies will look for blogs and try to post on them or use forum profiles from high pr blogs to try and rank a site. The way JC penny’s got caught was by an article from the NY Times  that exposed there link networks.

JC penny was not the only one in trouble with Google in Feb. Overstock got caught up in it’s own little scandal involving .edu links. To the best of my knowledge what they were doing is offering college students discounts on products to post links to overstock products. So College students got big discounts while Overstock received highly sought after .edu links which helped them rank in the search engines.

New Study Businesses increasing Online marketing Spending For 2011

In a Vista print study of home-based business it was discovered that a large percentage of them plan to expand their social media marketing through out the first 3 quarters of 2011 The survey was conducted during Jan and Feb where Vista Print surveyed small home-based businesses , the findings found 40% of the businesses surveyed said that had intentions to expand their social media presence While another 34% said the have intentions to expand at a large rate their social media marketing as soon as the first quarter of 2011

These stats are taken from a blog post on the vista print website that was about home-based businesses optimism for the first 2 quarters of 2011.

Here is the most important point of the entire survey , that small business should really pay attention too 88% of everyone surveyed claimed that they are planning on spend more on internet marketing as a whole in 2011 than they did in 2010. The major theme when asked what they would spend the extra money on was enhancing the visibility of their website.

So why am i bringing this up , and as hard as it is to believe it is not for self promotion, this survey shows that businesses are become more internet market savy. Business owners are realizing that it takes more than just having a website to get new customers from the internet , it takes promotion and they are becoming more willing to spend money on this .
