GREAT Cupcakes Cookbook Review

GREATCupcakesCookbook
Average Reviews:

Finally! Gluten-Free Cupcakes that taste real! What we like so much about this cupcake cookbook is the creative recipes. Some we've never heard of that are absolutely delicious and fun like the Macapuno Surprise Cupcakes, Sweet Bean Paste Cupcakes (one booboo that we sure are glad got into the cookbook as the cookbook says no bean - we think it's supposed to mean no bean flour.) and Bubble Tea/Boba cupcakes. The Chocolate Lava Cake-Cups tastes just like the real cake and the Chocolate Pea-Not Butter Brownie Cupcakes are rich and delicious. We can't leave out the basics. The chocolate and vanilla cupcakes are just what you'd want out of a cupcake. This cookbook would make a great gift and it should be a staple for anyone with Celiac, food allergies and other ailments. I hear through the grapevine that a sugar-free version is due out in June. Can't wait! Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! For making this cookbook.

Grab A Bag and A Crock Pot Cookbook Review

GrabABagandACrockPotCookbook
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Frances Barrineau, one of the great home cooks of the East, comes back with another winner after her adventuresome Grab a Bag cookbooks, and here she has added a welcome twist, throwing a crockpot into the mix instead of relying on mere bags as she did for her two previous best sellers. As Barrineau points out, the crockpot is not everyone's friend, but if your family is forgiving enough to grant you mercy for the crockkpot mistakes you're bound to make, then you're ahead of the game.
She warns that dairy products don't work well in the sturdy pot du crock, but otherwise you will be able to adapt freely your favorite recipes to fit the convenience of this modern, yet strangely ancient appliance. My mother used to tell me, based on her studies in anthropology with Ruth Benedict and Margaret Mead, that if you take the average kitchen in the US, probably the most ancient and time honoured thing in it will be the humble crockpot. Remember when they were made of terra cotta and looked like flowerpots? My mother did, and Margaret Mead too.
Barrineau's recipes are tasty, nutritious, and so easy to make you;ll be kicking yourself for having exiled your crockpot to the dust back of the kitchen shelves. College boys who have never done anything in the way of cooking will love this boo, it's durable, takes a lot of abuse, and is written in simple, colorful English, and it gives a handy chart of spices and tells you ahead of time what they will taste like--everything from nutmeg, and ginger, to that mysterious "apple pie spice" that children love--coeds too. If you are in the dark about what "grab a bag" means, just think of going to the supermarket or the local produce mart, grabbing a bag, filling it with edibles, and then assembling the dry ingredients in your crockpot, saving the wet ones until you're on your hike or camping trip, or perhaps an intimate supper for "the two of you." Afterwards, you'll have enough for a lunch the next day with several friends, or just by yourself alone in the busy cafeteria.
My mother always said, you're never alone when you've got your crockpot nearby, and Barrineau will help you over the bumps of first cooking with it--of first love I had almost said.
That other reviewer who disliked this book wasn't very kind! But ignore me at your peril, potential buyer (and crockpot user).

Crockpot recipes that begin in a bag with the dry ingredients and are completed later with the liquid ingredients when ready to be prepared. Crockpot recipes that begin in a bag with the dry ingredients and are completed later with the liquid ingredients when ready to be prepared. This book will appeal to a great number of people of different ages and different life styles. This book plus a crockpot, is a great idea for college students as well as empty nesters and yet, it also appeals to young working mothers with very little time or bachelors with very little cooking talent. It works well for week-end campers and recreational vehicle travelers because the bags can be made in advance and the crockpot takes up very little space. The ingredients needed can be bought at the destination point because the items are not hard to find. The recipes are easy and self- explanatory and many are meals in a pot. Sometimes there will be leftovers for lunch the next day. They are also very tasty and nutritious. This is Francis Barrineau's third book.

I've never done this-write a review. But someone gave this book only 2 stars, and that really bothers me. The author's other baking books, now almost impossible to find, were very highly rated, and rightly, and this one is the best of them all-and comprehensive.
Oh, yes, there are a few ingredients you'll need to buy at a health food store. BUT, well worth the trip.
Bake up a batch of her wonderful muffins, and watch your kids devour them as mine did. I made a batch of the apple pecan, by choice, to start my family off on a cross-country trip-they are special.
The cookies are unbelievable. The baked goods too.
There are many ideas for substitutions, and many ideas for those special needs-like diabetes, coronary artery disease, allergies (the wheat-free, egg-free, sugar-free, low-fat, etc.) AND everything not only tastes good, but also is good for you, loaded with nuts, seeds, whole grains, fruits, vegetables....
Easy to follow instructions, flawless recipes. Delicious results, for those of us who don't eat white bread. For those who do, expand your horizons.
Really, this book is a stand out in health-oriented baking-I should know, I've bought them all. I can promise you two things: one, you will not like every recipe, some you won't even try; and two, you will love most of the recipes and find yourself making them again and again.

Having seen a profile of the restaurant and its owner on national t.v. some time ago, I was eager to visit this place and taste what everyone was raving about. Now that we've taken that maiden trip, are we glad we did! The recipes in the book include every kind of yummy breakfast treat you can imagine. (The coconut and chocolate chip Peter Paul Pancakes are my fave!) If you have the time and patience to fuss over breakfast and don't just want to grab an apple and cup of coffee as you race out the door, this is a great way to enjoy Breakfast as a main meal of the day, and treat your family to something special too. The recipes are straightforward and easy to follow. The author (who is also the restaurant owner)has a friendly and easy to read style and it makes the cookbook more than just a step by step instructional. If you are ever in New York City, stop by this place on the Upper East Side and see for yourself why Carrie Levin has earned such a great reputation in her business.

Children With Starving Brains: A Medical Treatment Guide for Autism Spectrum Disorder Review

ChildrenWithStarvingBrains:AMedicalTreatmentGuideforAutismSpectrumDisorder
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Please do yourself, your child, or your patients the monumental favor of reading, living, and practicing this book. Children with Starving Brains is an easy to read and comprehensive guide to the painfully complex issues surounding the causation, gastrointestinal pathology, toxicity, and evaluation process of working with children with Austism Spectrum Disorders.
The book then deals extensively with the steps involved in healing the injuries. Dr. McCandless walks the reader through gastrointestinal healing measures, removing heavy metals, restoring proper immune function, and healing the STARVING brain.
You will shake your head in amazement both at the amount of helpful and hopeful information in this book, as well as in absolute awe at the lack of comprehension that most medical, dental, and nursing practitioners have concerning the contemporary state of causation, pathology, and treatment of Autism Spectrum Disorders.
I work in a practice that has successfully treated almost 100 children utilizing the principles outlined by Dr. McCandless. All the children have improved to varying degrees. Some have almost totally "recovered", others have shown islands of significant improvement, but ALL have responded positively.
This is good, progressive, modern health care. It is not "alternative" treatment. It is correct treatment to address an acute illness or "insult" to a child's entire brain, body, and self. These interventions have also proven tremendously helpful in our treatment of 200 adults with Autism Spectrum Disorders.
I especially appeal to my nursing colleagues: READ THIS BOOK. In so many situations, We are the professionals advising mothers about conception and prenatal care; administering immunizations; counseling parents about the use of antibiotics; teaching about dental care; providing care in pediatrician's offices, or in our own pediatric, psychiatric, and general health care practices. If we do not avail ourselves of this information, we are part of the problem, and NOT part of the answer. If we are ignorant of the issues surrounding vulnerbility and causation, we are directly contributing to the epidemic of Autism Spectrum Disorders.
In the future, we will look back on the pioneering work of Jaquelyn McCandless, and her colleagues such as Teresa Binstock, and the innovative professionals associated with DAN! and similar organizations, and know that this was indeed a turning point in the history of medicine and nursing.
We have purchased several dozen copies of this book and have distributed it to parents and professionals, and they have been amazed. Parents intuitively know there is much truth to be found in this book. Professionals who read it with an open mind often come around and start to pay attention to data rather than dogma.
Invest a few hours reading this book. It will change the life of someone you love, or someone with whose care and development you are entrusted.

In the midst of a worldwide epidemic of autism, ADD, and ADHD, this book is a message of hope to parents embarking on the challenging journey of finding proper medical care for their Autism Spectrum Disorder children. Genetic susceptibility activated by "triggers" such as pesticides and heavy metals in vaccines can lead to immune system impairment, gut dysfunction, and pathogen invasion such as yeast and viruses in many children. This is the first book written by an experienced clinician that gives a step-by-step treatment guide for parents and doctors based on the understanding that ASD is a complex biomedical illness resulting in significant brain malnutrition. Dr. McCandless, whose grandchild with autism has inspired her "broad spectrum approach," describes important diagnostic tools needed to select appropriate treatment programs. Her book explains major therapies newly available and identifies safe and effective options for parents and physicians working together to improve the health of these special children.

Helping Children with Autism Learn: Treatment Approaches for Parents and Professionals Review

HelpingChildrenwithAutismLearn:TreatmentApproachesforParentsandProfessionals
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
As an educator of children, adolescents and adults with autism for over 20 years, I read with dismay Dr. Siegel's simplification of many behaviors exhibited by people with autism. She often makes statements as though they are fact, such as the "why" of many behaviors. At first, it seemed to be an occasional error, but after reading and reading, the book clearly makes arrogant statements about children, parents and education of those with autism which are just plain wrong or strongly misleads with assumptions, rather than factual knowledge.
It dismays me to think that a parent, particularly a parent of a young child with autism, would take these statements as absolute fact, simply because they are written by a Dr. Too often, these highly vulnerable parents come away either with false hope, or with utter dispair about what they have just read in her book.

Bryna Siegel gives parents of autistic children what they need most: hope. Her first book, The World of the Autistic Child, became an instant classic, illuminating the inaccessible minds of afflicted children. Now she offers an equally insightful, thoroughly practical guide to treating the learning disabilities associated with this heartbreaking disorder. The trouble with treating autism, Siegel writes, is that it is a spectrum disorder -- a combination of a number of symptoms and causes. To one extent or another, it robs the child of social bonds, language, and intimacy -- but the extent varies dramatically in each case. The key is to understand each case of autism as a discrete set of learning disabilities, each of which must be treated individually. Siegel explains how to take an inventory of a child's particular disabilities, breaks down the various kinds unique to autism, discusses our current knowledge about each, and reviews the existing strategies for treating them. There is no simple cure for this multifarious disorder, she writes; instead, an individual program, witha unique array of specific treatments, must be constructed for each child. She gives practical guidance for fashioning such a program, empowering parents to take the lead in their child's treatment. At the same time, she cautions against the proliferating, but questionable, treatments hawked to afflicted families. She knows the panic to do something, anything, to help an autistic child, and she offers parents reassurance and support as well as sensible advice, combining knowledge from experience, theory, and research. For parents, autism in a child is heartbreaking. But it need not be overwhelming. Bryna Siegel offers a new understanding, and a practical, thoughtful approach, that will giveparents new hope.

Gut and Psychology Syndrome: Natural Treatment For Dyspraxia, Autism, ADD, Dyslexia, ADHD, Depression, Schizophrenia Review

GutandPsychologySyndrome:NaturalTreatmentForDyspraxia,Autism,ADD,Dyslexia,ADHD,Depression,Schizophrenia
Average Reviews:

When I first saw this book, I had no interest in reading it. After all, I wasn't dealing with any of the conditions listed in the subtitle and neither was anyone in my immediate family. However, I briefly heard Dr. Campbell-McBride speak at a Weston Price Conference and realized that it might be more applicable (and interesting) than I thought. I'm so glad I ordered it. This has to be one of the best books I've read on health and nutrition.
I think the author has done a disservice in choosing the subtitle as she did. The reality is if you are concerned about your health and how to stay healthy, this book is relevant. And for those that eat a western diet and are exposed to environment toxins, this book may very well be an answer to prayer.
She does an incredible job explaining how the digestive system works and how it can become damaged by the foods we eat and the environment we are exposed to (and it's passed on to future generations). She also explains how different illnesses and conditions occur and why, as well as what can be done to help repair the digestive system and improve overall health.
This is a must read book for ANYONE concerned with their health and how to stay healthy. It's also an important book for all parents, regardless of the health of their children, especially given the diet that is acceptable in today's world.

Breadman's Healthy Bread Review

Breadman'sHealthyBread
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Pro's:
* The recipes work and are delicious. I especially recommend the Italian herb bread.
* There's an emphasis on whole grains with about 70% of the recipes containing no white flour, white sugar, eggs, or animal fats.
* Contains a lot of information a bread machine owner might want, such as how to care for the machine, how the machine works, how to mill and store grains, nutritional information about the various grains, all about yeast (buying, storing, measuring, etc.). Most of the bread machine info is generic and applies to other machines as well as the Breadman.
* Detailed glossary of ingredients.
* Bonus recipes for spreads, such as salsa, hummus, and jam.
* Although recipes are only for 1- or 1 ½ pound loaves, you can double the 1 pound recipe if your machine has a 2 pound capacity.
Cons:
* My biggest pet peeve: for each bread recipe, the 1 pound and 1 ½ pound variations are listed on separate pages, unlike other bread machine books which list several size variations on the same page. So if you want orange walnut bread, for example, the 1½ pound recipe is on page 230, and the 1 pound variation is on page 231. I counted 97 extra pages that didn't need to be in the book, had both sets of measurements been on the same page. This amounts to purchasing 34% extra pages, inflating the price and wasting trees.
* Although the book emphasizes how healthy it is to eat whole grain breads, there is no nutritional information for any of the recipes-not even fat grams or calories per serving.
* Every bread recipe contains powdered milk or whey powder. Many people don't consume dairy products, yet there's no mention of how to substitute for it or if it's okay to leave it out entirely. (It is.) You can also leave out the liquid lecithin, a sticky ingredient that's hard to get off your hands, without adversely affecting the results.
* Setting and cycle information is provided for over a dozen models of bread machines-all state of the art in 1992 when the book was written. The bread machine operator with a more recent machine should easily be able to figure out the appropriate machine setting for any given bread. But the tally of unneeded pages is now 100, (or 104 if like many bread machine operators you never intend on making bread by hand, so will not need chapter 7).
Despite the cons, I still recommend the book for the great recipes and the comprehensive bread machine and ingredient education.
