Improving Memory Power

48644448517f38e0a121mIn order to have a healthy body, you have to eat a healthy diet and exercise regularly.  In fact, our brain is like our body.  We need the right food and the right exercises to train it to stay healthy.  What a healthy brain means to us, it means we can think clearer, we can concentrate better and we have better memory.  Everyday we have new things to memorize, whether major or trivial, it is why our memory power seems to deteriorate faster than we would like it to.  So we should work hard to retain, or better still, to improve our memory power.

Now, what are the foods that are good for our memory power?  First, we need a healthy diet.  We should take our breakfast, lunch and dinner in moderate quantity.  Our diet should should include nuts and leafy vegetables and not too oily.  Walnuts and almonds are good to boost our memory.  Researches also tell us that Omega 3 fatty acid is beneficial to our brain and helps our memory power.  Having Omega 3 supplements gives us much health benefits.

As for exercises, we should train our brain as much as we can.  mind games also help in this regard.  The more you exercise, the better brain power you have.  And if you are a parent, you may have heard that the best development period for memory power is until the age of 8.  So you should really grab the opportunity to well train your child to participate into various memory and mind games.

There are also a lot of memory games on the internet.  You can also visit sites like Mensa for memory workouts.  Another factor that can help your memory is to stay happy.  Studies show that happy people tend to have a better memory power than sad ones.  Other training like yoga also help your memory power and mind power.

Memory Techniques That Teach You How to Memorize Easily

1617269683a84a934350m

The human mind has an astonishing capacity for memory, well beyond what most of us every truly experience. Most folks can recall the things they experience which are either important or which hit us in a dramatic and memorable way, yet even some of these do not stick over time. However, the way memory works is that quite often, the information that we experienced at one time is still in our brains, but the pathways towards accessing it, the “indexing” of our minds, has weakened and doesn’t have the ability to traffic a memory back to the forefront. In the practice of memory techniques, we can create stronger pathways which last longer, and teach ourselves how to memorize, and how to retain large and complex data over a longer period. Here are a few of the most common memory techniques used to improve how we can memorize information.

Associative Memory Techniques: These techniques entail the use of existing and very traditional memory functions that our minds perform constantly, but directs them towards specific things. In an associative technique, a well-known item is associated with an unknown item as a way of creating a clear pathway to the unknown item for easy retrieval. Associative memory techniques are mnemonics, linked lists, “peg” words, and a technique called “mental journey”.

Visual Memory Techniques: Using a visual technique, creative mental imagery is conjured up, then rehearsed repetitively, to establish a visual memory, even for a piece of data that has no visual characteristics. A typical example is the act of remembering a person’s name. Normally, a person with the last name of Butcher is easier to remember than a person named Crebdanski because the former has a very easily accessible visual image we can use. In a visual technique, an image would be associated with the more difficult name, causing it to stick better in the mind despite the fact that it is an abstract concept with no tangible qualities. Picture a dancing crab, for example, and you’ll make it easier to get back to “Crebdanski” once you associate the image with the person.

Repetition: Most people are more than familiar with this memory technique, as a common practice for memorizing almost anything, but which most of us have used to study for exams or presentations. Repeating a thing, over and over, increases the ability to later recall it, so this is a fairly obvious technique that most people use at some point in their lives. However, repetition takes a certain amount of time to be effective, and is not nearly the most efficient way to memorize easily.

All of these techniques are a bit different, but they all make use of the same essential principle, which involves the establishment of a memory, followed by the use of a device to wear a pathway in our minds – a pathway that is different from the one that would exist if we were not employing a proactive technique and simply encountered the stimuli the normal way. The way to improve your memory is to employ one of these devices to make a deeper impression in your memory, like tracks in the sane, which will help you learn how to improve memory and get information to the front of your mind in a snap.

Below is a video on memory techniques

This is a cut segment from a larger documentary on the brain titled “BBC – Get Smart”; It reveals some of the techniques used by world champion Andi Bell. Andi holds the current world record for speed cards of 31.16 seconds. You can see more of his results at web.aanet.com.au . Andi Bell isn’t an autistic savant, meerly someone who has trained their brain to be able to memorize and codify information in the brain using advanced mnemonic techniques. The link of Life Event Stress and Working Memory Capacity

1371551898dc20565f4fm

Stress is no fun. Chronic stress can bring about a wear and tear of one’s physical as well as mental health. Experiencing chronic stress day after day is also believed to impact one’s learning and emotion.

Now a new study from buffalao university has stated that experiencing short stressful events may possibly have the ability to boost one’s learning and memory.

An analysis on rat models was believes to have shown that acute stress can enhance brain functions, via the effect of the stress hormone corticosterone on the brain’s prefrontal cortex. Seemingly, the effect of the corticosterone (cortisol in humans) stress hormone on the prefrontal cortex of the brain, which crucial to controlling learning and emotions, was notes to have brought about the positive effect of acute stress on learning and memory.

The researchers specifically showed that acute stress increases transmission of the neurotransmitter glutamate, and improves working memory.

Study author Zhen Yan, professor of physiology and biophysics at university at buffalo, says, ” Stress hormones have both protective and damaging effects on the body. This paper and others we have in the pipeline explain why we need stress to perform better, but don’t want to be stressed out,”In order to test the effect of acute stress on working memory Scientists trained rats in a maze until they could complete it correctly 60 to 70 percent of the time. When the rodents reached this level of accuracy for two consecutive days, half were put through a 20-minute forced swim which served as acute stress, and and then were challenged with the maze again.

According to the results, the stressed rats made significantly fewer mistakes as they went through the maze both four hours after the stressful experience and one day post-stress, compared to the non-stressed rats.

To determine if the corticosterone neuro pathway was responsible for the improved memory, as proposed, researchers injected one group of rats before the forced swim with a medicinal compound that blocks the action of the stress hormone, and injected another group with saline. Results showed that the saline group performed better in the maze than the blocked group.

The researchers also determined that the stressful experience did not increase depression or anxiety-related behavior in the animals.

It is known that stress has both positive and negative actions in the brain, but the underlying mechanism is elusive. Several key brain regions involved in cognition and emotions, including the prefrontal cortex, have been identified as the primary target of corticosteroid, the major stress hormone,” said Yan.

He added: “Our current study identifies a novel mechanism that underlies the impact of acute stress on working memory, a cognitive process depending on glutamate receptor-mediated excitatory signals in prefrontal cortex circuits.”

In addition,” noted Yan, “we have discovered that chronic stress suppresses the transmission of glutamate in the prefrontal cortex of male rodents – which is opposite to the facilitating effect of acute stress and that estrogen receptors in female rodents make them more resilient to chronic stress than male rats.

Study Skills for College

4945513608c36543329em

Whether you teach students who are heading off to college in a few months or you have a child who is heading off to college in five years, there are a few study tips that can dramatically improve their odds of success.

How do I know?

I’ve lived this story. If you have not heard it before, the short version of my story is simply that I struggled all through elementary, middle, and high school. As I started college, I knew something would have to change or I wouldn’t survive school. So, I found a couple of books about preparing for college and took advantage of a few resources on campus. My grades skyrocketed immediately…to a 3.9 during my first semester!

Why?

Because I had accidently learned study skills. For the first time in my life, I knew how to study with STRATEGY. When I think back about that first semester, there are a few significant tactics that made the most impact:

First, I read my textbook *before* class. One great thing about college is that professors give a syllabus detailing what sections of the textbook will be taught each day, so I took advantage and read before class. As a result, I was able to pay better attention during class lectures (instead of dozing off) because I had a background “framework “to help me understand and organize the information in the lecture. At that time, I was a very weak reader, so tackling a textbook was a challenge for me. But, before long, I developed a shortcut for reading pictures and visuals that dramatically increased my reading speed and comprehension. Reading the textbook before class clearly had more impact on my success in college than anything else!

Secondly, I reviewed my notes within 24 hours. The brain stores new information in short-term memory for up to 24 hours before it “dumps” that info in favor of more recent information. I learned how to prevent that “dump” by reviewing my notes within 24 hours, allowing me to file new learning into my long-term memory. During this daily review, I reread my notes looking for connections; connections I could make to the textbook (this is one of many reasons why reading my textbook before class was so valuable) or knowledge I had from previous classes or life experiences. I would ask myself questions, draw diagrams I remembered from class but did not have time to write down, and add details I missed. I also highlighted areas of confusion and was sure to get clarification during my next class.

I was surprised at how quickly I could review my notes from a full day of classes…often in ten minutes or less. These ten minutes easily saved me hours of “cramming” later!

Finally, I took advantage of the “most wasted hours of the day!” I once read that the hours between 3-6 PM are the most wasted in a college student’s life. (I’ve since come to realize this is true for students and adults of all ages.) So, I challenged myself to make them the most productive hours of my day. Instead of lounging around the dorms between classes and dinner, I found a spot in the middle of campus to review my notes from the day, catch up on reading for the next day, and complete as much homework as possible.

It was sometimes hard to stay motivated after a long day of class, but I stayed focused by thinking of the time I was freeing up for myself later in the evening. (It was much more fun to hang around the dorms in the evening instead of the slow, boring hours of the late afternoon.) Sometimes, I would bribe myself with a Diet Coke or even allow myself to take a short, 20-minute nap.

CONCLUSION

These tips launched me on my way to a successful college career…and became the first elements of SOAR. I used them throughout college and grad school but continue to teach variations of them to students as young as fifth and sixth grad because learning *how to learn* is generally a universal process.

I also use them as an adult. People often ask me how I manage my growing business along with my growing family. It’s simple. I use my study skills. EVERY day!
