(More customer
reviews)I've been using the F500BT for a few weeks after
using a Nuvi 760 for years. I already upgraded to Firmware 2.0.
Here is how the F500BT compares to the Nuvi
Cons:
- Routing engine not as good as the Nuvi. Very prone to give
U-Turns when I miss a turn even though I disabled them. Worse is
that it doesn't know if the U-turn is illegal or not. Besides the U
turn issue, most routes offered are not that bad in
"Economical"
- Touchscreen not very responsive. Not as good as the Nuvi.
- Not as easy to use as the Nuvi in general.
- MSN does not work unless you use a big ugly harness. You also
need to connect a ebrake signal for to avoid the menus getting
locked out.
- Battery life of 30mins
- Does not auto dim the screen when switching to night maps.
- Does not tell you the side of your destination. The Nuvi
does.
- Only 1 TTS voice in English. Not great, but not horrible
either.
- Voice recognition doesn't work very well
Pros:
- Nice glossy look with a big screen. Looks way more expensive than
$199
- Map and menu hard buttons are very convenient to have
- GPS reception seems to be as good as the Nuvi. I get reception
indoors
- A lot more information is displayed on the map compared to the
Nuvi
- Plays AVI movies
- Lane Assist on freeway junctions. A MUST HAVE.
- Maps are very smooth map animation when routing. Much better than
the 760, which was always 2 seconds behind and when making turns it
would lag for 3-4 seconds
- Voice does not stutter unlike the Nuvi 760
- Very easy to hack and goes from good to almost great after
hacking. I also have TomTom Navigator and Garmin XT loaded (more on
this later)
- 3D buildings are pretty cool.
- Pairs with my Palm Centro with no problems. My phonebook does not
dissapear. BT performance way better than that of the NuviYou can
head to avic411.com forums and learn how to modify the Pioneer
software aka IGO8 (its very easy). You can also add new maps
schemes, and enable speed camera warnings, add extra 3D buildings,
load international maps, etc. You can even hack the unit so it runs
Tomtom and Garmin XT. However, these 2 don't have the same software
as the PND counterparts, so I use the Pioneer software anyways.
With the hacks I now get the current house number at my position,
so I can easily know which side of the road my destination is on. I
also increased the font size of the data displayed on the map.
Overall, its a very good deal at $199.

(More customer
reviews)This Nuvi does several things very well, and
I've yet to discover any serious shortcomings. My thoughts:
Navigation: Excellent, as is typical with Garmin units. On a couple
of occasions the voice (right now I'm using Australian Karen) told
me my destination was on the wrong side of the street.
Map: The map is clear, the refresh rate is fast, and all of the
right information is provided on-screen, including details for
upcoming turns and junctions, speed limit, and traffic alerts. It's
annoying that I can't choose to switch the display of my current
speed to some other piece of info. I already have a speedometer.
The 3D buildings feature seems pretty gimmicky, and is implemented
sporadically, even in downtown Boston. When there is coverage, most
buildings are monochromatic blocks, and not the photo-realistic
buildings seen in screenshots.
Lane Assist: This feature has been spot-on so far. It's nice
driving in a new area and not getting flustered about being in the
wrong lane. I have yet to see the full-screen 3D Lane Assist
Junction View shown in the many 765t screenshots -- however, I've
done very little highway driving, and I believe this screen
requires that the user press the top-left (upcoming turn icon).
>>>>>UPDATE: After some highway driving, it turns
out that the full-screen 3D Lane Assist Junction View shows up
automatically before potentially tricky highway junctions. Very
nice.
Traffic: As far as I know, I have not been re-routed because of
traffic. However, it's very easy to bring up a list of major roads
and their current traffic conditions, and to avoid them at will.
The pop-up advertising associated with the "free" traffic is pretty
subtle, and never distracting.
Bluetooth: I'm impressed with this feature so far. It mated with my
phone (old Motorola RAZR V3) easily, importing all of my contacts
in the process. The ability to instantly dial any point of interest
(e.g., to check on store hours) is brilliant. The volume from the
speaker is reasonably loud. I also tried sending the audio to my
car stereo using an audio cable, and the output seemed a bit low (I
had to turn my car stereo way up). I have not yet tried sending the
audio to my car stereo using the FM transmitter. I called my
voicemail, and the built-in microphone picks up my voice reasonably
well with the engine running. I'm not sure how well it would work
with highway speeds. I'm told that the cheap Garmin microphone
(which plugs into the cradle, not the unit) improves voice
quality.
>>>>>UPDATE: This is true -- the microphone is an
improvement, though it adds yet another long cord to your long cord
collection. Also, I've tried the FM transmitter. It works, albeit
with a certain amount of static. I imagine this feature would
intolerable if you are driving a long way.
Other features: I haven't used the SD card slot for anything. I
haven't tried the photo viewer or the mp3 player, and I probably
won't.
Build Quality: Seems solid. The unit has a certain heft to it, and
it's covered in a soft, rubbery coating. I've also dropped it
already (because I'm an idiot) -- still working beautifully.
Suggested improvements: Garmin doesn't make it easy to look up the
actual coordinates (latitude and longitude) for favorites or points
of interest. This information should be available at the press of a
button.
Needless to say, I'm pleased with my purchase. The 756t is not
cheap right now, and if you can live without the new features, you
might be better off with an older unit. That said, if you're
looking for a gps device with all of the latest features and
compatibility, this seems to be a solid pick.

(More customer

camera on the windscreen of my plane. I wanted to record my
flights. After trying a few options, I settled on this one. The
suction cup is very reliable - add a little moisture (i.e. spit
haha) in there and the thing is not going to move. The bendable arm
is great - it allows you complete mobility in the car or the
cockpit. It's easy to move around but once you bend it into place,
it will not move. I was really pleased with how well the grip
clamps on the side held my camera in place. That thing wasn't going
to budge. The foldable arms on the bottom are great too, because it
gives another form of support. The quick release at the base of the
arm is great too. It is a well built mount. Overall a great
product.

also my Excursion to help hook up the trailer. I normally purchase
Audiovox equipment so this is the first time I bought a Boyo. I had
Best Buy install it after I found out that it was only going to be
$80 to have it installed. This is well worth it considering you
have to run wires to the monitor.
I also purchased the Boyo 3.6" monitor as well. I was very
impressed with the camera performance both night and day. It also
gives you a nice wide view of the back of the car. The camera is
preadjusted from the factory but you can adjust it to tailor your
needs. The installation was pretty straight forward as well.
Overall I am very impressed with the performance. I was debating
about the wireless model and actually wound up buying one but then
returned it as the stereo shops told me that whenever they have
installed the wireless ones, they have to take them out and put in
the hard wired because of interference.
Also, the rear license plate does not look bad. It doesnt make the
car look like a Special Ed car. The license plate frame complements
the car nicely.

(More customer
reviews)Pros: Large, motorized screen, has all the
features you find in higher end units.
Cons: Screens and displays are very blocky and unattractive. Large
blocks of text get in the way of what you're trying to see. Nothing
is intuitive except setting stations. Sends you to subscreens for
everything, even simple tasks like changing tracks.Summary: The
Power Acoustik gives you a lot of features for the money. However
the buyer should be aware that you're getting what you pay for
here. It definitely does everything it says (if you're lucky. I had
problems with 2 units). It's how it does it that bother me. Yes you
get a big screen, but it's one of the ugliest displays I've seen.
Yes, it's touch screen, but you have to touch it a LOT to do the
simplest thing. For example if you're listening to a cd and simply
want to go to the next track, you'll have to touch the screen,
which in turn brings up a series of boxes with text. Aside from the
fact that these boxes are huge and ugly and block most of what
you're trying to see in the first place, it's very clunky and
distracting when in most higher end unit you can just touch the
track you want on the screen.
When listening to a dvr cdr full of music, the unit gets Kudos for
even being able to play it. But it takes about 30 seconds for it to
load before you hear any music at all. And you'll have to do that
every single time you turn the key off, even for a second. Imagine
a day of running errands. While you're waiting on the cd to load,
all other functions are inoperable, so you can't even switch to the
radio while you wait.
When you have a cd full of mp3 files loaded you'll get a split
screen with the album title on the left and the track listings on
the right. Nice. But again, instead of simply touching the track or
title listing you want, when you touch the screen you get those big
blocky text things. Then you must touch the "Left" or "right"
button. Once you get to the side of the screen you want you must
painstakingly toggle up and down to the title you want by
repeatedly touching huge blocks printed with the words "up" and
"down". Once you finally have what you want highlighted you still
have to touch the big huge "enter" block to make it play, then
"exit" to get all that crap off the screen.
Keep in mind that all this stuff appears over the top of the
listings your trying to see.
When you compare that to say, a Pioneer unit where you simply touch
your finger on the screen and drag it down to move the list of
songs up and down, then touch the one you want....you start to
understand why they cost more. And you wonder if it's worth the
extra money. In my case, absolutely. This unit has all of the
features of the Pioneer I was looking at, a bigger screen than the
one I was looking at and even an sd drive that the pioneer unit
didn't have. But in hindsight I would gladly pay $100-$200 more for
a double din that just works more intuitively and looks better
doing it (the sd drive in the one I have, a replacement unit,
doesn't work by the way).

(More customer
reviews)Some might consider this a lower end product,
due to the fact that it's about half the price of it's nearest
competition. Rest assured, the 'cheap' stigma is in price alone.
It's an easy to use, easy to adjust, and fun to use deck that even
the least tech-savvy of car owners can operate easily.
First off, I was surprised at how good the picture is. I never feel
like I'm watching on a tiny screen, or squinting to make out
details. The sound is also good, although at times during dvd
playback, I thought it was a bit quiet. I haven't tried using a
satellite radio or iPod yet, but for cd and mp3-cd playback it
worked well, with great options for navigating through folders.
Few warnings for those thinking of buying this product;
-Player automatically reverts to full volume after being powered
down. Can be a bit of a shocker if you're not ready for it.
-When going into the input menu or setup menu, there's a break in
the audio for about 1-1.5 seconds. This isn't really a big deal,
but is becoming more and more annoying the more it happens.
-It has some trouble recognizing the track title of most store
bought discs, substituting song names with "Track 1, Track 2"
etc... Not an issue with mp3 discs with ID3 tags.
-There's no option to fast-forward an mp3. I thought this would be
a big deal, which prevented me from buying this deck for a while.
Not really an issue.
Considering the price, it's a really decent deck. Intuitive
controls, easy installation, and fun to show off. Other than a few
minor (and probably easily remedied) issues, I'd definitely
recommend this deck.

(More customer
reviews)I installed this system to my BMW 530D E60 and
it does improve the stock stereo (which was poor) performance
noticeably, but still not up to my other car installation (cost
similarly) performance. To be fair, I did not rule out if it is due
to the (poor?) stock speakers or the head unit itself (but too bad
BMW dictate the type of head unit...).
Pros:
* No wire cutting, just connect (using an optional compatible wire
hardness) to the stock stereo.
* Remote bass boost feature is useful.
* Noticeably improve stock stereo system.
Cons:
* You need to search for the compatible wire hardness (sold
separately) yourselves according to the vehicle's year and made and
I think you would need to buy from other sources. Go for the 5
meter version to install the amp at the trunk. Installing the amp
under the carpet as recommended is a bad idea. I tried it: the amp
will thermal-shut within 15-30 minutes of play and your front
passenger won't like the bulge of the carpet.
* Not really a DIY job. Be careful when disconnect anything from
the head unit. Make sure you connect back all the wires that do not
"relate" to speakers. In my case, I did not connect back the
bluetooth wiring, thinking it was part of the job of "disconnecting
everything".
* Even set to low pass 40Hz, the sub bass is obviously not low
enough, maybe still around >100Hz judging from my other car
installation. You will feel a stronger "boom" then stock though.
Maybe due to the stock speaker response??
* High is not high even set to the highest high pass. Some slight
improvement if a passive high pass filters are added to the
twitters. I have tried several brands of twitters but of no
help.
* Be careful with the input level setting. Too high will introduce
whining noise to the system.
* Overall sound is a little muddy. The frequencies are quite mixed
up, unlike my other installation, where you can clearly sense
output from low, mid and high. Staging is OK though.
* The Aux input design is flawed, or is there a reason they did it
that way?. If you are connecting your MP3 player to Aux, you will
not get bass boost (sub not responding). You will have to connect
to the RCA input with parallel connection to the front, rear and
sub using your own cable & 2-1 connectors - really messy
looking wiring.
I am yet to experiment, but here are what I think anyone else shall
be doing:
* Buy the 5m wire hardness from Blaupunkt since you don't want to
mess around with the stock wiring. The wire hardness is well
labeled so connection to other brand amps won't be a problem.
* Buy one mono amp to drive the subs and one 4-channel amp to drive
front/rear speakers. Both amps must support high level (speakers
wire) input. Best if the amp support or include good active
cross-over.
Or, if you want the original look of your car (without something
hanging in the trunk etc)
* The stock system already have amps driving all the speakers. You
just have to locate them (your mechanics shall be able to tell you)
and replace them with better amps.
I will update if I ever try other amps but I feel it shall be the
better option from my previous experience.

(More customer

what type of threat each sound represents because the visual
display only indicates proximity, not threat type. The sounds
themselves are a little quirky - reminds me of R2D2. It can be hard
to differentiate the different sounds at first.
The real problem is that Cobra's database is not very good. Even
after updating the database, the unit sees maybe one out of five
red light camera intersections that I come across. I live in metro
Washington, DC and northern Virginia and parts of Maryland. I will
be buying an Escort soon and probably throw this away. It may be
cheap ($50) but it's not worth the dashboard space it takes up.
