It is now May 28, 2010. I Purchased this grill (2) years ago.... I figure it only gets about (3) months or so a year of use before being packed away for the season, so the grill has seen approx 6 months of use over my 2 years of ownership. When I went to use it for my 3rd season the unit was totally unusable. RUSTED TOTALLY THROUGH!!!.
I contacted the manufacturer, LANDMANN USA, sent them photos detailing the damage, advising them the unit was always kept covered as well including pictures of the cover on the unit showing how it actually molded itself to the unit from being covered so much. Rather than trying to resolve this situation, they put me through numerous voice mails, promised to return calls and never did and finally accused me of keeping the unit exposed to the elements, not maintaining the grill and it rusting away was all my fault. They actually accused me and are trying to pass off their choice to use poor quality materials in making this grill as if it were my fault the unit rusted away.
Contact Me, I will be happy to provide you copies of our back & forth correspondence if there's any doubt.
The grill is a piece of _______! They claim to use "Heavy Duty Steel", at who's standards?... yea if you compare the wall thickness to aluminum foil. My unit actually has rust holes in the Ash Tray & Side Walls.
I feel I'm fair, I give honest reviews. I've given this manufacturer every opportunity to resolve this issue and restore my confidence in their company and they flat out would rather accuse me of not caring for my belongings while I can prove otherwise.
At this point I have contacted the Georgia State Department Of Consumer Affairs and have registered a complaint against Landmann USA.
Unless they make a better effort to show how good of a company they are and stand behind their products, I would not recommend this grill.
It's up to them.

Weber 2840301 Summit S-470 Natural Gas Tuck-Away Rotisserie Grill, Stainless Steel Review

We purchased this to replace our trusty Genesis Silver B with cast-iron grates. After 10 years of frequent use, I was looking for something with more flexibility and capacity. I also had grown tired of the rust issues with the cast iron grates (yes, I know about 'seasoning'), but wanted to retain the high heat advantages that cast iron offers. The Summit S-470 has more than met my expectations. If you plan to feed a small army, consider the 600-series, but for most backyard uses the 400-series has *plenty* of usable grill area.
Key advantages:
* High-quality stainless construction. Unlike the lower-cost Weber grills and virtually *all* of the competitive alternatives, the Summit grills are made mostly of 304-grade stainless steel. This has much higher nickel content, and as a result is substantially more corrosion resistant (and more expensive). The easiest way to identify cheap stainless is that it is magnetic (so take a magnet when you compare grills). Improved corrosion resistance means that the exterior will remain beautiful for years, and the grates will last indefinitely.
* 7 independent burners on the S-470 (in addition to the side burner). Four main burners, one searing burner, one burner for the built-in stainless smoke box, and one infrared burner on the rear cover. All except the infrared burner run front-to-back. With most of them active, the grill reaches >700 degrees F in ten minutes. This provides incredible flexibility. Extremely high direct heat, completely indirect heat, crispy skin on rotisserie, lots of smoke at low heat, only part of the grill at high heat, etc... - no problem. You are limited only by your imagination, not your tools.
* Extremely thick (9.5mm) grates provide excellent searing and heat retention. These work at least as well as the cast-iron grates on our old grill, but are much easier to maintain.
* High double-wall lid. This makes the grill space under the warming rack actually usable! The double-wall substantially improves performance in cold or rainy weather, and requires less gas to keep the grill hot under all conditions.
* Pop-up rotisserie. It is extremely easy to use, and quickly folds away in a weather-protected stainless pocket. Other thoughtful touches include obvious hanging storage areas for the spit and spikes in the cabinet.
* Rodent-resistant cabinet. The cabinet has double-walled doors with secure magnetic latches, lots of ventilation, and no gaping holes.
Issues:
* Very Expensive. Even on sale, the S-470 is about 3x the cost of a Genesis grill. Only you can decide if the extra flexibility is worth the extra cost. In our case I expect to get 15+ years out of this grill, and the cost is comparable to some good-quality kitchen appliances. However, the very high cost is the main reason I give this grill only 4 stars.
* Side burner has limited heat range. Presumably to prevent blow-outs that would cause safety issues, the range on the side burner is only hot to very hot. Simmering at low heat is basically impossible. For my next trick I plan to try adding a thick solid burner plate, but for now the side burner mostly does not get used.
* Lighted controls are mostly a gimmick. Fortunately they are LEDs, so corrosion should not be an issue and the batteries last for many hours. However, the lights only work on the four main burner controls, and are irritatingly bright when you happen to glance at the gap between the knob and the cabinet while reaching for the control. I added some white shrink tubing to the end of the LEDs to eliminate the latter issue, but overall the lighted controls offer limited benefit.
* Several other reviews mention a design flaw in the Summit grills which allows rainwater to flow from the back of the grill into the grease pan (making a big mess in the floor of the cabinet). Fortunately there is a simple fix. On our S-470 I put an aluminum flashing on the rear of the case using one of the bolts on each end of the grill box, similar to the way Weber handles water flow on the front. A 12" wide roll of aluminum flashing was only ten dollars at Lowes, and I cut it with scissors to fit. Now even if I forget to reinstall the cover, no water drips into the grease pan. This is not an issue with the Weber Genesis grills because the lid design is completely different (but one of the trade-offs is much lower interior space). Weber really should make something like this a running production change.
* Do *NOT* buy the Weber-brand grill cover. I like most of Weber's stuff, but their covers are very poor quality. Buy the Veranda BBQ Cart Cover instead. The 'Large' size fits the Summit 400-series perfectly, and the construction and design are far superior to the Weber covers.
Other considerations:
* These puppies use LOTS of gas! I am very glad that we were able to easily pipe natural gas to a convenient location. I can hardly imagine how fast we would be running through propane at >3x the cost!!
* If you are evaluating the stainless Genesis models, you really should consider the S-450 or S-470. The construction is substantially better and the finish will be much easier to maintain. Basically I would recommend sticking with the less expensive porcelain models, or stepping-up to the Summit grills. In addition to better materials, the front-to-back burners offer much more flexibility and control, and the side table is not covered with knobs.
* Check pricing. I buy a lot of stuff at Amazon, but we were able to find this grill for substantially (~20%) less at another reputable online vendor.
* The natural gas hose is quite thick and heavy, is apparently armored inside the PVC exterior coating, and comes with a good-quality brass 1/2" quick-disconnect. The connector on the end of the quick-disconnect is a female 1/2" IPS thread (i.e., standard steel pipe thread), so you need a male 1/2" IPS thread on the end of your supply line. Be sure to put a "O W G" (Oil/Water/Gas) rated ball valve immediately before the hose connection, and only use pipe dope or Teflon tape rated for use with gas.
* In California, galvanized pipe is *required* for outdoor gas use. According to PG&E, the western gas supply has very low levels of sulfur, so the old concerns about flaking and corrosion inside galvanized pipe are not an issue here in California.
* For rare situations where you need more grill capacity, consider the relatively inexpensive Rib-O-Lator. This is essentially a ferris-wheel with stainless trays, and will hold an amazing amount of food (and still leave parts of the grill available). There is at least one Rib-O-Lator (or Rib-O-Wheel) YouTube video with the Summit S-470, and the tall lid clearly helps. We use it mostly for ribs (surprise!), and ours fits easily inside the bottom cabinet when not in use.
* Not 100% made in USA. Several of the boxes inside the crate were clearly labeled "Made in China," including the rotisserie and both tables.
* Remove the door handles and the doors from the cabinet before removing the protective plastic coating. The doors snap-out easily if you depress the top pin, and the plastic coating is much easier to remove completely if the handles are not in the way. Each handle is held on by two Phillips-head screws and is very easy to reinstall.
* The crate weighs about 260 lbs, but if you remove the various boxes from inside the cabinet and fire-box, two people can remove the shell from the pallet. After that, you can easily roll the grill on any hard surface, and assembly is straightforward. The most tedious part of "assembly" was removing the protective plastic coating and collapsing all of the cardboard debris.Updated July 2010
We use this grill about two or three times a week, and remain very happy. I would definitely buy this again. I've added some photos to illustrate the modifications referenced in the original review. Note that if you regularly use the smoker, the exterior stainless will inevitably get discolored near the right-side and front edges of the cover.

Weber Summit S-470. Whether a propane model or natural gas, if you're not REALLY into serious grilling, this unit may be a bit over your head. If you *are*, you'll not find a better grill on Planet Earth! This bad-boy has it all: Four MEGA-BTU "main" burners, a center sear-station burner, a smoker box burner and a dedicated IR rotisserie burner. Oh yeah, and a ultra-high power side burner, too.
Your charcoal-grilling buddies tease you because you can't get that nasty charcoal lighter (carcinogen!) "taste" with a gas grill? Ha! You can now - and go 'em one better! Use the smoker box and any number of REAL wood chips and you get the taste and odor of apple, alderwood, hickory, mesquite, oak or cherry w/o the CHT chemical dangers!
It's simply incredible! Yeah, it ain't a "hardware-store el-cheapo" either so spend the cash and you're getting a GENUINE Weber-built grill to last - no joke - a life-time. Check out everyone else's warranty and you'll jump on the Weber wagon - if you haven't already.
Weber **IS** quality grilling. Period. You can spend more, you can buy bigger - but ya can't buy better.
Feeding more people than this rather large grill can handle - with EASE? The Summit S-670 is the King-Kong big-brother of the S-470. If you can't cook on either of these two grills, then just give up, sport - and run on down to Burger King!

This item is not as functional as I thought. I miscalculated the size which is not big enough for my purpose. Also, the brittle like surface is cracking and peeling off. I was going to exchange or return the item but the packaging was discarded too soon.

You want that portable fire pit or chiminea up on the deck or patio, but what about sparks, heat and debris that might harm the flooring? This protective pad sits under grills and other outdoor heat sources to keep sparks, grease stains, and heat from damaging floor surfaces. The pad's fiber cement construction stands up to heat from clay fireplaces, fryers, smokers, charcoal and gas grills for safe cooking and fireside fun--right on that wooden deck or fancy, tile patio. And, to prevent moisture build up between it and the floor, the pad is designed to breathe so there's no need to worry about mold damage. The pad is not only heat-resistant; it's weather resistant and cleans easily with a garden hose, quickly washing charcoal and grease stains away that'd otherwise mar the deck. A chip-resistant, textured surface stands up to bumps and scrapes from heavy logs, grates, and sharp grill legs. And, if the pad's brown hue doesn't match the deck, the textured surface can be painted with water-based, latex stain to match deck or patio furnishings!

This is my fourth gas grill which replaces a very expensive stainless "Turbo" unit I bought from Barbecues Galore about eight years ago. That Turbo started out fine, but steadily deteriorated to the point where I didn't even want to fire it up anymore. The quality of materials and workmanship on the Weber Summit S-650 is top shelf. Every detail is well thought-out and executed, including the burner system, high-end side burner, LP tank weight guage, heavy guage stainless grills, jet ignition system, separate smoker box and burner, drip tray system, massive lid, and LED grill-out lights that really work. I've only owned the Summit for a short time, but everything I've grilled so far has turned out perfectly. The six burners and large cooking area make it possible to cook for a large party, but also provide more options for indirect cooking. Want more heat without increased gas usage? Turn on the burners closer to the food. It's brilliant. Perhaps the best features are the flavorizer bars and grease drip system. They virtually guarantee no flare-ups on fatty foods like burgers and chicken quarters, which was a constant source of frustration with my previous grill. The grease hits the flavorizer bars and disappears into a poof of smoke. What misses the flavorizer bars hits the full width slanted grease tray that terminates into an aluminum catch pan. Clean and easy to manage with zero flare-ups and no charred food.
I really can't say enough good things about this grill and I can't think of a single negative to write about. While the Summit S-650 may seem expensive at first glance, it compares very favorably to grills costing 4x as much. With the Summit, you don't get what you pay for...you get much more. Is it possible to love a grill? :-)

This Fire Magic grill has a 30 x 18 cooking surface (not like most grill out there that claim the cooking area is the whole size of the grill when in fact it isn't). The total cooking area is approximately 540 square inches.
It looks great on the backyard, the stainless adds that "summer" shining look outside.
One of the great features is that you can easily add more charcoal while the grill is on, in case you need more charcoal. You don't have to remove grids or anything to add more fuel to the fire!
This worked greatly and we are enjoying the product very much!

After years of dutiful service, I was finally forced to retire my old Broilmaster. (BTW, my wife somewhat challenges the use of the word "forced") As a proud Weber kettle owner for many years (Both the Performer and a Weber 757001 22 1/2-Inch One-Touch Gold Charcoal Grill, Green), I have long had my sights on an all Weber fleet. I have cooked on Weber gas grills before. It was never a question of quality, but the overall look of the Summit line. Simply put, I hated the wheels. There was just something about that beautiful piece of stainless that appeared to be riding on the deck of a lawn mower. I toyed with getting a drop in, but decided against it. When the 2007 Summit line was previewed, I knew this was the year. The lawn mower wheels were gone.
Within an hour of the grill's arrival at my house, it was assembled. In fact, it probably would have gone faster if I had not stopped every few minutes to photograph my progress. This is a Weber, so I know that this is really a once in a twenty year event. I wanted to relive it.
The construction of the 650 is incredibly solid. The first thing you will notice is that the entire unit is welded together. On your next walk through Lowe's or The Home Depot, notice how many of the grills are simply bolted together. Because the 650 is basically built when it arrives, I unpacked it and assembled the burners, bars, grates, side table, side burner and grease catcher. It used a whopping total of 7 screws...none of them structural.
The instructions, in typical Weber fashion, were easy to follow. Upon moving the grill into position, I was surprised at how easy it moved. I really have no plans to drive it around the backyard when not in use, but it was nice to know that the low-profile wheels were there for more than show. The included ten foot gas line and quick disconnect valve were also a nice touch. Although these features might be more suited for the "stow and go" griller, I found them a nice touch.
With the specified six burners and 60,000 BTU's of heat, I was anxious for my maiden lighting. The knobs on the unit are nicely emblazoned with the Weber kettle symbol and were responsive to my touch. The automatic light system fired up on cue and quickly lit the burners. Although the ignition did take me a little bit of getting used to at first, I blame that on my novice experience with the grill.
In under 10 minutes, I was pumping out 750 degrees. Impressive. I had a bone-in Rib Eye ready to roll and was highly pleased with the results. I know that I will have some great grill moments this summer.
The 650 comes with the rotisserie, smoker box and a side burner. Although I typically smoke and use the rotisserie on the kettles, I know that I will experiment with those features here. The 650 also comes with the Weber 3062101 Grill Out Handle Light that mount on the lid's handle, but I have yet to install them. Although my Dad swears by his, I typically have enough illumination in my grilling area. That, and I just think they take away from the looks of the grill. To me, everything about the 650 screams quality. From the heavy deliberate movement of the lid to the beautiful lines of the grill body, I doubt there is little Weber could have done to improve this. Knowing that Weber is behind the grill is reason enough. I have had nothing put great experience with Weber customer service in the past and know that if I ever do have a problem, it will be taken care of. This summer, the 650 will set the stage for many amazing meals and will act as the backdrop for many more incredible nights.

I'm "REALLY!" in to a healthier lifestyle, and subscribe to "several" respected health e-zines.
1. 15+ years ago I read tests that charcoal BBQ's, really put "LOTS" of very bad carciniogens into your meat!
2. So I went to a gas BBQ. Not as good tasting as charcoal, but "SUPPOSEDLY" healthier?
NOT!- Now I read tests that gas BBQ's are little healthier than charcoal. The "deadly" carciniogens are in the drippings smoke- coming from the hot lava rocks below!
3. So I now go to the MECO electric grill.
Pros-
a. Healthier- as virtually no smoke (grill/elements are steeply slanted, and drippings collect in a handy pan under the grill).

b. No having to mess with expensive propane gas...
c. Well made, and sturdy.
d. Low fire danger- Acceptable for most apartment complexes. ASK!
e. Sears steaks well (preheat on high for 15+ min, and close lid FAST! Requires a "Heavy Duty" electric outlet!). Cooks just as fast (or faster) than gas. BUT, "NO!" BBQ taste! You will probably need a marinade...
Good "web search" recipe I found for steaks...-
I pre-mix & rub in, a blend of-
salt ("AlsoSalt"- is very healthy and GOOD tasting!), black pepper, chili powder (all in equal parts...), and a little cayenne pepper. You can also add any other seasonings you like, to taste...
PAM makes a "High Temp" cooking spray, for the grill.
4. Cons-
a. This is difficult and time consuming (2+ hours! & I'm VERY handy!), to assemble!
Tips- Pounding on the axel end caps was a challenge (finally laid it on it's side, and put a 1/4 drive socket (for backing, on the other end) & hold cap with pliers.
You will surely drop screws... (I put an old sheet underneath it).

I live in an apartment and a few months ago I got new neighbors in the apartment below. They smoke constantly and often have parties with 8-10 people in a tiny apartment all smoking all night. The building is old, the smoke comes through not only the ventilation system, but directly through the floors and fills my apartment with the disgusting stench of Environmental Tobacco Smoke (ETS). This unit saved me from having to move. It's that good.
The HEGA filter is particularly good at removing gas molecules and thus odors and ETS. I have allergies, but they're manageable - I bought this primarily for odor and ETS control and to that end, it works perfectly.
It's much quieter than I though possible for something that moves so much air. Even on the highest setting, I can easily sleep in the same room with it. Some may be more sensitive to noise, but it's much quieter than some IQAir models that I've heard. On the lowest setting, it's barely audible.
I keep the unit in a largish living room/dining room/kitchen area in my one bedroom apartment and it cleans the air effectively. When combined with the air circulation of my AC unit, it does a great job of filling the apartment with clean, smoke free air.
The filters are extremely effective and come with a five-year warranty. If you live in a particularly polluted environment and your filter doesn't last five years, Austin Air will give you a discount on a replacement filter proportional to the length of its life. The bonus is, it's for that AND every subsequent filter you purchase. The unit itself also comes with a five-year warranty. Austin Air seems really great about craftsmanship and customer service. They don't make a huge variety of products (like Honeywell or a lot of other electronics manufacturers that offer air cleaners), but what they do, they do right.
If you're suffering from annoying odors, ETS, or allergies, this is the machine for you. It's really made all the difference.

Cart BBQ Cover Review

From the description, I thought this would be a durable long-lasting cover. I had the same impression when I received it and put it into use. But after just five months into service, the material had completely thinned out at the top from being in the sun, became brittle, and ripped all the way across the top. The "heavy duty" material therefore turned out to be of very low quality, unable to stand up to the sun. I have never seen a barbeque cover wear out so quickly.

These worked fine although I must say it's hard to ship these without some small bending, crushing of the filters. I think I will buy locally again.

The Endust Merv 8 furnace and air conditioner filter works 20 times better than ordinary fiberglass disposable filters. This high efficiency filter is ideal for dust and pollen filtration. Because of their design, these pleated filters capture significantly more particles than fiberglass filters. These filters also carry a numbered rating called a MERV. MERV is the Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value as established by the American Society of Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE). This rating system measures a filter's ability to remove particles between 3 and 10 microns. A higher MERV value means higher efficiency. Changing your furnace filter regularly will help your HVAC system run more efficiently and improve the air quality in your home. We recommend changing your furnace filter every 3 months under normal conditions and more frequently in homes in dusty areas or with pets or smokers. No matter which filter you choose, it's important to remember to check and change your filter often. A dirty filter can affect the air quality in your home, reduce the efficiency of your HVAC system and potentially cause costly service calls.

Works Great! Looks Great! We didn't go with the cover. The exterior holds up great without one; summer and winter. Easy to put together too. The E-310 is the same thing without the side grill.

Weber 72201 Replacement Charcoal Grates Review

Weber72201ReplacementCharcoalGrates

I've got a Smokey Joe. One day, I managed to trash the grate. It is a long story, but suffice to say, I do not recommend dropping a grate on the ground repeatedly as a cleaning method. Eventually the grate breaks. That was my fault, not Weber's.
So, I needed a new grate. I bought this one. As far as I could tell, it is a relacememt, through and through. It fit, it held up under the heat. It grilled. Not too complicated.
You've got the obvious choice: do you buy a new grill, or just the replacement? I can't guide you there. That depends on the age of your grill. However, if you've a sturdy grill, and in a misguided cleaning effort you did a bit of damage, go for the replacement.
I fully recommend Weber's Replacement Charcoal Grates.

I do not own a fatboy yet, but I plan to soon. My husband and I sat on them at an outdoor cafe in Munich. We LOVED them. Very stable, roomy, sturdy. I particularly like the tan/olive color. Seems harder to find. We think these will be perfect for our firepit. Want to learn more about their durability in the elements.
