The dishwasher will rust them quickly. (More customer reviews)Cast iron usually isn't my first choice of cookware for several reasons: it isn't non-stick; it's heavy (I have tendonitis in my hands); and it can't go in the dishwasher. Thankfully, Lodge's new enamel-coated line takes care of most of these issues!
I recently got my hands on one of their two-quart enamel-coated casserole dishes for review, in apple green. I love the wide, shallow design. After all, many casseroles wind up with browned, crusty toppings--which are the best part!--and this allows more of the casserole to come out that way. I also find this a little easier to lift, particularly because of the wide handles, although you definitely need both hands and I still let my husband move it in and out of the oven for the most part.
Two quarts is barely enough for most casseroles, I find; I usually prefer dishes that are two and a half quarts just because they allow a little more room for error and help to avoid spill-overs. However, I think most reasonably-sized casseroles will fit in this.
The quality of the enamel coating is part of what I love most about Lodge's enamel-coated line. In the past I've used Le Creuset enamel-coated cast iron (bought quite a while ago, so if they've improved their coating in recent years I can't address that) and it was definitely inferior. It wasn't as slick, so it didn't clean as easily nor release food as easily. It also didn't stand up all that well to metal utensils. In contrast, it's hard to imagine this coating wearing down any time soon. We made cornbread in it and it slid out of the pan without any help at all.
I love the way this pan heats evenly, holds heat and keeps a casserole warm until you come back for seconds, releases food with ease, and cleans like a charm despite the fact that you should wash it by hand. It's elegant, the wide and shallow design is perfect for giving you more of the browned topping that's so delicious on most casseroles, and it makes the niftiest oval loaf of cornbread. What more could you want?
Well okay, I wish it could go in the dishwasher on general principle, I wish they could come up with a way to make cast iron lighter for those of us with hand problems, and I wish it held just a little bit more. But in good conscience I can only take about half a point off for those, so consider my rating to be 4.5.

Just keep it clean and dry. Don't let it soak in water or you might be sorry. All these products seem to season like cast iron. The more you use them the darker they get and the slicker they feel as the pores of the metal seal. Be sure to use a baking spray or oil and flour to keep the sticking down.

it comes in has no instruction pamphlet. There are two possible
explanations for this.
One is that the machine is available in so many countries that
the number of languages required for the instructions would turn
a pamphlet into a book. The other possibility is that the machine
is so blessedly simple that if you need instructions. ...well, you
probably shouldn't be using it.
I should tell you that the robot coupe doesn't grind up handfuls of
basil particularly well and that it's only a fair to middlin' slicer.
What it does superbly is puree liquids and reduce chunky ingredients
to crumbs or paste. It is also a better kneader for bread dough than
any standard mixer and much much easier to clean.
The other virtue of the robot coupe is that you children will surely
inherit it and they are likely to pass it on to your grandchildren. Mine
was retired from restaurant use after five eventful years and is well
past twenty years of active home use. I did replace the plastic dough
blade about five years ago, and I've sharpened the regular chopping
blade about once a year (a very simple task)
If you don't care about pretty and you like tough, or if you just do a lot
of bread at home, this is the tool for you.

Rival 2-Slice Toaster - White Review

(More customer reviews)After 25+ years my cheap old Black & Decker toaster died, so I was looking for another simple basic toaster that cost little, at least until I could look at all the reviews and choose the right toaster for my needs, I decided to take a chance on this cheap Rival, I've been using it every day for about 6 months... it works OK, does the job I need for standard bread and English muffins, I've not tried bagels but this does NOT have a bagel setting so I'm guessing it will not be good for those... this is called "cool touch" and it is, but if you're careless you can still burn yourself, but there is a toast "lifter" that should make toast easier to remove.

It has wide slots that adjust for thick English muffins to normal sandwich bread, and has a simple "toast shade" control, but you have to learn to set this properly for normal bread versus English muffins (muffins are set about twice the setting used for sandwich bread)... there is a "cancel" button that has always worked for me when I forgot and left the toast shade control too dark, the manual warns to use this "cancel" button instead of just lifting the "toast lever" since lifting it may damage the device... bread is "almost" evenly toasted, though one end of English muffins are always toasted a bit darker than the other end, but it's acceptable for my needs... has removable crumb tray that's easy to clean.

This is a simple basic toaster that costs little, so if your needs are simple this might work for you, however there is one problem for me, most of the bread I buy is just over 5 inches long, and I've always been able to toast it with no problems using my old toaster, but the "bread slot" on this toaster is just LESS than 5 inches, which means my bread will not fit unless I cut off about .25 inch, this is mostly a nuisance but I'm looking for another toaster that will accept my regular bread length... for the low price this toaster does an OK job for many people, though there are definite things lacking if you need more features.

The pan can be used as a bread pan as well. Meatloaf tastes great without grease! I do not use this for game meat meatloaf because there is usually no fat and it comes out too dry. (More customer reviews)Bought these because I needed something after I took a 3 month temp job and didn't want to move a lot of stuff. The knives are nicely balanced, but heavy - if you like a light weight set these are not for you. Their ability to remain sharp is in question - I have to use the steel pretty much every other use. In fairness- this is their recommended interval on the instructions but it would seem that they should hold an edge for longer than that. Two disappointments - they stain easily and often, tomatoes leave a noticeable stain that takes some work with a scouring pad to remove. Unless you wipe them immediately after use it will leave a mark. I haven't put them in the dishwasher - they're always hand cleaned but I'd be really reluctant to try the dishwasher after the staining issues I've had in normal use. The second is that although they're touted as being made from "Genuine Solingen Steel" (it was printed on at least one of the packages) they're in fact made in China.

(More customer reviews)Recently received and used the product. This is my second Calphalon dutch oven. I have a number of other Calphalon cookware products and have had generally good to excellent experience with the products after several
years of use. Purchased this one because of design and reasonable price compared to the very high cost of the product from the major, and most famous, French manufacturer. The 8 qt dutch oven is quite large and heavy, but this is necessary for cookware of this type. The design is fits well in all settings , but I think is particularly sharp in a contemporary style kitchen. It does its' job well. The finish is rich and it cleans up well with a non-abrasive scrubber pad or Bartender's Friend. I have made a large batch of chili twice, several Indian casserole type dishes, and oven baked a chicken. All turned out very well. I have no complaints to date. Would definitely purchase again and recommend to others who are seeking a good product at the 'sweet spot' price. There are cheaper acceptable choices (see Cook's Illustrated review 2007) and much more expensive good choices if you wish to spare no expense.

(More customer reviews)I have had this oven for several months now. I missed an opportunity to by it as a factory refurbished unit, and ended up buying it new here. Initially, I wanted to hold out for a convection oven with a larger capacity, but the reality of unit size and lack of availability of a larger oven with similar features convinced me to by this model.
I think I made the right choice. It is large enough to bake and broil a wide variety of things without having to resort to the "big oven", it has accurate, even temp control, and enough features and custom settings that I am still discovering new and better ways to use it.
It is a pretty large oven, does everything advertsed in best of class fashion, it's very easy to clean, and looks "right" no matter how your kitchen is outfitted. Even simple tasks like making toast are handled better than any regular toaster or cheap toaster oven that I have tried. When toasting bread or bagles, the first part of the cycle brings the bread up to teperature without bringing the heat elements up to "toasting" tepmerature. Towards the end of the cycle, the elements glow bright red, and toast both surfaces very evenly, and to taste. The result is perfectly toasted bread, bagles, pizza slices, etc, without cold centers. The cycle can easily be tailored for your favorite bread. Perfect.
Before I forget, someone posted a "review" here that really was a question about what temp the oven is capable of. The oven can also broil, so that would indicate that it can reach high temps, and in fact, it can. The "bake" setting allows you to select a temerature on the display up to 500 degrees. Most any cooking technique that can be done with a quality conventional oven can be done with this gem. And more. When I first started using the oven, I checked it's indicated temp with my electronic thermometer that I use for calibrating industrial sensors. In every case, the indicated air temp was within a few degrees of reality. My full sized oven wasn't anywhere near that close when it was new.
Broiling, baking, defrosting, and reheating leftovers are also given the benefit of digital control over the cooking cycle. Even the crumb tray was designed for effective operation, and ease of cleaning. I have used a number of dedicated convection ovens, and more than a few toaster ovens over the years, but this one is in a class by itself. Even if you grew up with the microwave, this oven won't gather dust on your countertop.
Update... July 12, 2005. This oven is used most every day, and has proved to be a solid performer. As time passed, I have used pretty much all of the functions of the oven, and learned to customize settings to please me along the way. I have not had a single problem with the oven since the day it arrived, and being easy to keep clean, it still looks factory new (when I clean it). It is about as large as I care to have on the countertop, and for bigger jobs, I simply use the main kitchen oven. For most anything else, this is the oven that gets the call. I still rate five stars.
