casual usage now and then. The price is good, so you won't be
losing too much if it sits in the closet after the first use. The
mount and tripod are not real stable, so it's difficult to do fine
adjustments without losing the image. But a good quality mount and
tripod are going to cost a lot of money, so you get what you pay
for. When you do get it focused in on something, the image is good.
It works good for terrestrial viewing.
The instructions for this scope are HORRIBLE. It's printed on a
really low quality copy machine, and it looks like a copy of a copy
of a copy. The images are a blur of black, so you can't see what
they are trying to show you. You would think that a company that
deals with optics would understand blurry images.
But even if the images were good, the instructions are terrible.
There is no mention of how to attach the counterbalance, and from
the really poor image which shows it attached, you can't even see
where it attaches. There is also an extra knob with no mention of
it's existence, or what to do with it. At one point it says to do 3
things in the order given, but in order to do #1, you have to do #3
first.
Go to the following website and watch the video. It is much better
than the instructions, and explains everything, including where to
put the extra knob:
[...]
So forget the included instructions and go straight to the video
and you will have a much better experience and will be enjoying
this scope much faster. It's a good buy and a good amateur
scope.

(More customer
reviews)I have had this one for about 2 weeks.... this
replaces a bigger 1080i Sony HDR video camera (built in 30 gb
spinning hard drive) that we purchased may 2007 for $1600 AND
LOST... For this current price, this can't be beat. I have had the
chance to review both the movie quality and photo quality and still
pleased., although it may be slightly inferior to my previous
camera.
IT would not be fair to compare this camera to my older Sony, (kind
of like comparing a nice point and shoot camera to one that that is
an SLR)...
However, I would still buy this one for the price point..
Things that are different are:
Image stabilization.... Althought this one is so bad, it is not as
forgiving as the Sony....partly because it is smaller, weighs much
less and less likely to use 2 hands as we were with the Sony.
Compared to the Sony, this one is faster, more responsive and
faster to download to and from.
The biggest thing about this camera is that this is a "point and
shoot" video camera and not something that you will be using to
film weddings professionally. For us, that was our primary use.
This camera does take gorgeous 1080i movies, however, the image
quality is lessened indoors or under suboptimal lighting. You can
take photos while shooting video, however, the picture resolutions
are downgraded during this and we are starting to avoid doing
this.
The Flash memory card is great!, the speed at which it "comes to
life" is great.
The camera has a feature called Ique or something, that basically
"optimizes" settings for those that don't know how, or too lazy. As
of now, we leave this setting on all the time.
The battery life is about 90-100 minutes... We charge it every 3-4
days.
Although there is no lens cover and it is "scratch resistant" this
is something that I am a little leary of, and I can see how it can
get scratched.
I was thinking about the angle at which the camera is set up, It is
okay, it doesn't take much to get used to, but in playing around, I
find that the if the camera was flipped 180 degrees, this would be
optimal and even more ergonomic (if it were like a pistol grip)...
It is not really feasible to use it like this, because the movies
come out upside down and the view screen is on the wrong
side...
Finally, although this has a high megapixel still photo, when I was
using the 12.0 megapixel setting, I found it almost impossible to
keep it still enough to prevent blur.. I end up using it on 6mp...I
am satisfied with these photos.
One last thing, when i went to repurchase this new camera, at first
I was really interested in getting one "with a bigger built in hard
drive" than my previous Sony with the 30 gb hard drive.... I think
this was faulty thinking...if you had a larger hard drive.. you
would be more likely to not download (or backup) the movies and
risk losing them if something happened to your camera. (we lost 2
months of photos of a newborn from the last camera)... Second, I
would strongly urge you to consider flash memory camera, either a
SSD or flash based media. because of speed, battery and size and
safety..

Great video when used right.
This little camera loves light and loves being held still. Depart
of either of these and your video will be less than stellar.
Pros: small, light, takes AA batteries (lithium batteries work
great), uses SD cards. Great vids when used in the right
environment.
Cons: Doesn't like to be moved (panning or just your hand shaking).
Doesn't like anything less than bright light. Indoor shots will be
grainy. Mic doesn't work that great.
Bottom line: nice to have
As an aside; Amazon listed as new but sent me a refurb. Refused to
make it right. They've lost a customer for life, and they don't
care.

(More customer
reviews)This is a good news, bad news kind of thing.
Traditionally, you get the bad news first. The bad news is it no
more structural rigidity than I'd expect from a child's plastic
toy. I was told that there were two grades of Manfrotto; the 'pro
range' made in Italy by craftsmen that I imagine look like Geppetto
from Pinnochio, complete with grey hair, spectacles and a leather
apron; the 'consumer range' presumably made by flip-flop clad
disinterested provincial Chinese labourers with low wages and no
prospects, but from the look of this tripod, it appears there must
be a third class below the others. Let's call it the 'happy meal
range' and I picture them being made by mischievous gremlins that
have been fed after midnight.
The good news is it's not broken after it's first outing; I was
sure it was. The video/ camera mode knob got twisted too far round
and stopped working but there were no broken bits of plastic and
when I unscrewed the head it fitted back into place. It now
properly locks against side tilt in video mode again. The head
still doesn't lock, but having seen the mechanism on the inside I
could see it's not a manufacturing defect or store damage. However,
it does offer fairly firm and smooth friction now that I have
tightened the screws that had worked a bit loose. It would be an
acceptable product if you could replace the plastic head, but
unfortunately, the head is fixed permanently to the shaft. The
quick legs are a bit whippy like a Zipshot tripod, but the leg
locks do actually lock properly. Be careful with excessive weight
though; the light grey retaining ring is bendy and looks like it
will fail. If the shaft starts to slip under lock which it does at
about 7lbs of weight, the camera's probably too heavy to stay still
on the tripod. Wobble is an issue; This tripod is best used indoors
and away from wind. The camera clip on mount that rattled badly and
slipped around ruining the photos was made serviceable with a
single layer of duct tape that took up the play. Duct tape was not
included in the price; that was an after market add-on.
In summary, it's priced above its mediocre build quality. If you
have a pocket camera, or lightweight handheld video, it'll probably
do the job but don't expect too much from it.
Please forgive my sarcasm, but it sums up my feelings towards this
product.

(More customer
reviews)The clip shown here was shot with my new Xacti
CG6 camcorder, it was cut down to 320 x 240 (from native 640 x 480)
and converted to .wmv format to make it viewable to most. It
retains most of the quality from the original .mp4 clip. This is my
nephew Jason and his beloved dog Daisey on Christmas Day 2007. This
clip was shot with all automatic settings and zoomed in about 3X -
4X.
I was really intrigued by the Flip Ultra video camera. Compact form
factor, no more tapes, extremely easy to use and directly connect
the camcorder to your PC via onboard USB connector.
Problem was that the features on the Flip Ultra were limited, or
should I say non-existent. I wanted to look for a similar camera
with just a few more features, without losing the simplicity and
ease of use.
Then I came across the Xacti line of camcorders from Sanyo, read a
review of the C6 from Steve's Digicams and I was hooked on trying
one of these little guys. Then I found the CG6 at Walmart just
before Christmas 2007 for $100 less than Amazon's standard price. I
bought one for myself, 2 for Christmas gifts for my nephews, one as
a Christmas bonus for our babysitter and talked a friend into
getting one for himself for Christmas.
Everyone who received this camera loves it! The video is very good
and the still shots are excellent. The more I play with this
camera, the more I find it can do. If the automatic settings don't
give you perfect results, play around and you will eventually find
the perfect setting for each type of video or still shot.
I don't know why more people aren't raving about this camera, for
the money it may be the best choice in the Xacti line. It is so
small you can take it anywhere. Having your camcorder with you most
of the time increases the probability that you will capture that
perfect shot or video.
One of the best features compared to standard tape based DV cameras
is the ease of file transfer. With a standard tape based DV
camcorder, you have to capture video in real-time via a firewire
connection, then edit the footage and recompress for your desired
output. With the CG6, simply remove your SD card from the
camcorder, insert it in a card reader attached to your PC, transfer
the file to your PC in minutes, then start editing in your favorite
editor. (.mp4 is not directly supported by Windows Movie Maker, but
Vegas, Ulead and other editors support it)
Stills I have printed from this camera are incredible, as good as
photos from my Canon digicams. Check out your local Walmart, if
instock it will be at a bargain price!

(More customer

was peppered with dime-store telescopes that showed me a new blurry
world. When I got the EXT-90EC I expected little more than a
brighter blur. To my surprise and delight I was wrong. Out of the
box, in bad lighting conditions, surrounded by trees, I saw some of
the most breath-taking images of the moon. In fact, I spent the
next six hours observing the moon. I saw craters in detail. I even
saw some craters within craters. I did venture to a bright star I
saw in the sky. It turned out to be Jupiter. It was a highly
recognizable Jupiter. Not another dot in the sky. I could see three
of Jupiter's moons in orbit. I couldn't even make out Jupiter's
moons with the naked eye.
I tried the telescope during the day for terrestrial viewing. Once
again I was pleasantly surprised! The local river area came alive
with wildlife. The photographic possibilities are endless!
I purchased the #883 Deluxe field tripod, #932 45 Degree Erecting
Prism, #497 Autostar controller, and the #774 hard case with the
telescope. I highly recommend you do the same. They all add to the
total experience. The tripod is a must for both astrological and
terrestrial viewing. The 45 Degree Erecting Prism is needed for
terrestrial viewing. If you don't use it, your images will be
inverted. The autostar, once aligned, will position the telescope
to any viewable object, and then continue to track it. The case is
a convenience and insurance policy.

Meade ETX90EC Telescope
w/Electronic Controller
Meade finally brings a serious telescope into thecasual-consumer
price range. The ETX-90EC Astro offers extraordinaryoptics at an
affordable price. It combines a high-resolution opticaldesign and
diffraction-limited imaging with microprocessor-controlled,precise
celestial-object tracking, all in a nicely styled, highlyportable
package.
Improvements to this model include a new forkmount with dual-axis
drive system. The ETX-90EC also includes hightorque DC motors on
both telescope axes, permitting electronicoperation from the
hand-held controller. This push-button electroniccontroller has
four dual-axis drive speeds: slow, 8x for imagecentering at high
power; medium, 32x for image centering at lowerpower or for
pushbutton tracking in altazimuth mode; moderate, 0.75degrees per
second for image centering in the viewfinder or forterrestrial
tracking; and fast, 5 degrees per second for fast scanningacross
the sky.
The Meade ETX-90EC is specially designed to beportable and used in
the field. It offers cordless operation, allowingyou to use the
telescope's dual-axis drive system for more than 40hours on eight
AA batteries. At approximately 8 pounds and 15 inchesin length, it
packs a lot of power into a compact unit.
TheETX-90EC uses a 90mm Maksutov-Cassegrain optical design, and
Meadeactually warranties the optics of the ETX-90EC "to equal or
exceed theoptical performance and resolution of any Maksutov optics
of similaraperture ever manufactured at any price." The ETX-Series
optics offersuperb contrast, image brightness, and resolution;
Meade claims thetelescope consistently outperforms many instruments
of largerapertures. Meade also uses EMC super multicoatings on all
opticalsurfaces to maximize light transmission through the
corrector lens andreflectance from the primary and secondary
mirrors. The flip-mirrorsystem allows for 90-degree observation of
land and sky objects,straight-through observation using the
optional #932 45-degreeErecting Prism, or photo-ready imaging using
the optional #64T-Adapter and your own 35mm camera.
Overall, the Meade ETX-90EC isa fine piece of craftsmanship at a
surprisingly affordable price. Forthose of us who spent our
childhood peering through old-style consumertelescopes, using the
ETX-90EC is like getting time in the PalomarObservatory. From
shifting cloud belts on Saturn to the glowingfilaments of the Orion
Nebula, this instrument lets you observe theheavens in
extraordinary detail.

(More customer

having difficulties finding the proper scope height or cheek weld,
then this scope ring is the answer. Scope height and check weld is
a matter of preference. However, many people have accepted the
proper height to be 2.500" from center of bore to center of scope,
and I have found 2.500" to be the perfect fit for me as well. The
TMS Tactical High Scope Rings will rise your scope 0.748". On a
standard AR-15 flat top, the TMS Tactical High Scope Rings will
rise your scope to 2.4295" from the center of the bore to the
center of the scope. On a standard AR-10 flat top, the TMS Tactical
High Scope Rings will rise your scope to 2.5775" from the center of
the bore to the center of the scope.
I tried using the Winchester large scope rings ($45.00), Leuopold
PRW high scope rings ($50.00), 1/2" risers, 3/4" risers, and they
were all either too low or too high for a comfortable check
weld.
The interchangeable nut and 1" spacer is a nice bonus. The nut
makes it easy to remove quickly without tools, great when you want
to switch from scoped rifle to flip-up sights.
Overall, This is a great scope ring. Perfect check weld, extremely
durable, quick detach knobs, 30mm or 1" compatible, 4 torx screws
per ring (8 total) for added strength and security.
I know there is not a whole lot of information about the company
that manufacturers these scope rings, but the product is great!
Durable, reliable, perfect.

with the Flip Mino camcorder. While the Mino comes with a thin
fabric case, this Case Logic bag provides much more protection. It
is well padded and fits perfectly. When you want the convenience of
the pocket-sized camera, just take it out of this case and you are
good to go. I use this to just store the camera when not in use or
if I toss the camera in a laptop case along with a bunch of items
that could possibly damage the camera. It is well worth the price
even had I paid for it rather than get it free. Just a little extra
protection for your Flip. Note that the Flip Mino will fit in this
Case Logic "pocket" while the camera is still in the factory fabric
case as well. So, you can take it out of the padded case and put it
in your pocket, still protected from scratches by the fabric
case.
As another review pointed out, the bright colour makes it easy to
find if it is in a drawer or case with a bunch of other items.

best of the beginner scope choices. It is highly portable, and easy
to use. Some advice: When you buy the scope, also buy the Book -
"The Backyard Astronomers Guide" by Terence Dickinson. In fact, if
you are unsure about your interest in the hobby, buy the book
first. If you think this is the beginning of a life-long hobby,
consider the 90mm version of the ETX. While more expensive, it will
never be outgrown. Also, don't buy too many accessories (i.e.
additional eyepieces) until you have used the equipment for a while
and are familiar with its operation and how you plan to use it.
Meade makes very high quality products, and this product will last

warn you that you are NOT going to get close up views of the
planets and celestial objects. Even though I spent over a year
researching this scope and planning this purchase, and knew full
well what I was getting into, it still came as a surprise when I
realized that most of the things I would be viewing would be fuzzy
clusters and blurry dots.
If you are okay with that fact, you will adore this telescope.
The first night we used it, we found Jupiter without much trouble.
We pointed the scope at a bright dot in the sky that wasnÕt
twinkling, and when we looked in the eyepiece, there was Jupiter.
It was the size of an aspirin, its bands clearly visible and
several of its moons brightly illuminated. Our own moon was
amazing- the craters were just breathtaking.
Beyond those objects, we needed to plug in the optional Autostar.
The problem for us was that the telescope worked so well we had a
hard time figuring out if what we were looking at in the lens was
what we wanted to find- hundreds of stars shine and twinkle in the
scope when only a few may be visible to the eye. We lost our way
several times trying to find objects using marker stars in the sky.
With the assistance of the Autostar, we viewed brilliant Saturn,
its rings clearly defined. Saturn was the size of a tic-tac, but
very crisp and bright. We found the Orion nebula, and Venus at half
full state. Then we viewed several bright star clusters.
The Messier and deep space objects, which make up a huge part of
what you will be viewing, were dim and hard to make out. If you are
an astronomy buff, you will be able to identify these guys, and
probably enjoy hours of use with this telescope every night.
However, for amateurs like us, you will need a really good map of
the sky and information on the objects you will be seeing. There
are some great software titles out there- we use Starry Night and
do not leave the house without a detailed star map when we are
going to use the telescope. Without either of these things, you
will be lost, or bored, or both.
The lens that comes with the telescope will not be adequate for
most objects beyond the moon. We purchased a higher power lens and
use it about 99% of the time. I highly recommend the Autostar for
novices in order to get the most out of this telescope. Otherwise,
you will spend a lot of time trying to find things that may or may
not be there.
Finally, splurge on the Meade Field Tripod. Any little touch to the
telescope makes the image completely blurry from the vibrations.
The tripod really helped with this problem. The telescope comes
with a plate which can be screwed into the bottom of the mount to
further stabilize the set-up. We spent a few days puzzling over it
before we tried attaching it, and it made all the difference.
This was a great purchase. However, I thought I might write about
all the extras that we found necessary to make this telescope worth
the money we spent on it. It is an investment, but trust me, the
first time you see Saturn in this telescope you will know that
every cent will have been well spent.

Meade ETX125EC Telescope
w/Electronic Controller
When the original ETX telescope, the ETX-90RA, was introduced in
1996, it quickly created a revolution in amateur astronomy. Here
for the first time was an ultraportable and highly versatile
telescope system of unprecedented optical resolution and
performance. Within a year of its introduction the ETX became the
top-selling modern telescope in the world.
Manufactured entirely at Meade's Irvine, California, facility, ETX
Maksutov-Cassegrain telescopes produce optical performance and
resolution that equal or exceed any Maksutov optics of similar
apertures ever manufactured at any price, past or present. Their
optics are so high in contrast, image brightness, and resolution
that the ETX-90EC and ETX-125EC often outperform many telescopes of
larger apertures. These models build on the original ETX concept to
create the most advanced electronically controlled
telescopes--including optional automatic go-to-object location with
the Autostar computer controller--ever produced in their price
range. And yet they don't sacrifice any of the user-friendly
features that started the ETX revolution.
With twice the light-collecting area of the Meade ETX-90EC, the
Meade ETX-125EC permits a much broader range of astronomical study.
Jupiter's cloud belts, for example, are observable at a
significantly heightened level of detail, with whirls and festoons
and the Great Red Spot readily visible as they transit the planet's
disc. The Cassini division in Saturn's rings is routinely seen, as
are additional features of the planet's surface, even under less
than perfect seeing conditions. Microfine lunar detail beyond the
reach of smaller telescopes can be resolved in the Meade ETX-125EC.
Looking to deep space, the ETX-125EC's larger aperture enables the
observation of galaxies and nebulae in much wider extension. The
entire Messier listing of 110 objects is now not only visible, but
every object additionally takes on a readily discernible
structure.
The observer who accepts astronomy as a serious field of interest
will find the Meade ETX-125EC a deeply satisfying instrument for a
lifetime of high-resolution astronomical study.

then I had hoped for. Bonuses include:
1) While there is no stated support for 4GB SDHC cards, they work
without a hitch.
2) While there is no stated support for XViD encoded file, they
also work perfectly.
As a photo backup and viewing device, it is a solid five stars. It
imports the pictures quickly, it displays them beautifully and it
allows me to see the Exif data on the device. The OS, while not
very complex, is smart about where it keeps new pictures. I also
appreciate that the hard drive is so large. I currently have about
30GB of digital images, and I now carry my entire library with me.
Another backup location is always appreciated.
As a movie player it is also very good 4+ stars. Not as good as the
current generation of Archos for example, but as a secondary
function, it is more then acceptable. Pictures are clear and volume
is loud enough that you can use it without headphones if you had
to. With one exception, I didn't notice any jumping or skipping in
the movies I tried out. It does have a few minuses as a movie
player:
1) No support for AC3 audio.
2) Since the screen is 4 inches but 640x480, widescreen movies are
smaller then they would be on a 4 inch 480x272. The flip side of
this is that non-widescreen movies (ie TV shows) are bigger on the
P5000.
3) Quicktime doesn't work very well at all. Lots of jumping and
skipping. It might have been just the two I tried.
On the plus side, every AVI - whether Divx or XViD - worked like a
charm. Every MP4 files I tried also worked.
I give this a solid five stars because in its primary function it
is as good as it can be. For its secondary functions (movie and
music player) it is still quite good.
Highly recommended.

Vixen. Vixen has put together a great combination of features all
in a compact telescope that can be taken as carry-on. They have
replaced the traditional large corrector plate of the mak with a
lens in front of the secondary. This has the effect of making the
telescope quite light for a mak and it eliminates the dew issues.
In order to do this, they had to put in a spider, but with curved
vanes, there are no diffraction spikes in the image. This telescope
comes with a built in flip mirror in the back that allows you to
quickly switch between the eyepiece view and a camera, should you
attach one to the rear. While this feature isn't revolutionary, the
fact that they have t-threads already built into the rear of the
scope makes it more user friendly and you won't need any
proprietary adapters, just a simple t-ring. The VMC110L comes with
a Vixen dovetail that will fit to most modern mounts that use what
is becoming the standard to mount scopes. This dovetail can be
moved from the side to the bottom of the scope so you can mount it
vertically or horizontally. There is also ¼ 20 screw holes so that
the scope can also be mounted directly to a standard tripod. The
accessories that come with this telescope are well made and
compliment the scope well. The 25mm plossl has good eye relief,
adjustable eye relief cup and is optically very good. The scope
also comes with a red dot finder, which I find to be much more
useful that a traditional small optical finder. By being able to
see the whole sky with a red dot over it, you can easily aim the
scope exactly where you want it. Traditional finders give you a
limited, magnified, upside down backwards image that can be hard
for beginners to use. I have had the pleasure of trying out several
of these 110s and the only issues I was able to find were
collimation and the tightness of the front lens cap. I received one
that was out of collimation due to shipping. In order to collimate
the scope, I had to remove two small rubber plugs on the back and
remove the flip mirror knob. Once collimated, the scope gave
excellent images. The front cap was tight on most of the 110s that
I reviewed, but that can be seen as a good or bad. I had to really
pull to get the cap off, but unlike most telescopes out there, I
can be assured this lens cap won't fall off. I found the VMC110L an
excellent small scope, especially for traveling. Its combination of
portability, ease of use and compatibility make it an excellent
choice for taking along on trips. It works great as a daytime
spotting scope as well as an astronomical instrument. I would
recommend this scope to anyone wanting a grab and go in a compact
well thought out package. Porta Mount The Vixen Porta Mount is an
Alt Az mount made for small telescopes up to about 15 lbs. It can
be purchased in a package with a VMC110L or other small scopes, or
by itself. The Porta Mount can be moved manually by grabbing a hold
of the telescope and pushing it to where you would like to look. It
then has slow motion controls to make fine adjustments and keep
objects in the eyepiece. The telescope can be side mounted using a
vixen style dovetail or you can mount vertically with a right angle
adapter bracket. Tension on both axis can be adjusted with the
built in allan wrenches that can be found under the rubber piece on
the head. With these wrenches, you can also set the handle
orientation to the telescope how you prefer, which does come in
handy. I found this mount to be the best Alt Az mount that I have
ever used. I have put everything from small refractors, to the
VMC110L, Celestron's C5 and C6 to their C8 on this mount. They all
worked great, although the C8 had some limited motion in the
vertical because of its width. The mount was stable enough to look
at the planets at 200x and the slow motion knob come in very handy
at this kind of power. Another advantage to this mount is its
light, portable and makes a great grab and go.
I would highly recommend this mount for anyone with a small scope.
I actually found that I used my scope far more with this mount due
to its ease of use and its portability.
