Excellent operations is a great
marketing instrument. You know, practice what you preach. Modern
brands are defined by what they do, not what they say. Simply
because it creates trust. And you only do business with someone
you trust.
Advertising and communications
guru Guillaume
Van der Stighelen (who was also featured in the GROW
book that I contributed to) writes about the importance of trust. Trust is
the essence of any relationship and it is born out of two
components: expectation and delivery.
Being in the Accounting business,
we provide peace of mind. Expectation and delivery is everything.
If your growing a business, cash flow is important, but in order
to generate it in a sustainable way, emotional flow is equally
important. "Am I doing ok" is one of the most posed
questions by entrepreneurs. As a bookkeeper or an accountant you
cannot answer that by just processing paperwork and reporting
results. And you have to realize that financial
information differs from financial insight.
Instead of processing financial data, a bookkeeper needs to turn
it into the intelligence you need to grow your business. The
better you know your business, the better you become. But above
all, it increases trust on all levels: banks and investors see
their money is managed well, entrepreneurs feel they are in
control.
By the way: trust is exactly why we don't work with
any customer contracts at Cynex. Because when there is a
breach of trust, no contract is going to bring back peace of
mind. Ever.

I am a huge fan of Rally. Not only is it
very spectacular to do and to watch, it reminds me a lot about
entrepreneurship.
Rally is unique in motor sports,
because there’s two people in one car. Before the start, driver
and navigator explore the track together and make notes for a
smooth race. You win that race by going from A to B as fast as
you can. It’s not about speed though, it’s about
control. As a driver you focus on the road ahead, shift up
and down or break at the right time, and take corners as gentle
and as fast as possible. You can only do that because your
navigator proactively provides the right pacenotes, maximizing speed and safety. You
control your car, your navigator controls the track. Together you
control the race and win.
Growing a business is like
driving a rally race. As an entrepreneur you’re the driver. You
drive your business forward towards the goal you have in mind;
while your accountant as a navigator is telling you how you’re
doing and advices you on what to expect next. You run the
business, your accountant the finances. Interacting as a team,
you control, you profit, you grow.
Unfortunately,
accountants and entrepreneurs drive at two different speeds. In
fact most of the time, they’re not even in the same car
together.
Entrepreneurship and growing a
business is all about being proactive. Bookkeeping, by
definition, is reactive. As a result, there is almost no
reconnaissance of the track up front and no or incomplete
pacenotes at the end of the race instead of during. This way you
never arrive at the desired destination. Driving blindfolded is
not how you grow a business. But more than often, bookkeepers and
accountants let it happen.
Business and finance have become
so versatile and complex, just as the speed at which changes
occur, that it changes the type of help entrepreneurs require
from their back office. Commodity tasks such as administration,
bookkeeping and tax matters will no longer fulfill their needs in
growing to profitability.
I believe that any accountant
that's not providing pacenotes or even tries to get in the same
car with its customer, decrease economic value for themselves and
for others.
When running or growing a
business, there is no such thing as good news and bad news. As in
rally pacenotes, there's only fast and slow news. The sooner you
learn about a crisis, the more time you ave to convert it into an
opportunity. If you know about a hole on the left side of the
road before a corner, you can keep right, keep your
speed and keep your car in one piece.
As I stated in my previous article, I believe a new type of
accounting firm is needed. One that changes the rules on how
services are provided and that gets in the car with the
entrepreneur working towards common business goals. I don't mean
they have to participate in the business as they have to keep
their distance and stay independant. I do mean that they organize
themselves to spend more time at the customer's premises in order
to be as proactive as they can.

When we were reflecting on the
business of Bookkeeping and Accounting a couple of years ago, and
on how the future of this Industry would look like, this quote of
a VC inspired me a lot:
“I have set aside
the idea of being called a Venture Capitalist, because I am NOT
in the financial business. I am in the Venture Assistant
business. My goal is to be the best assistant there is for
anybody trying to build a great business.”
He's absolutely right.
In fact, it's what I think the
future of Accounting is as well. Yes, Accountants take care
of your finances, but what they do with it and how they are
organized makes if they are a Venture Assistant to an
entrepreneur trying to grow his business, or just ... well ... an
Accountant.
At Cynex, we believe there's room for change on
how Accounting services are provided and how this industry is
organized. We can't change the rules of Accounting, but we
definately can change how the game is played. If you replace
Venture Capitalist by Accountant in the quote above, a lot of
opportunities appear with a lot of stuff to re-think about what
it is Accountants do and should do.
In being a great Venture
Assistant, what qualities and expertise do Accountants need as
opposed to the work they do today? What expertise is missing in
Accounting firms? What can be done better or different? What do
entrepreneurs need/want/expect, but do not get?
More on this later, but in the
meantime I'm curious to learn your point of view.
