Storm Moon to sweep the Betfair Funds The PJA Doctor National Stakes (Listed Race) at Sandown
The Class 1 Betfair Funds The PJA Doctor National Stakes (Listed Race) has been able to pull together a rather exceptional line-up of nine two-year-old runners. The race will be held at Sandown over five furlongs and six yards on Thursday, 31st May. Majority of them are lightly raced and have been successful in their most recent outing. None of the entries have raced at Sandown.
One of the most credible entries for the race is Storm Moon, Invincible Spirit’s two-year-old bay colt out of mare, Storm Lily. The young one is unbeaten through the two career starts and is in form for striking a seasonal hat trick that too from succeeding in the first three races.
He cracked into the racing career in the Betfred “When Both Teams Score” E B F Maiden Stakes on 7th April at Musselburgh over five furlongs. Riding with Joe Fanning, the two-year-old had the distance sorted out for himself while leading by two and a half lengths.
Finishing the closest was Just Past Andover while the 15/8 favourite of the race, Polski Max, ended third.
Mark Johnston trained then moved on to monopolise the second chance of the career by claiming the British Stallion Studs 32Red.Com E B F Novice Stakes at Southwell over five furlongs.
Storm Moon did not take very long to get himself acknowledged as he was entered as the 4/11 favourite of the race. He led the runner up, Secret Destination, by 2 ¾ lengths with Joe Fanning onboard once again.
He has all the chances of bagging the opportunity today.
He will need to look out for Baileys Jubilee, Bahamian Bounty’s two-year-old bay filly out of mare, Missisipi Star. She encountered an unfortunate sixth position in her third career outing after posting wins through the first two starts of the career.
She won the Betfred The Bonus King Bingo/British Stallion Studs E B F Maiden Stakes on 7th April at Kempton over five furlongs. Marvelino settled as the runner up of the race.
Her second try had her dominating the Equestrianartuk.Com Conditions Stakes on 18th April at Newmarket over five furlongs.
Enduring a loss rather than striking a hat trick might have instigated her for grabbing the race today.

IT’S taken just two matches for Edinburgh Summer League champions Royal Burgess to show it won’t be easy to stop them completing a fifth title in the Pollock (Scotrans) Ltd event.
A trip to Turnhouse may have been a potential banana skin for the Barnton boys but they conjured up a terrific performance at their close neighbours to win 5½-2½.
The foundations were laid when Ian Taylor, Stephen Buckley and Gordon Archibald won the top three matches for the visitors while further points followed from John Fraser and Brian Tait.
Senior star Taylor was given the task of taking on former Lothians champion Steven Armstrong and rose to the challenge, bagging five birdies in seeing off the home No. 1.
“Even this early in the season I felt this was a big match as Turnhouse are a very strong side so any points gained at their course are a real bonus,” said Royal Burgess team manager Richard Hughes.
“I was thrilled for Ian Taylor as he is still recovering from an eye operation at the end of last year and this just shows what a real competitor he is.”
Duddingston have started the same section with two away wins, the latest coming up at Torphin Hill, where some of the visitors were playing for the first time. Mike Armstrong, Duncan Low, David Miller, Neil Hamilton and Chris Reid, a last-minute stand-in, delivered the decisive points for Duddingston.
“After a mix up with the eighth member of the team, I had to step in, fortunately having my clubs in the boot and managed to win,” said Reid.
Following two defeats in that group on the road – at Turnhouse and Royal Burgess – Musselburgh made home advantage count with a big win against Merchants.
Calum Burgess and Adam George halved the fourth at Monktonhall in eagle-3s with the former carding five birdies as well as he won 2 and 1.
“We now look forward to entertaining Royal Burgess and Duddingston in the next two weeks,” said Musselburgh team manager Alex Chisholm.
In Section A, Silverknowes opened their campaign with a big win against Royal Musselburgh, while Glencorse also made the most of playing on home turf to thump Dalmahoy.
“A good start to the season and we’re relieved that it’s finally under way,” said Stevie Adamson of a 7½-½ success by Silverknowes.
At Glencorse, a 7-1 scoreline didn’t do Dalmahoy justice as four of the matches went to the last hole.
Justin Lamb produced the comeback of the week, having been four down through ten before holing a 15-foot birdie putt on the last to beat David Marshall.
Eric Walker, a Glencorse newcomer, chalked up his second win of the campaign while Andrew Wight secured a point in his customary fashion with a vintage up and down on 17 when it looked as though he’d be lucky to make a bogey.
“As always in the group matches, home wins are vital and we are delighted to have come away with such a good result against a very good Dalmahoy team,” said Glencorse team manager Alastair Shanks.
In Section B, the team that appears to have laid down a signficant early marker are Bruntsfield Links.
Sandwiched between home wins over West Linton and Swanston New, they’ve also picked up an away victory at Ratho Park.
In that one, Derek Miller and Andy Soulsby both recovered from being four down after 11 to win their matches on the last.
Miller birdied both the 15th and 16th before his opponent, Neil Sneddon, then three-putted the 17th. Soulsby, meanwhile, holed from 12-feet for a match-winning birdie at the 18th.
Having already made a good start at home, Liberton wasted no time following that up with a win on the road at Craigmillar Park.
Young gun Anthony Blaney put the first point on the board for the visitors, finishing birdie-birdie-eagle-par to beat Scott Smith.
Gary Scott, Ross Munro and Scott Finlay also won for Liberton while Clark Munro secured a vital half against Steven Jackson.
Beaten at Liberton first time out, Kingsknowe bounced back to record a big home win against Prestonfield.
Steve McCulloch set the tone as he covered the first ten holes in five-under to be six up on his way to beating Arran McHardy, who did well to take the game as far as the 16th green.
“A good performance in general and we are delighted with the victory, though I still think there’s more to come,” said Kingsknowe team boss Bill Buchan.
Counterpart Alan McEwan added: “We lost 8-0 here last year and I put the guys on a pint for every point we got for our end of season party. It was a safe bet but Alistair Dun’s win has dented my pocket!”
Newbattle look set for a good campaign in the same section after they followed up a big win at Prestonfield by repeating the feat at home to Lothianburn.

MAJOR online gambling agency Sportsbet has suffered a blow to its Victorian operations after being found guilty of offering inducements to open betting accounts.
A Melbourne magistrate yesterday found proven four charges against the company that it offered free bets of between $100 and $200 in return for signing with it.
Julian Fitz-Gerald ruled that Sportsbet Pty Ltd had advertised in its webpages an ”offer” rather than an invitation to make an offer for a contract.
Mr Fitz-Gerald rejected the arguments for Sportsbet and a subsidiary co-defendant International All Sports Limited that there was ambiguity in Victorian law.
He fined Sportsbet $3000 and the subsidiary, trading as IASbet.com, which faced six charges to which it also pleaded not guilty, $4500.
Mr Fitz-Gerald emphasised that the maximum penalty for each offence was $2389 and said that people reading his ruling might say ”what a joke”.
After the ruling, Sportsbet – which Melbourne Magistrates Court heard had continued to advertise the deal on its website after being charged and during the hearing in April – added a disclaimer that the offer was not open to Victorian residents.
The company told The Saturday Age that following the decision it was ”currently taking immediate action to rectify the issue” and would review the judgment to determine if it will appeal.
The charges were issued after David Leadbeater, an investigator with the Victorian Commission for Gambling Regulation, accessed both websites and navigated to the offers over a number of days in September and October 2010.
The Sportsbet texts included ”Join now get $100 in free bets on the races” and ”Up to $200 free bet for first time deposits” while IASbet’s included ”$1000 free-15% sign up bonus”.
Mr Fitz-Gerald said the process of accessing or downloading the webpages, from information on servers in the Northern Territory, where Sportsbet was licensed, was at the ”heart” of the charges.
He said the prosecution had argued that ”that process of downloading amounts at law to that offer being made in Melbourne”.
Mr Fitz-Gerald said that stipulations accompanying the offers – such as being over the age of 18, providing an address and first making a deposit into a betting account – did not ”alter the situation that a reward of a free bet or bonus was being made as an inducement to open a betting account”.
Defence barrister Peter Nugent submitted the breaches were not grave and the defendants had tried to test the law rather then contest the facts.
He told the court there were no victims or any ”suggestion any individual was affected in a negative sense by this breach of the law”.
Given that the defence argued there was an ”ambiguity” in the word ”offer”, it was entitled to ”test the legislation in this case”, he added.
In response, Ross Ray, QC, prosecuting, said two other operators – Luxbet and Eskander’s Betstar – had admitted similar breaches and been put on non-conviction good behaviour bonds.
He drew a distinction between defendants who pleaded guilty and those who continued to advertise offers on the internet.
Mr Ray called for convictions, but Mr Fitz-Gerald said doing so ”would really be punishing them for pleading not guilty” which he was not entitled to do.
He also noted there was no basis to conclude that the defendants would continue to act in breach of the law.

To be in with a chance of claiming bwin’s prize, customers simply
have to guess the
time of the first goal scored during normal time in the 2011-12

The person who predicts the correct time (or, if nobody gets it

Bayern odds of 17/20 on a win in normal time are very attractive
– a price which may

as a Bayern victory would
ensure Spurs qualify for next season’s Champions League. As a
Chelsea success would mean
Tottenham, who clinched the Premier League’s final Champions
League qualification spot by
virtue of a fourth-place finish, would have to give up their slot
so that the English
holders could defend the trophy.
Those predicting a tight game will be interested to hear that
bwin’s offer of 3/1 on a
draw after normal time is the leading bookies’ price. Chelsea to
make history and win for
the first time, without the need for extra time or penalties, is
available at 27/10.

If ever a town needed a newspaper, it’s New Orleans.
But David Carr reports that Newhouse is preparing big layoffs at the Times-Picayune, which will no longer be a daily newspaper.
Newhouse Newspapers, which owns the Times-Picayune, will apparently be working off a blueprint the company used in Ann Arbor, Mich., where it reduced the frequency of the Ann Arbor News, emphasized the Web site as a primary distributor of news and in the process instituted wholesale layoffs to cut costs…
The plans have been kept under wraps, but the newspaper will likely cease to exist as a daily newspaper, and will publish two or three times a week, according to the employees.
My first newspaper internship was as a copy editor at a Newhouse paper in Alabama, The Huntsville Times, and I remember marveling at Newhouse’s no-layoffs policy. It really had such a thing.
How times have changed.
— Despite a stock that’s off 97 percent in seven years, McClatchy is still publishing daily newspapers (for now). And it’s finally going leaky paywall, a la The New York Times.
Err… actually, it’s going to kick the tires a bit more on the paywall thing:
The approach will offer readers a new print-digital subscription that will include access to multimedia editions for a relatively small increase of home delivery rates. We’ll also offer online-only users a digital subscription that will be prompted after a set number of page views. We’ve arrived at this combination after a lot of research, involving McClatchy papers and others, which shows that a thoughtfully crafted, opt-out digital subscription is a good fit with our overall readership and circulation strategy. In the coming months, we’ll begin a final round of testing with a handful of McClatchy papers (first up will be Sacramento, Fort Worth, Modesto, Biloxi and Columbus). The experiences of these papers will determine how and under what schedule to extend to all papers.
Our experiments with pay approaches, starting with Modesto more than a year ago and moving to several other McClatchy papers, have taught us a number of things. The pay model is a complex move that has to be part of wider plan for how we distribute and value our content. We’ve learned that many light online users are unlikely to become subscribers — but that our loyal print and online customers are willing to sign up in exchange for a multi-media subscription that would include the print edition, web, smart phones and the e-edition. Above all, we found that the impact of placing a clear value on our content is among the most important messages we can send as part of this transition.
Here’s hoping McClatchy still has a stock price by the time it concludes this final round of testing.
— Josh Kosman writes for Rolling Stone on “Why Private Equity Firms Like Bain Really Are the Worst of Capitalism”:
Here’s what private equity is really about: A firm like Bain obtains cheap credit and uses it to acquire a company in a “leveraged buyout.” “Leverage” refers to the fact that that the company being purchased is forced to pay for about 70 percent of its own acquisition, by taking out loans. If this sounds like an odd arrangement, that’s because it is. Imagine a homebuyer purchasing a house and making the bank responsible for repaying its own loan, and you start to get the picture.
O.K., but what about this much more virtuous business of swooping in and restoring struggling companies to financial health? Well, that’s not a large part of what private equity firms do, either. In fact, they more typically target profitable, slow-growth market leaders. (Private equity firms presently own companies employing one of every 10 U.S. workers, or 10 million people.)
And that’s when the fun starts. Once the buyout is completed, the private equity guys start swinging the meat axe, aggressively cutting costs wherever they can – so that the company can start paying off its new debt – by laying off workers and cutting capital costs. This process often boosts operating profit without a significant hit to the business, but only in the short term; in the long run, the austerity approach makes it difficult for companies to stay competitive, not least because money that would otherwise have been invested in expansion or product development – which might increase revenue down the line – is used to pay off the company’s debt.
Kosman wrote The Buyout of America: How Private Equity Is Destroying Jobs and Killing The American Economy’, which has a killer chapter on Bain Capital. Go read it.

Robin van Persie’s mother has told the Dutch striker to stay at Arsenal.
Along with his wife, Bouchra, Van Persie’s mum Jose has highlighted the reasons for him to remain at the north London club.
‘Arsenal love him and that’s a great incentive to stay. Arsenal are a fantastic club,’ she said.
Mummy’s boy: Robin van Persie has been told to stay at Arsenal
‘They have no debts and Robin is idolised there.’
Van Persie thanked his mother for helping him along the way.
He said: ‘It’s because of my mother that I’m the man I am today.
Thanks mum: Van Persie is grateful for her support
‘She always encouraged me to think for myself. It’s always important for me to get Mum’s opinion of my performance after a match and I make no excuses about being a mummy’s boy.
‘The women in my life are very influential, even on the football pitch.
‘My mother, wife and sisters are always honest and sometimes harsh in their criticism. I respect their opinions.
‘And Dina (his daughter) is my princess. I am a typical doting dad. She can twist me round her little finger just by smiling.
‘It’s always dangerous to believe your own publicity but, by talking to the women in my life and looking at my kids, I will remain firmly grounded.’
His wife also thinks he should stay at the Emirates.
Bouchra said: ‘Arsenal showed faith in Robin when he was going through a lean time, so we should not repay them by thinking about other clubs.
‘Our home life and our children are happy in London.’
