reviews)I was creating a movie night box for a Christmas
present. I wanted to include a couple movies, movie style candies,
popcorn, and a bowl to serve the popcorn in. Since the package was
more about the movies, I was looking for a large enough bowl at a
reasonable price. I chose the BIA Cordon Bleu Nouveau 4-quart
serving bowl.
This simple square porcelain enameled bowl is about 4 inches deep
and for my purposes holds plenty of popcorn for two. Maybe even too
much popcorn. If there were more people to consider, I would
probably use this bowl as a main source and supply smaller bowls
for individual servings. The top of the bowl measures 9 inches
across and the bottom about 6 inches across internally and is made
in China. This bowl is rated microwave, dishwasher, and oven safe.
I am a Le Creuset fan, and this bowl seems to be similar to their
pottery selection at a fraction of the price.
The curved square shape of this bowl gives it an Asian flair
without using any decorations on the white surfaces. This should
allow this bowl to blend in with other styles. If you are looking
for a simple serving bowl, this one is well worth considering.
PRO:
Simple, and useful bowl
Rated microwave, dishwasher, and oven safe.
CON:
Some may consider that this was made in China to be a con. I don't
however.

We purchased our current home about 2 years ago and slowly started
replacing the somewhat dated or low-quality appliances that had
been left behind for us. Most of it was Frigidaire or Kenmore.
Nothing wrong with that, but we wanted to get a better fridge,
microwave hood, dishwasher and cooktop. This review, naturally, is
about the cooktop only. The other items ware reviewed elsehwere on
Amazon.
What were we looking for?
ONE - Well, first of all, we wanted HEAT: we are very much into
Asian food and cook mostly in our Wok(s) (see other reviews as
well!). This requires high BTU output.
TWO - We wanted an aesthetic stainless steel look, a little more
like the professional Bertazzoni or Viking type cooktops.
THREE - Quality. We wanted heavy cast iron grates that would
withstand heavy daily use.
FOUR - Space. We needed sufficient space around the wok to be able
to cook properly on the high heat burner if using a larger wok (16"
or so).
FIVE - Ergonomics. The control knobs needed to be in the front due
awkward positioning in the kitchen, leaving little room on the
right hand side towards the back to reach or see the knobs
properly.
SIX - Finally, we needed ALL OF THE ABOVE to be squeezed into a 30"
cooktop.
About this item - KFGS306VSS
After much research we decided that the KitchenAid Architect II
series was the one to get. It featured 5 burners of whuch the
middle burner is a 15,000 BTU burner (18,000 BTU on 36" version)
whereas most cooktops in this pricerange top out at 4 burners and
12,500 BTU max.
It has the control knobs on the front and is a very industrial
looking design.
The grates are heavy cast orin and you get 3 of them. All in all,
this one delivered on all fronts in the specifications that we set
out.
Upon receipt of the item, we found that the 1st rule of
construction (closely related to Murphy's Law)applied to us as
well: if something can go wrong or get complicated it will.
And it did. The CUT-OUT dimensions of this cooktop did not fit the
existing (and what we believed to be standard dimensions) in our
countertop. This KitchenAid requires the following:
Depth, Opening: 20 in.
Width, Opening: 29 in.
Our existing cutout was 28.5" by 19.5". Ofcourse this represented a
horrendous problem in installation as we had to get the coutertop
opening cut out further.
Anyways: some masking tape, a pneumatic sabre saw (14.99$) and some
saws and that was solved as well.
Pros:
0 - Lots of heat from 15,000 BTU burner
0 - Well positioned (center) dual tier wok burner
0 - Full stainless look, i.e. everything except grates is
stainless
0 - 5 burners, instead of the common 4 on a 30" form factor
0 - 3 cast iron grates that allow for sliding pots across the
surface
Cons:
0 - Knobs are plasticized, i.e. they can melt if you put a hot pan
on them
0 - No wok ring with the set, not cool as it would have been
perfect with center burner and cheaper brands do include those
0 - Slightly odd form factor for cutout. Not a real problem but
just a 'BE AWARE' when you have an existing kitchen cutout.
Conclusion
We are extremely pleased with this cooktop given all the features.
What we did not like were the plastic knobs: they look great but I
feel they could have included something better. I assume it is a
heat resistant laminate/composite so I am not sure about the
melting but I think it should have been solid metal. We reduced 1
star for that. The wok ring would have made this back to 5 stars,
but we can't fault KitchenAid for that as only the mor expensive
cooktops seems to get those included. A definite buy if have the
same requirements as we put in the opening paragraph.

reviews)I was not sure this wok would measure up to my
standards of Chinese cooking. I have two other traditional Chinese
steel woks that I use a lot. But, what I found with this wok is
that, even though the heat source doesn't have to be on high, the
mass of iron in this wok generated much more heat and my Chinese
dishes came out fantastically. I have been totally shocked at how
this wok performed.
The surface needs to be gently seasoned, as do the surfaces of Le
Creuset's grill pans, but, once that is done, food rarely sticks to
it (or, the grill pans). I usually let some water soak in the pan
after I've taken the food out, and after that, stuck-on food easily
come off. I highly recommend this pan.

way, there is no writing on the cup to fade away from dishwasher
use. I would have to hand wash all my other measuring cups so that

up, she used Magnalite pots. That's one of my sensory memories: Mom
tapping the spoon on the side after stirring something, making a
deeply satisfying DONG sound (uhhhh, the pot, not Mom). She lost
all her Magnalite pots in Hurricane Katrina, so when my parents
bought a new home, my siblings and I got my Mom the whole Magnalite
set and this pot to set her straight again. She was ecstatic to
have something familiar again, and she's still as happy nearly two
years later. OK, she's not constantly as happy. Sometimes she gets
mad at my dad when he feeds the dog jelly beans. But still. Totally

reviews)When I saw the size of this pan, I wondered if
it could possibly work well on a conventional-sized gas burner. Or
would it just heat the center of the pan with the outer areas
relatively cool? The clerk at the store assured me that it would
heat evenly because it has an inner core of pure aluminum besides
the exterior of brushed aluminum to help it conduct heat all the
way up the sides, too. I took a chance and purchased this pan. It
is great! I cooked one of my favorite recipes--chicken marsala--in
it and it performed flawlessly. The bottom of the pan heats evenly
with no hot or cold spots. It is heavy enough that you can use high
heat with no fear of the pan warping. You can cook at low
temperatures and feel confident that the pure aluminum core will
spread that gentle heat evenly all across the bottom and up the
sides of the pan. It browns beautifully and the mirror-smooth
stainless interior is easy to clean. The lid fits snugly and keeps
those precious juices in your food.
For those who have never tried one of All-Clad's fine pans, here
are a few tips. To prevent meats from sticking be sure to preheat
the pan properly for at least a few minutes and do this on the same
heat setting that you intend to use while browning your meat. Add
the cooking oil (not a cooking spray) after the pan has heated. Use
an oil that has a high smoking point like vegetable oil, peanut
oil, or even light olive oil. Extra Virgin olive oil has too low a
smoking point to be used for pan searing meats. Don't put cold meat
in a hot pan for searing or it will stick. Let the meat sit out at
room temperature for 20 to 30 minutes before you begin to sear it.
Pat it dry with paper towels to be sure it is not wet (that causes
sticking, too). The pan should be hot enough that you hear a nice,
loud sizzle when the meat is placed into the hot oil. Leave some
space around individual pieces of meat to allow moisture to
evaporate. If you crowd the pan, your meat will stew, not brown,
and it will be tough. Don't poke or move the meat around once you
have put it into the pan or it will not properly sear. Right after
you place the meat in the pan, you may notice that it is sticking
to the bottom of the pan. Don't panic! That is how the meat surface
becomes properly carmelized (browned). The meat will tell you when
it is properly seared because it will "release" from the bottom of
the pan and can be easly moved and turned over. Repeat this searing
process on the other side.
DEGLAZE! This is an important next step: remove the browned meat
from your pan, pour off any excess oil that is left in the bottom.
If you see a hardened brown crust on your beautiful pan, no worry.
Just deglaze the pan by adding some wine, stock, even plain water,
and stirring over medium heat to loosen those crusty patches. This
process only takes a couple of minutes. Keep stirring to loosen
anything that is stuck on the bottom of the pan, then you can add
extra ingredients, return your meat to the pan, cover with the
snug-fitting lid and braise or simmer to delightful tenderness.
With its all-metal construction, this pan is oven ready and can go
right from stove top into the oven to finish your cooking. They are
virtually indestructable, too, with a lifetime guarantee from
All-Clad. They may be pricey but you can count on them as a
lifetime investment and can even pass them on to your kids. You
won't believe what a difference real quality cookware will be until
you try it for yourself.
When it's time to wash the pan, hot sudsy water and a little
Barkeeper's Friend scouring powder will restore the pan to like-new
brilliance.
The only down side to this pan is that its slim handles make it
difficult to manipulate. And you will need a pot holder or oven
mitt to protect your hands from the "helper handle" (which does get
hot) and the handle on the lid. The long, stay-cool handle will be
just fine for stove-top use unless you put the pan in the oven.

Used them just a few times and now I'm addicted. I now own the
complete offering of Calphalon Unison cookware, including Utensils,
Towels and Pot Holders. What a difference good cookware can do for
your cooking. Also save on the amount of cookware you use. I seared
a small roast on the stove top, than put it in the oven in the same
pot. Also made homemade gravy (sauce) in the 8 quart stock pot, had
it simmering for over 6 hours and there was no burnt sauce on the
bottom of the pot. Clean up is a breeze, alittle Dawn dish
detergent and a Dobie pad a couple a swirls around the inside and
the outside of the Pan/Pot/Lid, rince it off, towel dry and back
into the cabinet. They are also dishwasher safe. I am so glad I
decided to go with the Calphalon Unison. If you are looking for a
good set of cookware, don't look any further.

fantastically, look smashing, and are just a joy to use.
Cleaning-
Initially, after cooking a few meals I became quite distraught at
the staining and phantom residue that the pans were retaining.
Scrubbing with a scouring pad didn't work and soaking proved
fruitless. Inside of two weeks the pots looked "used."
With nowhere else to turn, I decided to purchase the product

gas grill. I wanted a good quality grill that will last, not rust
out and not need constant upkeep and replacement parts. I'm only
cooking for my wife and I so I did not need a huge oversized grill.
I checked all of the local big box stores. The smaller grills at
these stores had a nice price tag ($80-$150) but they were so
flimsy and all of the online reviews said they either rusted out or
broke after a year or two of use. I was willing to step it up a
notch and pay more, but in the big box stores all you get for a
bigger price tag is a bigger grill that will still rust out and
break down after a couple of years. I wanted something that would
last. The next option up in the big box stores was to purchase a
Weber. Weber has a great reputation for quality, but they are so
expensive and big. I found that the Broil King brand was the
perfect solution to my problem. They build high quality grills (via
Onward Manufacturing Co. which has some affiliateion with Weber,
but I'mnot sure what.) Broil King has several differnt models with
a lot of configurations and options. They are one of the few
companies that use cast aluminum for the oven (it will not rust and
comes with a lifetime warranty). Their burner design is praised in
online reviews and comes with a 5 year warranty. They use heavy
duty cast iron cooking grids that weigh over seven pounds each.
Their heat diffuser (Flav-R-Wave) is made of heavy duty stainless
steel (other companies use cheap steel..just a step up from
aluminum foil). I finally narrowed my search down to a Monarch or
Crown model. Amazon's price ($319), no tax and free shipping sold
me on the Monarch 40.
One thing to note, is that the stand looks like stainless steel,
but it isn't. It is steel painted to look like stainless. Also, I
agree with another poster that the stand could use some extra
stffness. The fact that the casters are plastic bother me, but they
work and they are used on all of the Broil King's grills. So I
think the only con on the Monarch line is the cart/stand. It will
last, but I think the actual grill will outlast the cart. Of
course, this is the bottom of the Broil King line. In the end, I
think I finally found what I was looking for. I just wish Broil
King was sold in more local stores. If they were, the would tear up
the competition!
One final thought. The "Mr. Bar-B-Q Platinum Prestige Medium Grill
Cover" is the perfect fit and best quality cover I have found. It
was only $19.99 when I bought it...and free shipping!

cassarole. Fans of the other shaped le creusets will love this
beauty. Unlike the heart and shamrock designs, the pumpkin has a
more realistic 3D shape. But what really impressed me was the
daring offset handle on the lid. Genius! Of course, the shaped
cassaroles have the same high quality of all of the le creuset
pieces. I use mine mostly for stovetop dishes that finish in the
oven. Of course, like all le creuset dishes, this one does double
duty as tableware--but this time, with even more panache than
usual! Okay, I'll quit gushing now. But I just love that
pumpkin!
