I Am Number Four
Short Story:
John Smith (Alex
Pettyfer) is not your average teen; in fact, one might
call him an alien (though he looks human). He is a fugitive on
the run, constantly changing his identity to avoid those that
will stop at nothing to kill him. Now, tucked away in a small
Ohio town, John begins to encounter new life-altering
experiences, such as his first love (Dianna
Agron), powerful new abilities and a connection to
others that share his unique destiny.
What They're Saying:
"Director D.J. Caruso
(Disturbia) knows his action beats, and he stages some
fierce fights in the third act." - Orlando Sentinel
"I Am Number Four is like a good episode of Smallville: You may feel a bit silly watching it if you're past high-school age, but you just might have a good time." - Arizona Republic
Good For Kids?
Action, romance and a
cutie-pie lead? We're betting tweens will lap up this
supernatural thriller.
UnKnown
Short Story:
When Dr. Martin Harris
(Liam Neeson) wakes up from a coma, he discovers
that another man (Aidan Quinn) has assumed his
identity. Strangely, not even his wife (January
Jones) recognizes him. After pleading his case to
disbelieving authorities, Martin finds himself alone, tired and
on the run from mysterious assassins. It is only after he finds a
true ally (Diane Kruger) that Martin begins to
uncover secrets to his true identity.
What They're Saying:
"Neeson's
always-intelligent screen presence, his nuance and gravitas, help
elevate Unknown beyond its preposterous elements." -
Associated Press
"We're spun through parking garages, dance clubs and good old-fashioned car chases; Unknown is probably the movie The Tourist wanted to be, if it had a pulse." - Time Out New York
Good For Kids?
Unknown's
high-energy suspense sure will keep the kids guessing, but it's
probably a bit violent -- and confusing -- for those under
13.
Big Mommas: Like Father, Like Son
Short Story:
Martin Lawrence is back as FBI agent Malcolm Turner and
his undercover alter-ego Big Momma in this comedic thriller. When
Malcolm's teenage stepson Trent (Brendan T.
Jackson) witnesses a murder at an all-girl performing
arts school, the two team up as Big Momma and coed Charmaine to
crack the case.
What They're Saying:
"The well-established
Big Momma combination of cheap and cheesy chuckles,
sex-obsessed banter, and slapstick so broad even the biggest of
mommas could easily hide behind it." - Radio Times
"It's a marginal improvement on previous outings, if only because Lawrence is slightly lower in the mix." - Total Film
Good For Kids?
Rich in slapstick dialogue,
the jokes in Big Momma may be too overwrought with broad
humor.
In case you missed...
Justin Bieber: Never Say
Never
Short Story:
A preteen girl's dream,
Justin Bieber: Never Say Never gives Bieber
fever-stricken fans an intimate (and 3-D!) look at the young
star's rise from humble beginnings as a street performer in
Stratford, Ontario, to beloved teen mega-sensation.
What They're Saying:
"Though anyone who needs convincing won't touch this one with a
10-foot pole, Justin Bieber: Never Say Never makes a
persuasive case for its titular star as a far more
talented-than-usual teen idol." - Variety
"Justin Bieber: Never Say Never may be the concert film as glorified promotional product, but it captures a genuine youthquake." - Entertainment Weekly
Good For Kids?
Kids will no doubt get a kick from seeing the Biebs up close and
personal in Never Say Never.
Just Go with It
Short Story:
Adam Sandler and Jennifer Aniston star in this romantic
comedy about a womanizing plastic surgeon named Danny and his
desperate attempt to win the heart of a gorgeous (and much
younger) school teacher named Palmer (Brooklyn
Decker).
When Palmer finds a wedding band in Danny's pocket (he uses it to seduce women -- seriously!), he lies and tells her that he is married but he's getting a divorce. And so he must enlist his loyal assistant Katherine (Aniston) to keep up the ruse by pretending to be his soon-to-be ex-wife. Gee, wonder if they'll end up together in the end.
What They're Saying:
"Cheaper than a flight to Honolulu, with probably a few more
laughs." - Financial Times
"There are far worse romcoms out there at present - not looking at anyone in particular, Kate Hudson..." - Real.com
Good For Kids?
Although Just Go with It may elicit a few laughs from
your little ones, it's better to keep some of this flick's
raunchier humor out of the reach of children.
Gnomeo & Juliet
Short Story:
In a animated comedic twist on Shakespeare's classic tale, garden
gnomes Gnomeo (James McAvoy) and Juliet
(Emily Blunt) find themselves in
the midst of love's many obstacles when feuding neighbors
threaten to get in the way of their fairy-tale ending.
What They're Saying:
"If it's not an unerringly faithful adaptation of Shakespeare's
play, it still manages enough wit and charm to come off." -
Orlando Sentinel
"In this bright, bouncy Shakespeare take-off, animated gnomes tell the tale of the classic romantic tragedy." - Us Weekly
Good For Kids?
Kids will fall in love with
this animated tale of romance and friendship.

The tragic and horribly annoying Angelina Jolie Pivarnick may have been driven off of the MTV TV series Jersey Shore — twice — but that doesn’t mean that nobody wants her. On the contrary, there is at least one person who likes Angelina so much that he wants to marry her. Yep, that’s right. Angelina [...]

A real-life wholesome teen did battle against a fictitious over-the-hill womanizer at the box office over the weekend as "Never Say Never" and "Just Go With It" fought a close contest for bucks. The economy was the real winner, as ticket sales surged overall by more than 30 percent, according to estimates. Disney's CG-animated "Gnomeo & Juliet" rounded out the top three with more than $25 million in revenue.
Justin Bieber's most die-hard Beliebers came out in droves to put the singing sensation's 3-D documentary into the #2 slot with a $30.3 million opening. As of press time, the figure was just a well-coiffed hair away from the estimated $31 million earned by "Just Go With It."
"I feel great," Bieber told MTV News backstage at the Grammys, where the 16-year-old Canadian sensation was both a nominee and a performer, shortly after news of his movie's huge opening hit. "I have so many amazing fans and they've been so supportive over these past few years and will continue to be supportive with my movie. I'm just excited. I have the best fans in the world."
"Never Say Never" was produced by Paramount (which, like MTV, is owned by Viacom). The studio worked tirelessly to activate Bieber's rabid fanbase in support of the movie, which focuses on his rise from obscurity to stardom. Special ticket packages costing $30 per head added an extra $700,000 to the film's opening, according to the Los Angeles Times.
Adam Sandler's "Just Go With It" opened strongly but will still have some distance to go in order to recoup its estimated $80 million production budget. Set in Hawaii, the romantic comedy-of-misunderstandings co-stars Jennifer Aniston and longtime Sandler pal Nick Swardson ("Grandma's Boy") but suffers from a 19 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes, which averages reviews from critics.
And while it may sit atop the box office, "Just Go With It" attracted fewer people opening weekend than recent Sandler flicks like "Grown Ups" and "You Don't Mess With the Zohan."
"Gnomeo & Juliet," the other G-rated movie in the top 10 in addition to "Never Say Never," was bolstered by Elton John tunes and voice acting from James McAvoy and Emily Blunt in the title roles.
The only other new film widely released over the weekend was the Roman Army movie "The Eagle," starring Channing Tatum ("G.I. Joe"), which opened at a distant #4 with just $8.6 million.
"Single White Female" retread "The Roommate," starring Leighton Meester of "Gossip Girl" alongside Minka Kelly of "Friday Night Lights," came in at #5 with $8.4 million for a $26 million two-week total. "The Roommate" was made for just $16 million, making that a solid number.
Driven by renewed interest thanks to its multiple Oscar nominations, Best Picture front-runner "The King's Speech" came in at #6 with $8.4 million for a cumulative $93 million total. The English historical drama was made for even less money than "The Roommate" and is closing in on the $100 million mark — a feat commonly reserved for explosion-driven summer blockbusters.
"No Strings Attached" was #7 with $5.6 million. The Natalie Portman/ Ashton Kutcher rom-com has made $59.8 million since it opened four weeks ago. Portman is nominated in the Best Actress category at the Academy Awards for "Black Swan," which was #14 this weekend with $2.1 million. The award-winning art-house flick is even closer to $100 million than "The King's Speech," with $99 million.
"Sanctum" followed "No Strings Attached" at #8 with $5.1 million. Executive produced by James Cameron, "Sanctum" has earned $17.5 million in two weeks with a production budget of $30 million.
Oscar contender "True Grit" and action-comedy "The Green Hornet" rounded out the top 10 with $3.7 million and $3.6 million, respectively. The Coen Brothers remake of the John Wayne Western has made $160 million in the past two months, while co-writer and star Seth Rogen's 3-D version of newspaper-heir-turned-vigilante "The Green Hornet" has made $92 million in the past five weeks.

'I was pregnant with this DVD,' she laughs to MTV News as 'I Am
... World Tour' is set to air Thanksgiving Day on ABC.
By Jocelyn Vena
Beyoncé never really seems to slow down, so when the time came to choose a director for her concert special DVD "I Am ... World Tour," the singer decided to take on those duties too. It's an accomplishment the singer jokes may have sparked those pregnancy rumors.
"I was pregnant with this DVD, yes!" she joked to MTV News.
The DVD hits stores on November 30, but fans can catch the 90-minute "I Am ... World Tour" TV special when it airs on ABC Thanksgiving night at 9:30 p.m. ET. Beyoncé opened up about what it was like to sit in the director's chair.
"Well, I've done some co-directing for music videos [but] this was definitely a big step for me, and I'm so thrilled," she said at the New York City screening for the flick.
Beyoncé said she was completely hands-on, deciding which moments made the final cut and which ones wound up on the cutting-room floor. "It was hard work," she said. "I learned so much. I have a new respect for directors and I think I would like to do more of it."
Her parents, Mathew and Tina Knowles, who also attended the screening over the weekend, said the film gives B the recognition she deserves after years of collaborating on many of her own videos.
"I'm really excited about this because Beyoncé has been making little short films and really helping to direct her videos," Tina told us. "So it's nice that she'll get credit for doing something that she really loves doing and that she's very talented at."
Dad Mathew recalled all of the effort his superstar daughter put into the special. "I'm so proud," he said. "I had an opportunity [to see the film], I've been to Houston with a screening; I've been to Bentonville, [Arkansas], with a screening, and to see the excitement from the audience, what an incredible job Beyoncé did as a director in the editing, I'm just so proud. Hopefully, all the fans go out and get the DVD and soundtrack and look at that ABC special coming on Thanksgiving."

Russell Brand, Willow Smith, Jonah Hill are just a few stars
looking to revamp film and TV classics like 'Arthur', 'Annie' and
'21 Jump Street.'

What do Willow Smith and Beyoncé have in common with Leonardo DiCaprio, Jonah Hill and Kenny Wormald? They're all starring (or in talks to star) in the latest round of remakes of beloved films and TV shows coming down the pike.
On Thursday, news broke that Beyoncé would be starring in a Clint Eastwood-directed remake of the 1976 Barbra Streisand classic "A Star Is Born" (which was a remake of a 1954 movie that remade a 1937 film). In the meantime, Will Smith is reportedly petitioning Sony to remake "Annie" (the 1982 movie and 1977 musical) starring his 10-year-old daughter, Willow, best known for whipping her hair.
In October it was announced that Leonardo DiCaprio and best bud Tobey Maguire would be starring in Baz Luhrmann's 3-D retelling of F. Scott Fitzgerald's novel "The Great Gatsby," with Carey Mulligan joining as Daisy Buchanan.
Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum have been working on bringing the '80s Johnny Depp-starring television series "21 Jump Street" to the big screen since 2008, and they might even get Depp to cameo in it in time for the film's March 16, 2012, release date.
And let's not forget the long hunt for a Ren McCormack (the character Kevin Bacon made famous in 1984), after Zac Efron and Chace Crawford dropped out of the planned "Footloose" remake that finally landed dancer Kenny Wormald the role of his life.
Then there's "Arthur," the Russell Brand-starring remake of the 1981 screwball comedy about a happily drunk millionaire who risks everything for love. The film has tapped everyone from Helen Mirren to Greta Gerwig and Nick Nolte.
Two recently announced remakes are "Lethal Weapon" and "The Wizard of Oz," which are still in early development and without stars attached. Warner Bros. announced their plans to reboot the Mel Gibson-starring franchise on Thursday and tapped writer Will Beall to pen the script with completely new characters. And director Robert Zemeckis announced back in November that he planned on remaking the 1939 Technicolor classic using the script from the original film, with Warner Bros. hoping Robert Downey Jr. will play Oz.
Just this past year, films from "Clash of the Titans" to "The Karate Kid" to "A Nightmare on Elm Street" were remade for the big screen and were well-received by audiences. "Alice in Wonderland" and "Clash of the Titans" went on to become two of the top 10 highest-grossing films of 2010, while "Piranha 3D" and "The A-Team" also went on to strong successes, proving that there definitely is a market for these kinds of remakes.

While Willow Smith is the one who made music headlines with "Whip My Hair" last year, it's her brother, "Karate Kid" actor Jaden Smith, who will take the stage at the upcoming 53rd Grammy Awards in a special performance alongside Usher and Justin Bieber, with whom he collaborated on the song "Never Say Never" last summer.
The trio joins a list of new performers added to the show on Thursday (January 20) that will also include another power trifecta made up of B.o.B, Bruno Mars and Janelle Monáe, according to a press release from the Recording Academy announcing the additions to the February 13 telecast from the Staples Center in Los Angeles.
Also taking the stage next month will be nominees Muse and Lady Antebellum. They will join a roster of previously announced performers that includes Eminem, Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, Arcade Fire, Cee Lo Green and Miranda Lambert. It will be the first time on the Grammy performance stage for Bieber, B.o.B, Lambert, Mars, Monáe, Muse and Smith. Eminem, Green, Gaga, Perry, Usher and Lady Antebellum will be making return visits for the occasion.
While 11-time Grammy winner Eminem leads the pack in nominations this year (with 10 nods), Mars has seven nominations, and Gaga and Lady Antebellum are not far behind with six nods each. B.o.B has notched five, Perry and Green are each up for four, and Arcade Fire and Lambert are vying for three awards. Bieber, Muse, Usher and Monáe are each nominated for two Grammys.
No details of the collaborative performances were released, but the Grammy announcement promised a rare, never-before-seen event for the Mars, B.o.B and Monáe segment.
With the addition of Antebellum, all five Album of the Year nominees (Eminem, Arcade Fire, Gaga, Perry) are now scheduled to perform on the show. Additional performers, presenters and special segments will be announced soon.
Which Grammy performance are you most looking forward to? Talk about it in the comments!

Radio programming directors say new song is getting 'mad love'
already.
By Gil Kaufman
Given the months of anticipation, it's hard to believe that Lady Gaga's "Born This Way" would live up to expectations when it premiered. The towering, club-remix-ready anthem in support of outliers, outcasts and proud freaks of all stripes debuted on radio early Friday morning (February 11), and as with just about all things Gaga, the response was immediate.
After hearing it very early Friday morning, Julie Pilat, the assistant program director and music director at Los Angeles' KIIS FM dubbed the song a "one-listen record." In an e-mail sent soon after the song debuted on her station (hours before the scheduled 6 a.m. ET debut on the East Coast), Pilat wrote that the song, "sounds incredible on KIIS. It was exciting to have the Gaga drop and it be a HUGE event as it world-premiered on radio."
Pilat said that just after spinning it for the first time, she started monitoring fan reaction on Facebook and Twitter. "It was fun seeing so many people stay up for the premiere," she said of the anticipation for the song, which had the feel of a major movie franchise opening or the first day of iPad sales.
"As soon as it hit the air, monsters were posting and giving Gaga mad love," she said. "I saw everything from 'awesome,' to 'best song ever' and 'Dying — think I need to go to the emergency room!' It's out, people love it, next stop Grammys!"
Kid Kelly, vice president of pop programming for Sirius/XM satellite radio, echoed Pilat's excitement, saying the song has been in rotation every 70 minutes since it debuted on SiriusXM Hits 1 on Friday morning. "When I first heard it this morning, I thought it was more mainstream and not the same Lady Gaga we first heard when she hit the scene," he said. "I thought it was definitely her mainstream, uptempo, pop-dance song that will make her a mass-appeal artist."
While Gaga is already a worldwide star, with album sales in the millions, Kelly said unlike other Gaga tunes that started out at pop radio and eventually migrated over to the Hot AC (adult contemporary) format, he predicted that "Born This Way" is likely to live on the latter even longer than on pop radio thanks to its wider appeal. "It's just a bit dancier, with a big, fat hook."
For now, the song is an "event" type of tune for the satellite network's pop station, but Kelly said he could see it crossing over to other stations such as The Blend (described as "Lite pop hits") and several other stations on the network over time.
MTV was also flooded with comments about the song, including one from Darren, who wrote, "I love my life, I love this record, and mi amore vole fe yah!," while Alex wrote "AMAZING!!!!!!!!" But not everyone felt it lived up to the hype, as commenter Journey put it, "Do I think it's her best? No, but it delivers a powerful message and in the meantime still happens to be very fun."
