Kim Possible - A Sitch in Time (2002) Review

KimPossible-ASitchinTime(2002)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Unlike the creators of "the Simpsons" who are only getting to work and a film now that the show is in decline, Disney has put out a KP flick while it's still the top show on their channel. While made for TV and running little more than an hour, "A Sitch in Time" may not be an epic, it is however a great little treat for all the Kimmy cub fans out there.
The plot which involves time travel is surprisingly good. Alot of backstory absent from even the earliest episodes of the show is covered in the film, my favourite being Kim in braces trying out for the cheer squad and then going on her first mission. There are also some funny future scenes. The film kinda can be compared to the old "Batman" movie, as it has taken the same path of teaming up the shows major villains against Kim for the movie. It was also good to see Shego finally take over as we always new she was always the smartest aswell as toughest of all Kims foes.
The DVD is quite stunning. The film is presented in 1.78:1 anamorphic widescreen with Dolby Digital 5.1 sound! The picture is amazingly crisp, with rich colors that no mere TV transmission could ever compete with. Extras are a little slim, but I wasn't expecting directors commentary or a behind the scenes featurette, when I got the DVD. The shear excellence in Audio/Visual presentation alone makes the disc worthwhile.
The only reason I gave 4 instead of 5 stars is because I was a little disappointed that there wasn't a great final showdown between Kim and Shego as I've always considered their fight scenes to be the highlight of the show and love Nicole Sullivan's voice work (she is just as funny in all her live action work, very cute too). Also the movies soundtrack is some rather plain pop songs, rather than the catching musical score from the show.
Overall a great little purchase!
PS To the hater calling him/herself "dreldarion" who wrote the review below, a small word of advice: if you're going to write a sarcastic review, by logic it should contain at least a little hummour and you're just not funny at all.

It's Kim Possible's most extreme adventure yet! In her race against time, she travels through the years in her first way cool, full-length movie. Here's the "sitch": When Shego and her evil henchmen capture the all-powerful Time Monkey and start monkeying around with time, a visitor from the future -- Rufus 3000, a buffed-up, talking descendent of everyone's favorite naked mole rat -- alerts Kim to the plan. Kim, along with her faithful sidekick Ron Stoppable and Rufus, must triumph in the present and the past or the future will be history! Featuring awesome bonus features, a notable guest cast -- including Freddie Prinze Jr., Dakota Fanning, Kelly Ripa, and Raven -- and a whole lot more, A SITCH IN TIME is SO not your average movie.

National Geographic: The Wildlife Collection Review

This DVD set has four National Geographic TV specials about jaguars, bears, lions, hyenas, and whales, along with some bonus material on the programs. You are treated to some of the great wildlife photography that you expect from National Geographic. However, I wish that more of the wildlife specials that were made over the years were included in the set. I would rather have much more of the artful film photography than the video included in the bonus footage. Still, it is a very entertaining and educational set, not too expensive and well worth your viewing time.

Emily of New Moon: The Complete First Season Review

EmilyofNewMoon:TheCompleteFirstSeason

Aired from 1998-2000 and spanning four seasons
Based on Lucy Maud Montgomery's Novel, Emily of New Moon is the brilliant story of a free-spirited orphaned girl who's vivid imagination, passion to write, and romantic nature clash with her strict adoptive family.
I am an avid fan of period TV and movies so, when I stumbled on this show on cable while in my teens it was almost a given that I was going to enjoy it. But I had know idea then what a deep impression it would leave on me. I had heard of L.M. Montgomery and read Anne of Green Green Gables and Anne of Avonlea but had never heard of the Emily books so the series was completely new to me. and I was hooked, I watched as often as I could but the trouble was that the show's time slot Kept changing with the result that I often missed out, which was annoying because the show quickly became my favorite. Everything about it was wonderful, the casting/acting, the costumes and sets, the music especially the music. in short for me it was TV bliss. It wasn't all bad really, withdrawl symtoms from missing the show lead me to read the books Emily of New Moon (Emily Novels) Emily Climbs (Emily Novels) and Emily's Quest (Emily Novels) which to this day are at the top of my list of The Best Books Ever. Eventually I lost track of the show completely, and never got to see the last episodes, but I never forgot about it. If you've seen and enjoyed the Anne of Green Gables movies Anne of Green Gables: The Collection or perhaps the long running Avonlea series Road to Avonlea Season 1 Road to Avonlea Season 2 Road to Avonlea Season 3 - Spin-off from Anne of Green Gables Road to Avonlea Season 4 Road to Avonlea Season 5 - Spin-off from Anne of Green Gables Road to Avonlea Season 6 - Spin-off from Anne of Green Gables Road to Avonlea: The Complete Seventh Volume Emily is along the same lines but darker in tone with a slightly gothic feel. Season one chronicles the first year of Emily's life at New Moon Farm, after the death of her father. As she battles and begins to win over spartan Aunt Elisabeth, brings light and laughter into the sheltered life of fragile, sweet Aunt Laura and finds a kindred spirit in cousin Jimmy who is anything but simple minded. Emily also finds out where the gift of her second sight comes from. We meet llse Burnley, Perry Miller, and Teddy Kent. who will play important roles in the rest of Emily's life, each in their own way.
Like all book to screen adeptations the series has it's detractors. some think that to many liberties were taken and that as the show went on it drifted further and further from the books. This is true, there where a lot of changes and additions not in the original meterial, but in my opinion these did not hurt the series but improved it. If the books had been followed exactly, I don't think the series would have survived long.
Over the years, I had lost hope that this wonderful but little known show would be released on dvd, so I'm overjoyed that Echo Bridge Entertainment has done so, and I can only hope that there are plans to release the next three season's. I can't recommend this series highly enough.

Kenichi: The Mightiest Disciple - Season One, Part Two Review

Kenichi:TheMightiestDisciple-SeasonOne,PartTwo
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The No. 1 student of Ry'zanpaku is about to face his greatest, most terrifying challenge -- moving into the dojo!
And unsurprisingly the training and action are amped up considerably in "Kenichi: The Mightiest Disciple - Season One, Part Two," which follows Kenichi's life as an official student who lives, works and trains at his dojo. And while the sitcom antics take center stage for several episodes (gratuitous beach episode ahooooooyyyy!), Kenichi's fights start to shift from fighting one-off thugs and into tackling Ragnarok's strongest fighters.
Kenichi is shocked and horrified when the masters suggest that he move into the dojo... until Kensei points out that he'll be living under the same roof as Miu. From then on, Kenichi's training becomes even more hardcore -- and he also deals with island vacations (and swimming lessons from Shigure), teacher visits, romantic rivalries, hot springs, Honoka's infiltration of the dojo (and discovery that the masters aren't actually that bad), and challenges from another dojo (Crab-head!).
But the threat from the megagang Ragnarok hasn't vanished, and Kisara has become one of their highest-ranked fighters, the Fists of Ragnarok. She sets out to destroy Takeda for his defection, leaving it up to Miu and Kenichi to rescue those who have left the organization. And Kenichi is horrified when Miu is cast as Juliet in the school play, opposite the school heartthrob Tanimoto -- but he'd be even more horrified if he realized how close Ragnarok is...
The first five episodes of "Kenichi: The Mightiest Disciple - Season One, Part Two" are rather fluffy and lightweight compared to the ones that precede it, with classic sitcom antics like Shigure and Sakaki pretending to be Miu's parents. And there's plenty of fun comic relief, especially from Apachai ("When she turns you down, please don't hurt yourself! Live is worth living!") and Kenichi himself (stoically slapping Nijima while the latter rants about world domination). The mass shark attack was kinda silly, though.
But the rest of the season gets darker, bloodier and nastier -- there are savage street fights, Takeda and his buddy beating up/being beaten by Ragnarok, Miu and Kisara's heated brawl, and the formation of Nijima's own bizarre gang, the Shinpaku Alliance. It climaxes on a slightly unsatisfactory note, since Kenichi's nervewracking bus-top fight doesn't have much of an ending, but it is fun to see Kenichi becoming strong enough to take out the bad guys without much visible effort.
And Kenichi is getting a lot stronger, to the point where the lesser Ragnarok thugs see him as a cat-eyed black demon figure -- but he's still the same kind, sympathetic guy who flies into a teary fit at the idea of Miu dating someone else. Miu shows what she's capable of when she's mad, reveals her longing for a "normal" nuclear family, and her determined ambition to play Juliet in the play; while Takeda shows the depth of his friendship with Kenichi and Ukita.
The masters all get some fleshing out too, whether it's Shigure's gentler tutelage, Akisame's friendship with Miu's dad, or Apachai's basketball fun. And the voice actors all deserve a great shout-out -- Josh Grelle and Carrie Savage are brilliant as the kind, flaky Miu and Kenichi. Christopher Sabat, Sonny Strait, Trina Nishimura, Vic Mignogna, and Kent Williams are awesome as the masters, while Jason Liebrecht is both warm and creepy as Tanimoto, and J. Michael Tatum is great as Takeda.
The second half of "Kenichi: The Mightiest Disciple's" first season has a slightly unsatisfying ending, but it leaves you eagerly waiting for what comes next. A must-see.

When we last saw Kenichi, he was making the transition from wimp to warrior – okay, maybe no warrior, but he was definitely taking steps to man up.
Well, the world is starting to notice, which is good and bad. On the plus side, he’s making friends and getting more respect. In the minus column, his rep is growing faster than his skills, which is tricky now that every thug in town wants to test his new techniques. That means between street brawls and trying to score with Miu, Kenichi still has to hang tough with the six Martial Arts masters. Lucky for him, the training is getting more tense – because before Kenichi can finally stand tall, he’ll have to beat his fiercest opponent yet!

Doctor Who: The War Games (Story 50) Review

DoctorWho:TheWarGames(Story50)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
There are so few Patrick Troughton episodes out there. His stories were ravaged by the BBC many years ago, and only a handful have been recovered. The first story is missing, important episodes like "The Highlanders" and "The Enemy of the World" are gone. Even episodes with popular villains such as the Daleks and Cybermen are missing.
Thankfully one of the few stories still intact is the last story. The ten part masterpiece, "The War Games", is the swansong for the Second Doctor, Jamie and Zoe. It also introduces the Time Lords as a group, shows us a rival Time Lord to the Doctor in the form of the War Chief, and has a nice, epic feel to it that hasn't really been captured in too many other stories. It was also the last of the black and white stories.
There are certain problems with the story. For one, it's quite well-padded and redundant in parts. Truth be told, it could've been done as a four-part story and worked every bit as well, but that's a minor gripe.
Special features on this three-disc collection include such things as commentaries, features on the Target novels and the comic strip, and much more!
Overall this is a heck of a story and a great collection. Worth every penny!

Veggie Tales: Gideon Tuba Warrior (2006) Review

VeggieTales:GideonTubaWarrior(2006)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The newest entry in the Veggie Tales series teaches us to trust God with two stories about His faithfulness.
First up is the story of George Mueller (Archibald Asparagus). This real man trusted God to provide everything for the orphanages he ran. This is the short segment of the DVD, and the focus is on the famous story of the morning the orphanage ran out of food. Mr. Mueller still had the kids sit down for breakfast, thanked God for the food, and then there was a knock at the door....
The main segment is the Biblical story of Gideon (Larry the Cucumber). He's more comfortable marching in a band then leading anything. Still, God calls him to defeat the invading army of pickles with no weapons and the smallest army you ever saw. Is Gideon crazy? Or will God do what He says He will do?
I don't know how the guys at Big Idea do it, but this is yet another DVD that kids and parents alike will love. The message is clear and the stories are entertaining. The first segment could have been a little funnier, but the main feature more then makes up for it. I laughed multiple times at the jokes inserted into the familiar story of Gideon.
Adding to the fun, the Pirates have become bored from doing nothing, so they try to host the show. That leaves Bob free to do a silly song written by the French Peas. All is going well with "Ukulele Karaoke" until the words get shredded by a fan. Then the fun really starts.
This is yet another strong entry in the fun franchise. Whether this is your first or not, you'll be sure to be entertained and challenged by the stories here.

Voyage to the Bottom of the sea is one of those Irwin Allen Shows. You know the shows of this volume are filled with Monsters and Ghosts of World War 2 U-boat commanders.
It is still great storytelling, With all the crap out on TV that is running now, this simple throwback to the monster of week was nice change from CSIs, Law and Orders, Reality shows, News magazines and game shows. The cast of the Seaview battling the bug eyed monsters and weird creatures may seem farfetched escapest entertainment by today's standards, but the quality is there.
And maybe that what we need today. At least I think so

Emily of New Moon: The Complete Second Season (2009) Review

My daughter loved Anne of Green Gables so we gave this show a try. I really enjoyed watching each show with her. The only downside to this would be the mystical aspect. Emily has visions of the dead and can communicate with them. It is rather strange and sometimes eerie. Other than that, she has a lot of spunk like Anne did, but she is definitely not a people pleaser. I did have my husband and son watch for one show and they didn't seem to enjoy it. This is definitely not a timeless masterpiece like Anne of Green Gables is; however it is highly enjoyable. We are looking forward to the release of Season 2.

Godzilla: The Original Animated Series, Vol. 1 (2006) Review

Godzilla:TheOriginalAnimatedSeries,Vol.1(2006)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This DVD is called "Godzilla: The Original Animated Series Volume 1."
I was born in 1971. So when Hanna Barbera's "Godzilla" cartoon came out in the late 1970s, I was the perfect age for its intended audience.
This show featured the Calico, a research ship that traveled all over the world. The Calico carried all sorts of scientific research equipment with it, as well as a minicopter, a minisub, a bathosphere, a hovercraft, and a lifeboat. The Calico's crew consisted of Captain Carl Majors, Dr. Quinn Darian (a research scientist), Brock (Dr. Darian's assistant), Pete (Dr. Darian's nephew), and Godzooky. Godzooky was apparently a younger relative of Godzilla. He was also Pete's pet.
Although no episode of the show ever mentioned how the crew of the Calico became friends with Godzooky and Godzilla, it was mentioned in a press release when the show first aired: Godzooky was trapped in a coral reef, and he was rescued by the Calico's crew.
As the crew of the Calico traveled all over the world, they would encounter various monsters, creatures, bad guys, villains, enemies, etc. When they got in trouble, they could summon Godzilla by pressing a button on a small handheld signaler, which would emit a sonic frequency. Godzilla would then appear and save the day. When the signaler was unavailable, or broken, or when the sonic frequency was blocked, they could also call Godzilla by having Godzooky scream. Since Godzilla was a good guy, he would always do whatever he could to help them.
This show had lots of action, adventure, and heroism. In the 26 episodes of this series, there were monsters, dragons, dinosaurs, giant insects, volcanoes, time travel, aliens, spaceships, meteors, asteroids, missiles, tanks, and numerous references to classic science fiction and ancient mythology. The show had everything that a boy my age could ever ask for in a TV show. It was my favorite show at the time.
I still love the show today. It's not my #1 favorite any more, but it is still in my top 10.
Classic Media has issued a statement regarding the contents of this DVD. The episodes will be in chronological order, starting with the first episode of the series.
This DVD contains 4 episodes. They are:
The Fire Bird - A giant flying creature that lives inside a volcano is wreaking havoc for the people who live nearby. Godzilla has to stop the creature before it lays eggs. This is a good introduction to the series.
The Eartheater - San Francisco is being terrorized by a giant creature that lives underground and eats dirt. Buildings are collapsing all over the place. The entire city and its inhabitants are threatened. This is a very good early episode. Of the 4 episodes on this DVD, this one is my favorite.
Attack Of The Stone Creatures - A pair of giant ancient stone creatures have come to life in Egypt. Their breath creates blizzards in the middle of the desert. This is a pretty good episode.
The Megavolt Monster - While doing scientific research in the bathosphere, Dr. Darian and Brock become trapped by several giant creatures that live in a giant air bubble at the bottom of the ocean. Godzilla carries Captain Majors and Pete down there to help rescue them inside his hand, which Captain Majors says is "air tight and pressure proof." This is another good episode.

Doctor Who: Horror of Fang Rock (Story 92) (1975) Review

DoctorWho:HorrorofFangRock(Story92)(1975)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
"Horror of Fang Rock" is one of "Doctor Who"'s creepier entries. It proves that a story made on styrofoam sets, with a monster so poorly made that the props kept melting under the studio lights, can still be edge-of-your-seat viewing. The TARDIS lands on a rocky outcrop under a lighthouse on the same night that an alien invasion fleet's advance scout crash-lands into the sea. A team of doomed lighthouse keepers, derived from a sub-Coleridge turn-of-the-century ballad, falls easy prey to the shape-shifting, electricity-wielding creature, as does a yacht full of bickering aristocrats also stranded on the isle.
The story opens the 4th (and exact middle) of Tom Baker's seven seasons as the Doctor. As a midway point to the Baker years, "Fang Rock" is intriguing in that it not only hearkens back to the gothic horror of his earlier years, but also serves as a window on the series' future mayhem, when Baker the actor would start acting against the scripts and run amok of the producers' control. The DVD release pays detailed attention to Baker's on-set flareups, while demonstrating how he could still produce great on-screen moments when working with the right people -- actress Louise Jameson and director Paddy Russell.
The commentary track sizzles with tales on on-set strife generated by Baker, if you're into learning that stor of thing. Jameson (companion Leela) provides excellent audio, balancing detailed production anecdotes with an intelligent critique of the story, almost 30 years later. She gives a far more satisfactory origin of the name "Leela" than did Leela's creator, writer Chris Boucher, on the "Robots of Death" DVD some years back. Terrance Dicks, always a hoot on DVD, lavishes praise over elements of his own script, while laughing off other elements of the story. If he likes a cliffhanger (the end of Part Three, a funereal Baker oratory), he takes full credit; if he thinks the cliffhanger landed on the wrong beat (the end of Part Two, when two characters awkwardly embrace against an off-camera scream), he'll cheerfully blame the director. Third wheel John Abbott, who played the youngest of the lighthouse keepers, has neither lot to do in the story nor to say on the commentary track, but he does give an interesting account of what it was like for a rookie actor to intrude on Baker's turf.
The best of the extra features is the 35-minute documentary on Terrance Dicks' "Who" career, featuring interviews with producer Barry Letts, old series writer Louis Marks, and current series writer Paul Cornell. Cornell gives a great breakdown of what made the "Fang Rock" script work so aggressively well ("The story has three McGuffins... and two of them are used to defeat the third"). DW book editor Peter Darvill-Evans, who looked nothing at all like I imagined (more like Ric Ocasek than Charles Dickens), describes Dicks' contribution to several decades' worth of DW novels. The closing credits feature a fabulous montage of every iteration of the Dicks-coined phrase "reverse the polarity of the neutron flow", against Jon Pertwee's observation that you could sing the line to the tune of "The Sailor's Hornpipe".
Now that "Doctor Who" has graduated into the 21st century and is working on its second season of new episodes, with modern production values and British TV's most celebrated writers, an episode like "Fang Rock" can easily sink into irrelevance alongside last season's gothic horror fests "The Unquiet Dead" and "The Empty Child". However, aided by the usual wonderful set of extra features, this DVD reminds those of us who've been in the "Who" fandom game for a while just how we got here in the first place.

Daria - Is It College Yet? (2002) Review

Daria-IsItCollegeYet(2002)
Average Reviews:

I love Daria and this movie was a very fitting sign off for the series. However, for some unknown reason, MTV found reason to make numerous small cuts throughout the movie from the original version as it appeared in its original broadcast. Jokes are deleted, natural conversations between characters are reduced to "just the facts, Ma'am." At least one scene, in which Daria decides not to go on a date with Tom in favor of staying home, was totally cut out of the movie. ???
The original soundtrack was also replaced with a generic music backdrop to avoid obtaining video distribution rights for the original music.
I recommend buying the DVD if you have no other way to see the broadcast version. I just hope that someday MTV will someday see fit release it uncensored, as well as complete unedited season releases. (Noggin edits episodes for content).
