Sometimes, in life’s rare occurrances, you get to meet that one person with whom the connection is so unique, that even after months of not speaking, you can still pick up right where you left off. I had such a coffee session with my ex over the weekend. To say things ended well would be a massive lie, but luckily we were both mature enough to just let the other person be. After months of not speaking, I finally decided to reach out before I left the country. But secretly I was terrified of the consequences of my ‘reaching out’ - What if he hates me? What if he doesn’t remember me? What if he doesn’t want to see me? What if he has a ‘what the fuck do you want’ attitude? Oh the endless possibilities.. Then, all the advice I needed were summarised all into one sentence: China is a long way to have regrets. So there I was, sitting in bed with my phone in my hands, typing out an email to him. Two weeks later, still no reply from him. This was exactly what I had predicted, he went ‘what the fuck do you want’ on me. Instead of tormenting myself thinking ‘why, why, why doesn’t he reply’, I decided to simply not think about it. He doesn’t want to reply, ok cool. A week later, the thought that ’China is a long way to have regrets’ kept lingering in my mind. It’s true, did I really want to be sitting all the way in China regretting not having seen him before I left? No I did not. So I decided to give this one last shot, I smsed him. A day later, no reply. Oh boy, I’ve made such a fool of myself, twice. Just when I have completely given up on him, his reply came. Apparently he didn’t get my email, and that a goodbye coffee would be nice. A few days before we were suppose to meet up, I had started to doubt my initial judgement. I wasn’t sure whether this was such a good idea anymore. The amount of time that has elapsed since we last saw each other is almost twice as long as the time we went out for - that is a LONG time. It’s too long for this coffee to not go wrong, not be awkward, and not end badly. But it was too late to back out. Much to my surprise, it wasn’t awkward at all. Conversation flowed, we made each other laugh, it was just like the old days. It couldn’t have gone any better had I planned it. I was so glad that we had this opportunity to chat over coffee, all I ever wanted was for things to end on a good note. But did I have questions? Of course I did. Did I ask them? Of course I didn’t. I had decided months ago that it wouldn’t be worth it to still hang onto the past. After all, what is the point? The whole two hours felt like two old friends having a great time catching up. Except that it wasn’t. We are Exes. We are not friends. At best, we are two people who get on exceptionally well. Could we be friends? Maybe. When two people break up, and when it’s been established that they are not arch enemies, where does the love go? Does it go to their next girlfriend or boyfriend? Or will there always be something there? The goodbye felt awkward. After an awkward side hug, it was as if his pants were on fire, he quickly uttered the words ‘Ok I’m gonna go now. Cheers.’ He walked away before I could even get a word in. That’s it? That’s all I get?! Now it was MY chance to go ‘what the fuck?!’ Sadness soon came over me. That was it. A year and a bit of knowing him all came down to that one coffee, that one last awkward hug, that one emotionless ‘cheers’. I asked myself, why is this bothering me? Do I still have intense feelings for him? No. Do I still want to be with him? No. What was it then? It was the basic human need to feel wanted and loved. He walked away as if I would still see him next week. The truth be told, it’ll be years before we’ll get to see each other again, if ever. All in all, it was a good day. I enjoyed his company and I was reminded of why I ever liked [...]
