Last month I was approached by an unfamiliar dog and cat product
website called Mr. Chewy about objectively reviewing their

are a great website that is very well organized and easy to use,
they have a wide and comprehensive product selection including

Mr. Chewy even offers a great deal of more healthy and organic alternatives such as; Taste of the Wild and Natural Balance. These organic options are perfect for your dog or cats happiness as well as health. You will find a great number of pet foods brands here that are difficult to find in your standard pet store and cheaper than you will find offline.
Your order will be delivered straight to your door with no trips to a pet store, and if you purchase more than $49 at a time they will ship your order for free, all other orders are a simple and affordable flat rate of $4.95. You can even set up a set delivery schedule free of charge where Mr Chewy will send you a products at set intervals. Mr Chewy is a household brand that is passionate about helping animals. They are a relatively small business and care about their customers and the quality of their service, as a small business owner myself I always suggest that people support small business as much as possible. Business’ usually start out with their love of an industry and product and somewhere along the line a few of them lose sight of this and become giant corporate money hungry machines. Mr. Chewy is driven by their love of pets and animals and it shows in their service and products. Mr Chewy often works along side non profit organizations and shelters that help support animal welfare, you can even give them a call to help discuss how they can help your own animal welfare organization.
Mr. Chewy includes a great Refer A Friend program. If your friend uses your Refer A Friend Code they get 10% off their order and 10$ for each new friend that orders will be donated to one of three great organizations; Animal League Of America, Best Friends Animal Society, and Bideawee. There is currently a nationwide pet food recall in effect. It is considered a voluntary recall and it includes 14 different pet food brands that are sold in the United States and Canada. The recall is due to a possible Salmonella contamination.
This Salmonella outbreak is affecting people (not dogs) who handle the food. A dog’s digestive system will almost certainly kill off something like Salmonella but people are adapted to cooked food and no longer have the ability to kill off such bacteria on our own. Much of the dried meat in dog food is raw and even though it isn’t moist can still contain living Salmonella, guard yourself by thoroughly washing your hands after handling your pet food.
The Pet Food Brands that were involved in the Salmonella Recall are:

I love eating chocolate as much as the next person, unfortunately so do my dogs Kratos and Kalypso. Chocolate is nothing more than sweet and delicious poison to your dog, and few dogs can resist eating chocolate if they manage to get a hold of some.
Chocolate is made from cocoa beans and these beans include a naturally occurring stimulant called theobromine. If your dog ingests a large amount of this stimulate found in chocolate they can get very sick and even possibly die.
What exactly is a large enough amount of chocolate to harm your dog? How much chocolate a dog can eat without getting sick depends on the dog’s weight and what type of chocolate was eaten. The darker the chocolate the more theobromine it has. According the the American Animal Hospital Association, 2 to 3 ounces of baking chocolate or 16 to 24 ounces of milk chocolate can be fatal to a 20 pound dog, a heavier dog should be able to eat slightly more. While white chocolate is likely safer due to having a very high fat and sugar content it can still make your dog very ill. You should call your vet if your dog ingests any amount of chocolate even if it isn’t enough to be considered a lethal amount.
Some effects that can be caused from theobromine range from simple vomiting and diarrhea to excessive thirst, urination, dehydration, and in worse cases can lead to hyperactivity, seizures, or even lead to death.
There is an alternative to chocolate however that is perfectly safe for your pet. Found amongst the baking aisle in your grocery store is an item called carob. Carob looks, smells, and tastes like chocolate but has none of the theobromine stimulate that can make your dog ill. In addition to being safe for your dog carob contains far less fat than chocolate, no caffeine, and has 60% less calorie, carob is a great chocolate substitute for people as well as dogs.
You can find many recipes online to make dog treats out of carob or you can simply try using carob in place of chocolate in your favorite recipes. If you don’t want to make homemade cookies you can always melt down some carob chips and dip your favorite dog treat into it instead, just dip and cool on parchment paper before serving (carob chips don’t melt as easily as real chocolate due to a lower fat content, to aid in melting you can add a spoonful of virgin coconut oil if you wish).

This unfortunate story is a case and point example of the negative consequences; to both the animal and society, caused by unjust and ineffective Breed Specific Legislation.
The Breed Specific Legislation in Nick Santino’s hometown force the actor to end the life of his American Pitbull Terrier, simply due to the dogs breed, not because the dog was being aggressive or dangerous in anyway.
A few hours after putting the dog down Nick could not handle the pain he was feeling and decided to commit suicide, stating in a final letter: “Today I betrayed my best friend and put down my best friend, Rocco trusted me and I failed him. He didn’t deserve this.”
Rest In Peace Nick And Rocco, I Hope You Are Together Again.

Oregano oil (Organum vulgare) is derived from the same herb used for cooking. You’ve probably tasted it in pasta sauce recipes. Not only is it a tasty spice but is also used to treat a variety of health conditions, ranging from allergies to yeast infections, viruses and many conditions in between. This essential oil is known for its antiseptic, anti fungal, antiviral and antibacterial properties. It has so many health benefits, many refer to it as one of Mother Nature’s most powerful healthy oils.
In the old world, (Greece and Crete)oil of Oregano was prized
for its ability to slow down food spoilage through
its anti-bacterial, anti-fungal, anti-parasitic and
anti-oxidant activity. The related herbs thyme and marjoram
sold in most North American supermarkets, are often
mis-labeled as oregano and possess very little of wild
oregano’s miraculous healing properties.
Oregano contains an important ingredient know as Carvacrol
which is like a natural phenol, a product used for the
sterilization of surgical tools. In fact, it believed to be
more effective than carbolic acid, a sterilization product
used in hospitals. The isomeric phenols (primarily carvacrol)
in oregano oil in dilutions as low as 1/50,000 destroys
Candida albicans, the Aspergillus mold, Staphylococcus,
Campylobacter, Klebsiella, E.coli, Giardia, Pseudomonas, and
Proteus. Another phenol constituent, thymol, boosts the
immune system. These compounds also act as free radical
scavengers
(shield against toxins) thus preventing further tissue damage
while encouraging healing. It also contains Flavonoids, and
Terpenes which all work synergesticly with the thymol and
carvacrol to work the wonders it works.
In the case of parasites, oil of oregano has had success neutralizing worms, amoeba, and protozoan, in fact, researchers in Mexico found that oregano oil possesses strong anti-parasitic actions, especially against Giardia!
In the book “Herbal Renaissance” , author Steven Foster credits oregano as having “been employed to treat indigestion, diarrhea, nervous tension, insect bites, toothache, earache, rheumatism, and coughs due to whooping cough and bronchitis (primarily for it’s antispasmodic effects).”
In “The Cure is in the Cupboard”, Cass Ingram, D.O., has written a book that is dedicated to unveiling the health benefits of oregano and oil of oregano. He notes that “wild oregano is a veritable natural mineral treasure-house, containing a density of minerals that would rival virtually any food”. Oregano is rich in a long list of minerals that includes calcium, magnesium, zinc, iron, potassium, copper, boron, and manganese. Vitamins C and A (beta carotene) and niacin also are contained in oregano.
Skin conditions can be improved with the application of oregano oil. Ingram explains the astonishing discovery that “oil of oregano outright destroys all variety of fungi and yeasts, regardless of where they reside.” Oregano is a “hot” oil and may cause a reddening of the skin or may produce a burning or stinging of the skin. It is best to dilute the oil when using it externally with a pure carrier oil such as raw coconut oil, virgin olive oil, almond oil, etc. before applying directly to your dog’s skin and avoid getting the oil near the eyes, and genitals.
Additional uses for oregano and oil of oregano are multi-dimensional. It has been found helpful in combating diarrhea, intestinal gas, and digestive problems, as well as breathing difficulties.
Oil of oregano can immediately help against bee stings and many venomous bites until medical attention can be obtained.
Oregano is an excellent antibacterial agent. Its volatile oils are highly active against the majority of pathogenic bacteria, including staph, strep, and E.coli. Georgetown University Medical Center conducted research into the benefits of using oil or oregano and here is what they found. Georgetown University Medical Center (2001, October 11). It is believed that oregano oil may protect against drug-resistant bacteria. It works as a powerful antibacterial without creating mutant strains of drug-resistant bacteria, and it has none of the debilitating side effects of pharmaceutical antibiotics.
Furthermore, fungal resistance to oregano oil is exceptionally rare. Oregano is such a potent anti-fungal agent that it is capable of destroying even resistant fungal forms such as the mutated fungi which result from antibiotic therapy.
Researchers studied the effect of Oregano on staphylococcus bacteria which is becoming antibiotic resistant. They discovered oregano at low dosages helped to inhibit growth of staphylococcus bacteria in test tubes. The growth inhibition was equal to standard antibiotics.
Another test using mice was used. Eighteen mice were infected with the staphylococcus bacteria. Six of the mice were treated with high potency oil of oregano. Thirty days later 50% of the mice had survived. Six other mice received oil of oregano mixed with Carvacrol, which is an antibacterial component to oregano. All 6 mice died after 21 days. The other 6 mice were treated with olive oil and no other additives. All 6 mice died 3 days later. The mice treated with the oil of oregano alone survived. This study has also been corroborated by other research teams elsewhere.
Carvacrol, Thymols, Flavonoids, and Terpenes are Mother
Nature’s antihistamines and decongestants. Super Strength Oil
of Oregano has over 70% Carvacrol by weight. That is an
abundance of healing power. Please beware of cheap
imitations. Young Living’s oil of Oregano is 100% pure and
therapeutic/medical grade. It may safely be used internally
and topically.
Other brands of oregano oil are often unsafe and adulterated.
The benefits of oregano have gone largely unnoticed and under publicized for far too long. As Ingram notes, oregano is “one of the world’s finest natural medicines, that is if it’s true oregano.” So while oregano may hold the answer for a number of your dog’s health questions (or even your own), be sure that it is in fact the real thing. Make sure the oil is medical/theraputic grade and safe to take internally.
Please note -Dr. Jeannie and The Whole Dog only use and recommend the use of Young Living Essential oils.
Oregano is one of the most diverse health aids available. Unfortunately, however, most of the oregano that consumers are familiar with contains only trace quantities of the actual species of the plant, or in some cases, none at all, so, buyer beware. These significant health benefits are unattainable if the oregano is not the true substance.
The body of positive evidence for oregano oil as a major antibiotic is growing. Among 52 plant oils tested, oregano was considered to have “pharmacologic” action against common bugs such as Candida albicans (yeast), E. coli, Salmonella enterica and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. [Journal Applied Microbiology, Volume 86, June 1999] Pseudomonas is a type of germ that is getting more difficult to treat as it has developed strains that are resistant to antibiotic drugs.
•Oil of oregano at relatively low doses was found to be efficacious against Staphylococcus bacteria and was comparable in its germ-killing properties to antibiotic drugs such as streptomycin, penicillin and vancomycin. [Science Daily 10/11/2001]
•Researchers at the Department of Food Science at the University of Tennessee reported that, among various plant oils, oil of oregano exhibited the greatest antibacterial action against common pathogenic germs such as Staph, E. coli and Listeria. [Journal Food Protection, Volume 64, July 2001]
•British researchers reported oregano oil had antibacterial activity against 25 different bacteria. [Journal Applied Microbiology, Volume 88, February 2000]
•Of more recent interest are reports showing that carvacrol from oil of oregano kills spores, such as Bacillus cereus and Bacillus anthracis (anthrax). [Archives Microbiology, Volume 174, October 2000; Quarterly Review Biology, Volume 73, March 1998] Bacillus cereus is considered to be from the same species as Bacillus anthracis (anthrax). [Applied Environmental Microbiology, Volume 66, June 2000] In tests of antibiotics and antiseptics, Bacillus cereus is often used in studies in lieu of the anthrax strain. [University of Michigan News & Information Service, Sept. 23, 1998]
•The growing problem of antibiotic resistance has health authorities extremely concerned. It is already the case that various germs are showing resistance to vancomycin, particularly to intestinal bacteria (Enterococcal species) among hospitalized patients. [Southern Medical Journal, Volume 94, August 2001]
•Vancomycin is considered to be the most potent antibiotic available and is withheld from use as a drug of last resort. Drug resistance does not develop against naturally-occurring antibiotics such as garlic and oil of oregano.
