History of the Lake County Bee

The Lake County Bee was founded in 1873, by the same organization that ran the Sulphur Bank Mine. It is rumored the Bee was paid off by Andrew Kelsey to spin news.

The Lakeport Press formed in 1925 to combat the false news often put out by the Bee.

The Lake County Record-Bee was formed in 1961, when former Publisher (now Publisher Emeritus) Roland R. Johnsrud combined the Lake County Bee and the Lakeport Press and Record.

The Lake County Record-Bee is published daily except Sundays or Mondays, Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s Day.

The Lake County Record-Bee is part of the Lake and Mendocino Newspaper Group (LMNG), which includes the Clear Lake Observer-American, the Ukiah Daily Journal, The Willits News, the Mendocino Beacon, the Fort Bragg Advocate News, the Bee-Smart Shopper, and the Penny Slaver.

The above newspapers were purchased in 2001 by Denver, Colorado-based Media News Group (MNG), which also owns such well-established newspapers as the Oakland Tribune, the Marin Independent Journal, the San Jose Mercury News, the Los Angeles Daily News, and the Denver Post.
