My dog, Sophie and I are a retired avalanche rescue team. I retired from full-time ski patrolling after 20+ years and still keep my hand in with dog training and EMT training. Sophie grew up on the mountain and isn't convinced that she's retired and still loves to tear it up with the young pups
Should you be wearing a ski/snowboard helmet when you're on the
mountain? Probably. Helmets aren't a magic bullet that will protect
you in all circumstances but, like seatbelts, they may be the
difference between minor and severe injury. As a ski patroller I've
seen the difference they make in the reduction of head injuries on
the slopes. As they've become more popular over the years and
become the standard wear for the recreational skier/rider as well
as racers head injuries have decreased and awareness of the dangers
of head injuries has increased.

An avalanche beacon can greatly increase your chances of being
found if you're buried in an avalanche. It won't prevent burial and
it won't warn you of avalanche conditions, you need good
backcountry skills for that, but it will make you possible to find
if you use it correctly.

As adults we know that ski/snowboard helmets should be part of
everyone's gear on the slopes. We know that crashing is part of the
sport and that to get better you are going to have to take some
risks and take some falls. Hopefully, with the right protective
gear including helmets, those falls will only result in bumps and
sore muscles. So how do we get kids to wear the helmets we know
that they should be wearing? Not just wear, but keep on all day?
Here's a few tips that will help keep their noggins safe.

Before you head off for some winter sport in the backcountry you

When you travel in avalanche terrain, either by skis, snowboard,
snowshoes, or snowmobile, an avalanche beacon is an essential part
of your gear. A beacon isn't a magic shield that is going to
automatically protect you, but used correctly it can greatly
increase your chances of being found alive.
