(More customer reviews)I had this installed for several weeks before the dogs got in and took care of my chickens for me. Anyway, it kept the water precisely at the level intended. Very simple design and I feel that hard water deposits could, in time, cause it to malfunction. Mine was on city water which is hard enough. It would take a much longer time to see what happens. But the system works on the weight of water in the bowl. The bowl pulls down against a spring that pushes the bowl up. As the water level drops, the spring is able to push the bowl and eventually push the shrader valve needle up enough to allow water to leak through the valve and weigh down the bowl with water, closing the valve again. It only takes a millimeter or less to open and close the valve, so the water stays at a very constant level because it only takes a ounce or two of water loss for the spring to overcome the shrader valve needle spring. So, in time, as the shrader valve accumulates deposits, I expect the water level to change more drastically, having to overcome a sticky valve. I suppose it's possible that the valve may not close if a particle happens to wedge into the needle seat. The thing does come with a fine mesh filter to prevent such particles from reaching the valve.
4 stars because I'm kind of skeptical on the valving design. But shrader valves are pretty reliable so who knows.

I've had one for more than five years and not once has a squirrel made it to the feeders. A note of caution though: if you are using a shepherd's hook, this product will NOT work unless the hooks at the top of the feeder are removable as you need a straight line down to slide this over. The newest shepherd's hook that I bought does not have a removable hook and I had to purchase another type of baffle which is not nearly as effective.

(More customer reviews)This product might be convenient, but I recommend NOT using it. It contains red dye and a preservative, both of which may be damaging to hummingbirds. You do not need red food coloring in nectar in order to attract hummingbirds. Most hummingbird feeders have plenty of red on them to attract the birds. A simple mixture of 4 parts water to 1 part granulated sugar is all that is needed for hummingbird nectar. Never use honey or sugar substitutes. It's simple to make nectar and keep refrigerated and certainly safe for the birds. We prefer safeguarding the health of these little birds rather than the supposed convenience of this product.

I recommend getting the mesh bags for feeders; otherwise, the birds get frustrated with trying to get the seed out of the small holes in plastic feeders.And then they do leave the seed to rot. I've tried Kaytee as well and both products are equally relished.

When full, the water level is no more than 1.5 inches and it seems to keep cool even in the Florida sun. It is very solid and has a good flat bottom. I have 2 - one is hanging from a tree branch and the other is sitting atop a pedestal. The hanging wire chain is very easy to remove - its just 3 hooks in 3 holes around the rim of the bath. The birds like to drink and splash around in them and the terracota exterior fits well in the yard. Cleaning the bird bath is easy due to the high gloss interior - the birds do leave droppings in the bath and sediment can collect even in one day. I refresh the water almost every day after I have rinsed it out - it's a breeze to clean with the glazed finish.

I've always had a small problem with squirrels in my roses, but they only ate the ones that were easy to get to and I was content to let them have them, since there were so many others. Then an adolescent squirrel fell in love with them and braved the thorns to eat EVERY ROSE on my bushes. He'd wait until new roses budded and snatch them before they bloomed, no matter how high they were. He'd pull stalks over to get them and was wrecking my bushes. As an animal lover, I knew that I had to find an alternative I could live with.
Deer Off is amazing. I sprayed it ONCE (about 6 weeks ago) and the squirrels now give my plants wide berth. The smell must be offensive to them, but the scent is mild to my human nose and faded to nothing about a minute after spraying. I HIGHLY recommend it. I didn't expect it to work this well!

My in-laws got me a Fido-Shock and I set it up. During install I decided to test it out, so I held the wire and waited for a zap... nothing. I double checked the wiring, held it again, and... nothing.
As I stood there with the wire in my hand, perplexed, my dog jumped on me. ZAP!
Aagh!
Yelp!
I had failed to take into considerationt he fact that my rubber shoes didn't gound me. When the dog jumped on me she grounded us both, and we both got zapped.
Getting shocked is unpleasant, more in an unnatural way than in a painful way.
The fence was immediatly effective. I think they each got shocked one more time and learned their lesson quick. After three days I unplugged the Fido-Shock unit but kept the fence up. The fence was a psychological deterrent and worked for years.
Eventually my wife took the fence down and six month later the dogs were back to their old tricks. My wife didn't let me set the fence back up, as she preferred dead plants to "prison wire" around the garden.
Maybe 5 years later I set up a new garden in the back yard that the dogs loved to tromp around in. I set the fence up and the dogs immediatly began ignoring it. I don't think they ever got shocked.
I left it plugged in for three days anyway (just in case) and have had it off ever since.
Fido-Shock works great. The disadvantages are that you can see the "prison wire" and stakes, and you might accidently shock yourself.

Further, in preference tests, hummingbirds consistently choose plain sugar syrup (one part cane sugar to four parts water, nothing else added) over packaged mixes or homemade syrup containing dye, presumably because the dye tastes wrong to them. They also do not like beet sugar.
If hummingbirds seem to prefer this mix over plain sugar water, it's probably because the sugar water has fermented--it must be changed and the feeder cleaned as soon as it starts getting cloudy--and the fresh mix is the lesser of two evils. Many, many people report getting several times more hummingbirds after switching from this mix to plain sugar water.
A 1:4 sugar water syrup is nearly identical to natural flower nectars from plants that hummingbirds use. The contents of Perky-Pet's mix are not listed, since none of the protective government regulations apply to animal food, but analyses of the mix usually show a host of bacteria and other contaminants, presumably from unregulated and unsanitary handling practices. Sugar is cheap--why take a chance on the health of your hummingbirds?
I would rate this product with negative stars if it were possible.
