go wrong with this one. Its very easy to use and no setup is
required. The batteries last forever (well maybe not forever) and
you can get alot done with out having to recharge. It has a
wonderful steady shot feature which removes some of the shaking
your hands make when you are shooting. It also has other great
features. It has a 20x optical zoom (the lens actually moving) and
a 360x digital zoom (the camera enlarging the picture), It is
Control-L (LANC)compatible (which is similar to Panasonics 5-pin
control system), so you can edit directly from the camcorder (if
you plan on using a computer to edit), an LCD is attached to the
side (you know, the screen that pops out), but it also has one of
Sony's best features, the 0 LUX Nightshot. This enables you to film
in TOTAL darkness. Its a wonderful feature. This camera is alot of
fun, its light weight, and has rather good quality (but is nothing
compared to MiniDV or Digital8). If you want a good 8mm camera, and
don't want to sell the farm, this is it. If you want really good
quality and want to edit on your new iMac, get a MiniDV camera or a
Digital8. Keep in mind, you can still edit on a computer using a
video capture card (a new one is comming out soon from 3dfx
www.3dfx.com). So this is a purchase you shall benefit from. I
STRONGLY suggest this purchase.

Win98 but when I upgraded to XP, it did't fly. Sony's suggestion
was to use 2000 drivers, but that didn't work either. XP has been
out over a year and still Sony has not written drivers for it. If
you don't use XP this is an easy to use device, but if you
do...beware.

pretty darn good. These days that is not the case. The past few times
that I have bought these tapes to record movies from the satellite
dish, there have been to many flaws with the tape. One problem has
been a line through the middle of the picture, like you sometimes
have when you rent a movie thats about 20 years old,and also there
have been jumping pictures, and small audio flaws as well.I use
various brands of videotape,so I know that the problem lies here
with the Sony videotape.Basically the record about as well as a
tape you have recorded on over and over and over. They show too much
wear way too soon.Get Maxell tapes instead.

(More customer
reviews)I am a point and shoot type: Kids/parties/family
stuff. No pro training or desire. I just wanted a new camcorder to
video the little ones as they grew up.
I haven't bought a camcorder in 10+ years and I did a lot of
research. I was ready to buy a Sony DCR TRV38, but the new DVD
recorders had just come out. These are 2 different categories of
camcorders, but each has its appeal. I decided to give the DVD201 a
try for the convenience of direct DVD recording. I have compared
the two (borrowed my parents' TRV38 for comparison) side by side.
Here are my impressions:
1. Size: the DVD201 is smaller and felt good in hand. Very easy
controls.
2. The DVD201 didn't have a touch screen LED. That's good for me!!
Its LED screen is 2.5" versus 3.5" on the TRV38. Sony has
incorporated a new technology for the LED that lets you see it in
bright sunlight. This feature was EXCELLENT!! It actually worked. I
never had to use the viewfinder because of screen "washout." It
easily beat the TRV38 in that department. The TRV38's LED was
unusable in bright sunlight.
3. Image quality: Hands-down, the TRV38 wins here. I was a bit
disappointed with the DVD201. Why? Read the review of the Sony
DCR-HC40 at camcorderinfo.com and you'll see that they weren't
impressed with the CCD (sensor) of that camcorder (it got
unsatisfactory marks for low-light quality / and video quality in
general). Unfortunately, that CCD is the SAME ONE USED IN THE
DVD201. In order to make the camcorder smaller, Sony had to reduce
the size of the CCD to 1/5". They claim that "new technology"
compensates for the smaller sensor......NOT REALLY!! The larger
1/4.7" CCD of the TRV38 shows in the quality of the video. Both
have the same 690K effective pixel resolution, so what gives? Does
it matter? Not really!! The bottom line is that the TRV38 provides
richer, fuller, and brighter video quality than the DVD201 (for
$200 less). The DVD201 video looked gray and washed-out compared to
the TRV38. Maybe it's the media itself; mini-DV versus mini-DVD.
Maybe it's the sensor. Maybe it's the recording format. It doesn't
matter why......the video quality doesn't compare to cheaper units.
[side note: the TRV38 has consistently earned very high marks for
video quality and low-light ability]
4. As far as low-light ability, the TRV38 "wins" here too, but not
by that much. I thought the DVD201 was comparable here with the
TRV38. In low light, both videos were a bit grainy. The "Super
nightshot plus" gimmicks were just that; gimmicks. The DVD201 does
look better due to color being incorporated into the nightshot IR
scene. Not a big deal, however.
5. Here's where the new Sony shines: The convenience of the DVD201
is unmatched. Simply pop in a mini-DVD (expensive media, however)
and record away. Unfortunately, you have to "finalize" the disc
before playing it in a DVD player. The manual warns that this
process could take 1 minute to 2 hours?!? HUH? I have burned
several so far and it never took more than 3 minutes. Here's the
real kicker: Pop the finalized disc into your DVD player and watch
it right now!! It's that simple. You will be enjoying your videos
while everyone else with a mini-dv camcorder is still trying to
hook up the darn camera to the TV with cables. THIS IS THE SINGLE
BIGGEST REASON TO BUY THIS CAMCORDER..........Convenience. You
don't have to download anything to your computer, compile it, burn
a DVD (on the computer), and then pop it into the DVD player.
6. My kids love to watch their home videos...right now!! This
camera eliminates the need to hook up anything to your TV with
cables (where little hands can break an expensive camera). If you
loathe the thought of taking video on a mini-DV, downloading it to
the computer via hotwire, compiling/editing your obviously amateur
video, re-writing it to a DVD with a DVD burner, and ONLY then get
to enjoy it "effortlessly" on your TV, then the DVD201 is for
you.
7. Here's the downfall, however; Not much editing ability with the
DVD201. Using a DVD-R disc, you burn the DVD as you are taking the
video. If you use a DVD-RW, you can download the video to the
computer, erase, edit, and rewrite with it. (Apparently, the
supplied editing software sucks, but I can't comment because I
haven't used it). I will probably never edit much, so I don't mind.
If you love to edit, think twice about this camera.
PROs: Small size, good feel, excellent LED screen, ultra convenient
DVD media (can eliminate computer interface if desired), perfect if
you don't care about doing much editing, excellent image
stabilization, "finished product" for kids' review very quick
(shoot the video, finalize disk, ready for DVD player, DONE!!),
good sound quality
CONs: Video quality not as good as cheaper units (looks
gray/washed-out), expensive media, sound of DVD spinning captured
on tape (low "whir" audible), a bit grainy low-light performance,
no wind filter, not much editing ability
HERE'S THE QUESTION TO ASK YOURSELF: Is the convenience of the DVD
media worth an extra 200 bucks at the expense of video quality? I'm
still debating. Don't get me wrong. The video quality is good, but
not great. The DVD201 is a good point and shoot camcorder, but
isn't video quality what it's all about? Maybe. Maybe not.
Convenience is a huge factor for some of us. One thing is for sure;
the DVD201 beats the heck out of the JVC VHS-C I'm replacing. Of
course that camcorder is 10+ years old.
BOTTOM LINE: Who will buy this camcorder? People who place
convenience at the top of their list of features and are willing to
sacrifice some video quality to get it!!!
Hope this helps. By the way, I'm debating whether to return my
DVD201 or not.

after checking them out at the store I decided on the 32. The
Samsung 353 was also in the running but one look in the store and I
knew Sony was the way to go. I am glad I decided on the 32 because
the only real difference was the CCD, which is 340k instead of 680k
effective. It turns out the 32 does such a good job with the 340k I
can't tell the difference, and for $150 less. The other only real
difference is the color viewfinder on the 42, but who uses a
viewfinder anymore. It doesn't come with a firewire (iLink) cable
so be prepared to purchase one, especially if you have a mac. I am
happy with our choice and look forward to many edited videos to
share with the family.

have found my copy to be fine. Is it a Zeiss? No. Is it that
different from a Zeiss? No. Is it cheaper than a Zeiss or Sony G?
For sure! I got mine on sale for $200.
I've been shooting with my copy for a few months and, am happy as a
clam that it cost so little but delivers high quality images.
A good solid performer. If you get it on sale, I would call it an
excellent lens.
One final thought on the zoom ring: It is tighter on this lens
compared to other Sony, Minolta, and Konica Minolta lenses I own.
But I like this as the lens has no lens creep at all. But if you
are use to a looser zoom ring, it may seem too tight.

someone else to review it, but since no one has, here goes:
The case is just the right size to fit the thin Sony T7 camera, and
yet also quite protective. I'd expected it to be soft, but the
sides are both firm and padded enough to really safeguard the
camera. This is good, because our previous soft case tended to let
the camera lens cover get pushed open and thereby run down the
battery when not in use. There is also a good quality zipper to
somewhat seal the case against dust and moisture.
My only quibble is that this case does not have a way to be
fastened to a belt. But it's great for protecting the T7 in an auto
glovebox, or in a bag.

(More customer

flash and the delay in shutter response with the flash.
The flash consistantly over performs resulting in slightly over
exposed photos. If your subject is at a further distance the flash
issue won't be so noticable, but it is a definate issue on closer
images.
When using the flash there is a significant delay in shutter
response. It is quite annoying and the result is that you'll lose
some pictures. By the time the camera responds when the flash is in
use the subject has moved, unless of couse the subject is
inanimate.
If you are particular about your photos then this will be important
to you, but if you are more casual user then the flash issue may
not concern you as much.
Beyond these two annoyances I have been quite happy with my camera.
The macro capability is very good, versatility with lenses is
handy, menus are user friendly, the large LCD is a winner. Photos
come out quite nicely, and with a good printer you'll be very
pleased with the results.

living room floor and connected the network cable to my home
network switch. I could not access the camera using a computer
running vista but could with the mac and an XP machine. I installed
the java controls and the camera was easy to control. Next was to
configure the network router to allow access from outside. The
documentation included with the camera is adequate but the
documentation included with the slingbox was easier to follow.
After that I mounted the camera on a tripod and set it at the
window. I could control the camera with the computer at the office.
At Christmas I tried unsuccessfully to access the camera from an XP

The Sony SNC-RZ30N surveillance camera is a reliable, economical
and high-quality solution for demanding interactive surveillance
and is designed primarily for indoor use. User's should note,
however, that the camera's image sensor may become permanently
damaged if exposed to long hours of direct sunlight or halogen
light, so the camera should not be mounted or pointed directly at
the sun or other bright-light sources. This camera also requires a
PC that is not included in this package in order to take advantage
of the Internet functionality.About Surveillance Camera Technical
Features Lux rating is the measurement used to indicate how
sensitive a camera is to light, and stands for the level of light
reflected off a piece of paper by a candle from one meter away.
Thus a sensitivity of three would mean a camera could generate an
acceptable picture of a piece-of-paper-sized object that was
illuminated by the equivalent of three candles from one meter away.
The lower the level, the better the camera's ability to work in
low-light conditions. The camera's resolution should be greater
than or equal to the resolution supported by the system's recorder
or monitor. The S/N, or signal to noise ratio, is an important
measure of a camera's quality. A poor camera, low-light conditions
or poor wiring causes "noise" which consumes processing power and
disk space. A camera with a wide dynamic range is ideal, especially
for recording areas in which both indoor and outdoor light are
present. CCD (charge-coupled device) sensors provide high-quality
images that are less susceptible to noise. CMOS (complimentary
metal-oxide semiconductor) sensors offer less image quality, but
are usually more cost-effective and energy efficient.About IP
Cameras An IP camera can be used to project images and video
directly through a computer's Web browser for remote monitoring. An
IP camera, unlike a web cam, contains the IP and Web page within it
and can often be added to a network without additional
configuration or software. Combined with a network video recorder,
an IP camera can be used to construct a reliable video surveillance
system.About Pan/Tilt Cameras A Pan/Tilt Camera has the ability to
pan ("move" horizontally), or tilt ("move" vertically). IP cameras
often have pan/tilt capability. A pan/tilt camera is ideal for
monitoring of situations that need a continual real-time adjustment
of the views.

The picture quality is excellent during the day and night. If you
make the purchase, you'll need another memory stick. I got the 64
meg stick (Ken Tracey) and could take 112 shots at the highest
resolution. I blew up a few of my pictures to 8x10 and the quality
was quite good. If your planning on doing that though, I'd
recommend the 2.1 meg Sony. All in all, I'm a happy camper

(More customer

camera with me. This is smaller than my cell phone (a Kyocera
2255), and fits beautifully in a pocket or around the neck with the
provided strap. The camera also uses standard AAA batteries (2
rechargable batteries and a charger come with the camera), which is
great in a pinch. The use of standard batteries is why I chose this
over the Casio Exlim S2 model, which is similar in actual size and
features (though the sony feels smaller because it isn't as
tall).
I've used numerous other digicams (some I've owned, some I've
borrowed from friends for short trips): Canon A10, Fuji 2800Z,
Minolta S404, Kyocera S2, Canon S110, Canon S230, Canon S200, Sony
DSC-U53, Canon S30, Sony DSC-U20, Nikon 885, Nikon 4500, Nikon
775... and this Sony U30 ranks somewhere in the middle as far as
image quality. It (like most Sony digicams) leans towards
oversaturating images, particularly outdoor shots, and the jpeg
compression is more extreme than it should be (image sizes are
around 500k for 2.0mp images in best quality) which robs the camera
of detail, but it is fine for 4x6 prints, which is all you are
likely to be using a camera like this for. I do have hope that Sony
will offer a higher-quality jpeg option someday with a firmware
upgrade (are you reading this, Sony?).
The camera focuses fairly quickly by digicam standards (about 1/2 -
2/3 seconds), and the shot to shot time seems excellent. Movie mode
is poor at 160x120 resolution, but its better than nothing. You're
not getting a camera like this for movies, so it's something I look
at as more of an unexpected perk than a drawback.
The biggest drawbacks, of course, are the lack of zoom and a
somewhat weak flash (though the flash isn't useless, it's not as
robust as a full digicam)... these are acceptable tradeoffs,
considering the image quality is quite good and the ease-of-use is
exemplary.
The differences between this and the previous generation Cybershot
(the U20) are minor, but are nice to have. The U30 seems to have
slightly faster electronics (focusing, shot-to-shot, saving,
etc...), the U30 supports Memory Stick Pro (memory sticks above
128mb), and the U30 has a small mirror on the front that makes it
easy to frame up self-portraits. Like I said, none of these are
features worth upgrading for if you already have a U20, but if you
don't have either camera, they are nice perks, since the two
cameras are both selling at the same price right now.
I plan to get a second, prosumer grade digicam (probably a Fuji
S5000 or S7000) when the next generation arrives on the market this
fall, but this camera will probably still get the lion's share of
my time because it will ALWAYS be with me. No camera--no matter how
expensive or how many bells and whistles it has--does you any good
if it's on the shelf at home when you are out in the world and come
across a good photo op. With this sony, I never have to worry about
missing a shot I want.

Sony DSCU30/L Cyber-shot 2MP
Digital Camera (Blue)
The Sony Cybershot DSC-U30 digital camera is small and light enough
to slip in your pocket to snap photos wherever you roam. It
features a 2-megapixel resolution, fast start-up to capture shots
almost instantaneously, and a movie mode. It comes in two other
colors:silver and dark gray.
Optics and Resolution The Cybershot U30 features a 2-megapixel
Super HAD (hole accumulation diod) CCD that captures excellent
image quality by allowing more light to pass through to each pixel,
increasing sensitivity and reducing image noise. It has two
resolution modes: high (1632 x 1224) for prints up to 8 x 10
inches, and low (640 x 480) for e-mailing to friends and family. A
fixed focus camera, the Cybershot U30 has no optical or digital
zoom.
Movie Mode In addition to taking still photos, the Cybershot U30
can also record up to 15 seconds of 160 x 112 MPEG video (without
audio). The QuickTime Motion JPEG format offers a limited
resolution, which is great for capturing a short movie that can be
e-mailed to friends and family, but is no replacement for a true
camcorder.
More Features The Cybershot U30 has a fast start-up time of 0.9
seconds, enabling you to capture those important shots that other
cameras might miss. The camera includes 5 scene modes (soft snap,
illumination snap, twilight, active outdoor, and vivid nature) and
pre-flash metering, which illuminates the subject and calculates
exposure through the lens directly from the CCD for accurate
calculation for a flash-lit shot.
Other features include:
1.0-inch LCD for reviewing shots
VGA burst mode captures five 640 x 480 frames
Built-in flash with auto, forced on, forced off, and red-eye
reduction modes
Shutter speed: 1/8 - 1/2000 seconds
Picture effects: solarize, black and white, sepia, and negative
art
Automatic ISO and white balance settings
Storage and Transfer Images can be stored on the included 8 MB
Memory Stick, which can store approximately 15 images at 1632 x
1224 pixels. The Cyber-shot DSC-P92 is also compatible with
optional Memory Stick PRO media, which can extend data capacity up
to 1 GB.
Images can be downloaded to either a Mac or PC via ultrafast USB
2.0, which means it can be connected to any USB-compatible Windows
Me/2000/XP and Mac OS 8.6 or later computer without installing any
software. When used with USB 1.1 connection, transfer will slow to
USB 1.1 rate.
Power and Size The camera is powered by 2 AAA batteries
(rechargeable NiMH batteries included). It measures 3.3 by 1.6 by
1.1 inches and weighs 4.3 ounces (including batteries).
What's In The Box This package includes the Cybershot DSC-U30
digital camera, 8 MB Memory Stick, neck strap, 2 AAA rechargeable
NiMH batteries, battery charger (BC-CS2), and USB cable. The
included CD-ROM features Pixela Image Mixer for Sony v1.5 and USB
drivers for Windows and Mac.

(More customer
reviews)We are very pleased with this housing and
accessories kit. The housing is easy to use.
Just a note: on our third dive the camera wouldn't turn on inside
the housing, but would work once it was taken out. We thought that
the housing had stopped working, but it turns out that the battery
needs to be almost fully charged in order to work inside the
housing. We charged the video camera's battery and then it worked
just fine.
Enjoy filming!

(More customer

inadequate for Sony DSC H3/ H10 camera and does not have space for
holding even the lens protector. The tripod stand is of extremely
poor quality and broke just after one use.
