March is the time of year almost everything holds still for a bit.
After 6 months of basketball the year is finally starting to wrap
up. After the conference tournaments are completed and the
Selection Committee makes their selections for who joins the Big
Dance, many men will take off of work to view the first two games
of the Tournament on the Thursday and Friday. In addition, the
wagering on the Tournament will commence.
Millions of dollars are gambled on March Madness each year, not
only in Las vegas, but in private as well. Nobody knows who will
win, but the tiny numbers on the ends of each team can give you a
minimal idea. For example, a number 16 seed has never beaten a
number 1 seed. So that is a lock. The odds of a number two seed
beating a number fifteen seed are extremely low as well. After you
get these selections out of the way the tournament is wide open.
Many workplace tournaments are won by a lady who knows practically
nothing about basketball but liked the colors of the team, or maybe
purchased a turtle when she was younger so she picked Maryland to
win it all.
An significant fact from all this cash bet on the tournament is
that the players do not receive a penny. These student-athletes
work incredibly hard for 6 months to get to the Tournament. When
they finally reach their target, they are forbidden to receive any
money from the millions of dollars that are placed on their games.
Fair? Not fair? We will discuss that in the next article.
