Changes in GRE Format by 2011

Changes in GRE Format by 2011

The Graduate Record Exam (GRE) , a test taken by 600,000 students across the world each year, will look significantly different in 2011. The Educational Testing Service , which administers the exam, announced its plans to revamp the GRE. on Dec. 4, calling the changes the “largest revisions” in the test’s history.

ETS spokesman Tom Ewing said changes have been a “long time coming.” ETS first announced changes in 2006, but delayed making them until 2007 to add more Internet-based test centers. In 2007, it canceled the planned changes. The new test will include a new grading scale and an increased emphasis on reasoning and critical thinking skills, while focusing less on analogy and vocabulary sections.

Changes to the computer systems the test is administered through will allow students to skip questions and come back later to complete them before finishing the section. Previously, students could not go back to answer questions they skipped. The most significant change, Ewing said, will be in the types of prompts.

“The questions asked will be more focused and require thoughtful responses rather than strictly memorization,” he said. Ewing said exam changes will benefit future test takers.

After the Exam GRE- Get the Right College

After the Exam - Get the Right College
After giving your GRE (if you're applying for graduate school) or SAT (if applying for an undergrad course) and getting your scores, the next big step is identifying the right college. Now you can easily look up any college in the US thanks to top-colleges.com - a site where you can find the right college/university for you by location (by entering a zip code search), by doing a a program search (e.g. engineering, MBA) or by doing a state search (California, New York etc).

Each school featured on Top-Colleges offers a variety of financial aid programs, accelerated degrees, and flexible scheduling options to suit your needs and lifestyle. You can view dozens of top colleges near you (or near a location of your choice) — with hundreds of degree, diploma and certificate programs.

Best GRE Stuff

Best GRE Stuff Here
I feel guilty as I write this post, as its been a few months since my last one. Bu then, I also take comfort in the fact that I've made most of the good gre preparation material available for you to download on this blog.

However, I am also slightly annoyed at people, who just visit the site, don't even navigate and straight away post a comment listing their requested material and ask me to email it to them. Dont get me wrong, I get loads of compliments as well from you kind souls, but hey..why do people have to ask me to email them gre books and software for which I have already provided the download link(s) on this site!

You just need to look in the sidebar towards the right. Check out the section titled "popular posts" and the "blog archive" which is more comprehensive. You wont be disappointed, trust me. Even the gre big book is available here (though it does not have the quants section!)

- GRE Maths Skills - a really nice guideline for the GRE Quants section

- GRE Antonyms and Analogies practice - an ebook that compiles the best practice questions on analogies and antonyms.

Wishing all the best for your GRE if you're preparing to give it these days... Get a wonderful gre score and make me proud!

Your GRE Score

Your GRE Score,What's a Good GRE Score?Cancelling Your GRE Score

Your GRE Score

Each of the three sections on the GRE is scored separately. You will receive a "scaled score" within a range of 200-800 for the verbal and quantitative sections. You will receive a score on a scale of 0 to 6 for the writing section.
In addition to scaled scores, you'll receive a percentile rank. This calculation places your performance relative to those of a large sample population of other GRE takers. From the percentile rank, graduate schools are able to determine what your scaled scores are worth.

What's a Good GRE Score?

Some schools, like large state universities, have cut-off scores below which they do not consider applicants. Find out what GRE scores impress your target schools. The score you "need" also depends on the area in which you're hoping to study. For example, a 600 Quantitative score might be fine if you're planning to study history. However, it might not be distinctive if your field is engineering.

Cancelling Your GRE Score

At the end of the exam, you will be asked if you want to see and keep your score or not. If "yes," you are given your score and it is entered into your ETS record. If you answer "no," you are not given your score and no score is entered. Requested score reports are sent to schools within 10-15 days after the exam. All non-cancelled GRE testing administrations will be listed (and usable) in your ETS record for 5 years.

GRE Exam

GRE Exam

GRE Exam Review

The GRE is the test that’s been taken by millions and millions of college graduates hoping to go on to graduate school over the past several decades. The name stands for Graduate Record Examination, but most people simply call it the GRE for short. The test is given at Thompson Prometric testing centers all over America, and also may be taken at many colleges and universities. As of late 2006, the cost to take the GRE general test is dollarsignr130. (There are also GRE Subject tests in various subjects, but the information here is about the general GRE exam.) The test is a three-part exam, consisting of a writing part, a quantitative reasoning test, and a verbal reasoning portion. The writing portion is scored from 0 to 6, while the other two parts of the test are each scored on a scale between 200 and 800. The average scores for all people who take the GRE are 470 on the verbal reasoning test, and 570 on the quantitative reasoning test.

The test is taken on a computer, and not with the traditional pencil and paper. It’s also computer adaptive, which means that different people will see different questions, based on their responses to the first few questions, and then subsequent questions. A person who gets questions right will see harder questions, while a person who flunks some questions will get easier ones, in order to determine their level of knowledge. It’s important to focus hard and do well on early questions, as this can lead to a much higher score than answering later questions correctly. And keep in mind that the GRE test is a timed test-on the writing portion, you’ll have 45 minutes to write your first essay analyzing an issue, and 30 minutes to write your second one, in which you analyze an argument. On the quantitative portion of the GRE, you’ll have 45 minutes to answer 28 questions on quantitative comparisons and problem solving. You’ll have 30 minutes to answer 30 questions on the verbal test, which cover language and grammar, reading comprehension, sentence formation, etc. Don’t take the GRE for granted-it’s a difficult and challenging test which can have a huge impact, either positive or negative, on your future goals and career. A good study guide and prep materials are mandatory for any person contemplating taking the GRE in the near future.

Structure of the GRE: Overview

Structure of the GRE Overview :
There are three sections in the Graduate Record Examination: Analytical Writing, Verbal Ability, and Quantitative Ability. On exam day, you will take the Analytical Writing section first. For many students, this is a welcome arrangement, since the Analytical Writing section is the most feared part of the exam.

Analytical Writing section is composed of two essays, one of which takes 45 minutes and one of which takes 30 minutes. First, you will have 45 minutes in which to Present Your Perspective on an Issue. In this essay, you will select a prompt and then assert and defend your opinion on the subject. In order to score well on this exam, you will need to provide good reasoning and examples to support your opinion. Next, you will have 30 minutes in which to Analyze an Argument. In this essay, you will be given a brief written argument, which you will have to critique. In order to compose a successful critique, you will need to identify weak areas of the argument and possible counter-examples that could affect the strength of the argument. After the Analytical Writing section of the exam, you will be given a 10-minute break. After this, there will be the 30-minute Verbal Ability section. The Verbal Ability section is composed of 30 multiple-choice questions of the following types: antonyms, analogies, sentence completions, and reading comprehension questions. After another break, you will be given 45 minutes to complete 28 multiple-choice questions in the Quantitative Ability section. Half of the questions in this section are quantitative comparisons and half are data interpretation and problem-solving questions. In addition, there will be either another Quantitative Ability or another Verbal Ability section. This extra part of the exam will feature some questions that may be used in future versions of the GRE. While your score on this section of the exam will not count towards your final score, it will be impossible for you to distinguish which is the scored section and which is the un-scored section.

U.S Universities and Average

Information of U.S Graduate Schools and their min or avg scores:-

If you get a high GRE score ….don’t be too euphoric about applying to only top ranked universities (MIT generally doesn’t really bother about your GRE score). I have seen some people who have 1500 GRE score with no I-20 in their hand. Top ranked universities are generally reserved for IIT’s and other highly reputed undergraduate schools in India. They generally prefer PhD admission rather than MS admissions.
Select 6 universities; 2 risk; 2 medium ranged and 2 low profile universities with good funding reputation.
I am here with presenting you some valuable information about US Engineering Schools.I strongly feel that the following information will be immensely helpful for those who are aspiring for MS/PhD programs in reputed US Universities.
