We love to go to concerts with the symphony. The stand up bass
players are always so amazing, it's just such an elegant and
intriguing instrument It always blows my mind the beautiful sound
that comes from it. The last time we saw someone playing it at a
show it got me wondering how similar it would be to learn to play
stand up bass versus taking conventional bass guitar lessons? I
currently play the guitar so had an idea that learning the stand up
bass would be quite a bit different then playing electric bass.
Since the acoustic stand up bass has no frets there is alot of
memorization and feel that must go into learning and playing to
remember where your fingers must go to hit the correct note. The
skill to do that is far greater then using frets on the electric
bass neck to tell you where you're at. Some people do play an
electric bass without frets of course most of them start using a
fretted bass guitar. Also considering the stand up bass has a
different neck then a bass guitar makes it far more different as
well in terms of touch and feel. Much of it comes down to what
instrument you learn first. if you learned a bass with frets or a
guitar even then switching to an instrument without frets would be
difficult later on. Likely you'd have an easier time learning on
something without frets from the get go. I presume that it's much
more difficult to learn stand up bass as well just based on the
number of bass guitar dvd lessons how ever there is not such thing
for acoustic stand up bass. You can learn electric bass quite easily
with some time and discipline on your part using a course like
Teach Me Bass Guitar. You just need to put in the effort and the
time. Versus stand up bass you'd really need to start at a music
conservatory and one-on-one lessons from a professional.
