Mesmeric Pass
Julian Jaynes Review A little extemporaneous review of
Julian Jaynes’ “The Origin of Consciousness and the Breakdown of
the Bicameral Mind”. The idea is that ancient people were crazy,
and all of those mythologies about the gods weren’t merely
metaphors, but actual images they saw in waking dreams,
hallucinations. Also metaphorical sure, simply because dreams are
metaphorical.

Either look at or recall a time when you looked at a statue,
preferably in real life. If you look at the face of a statue, and
stare at the face for a few seconds, you may start to “anticipate”
it making some motion. Not that you consciously believe it will,

When talking to someone, you are hearing a voice that clearly comes
from outside. If you wish, you can hum a tune, filter their jabber
out in the same way you filter out any annoying sound. But a voice
in the head apparently is not something like this. As stated

I have a real problem with lucid dreams. Whenever I realize that
I’m dreaming, I also know that whatever I think of happens. And so
I say to myself, “don’t think of some monster attacking me”, and of
course then immediately the formless dark monster pops out of
nowhere and attacks and I wake up.

what seemed to be 10 seconds later wake up at 3am to go to some
wrestling tournament. Time seemed to pass in an instant, and this
is because I wasn’t “conscious”. When one undergoes surgery, often

belief that it is some static thing. And this isn’t true, memories
are always changing and updating every time you recall them. This
is why discussions about past trespasses can get impossible, as

Dreams are great evidence that the brain and “the mind” are
material and not some magik-matter. We can see how “thoughts” come
“to mind” that we clearly did not decide to have. In waking life,
information is sent to “the mind”, and the rest of the brain and
filtered through other parts of the brain,
