Gutters Add Value To Your Home

FinestFasciasrecentjobBesides the convenience of not being dripped on, gutters and downspouts provide a useful and important function for the maintenance of your home. By channeling rain water to a central downspout and thereby away from your foundation, gutters help to prevent a slow but steady accumulation of moisture around the perimeter of your house. Over time, this can lead to foundation problems, leaks, or wood rot. If you were on the fence about installing gutters, remember that they provide added value to your home in more ways that one.

If you are installing gutters for the first time or performing gutter repairs, there are a few things to be aware of before you begin shopping. Gutters come in several varieties and materials. Each has its advantages and disadvantages. Maintaining gutters is one issue, then there are cost and aesthetic appeal to consider. Let us address each material in turn.

Steel gutters are the strongest available and will basically last forever. They will cost extra up front, but may provide the best value over time. Be aware that coating steel gutters is a good idea in order to prevent rust. Most installers are happy to talk over the options with you. Quality steel gutters will cost between £8-£10 per linear foot professionally installed.

Copper gutters are only slightly less strong, though they can be expensive to install (anywhere from £10-£25 per foot). Many people choose copper for its visual appeal, as it can add a nice gold or patina piping to your home design. These should also be coated to insure long life.

Aluminum is a cheap install option and will work perfectly fine for several years. Eventually however, these are bound to show wear and tear from falling limbs, heavy snowstorms, or a host of other factors, and will need to be repaired or replaced.

The last types of gutter commonly installed are vinyl gutters. These are the cheapest to install, come in a variety of colors, and last because of their flexibility. The drawback is that they are not very strong and may suffer from extreme heat or cold. Like aluminum gutters, they will work great until one day when they do not anymore. Then they will need to be replaced.

If your house has no gutters or if the existing ones are showing signs of leakage or are pulling away from the house in places, do not let the problem get worse. Whichever gutter you choose to install will add value to your home and prevent future maintenance issues.

UPVC Fascias & Soffits

FinestFasciasrecentjobFascia is a term which generally describes any horizontal surface which spans across the top of columns or across the top of a wall. Traditional fascia has always been installed using wood but because of environmental costs and awareness recently people are opting for UPVC which is much cheaper than wood. Other reasons for using UPVC fascia is there is much less maintenance involved where wood has had to be painted yearly depending on location the maintenance costs when compared to UPVC are staggering.

UPVC can be cleaned once a year to maintain its look and doesn’t have to be touched once installed as it is very weather proof. UPVC is also available in a wide variety of color’s which are unavailable in wood so you can opt for white or red and with modern technology there are foiled boards available which replicate the look of authentic wood whether this be light oak or mahogany. Although metal and aluminum fascia is now available UPVC trumps them in terms of looks and costs so when choosing fascia always make sure the profile used to manufacture is made of virgin not recycled plastic to get a fresher colorful look.

FinestFasciasrecentjobThere are still many people that opt for repair of wooden fascia but the costs of replacing existing fascia rather than repairing it are almost exactly the same when labor and materials are taken into consideration depending on the size of your property. Vents are essential when installing new fascia and make sure that when installed they are put all around the soffits of the house to allow for air circulation this is a very important factor of new fascia and should not be discounted or ignored at any cost. The vents allow the house to “breathe”. Move air in and around the underside of the roof. Keeps house warmer in winter and cooler in summer.

Replacement Guttering In Southampton

The question as to when you should replace your gutters may seem obvious, but actually you should inspect your gutters for signs that are not so obvious. Here are some clues that you may have gutter problems.

Mold or peeling paint on your home’s exterior may be a sign that your gutters are leaking and may need replacing or fixing.

Discoloring of the siding of your home can be from backsplash. Wind (blowback) can force water from overflowing gutters onto your exterior siding. That discoloration of your siding is an indicator that you may have a gutter problem.

In the winter, look to see if snow and ice are building up within the gutter and on the roof. These can cause leaks that damage your home. Water can seep behind the gutters in some circumstances and cause water to leak into your walls causing mold and rot.

Weight from clogs and debris can cause a gutter to pull away from a house or sag and this can also cause water to leak behind the gutter which wreaks havoc. If your gutters are not hanging properly they may not channel water into the downspouts in an efficient manner.

Another indicator that your gutters are not doing their job is if your basement is damp or there are cracks in the foundation. Gutters can clog and force the water to overflow over the sides thus causing water to accumulate around your foundation.

These are the kinds of problems that an experienced gutter company can spot for you. Don’t wait until you have a problem. Be diligent. It is to your advantage to inspect your gutters several times a year. You don’t necessarily have to climb on the roof to do this.

Walk around your property and look for indications that water is causing erosion in unexpected places. Walk around your property and look for indications that water is causing erosion in unexpected places. Little sections of rocky material where you originally had smooth topsoil are one sign. A small area of uneven topsoil, spaces where the water on what was a smooth surface now pools is another.

Give your gutters a regular visual inspection from the ground. In particular, make it a point to walk around during a rain storm. Watch your gutter system in action. Inspect each downspout during the rain. Where does the water flow once it exits the downspout?

Do this walk around in different seasons. If you live in an area with deciduous trees that drop their leaves in fall as we do here in New England, make it a point to look for overflows or blockages caused by buildup of the leaf material, especially if you do not have gutter protection as part of your gutter system.

Do the same thing in winter, particularly after a snowstorm in freezing weather.
Often times you will notice the snow melting unevenly not only because of the direction the roof faces, the North side getting less sun, for instance, but also if you have issues with roofing insulation, different parts of the roof will melt the snow at different rates.

This frequently leads to ice dams as the water runoff refreezes. The water, now turned back into ice will often block your gutters, allowing the ice to back up onto your roof. This can damage your roofing shingles causing leaks through the roof itself as well as subject your gutters to excess weight which may even cause the gutter to separate from the house structure further compounding the problem.

The additional danger of this situation is that if the problem is not so serious that it shows up as damage you can see immediately, it can continue over a period of time and get to the point that a minor issue with your gutters has now become a health hazard and a major expense.

This is a real shame because it is preventable by simply exercising the cautions I have shared with you. Do not assume everything is fine because water is not pouring out of your ceiling and running down your light fixtures. That is fine for the movies, incredibly stupid in real life. It will save you money if you are proactive and look for some of the simple problem indicators that you have just read about.

Replacement Of Fascias and Guttering

Cladding, fascia boards, soffit boards and guttering are the finishing touches to a property and can really make a difference to how it is perceived. If you have just bought a dilapidated building in need of renovation, or are just looking to update the outside of your own home, then investing in quality exterior and roofline products will completely transform it and get it noticed. If your intention is to sell the property, then first impressions are crucial and any potential buyer is sure to be impressed if you have obviously invested in well-made and durable products.

Many properties will still retain their traditional timber roofline products from years ago, however they don’t last for ever and timber eventually rots, as well as looking untidy and unkempt, old timber can also cause you problems as it becomes incapable of doing its job effectively.

Fascia boards and soffits protect the roof space and rafters by provide a barrier from the weather between the roof edge and the exterior walls, and tidy up the roof edge by creating a neat, straight-edged roofline. They enable rainwater to flow down from the roof effectively so it doesn’t run down the outside walls causing stains and damp, or accumulate in places where it shouldn’t.

Purchase fascia board at various lengths and thicknesses, and as they can be fixed directly onto the roof rafters they reduce the overall cost of replacing fascias and fitting vented soffits. There are 3 main types of fascias to choose from, square edge maxi boards at 16mm thick that can produce a neat, contemporary look to any roofline, Ogee maxi boards, also at 16mm these ornamental sculpted boards have a more traditional look. Slightly thicker at 18mm are the sturdy Bullnose maxi boards with a flat, curved edge for a truly individual touch.

General purpose, hollow and vented soffits have their own individual advantages. Hollow soffits are an economical choice, this tongue-and-groove option is quick to install due to its lightweight but is tough and can be matched with your fascia boards. Vented soffits are another first-rate, smart choice offering continual ventilation to safeguard your roof space against damp and mould. The ventilation slots allow a continuous flow of air to travel through the roof space preventing mould and condensation.

Find a soffit board at 9mm thick and available in a variety of sizes, they can be purchased in a plain style or with the tongue and groove effect. Wider boards have longer vents to ensure the amount of air flow through the attic is sufficient.

UPVC is one of the best products you can choose for your roof and home products as the tough material is extremely durable and will last for many years. Fascias are open to the elements and so prone to water damage, this is why it makes sense to select plastic products for the exterior of a property. If you want to go the whole way then choose matching doors and windows too for a complete look, once they are fitted they need practically no maintenance.

upvc fascia boards and soffits can be matched up with guttering and drainpipes to give a complete and smart look to your home. UPVC products are fitted ready to go, they don’t need to be painted, primed or varnished and won’t rot, decay, discolour or crack. Opt for traditional white for a really smart look, or if you prefer something different then you’ll find a wide range of colours and woodgrain finishes on the market. You don’t have to worry about the environment either as calcium organic PVC-U compound is lead-free.

The Way To Clean Gutters

The gutters on your home are starting to overflow so it’s time to clean the gutters on your home. Many homeowners do this project each year to properly maintain their homes. What you may not realize is that most gutter systems should be cleaned 3-4 times a year with each season. You may be wondering why should I clean out my gutters so often? The reason is each season trees go through various cycles that can clog up your gutters.

In spring, most trees drop seedlings and dead twigs. Spring is also the best time to inspect your gutters for any damages that may have occurred during the winter snow.

In summer, trees lose leaves from heavy storms and high winds. In early fall, you should remove leaves that have fallen early to keep your gutters flowing freely. At the end of fall or early winter, you want to make sure everything has been properly cleared from the gutter system to help prevent ice dams or buildup of ice in your gutters. The extra weight of frozen water in your gutters can easily cause them to pull away from the fascia and in many cases, fall off the house. Improper gutter maintenance will lead to clogged or damaged gutters and can cause thousands of dollars in damage to your homes foundation, exterior trim and basements.

To clean your gutters properly, rent a sturdy ladder and get your a neighbor to give you a hand. Ladders can be rented from most local rental centers for as little as £40.00 a day. When using ladders, make sure you stay away from power lines, trees and windows. It’s a good idea to use a ladder stabilizer to make sure the ladder doesn’t crush your gutters or slip while your doing the cleaning. Ladder stabilizers can be purchased at most hardware stores for about £30.00. Remember your safety is more important than clean gutters, so make sure you get someone to help you. Thousands of people die each year from falls and electrocution while working on ladders.

If you have gutter screens or gutter guards, make sure that they aren’t damaged or clogged with leaves and branches. They won’t help protect the gutters if the water can’t get into them properly and the water may just flow over them making them useless, even if the gutters are clean! Carefully lift the guards to avoid damaging them and remove any leaves or debris under them and then reinstall them properly. You should run water over them to make sure they are working properly. Check your downspouts to see if they have screens at the top and clear them as well. If necessary, use a hose to clear any heavily clogged downspouts and make sure you replace any damaged gutter or downspout screens. While cleaning your gutters, inspect them to make sure the fasteners are properly secured. This can usually be done with a hammer, or in some cases a screwdriver.

You may find that over time, the spikes that hold the aluminum to the fascia board have loosened. Either drive the loose spikes back into place, or replace them with longer ones for improved support. When gutters are loose, the pitch is changed and the water will overflow at low areas. Since you have help from your neighbor, this is also the perfect time to inspect your roof for missing shingles, cracked vent pipe gaskets or bare nails. Make sure you return the favor and help him or her on their house when you’re done.
