The Man Behind the Flight;: A Ground Course for Aviation Mechanics and Airmen (1st Edition) Review

TheManBehindtheFlight;:AGroundCourseforAviationMechanicsandAirmen(1stEdition)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a fascinating effort from Jordanoff, which demonstrates the many hats he wore in the field of aviation: pilot, engineer, inventor, teacher, and all-purpose ambassador for flight. Though styled as a "ground course for aviation mechanics and airmen," it was designed to have a larger appeal with its many illustrations and the 30 page illustrated "Brief History of Man's Conquest of the Skies."
From the back cover: "...his writings have made his name a synomym for clarity, accuracy, and unchallenged authority. He is the author of books which are, beyond question, the most informative and the most popular volumes obtainable on flying." "...Jordanoff invented the distinctive method of illustrating complex and seemingly incomprehensible subjects with pictures that convey precision, simplicity, and humorous enlightenment."
Nonetheless, there's a lot of technical information here.
Table of Contents
I Introducing Mechanical Drawing
II Elementary Electricity
III Intorductory Hydraulics
IV Introduction to Physics
V The Men Behind the Man Behind the Flight
Cloth over boards with something like over 300 line drawings, over 20 pages of photoplates.

I recently took a trip to Wright Brothers' National Park with my niece and this book was a great addition to our trip. The puzzles gave her something to do on the road besides counting signs. With every page turned, her interest level increased as we got closer to the park. When we got there, she used the scavenger hunt to direct her trip and she actually read the signs that most kids went darting past. This book turned out to be her guide to this important time in history. This book is great for kids (and their families) as they will be turned on to history in a brand new light. Definitely recommended!

Flight of the Dancing Bird: One Woman's True Story of Slavery and Survival Review

FlightoftheDancingBird:OneWoman'sTrueStoryofSlaveryandSurvival
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Tanjas Darke's book is quite simply a testimony to the strength and resilience of the human spirit. This is a woman who for 20 years was degraded and sexually abused by the very person who by rights should have protected her from such horrors. Her own father.
I have read many books about abused children, but this book is the definitive of all those books, written by a survivor, it's never sentimental, it's often brutally honest to the point of it being horrific but most of all it packs an emotional punch that could polax Mike Tyson in one blow.
I actually came across this book by accident. Late one the evening I was watching a program on SKY and there was a documentary about Tanjas life. I sat mesmerised through the whole program and when it was over I went onto the Internet to find out more about her.
It was then I found out she had written a book about her life, "Flight of the Dancing Bird." Sadly it is not available in the UK and I ended up buying it second hand from the USA as it is out of print even here.
This is a book that should NEVER be out of print. It is a book that every High School Library should have on its shelves, it also is a book that every mental hospital in the world should make its Psychiatric staff read.
It is a book about an ordinary girl who suffered the most appalling of abuse and had the courage to carry on living. It is also a book about a survivor who fell in love with a good man and is now in a loving relationship.
I read it the moment it arrived, from cover to cover and it was one of the most painful experiences in my life. However I don't regret reading it for one minute because Tanjas Darke is a heroine to me. Because of her I am now able to look in the mirror each day and not be ashamed of myself anymore.
Thank you Tanjas, you've helped another bird to finally find her wings...

The true story of Tanjas Darke who suffered terrifying and degrading experiences at the hands of her father for more than twenty years. Her early life was spent in Vanuatu, where her mother made the fateful decision to abandon her to be raised by her father. From the age of nine he manipulated, abused and controlled her: she became his sex slave. Unable to believe in a life of freedom, it took an incestuous pregnancy to give her the courage to break away. Following a near-death experience, Tanjas reported her father's years of abuse, and was the principal witness against him in a celebrated court trial in 2000. He is now serving a prison sentence for his crimes. This is her own account of her life and how she overcame her appalling experiences to create a new life.

Ascend or Die: Richard Crosbie, Pioneer of Balloon Flight Review

AscendorDie:RichardCrosbie,PioneerofBalloonFlight

Very often, histories of individuals tend to jump around in time. Author McMahon maintains an excellent chronological discipline in revealing the life and adventures of Balloonist Crosbie. It is a special surprise to learn McMahon has been able to trace Crosbie to the Western Hemisphere for a view of Crosbie's post aeronaut, post Dublin days. As an airplane pilot, I would have found it interesting to know a bit more about flight conditions, airspeeds, altitudes and temperature changes, but in fairness to the author a.) non-pilot readers might find the data burdensome and b.) the data have no doubt been lost. A fast moving and revealing read about aviation pioneers, and an Irish pioneer in particular, a century and a half before the Wright brothers.

I was mesmerized by each gripping page of CFRs, deffinitions, specifications and leagal poetry. I especially identified with the main hero, "Administration." Page after page I joyfully sobbed at 100 hour inspection criteria, identification number specs and general flight rules. Just thinking about 800 pages of Federal Regulations makes my heart race! It also makes great bathroom reading!

The best and most informative single source I've found about ATC, even though it makes no mention of the Pacific, Alaska or CONUS routes. An account of war correspondent/photographer Dmitri's travels with it from New York across the South Atlantic, Africa, Mid East and India to Chabua; and the return via North Africa, Prestwick and the North Atlantic, this latter including his account of an earlier tour to Goose Bay and Greenland. Photos in abundance, many in color, including several interior shots in C 87s. In the North Africa section, there is also a lengthy chapter on IX Air Force B 24 ops, again lavishly photographed. Well worth the price; and a must-have for those of us interested in the Air Transport Command

Flight Surgeon: Diary of Medical Detachment, 1943-1944 Review

I have read a great many books on WW2 and only a select few have really fascinated me. This book numbers among those few. Upon first glance through the pages, it seems like simply a doctor's medical journal. But it grows on you as you learn about great stories one would be hard pressed to find anywhere else. The narrative grows from robotic to a very warm and colloquial tone which really gives a sense of personality that many WW2 books lack. The fact of how important the events described are seem to be an after thought to the microcosm that this book describes which is typically only available to a select few. I opted to give it 4 stars instead of 5 because it takes a bit of reading to really get into it. But once you do, you'll be hard pressed to put it down.

The Archer's Flight Review

TheArcher'sFlight
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Mark Keavney has written a very rich and engaging story that is a pleasure to be immersed in. The world that has been crafted overflows with it's own brand of unique and elegant history that is at times reminiscent of classical greek myth.
This story blends the mundane with the fantastic - our heroine is the only human, and yet she interacts with centaurs, minotaurs and satyrs who exhibit traits not unlike that of someone you may know, all without taking away from their majesty or awe. This, among other things, helps to accomplish a feat that is rarely done well in the fantasy genre; making the human seem alien.
The only downside is the length. I knew it was a short story to begin with, but the pace throughout most of the book seemed more appropriate for a story of greater length, and I was left with the impression of the story not being finished - but I can be very particular about that, and by no means infer that others would agree.
Normally, this one shortcoming would have been enough to drop the rating down to 3 stars, but I enjoyed reading it immensely. Like it's been stated here elsewhere, the style of writing, the richness of history and the quality of character return a substance to the genre that has been missing or hard to find. There is a feeling of things older and beyond, times and places that inspire wonder, awe and a child-like enthusiam to see more.
That's why I walk away having given it 4 stars.

Long ago, the Makers nailed the World Serpent to a great disc, creating the Wheel. Ever since, the people of the Wheel have prayed for the Makers to return. Now their prayers are answered. But not in the way they expect... The centaurs of Deica's village didn't know what to make of the strange infant born with two legs and no tail. She grew up an outcast; the only bright spot in her life her extraordinary gift with the bow. But when a Serpent attacks her village, Deica flees, beginning a dangerous journey to the center of the Wheel, a journey that will bring her face to face with who she really is and what it means to be "human."
