expensive, but worth the price) this book is garbage.
The paper is newsprint, so it tears easily, and doesn't hold up
well in the cab of my semi. The layout is on a state-by-state
basis, not continuously by freeway, so you have to change pages
when you change states, not when you change freeways. For
interstate driving, this is very annoying.
As a professional truck driver, I do not buy this book, and I do
not recommend it to anyone else.

Badlands and Black Hills. Although this book had a lot of very
useful information, I hated searching through it. Everything is
divided into its own category: hotels, restaurants, activities,
etc. So when we were in one place for a day or two, we had to
search through different sections to find all of the info for that
one place. Even worse, each section is divided out by Northern
Hills, Central Hills, etc. or by the type of food you're looking
for. There was no central location to find all of the restaurants
in Deadwood, for example. Apart from that, I found most of the info
to be correct and useful. A few of the entry fees were higher in
reality, but my biggest problem was with the book's organization.
It was a great vacation, and I had a hard time coming home...

the book for you. It provides all the detail needed to weigh all
your options for lodging in our National Parks (price, location,
views, room options, restaurants). In some cases it even gives
recommendations for certain rooms because of the view or the size
of the room.
Even if you never thought about staying at a National Park Lodge
get this book. There are some wonderful places to stay and staying
in the park, even if it costs a little more, adds so much to the
total park experience.
I will not be without this book when I travel. I just wish the
authors would write a similar book for State Parks.

an extended vacation in Ireland. I had the use of several
guidebooks, but this publication became the book of choice. I found
the information to be timely and descriptions of the various
B&B's to be accurate, including the personalities of the
various owners. Only one time was I unable to contact a B&B
using the information in the book and subsequent attempts revealed
the telephone number to be disconnected. The guide offers a good
selection of types, locations, and prices and is, in my mind, a
"must have" guide when traveling in Ireland.

(More customer
reviews)The book is titled Travel Smart
Maryland/Delaware with the subtitle of Includes Washington D.C. It
would have been better named Travel Smart Maryland/Washington D. C.
with a subtitle of Barely includes Delaware. Out of some 240 pages,
a mere 30 are concerned with Delaware. I have found more
information on a couple of web sites than were included in this
book. This was a big disappointment to me since I was primarily
interested in Delaware. Almost equal time was given to Washington
and Maryland. (If I was going to Washington, I'd recommend either
the Access or Eyewitness guides over this thing.)
Beside the fact that it didn't really cover the place I wanted
information on, what it did provide, I found rather lacking when
compared to other guide books. On the cover, it states that the
author only lists "the best places to eat, stay and visit." Well,
that turns out to be pretty limiting. I know just from a quick
Expedia search that there are many more accommodation choices in
Wilmington than the author listed. I'd rather have a list, with an
indicator of the price range and the service level and let me
decide what the "best place" is. I have no problem with the author
indicating his/her favorites. The same treatment was given to
restaurant selections. Again, I prefer the list of restaurants, the
type of cuisine, the price range and some indication or the food
quality and let me pick where I want to eat.
The back cover claims that the author lists scenic routes. Well,
he/she does, but only 3 and they are pretty much a start here,
drive to here, end up here. There is absolutely no suggestions as
to neat places to stop, see, eat, stay, etc.
Again the back of the book says it lists itineraries for special
interests. Well, it does, but it's just a list of things like
"Historic homes in Brandywine valley, Historic home in Washington
D.C., etc.", and a total time to accomplish seeing the entire list.
Again, no idea of how long it might take to see each of the
"suggestions", no indication of a town to stay in that's convenient
to the "suggestions", no real effort put in at all.
I don't remember if the author lists opening times, prices of
admission, directions to sites or not. I guess I was getting pretty
disgusted by that point.
And if you like photographs, you won't find many here. Photos are
few, black and white and mostly from the tourist bureau.
The only saving thing about this book is that the maps are
plentiful and adequate.
I'll continue looking for a decent guide to Delaware, and if you're
looking for a guidebook to Delaware, I can assure you, this isn't
it.
My star ratings:
One star - couldn't finish the book
Two stars - read the book, but did a lot of skipping or scanning.
Wouldn't add the book to my permanent collection or search out
other books by the author
Three stars - enjoyable read. Wouldn't add the book to my permanent
collection. Would judge other books by the author individually.
Four stars - Liked the book. Would keep the book or would look for
others by the same author.
Five start - One of my all time favorites. Will get a copy in
hardback to keep and will actively search out others by the same
author.

(More customer
reviews)This book includes all the technical and
financial aspects of hotel design/planning. It is an essential book
to have when designing any hotel as it contains all standard
neccessities for all situations. It shows technical drawings and
some info of many (successful) hotels around today. Including some
financial statistics and images of these hotels, which are mainy
the large hotel chains but also Low budget hotels. This is the most
important info as we can learn the most from successful hotels and
see why they are working.
Cons are that it is quite difficult to follow. Not clearly
explaining what certain statistics are and it is not in a reader
friendly format. The few black/white pictures are not important
really... But this does not affect my rating of the book as it is
not intended for actual learning, rather more 'knowing' essential
technical aspects.
The book isn't what a lot of people see as design, aesthetics and
visuals etc. It has nothing to do with interior decorating or
contemporary design. Just to let you know if you dont
already...
If you are or thinking to be a hotel designer/Architect or are in
the hotel business, then this book is perfect. You need it to have
a hotel that works.

and business, I decided to make a longer visit this year. I was
therefore delighted to discover that this new guide had been
published on the desert communities and eagerly looked forward to
some good in-depth, insider information. My delight was shortlived,
however, on seeing the book, which I found to be a rather arid
compilation and rehash of information put out by the local tourism
offices: all-the-usual-suspects restaurant choices &
skim-the-surface places to stay and sights. The guide is not badly
done, is well organized enough, and could be a useful starting
place for the first-time visitor; but I found it did not offer much
value-added beyond the good quality information I received in the
mail from the visitors center itself.
