With field-level temperatures topping eighty degrees at kickoff and first place in the Eastern Conference on the line, there was a feeling among D.C. United’s players that Saturday’s showdown with New England would be the ultimate litmus test. At the end of a marathon stretch of games, the Black-and-Red would have to fight through oppressive heat on top of a Revolution side that rookie Nick DeLeon called ‘the most physical’ he’s yet faced.

With the constant shuffling of Ben Olsen’s lineup throughout the opening months of 2012, there have been few consistent elements in D.C. United’s starting eleven. Only four players have earned a start in each of the Black-and-Red’s eight victories thus far, as Olsen – blessed with depth and cursed by the injuries that have forced him to use it – has displayed a deft touch in manipulating formations and personnel.
