Your Parents' Opinion of Your Computer Skills Might Be a Little Inflated [Humor]

ClickheretoreadYourParents'OpinionofYourComputerSkillsMightBeaLittleInflated Okay, so it's a pain that every time the littlest thing goes wrong with parents' computer you're their go-to IT guy or gal. But let's be honest: there's something not terrible about being a sci-fi hero—even if the real Neo is a search engine. [TNW via 9gag] More »

Nokia Q2 2011: 'clearly disappointing' results as challenges prove 'greater than expected'

NokiaQ22011:operatingprofitdown44percentsinceQ1,challengesprove'greaterthanexpected' With Nokia still yet to fully dive in to the Windows Phone swimming hole, you had to know it was going to be another ugly quarter's worth of results. And it is. The company just posted its Q2 2011 numbers and there's a definite downward trend. Operating profits declined 44 percent since Q1, 391 million Euro compared to 704, and net sales of mobile devices are down 23 percent over the same period -- 20 percent compared to Q2 last year. CEO Stephen Elop quite naturally tried to spin this thing in the right direction:

The challenges we are facing during our strategic transformation manifested in a greater than expected way in Q2 2011. However, even within the quarter, I believe our actions to mitigate the impact of these challenges have started to have a positive impact on the underlying health of our business. Most importantly, we are making better-than expected progress toward our strategic goals.

But, he can't deny the obvious, calling the results "clearly disappointing." Look...

Netflix app on Android updated to work on 24 models including Galaxy S, Droid 3 (update: tablets too!)

The number of Android devices officially compatible with the Netflix streaming app has more than doubled in v2.3, growing from 9 to 24. Last night the description was updated with a new list of devices but the actual updated APK only started pushing this afternoon, bringing Netflix not only to the Lenovo tablet announced last night but also to the Droid 3, HTC Thunderbolt, Motorola Atrix, several Galaxy S phones including the Epic 4G and Fascinate and more. Fragmentation is clearly still an issue for DRM'd apps like this and Hulu Plus, but at least now there's a growing number of recent superphones supported instead of sitting on the sidelines. We've got the updated list of devices after the break, hit the source link to download the app from the Android Market.

Update: As multiple commenters have noted, sideloading the Netflix APK will still work for devices that haven't yet made the list. We were able to confirm the app works fine on the Galaxy Tab 10.1 and Motorola Xoom, however...

Gargantuan SQL injection infects 3.8 million URLs, installs rogue antivirus

LizaMoonSQLinjectionrogueAV Over the last few days, a mass SQL injection attack has been quickly gathering speed. Just three days ago only 28,000 URLs were affected, but at the time of writing, there could be up to 3.8 million infected URLs.

Websense
has a complete write up the attack, dubbed 'LizaMoon,' but here's the basic gist: it looks like someone is exploiting a vulnerabilty (or vulnerabilities) in hundreds of thousands of websites running on Microsoft SQL Server 2003 and 2005. It's not yet known whether this is a vulnerability in SQL Server, or simply a case of outdated, unmaintained, and easily-exploitable CMSes.

The attack takes the form of an SQL injection, which then inserts a link to a JavaScript file hosted on the attacker's server. This is repeated over and over until every Web page in the SQL database has been infected -- and considering 3.8 million URLs have been infected, you can see that this is a very easy, and automated, attack.

Fortunately, the JavaScript isn't particularly malicious: i...

Mitoza is a fun, freaky Web toy with an artistic look

mitoza While not a game per se, I found Mitoza intriguing enough to spend quite some time with it. You start off with a seed, and are then presented with two choices: you can either click a flower pot, or click a cute little birdie.

If you click the flower pot, a flower pot appears and the seed is planted inside. You're then presented with two further choices -- a water can or a bottle of fertilizer. Each choice you make causes your creation to morph, and presents you with two other choices.

There's no winning or losing, really. Each "game" usually lasts around four or five choices, at which point the plant/animal dies in some creative (but not too gruesome) way. At this point you instantly start over with a new seed.

The graphics are captivating; the whole thing has a cinematic feel to it, with a bit of artificial camera shake added for style.

All in all, it's a fun, peaceful way to spend a few minutes, and it might even make you think a little bit while you're at it.

Mitoza is a fun, ...

Security firm RSA attacked using Excel-Flash one-two sucker punch

RSAattackedusingFlashvulnerability It has emerged that the underlying cause of RSA's SecurID gaffe was the recently-reported zero-day vulnerability found in Adobe's Flash Player.

The exploit, which used specially-crafted Flash embedding in Excel spreadsheets, was first reported on March 15 and has since been fixed. RSA was hacked sometime in the first half of March when an employee was successfully spear phished and opened an infected spreadsheet. As soon as the spreadsheet was opened, an advanced persistent threat (APT) -- a backdoor Trojan -- called Poison Ivy was installed. From there, the attackers basically had free reign of RSA's internal network, which led to the eventual dissemination of data pertaining to RSA's two-factor authenticators.

The attack is reminiscent of the APTs used in the China vs. Google attacks from last year -- and indeed, Uri Rivner, the head of new technologies at RSA is quick to point out that that other big companies are being attacked, too: "The number of enterprises hit by APTs grow...

What Are You Trying To Say YouTube Ad?!?

I keep trying to watch this infamous video of Wendi Murdoch trying to defend her mogul husband Rupert Murdoch from a protestor's pie attack at his testimony in front of British parliament yesterday but I keep getting distracted by this pesky YouTube ad (above). Mind you I know nothing about how YouTube ads are targeted and even less about how exactly tagging these things works so I'm just hoping this specific juxtaposition is some kind of algorithm accident. Because, if otherwise, damn. alt
