Pain In The Lower Leg


Shin splints can be caused when the small muscle at the front of your lower leg becomes inflamed. As a Sports Massage Therapist I come across these evil little beasties on a regular basis - in fact, the moment a client complains of Pain Lower Leg, I feel for the telltale squashy swelling close to their lower shinbone and begin thinking of shin splint treatment.Shin Splint Treatment normally starts out with me asking the client on what training they’ve been doing. I listen to a litany of running for miles on difficult roads in dodgy footgear, trying to run in a 6k race without having done any previous training, and worst of all, not warming-up, cooling down or stretching. I then threaten to beat them to death with a fork if they don’t do as they’re advised, and give them a sports massage on the area. They seldom argue with me regarding advice on shin splints; how to get rid of them as fast as possible is their first thought so that they can get on with their training.Shin splint problems are common and afflict both women and men. Not only fit people either - I see plenty of part-time gym users and people who run for enjoyment who suffer from shin discomfort.When I’m asked for treatment advice, I give the following:-

  • Try running of softer surfaces - consider using a treadmill for part of your training.  
  • Never increase your speed and distance simultaneously - one or the other, and not by more than 9% in one go.
  • Running shoes need checking regulary to ensure they’re in good condition.
  • Always warm up for at least 6 minutes.
  • Rest - Give your shin splints a chance to heal.
  • Pain when running is a bad thing! Stop and get the cause of the pain checked.
  • Seek medical advice.

Prevention is better than cure. Most shin splints are caused by overutilisation, so change your training and don’t neglect strength exercises to make the muscles stronger - it’ll help. Squats, lunges and working on a Step will all help - but no jumping!If you work on your core stability, that will take some of the strain off your legs. Try a Pilates class once a week as part of your training, and you’ll be amazed what a difference it’ll make to your running!
